Losing Prints on Shared Printer

I posted this on a different discussion and was advised to post here. Here is a link to that post: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3834099#3834099
I have searched and searched these discussions to no avail for a fix to my problem. I have found fixes for my Boy Scout troops Windows machine shared print problem, but not for my iMac, so here I go.
I have an iMav DV 400 with an Airport card and an iMac G5 1.9 with Airport Extreme with an Epson Stylus Photo R200 connected to it by USB. All these go through a D-Link DI524 wireless router.
I can print wonderfully with the G5 through USB and the Windows machine through the wireless, but I can't get the G4 to print. The G4 seems to stream the prints to its print spooler, then it disappears from there to wind up in the bit bucket somewhere. Nothing shows in the log of the G5 and the printer never acts like it wants to print.
My son tries to use the G4 for homework, but not being able to print makes it tough.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Hello Todd,
First of all I would have a look at the cups error log (Applications > Utilities > Console > /var/logs/cups/error_log) on the G4. This may give some clues why the job is failing to spool to the G5.
On the G4, can you explain how you are adding the printer. I know that for a number of the Epsons you need to go to More Printers and then select Epson USB before selecting the model. What I don't know is if you still need to do the same for connecting to a shared printer.

Paul

  • Losing Printer Options after Snow Leopard Upgrade?  Any solution?

I've lost the ability to print multiple pages on one page with my Samsung SCX-4500 printer. The only factor that changed is upgrading to Snow Leopard.
I've reinstalled printer drivers but the Page Setup/Layout drop down screen is not available.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Does anyone have ideas as to how to solve it?
I hate wasting paper and the multipage function was a factor in purchasing this printer from Apple.
    Thanks.

This ability shouldn't be tied to the specific printer you are using.
I've reinstalled printer drivers but the Page Setup/Layout drop down screen is not available.
What application are you printing from? Some applications don't have a Page Setup.
The Layout panel is in the menu that contains the current application's name. For instance, if you are printing from Safari and the print dialog is expanded (use the disclosure triangle to the right of the printer's name if it isn't), clicking on "Safari" will show the Layout menu.
    Hope this helps.

  • Losing Printer

I've set up my hp 1525nw at least twice already for use with ePrint. After each set up, created the list of authorized email addresses and tested the ePrint facility and it worked.
Then I don't use the facility for a week or two, come back to my ePrintCenter and find that the printer that had been set up is no longer in my printer list. In fact, there are no printers available. As mentioned, I've done this twice - tested the facility successfully twice - and twice have lost the printer after a few days of not using it.
I'd appreciate any advice / thoughts on this!

I'd say you have a system software problem. Try these one at a time:
    Repair permissions (Disk Utility).
Reset Printing System (new in Tiger) - In Printer Setup, click this menu item found just above Quit Printer Setup.
Repair the hard drive - start up with the install DVD - don't start the installer, instead, find Disk Utility in the top (Finder) menus and use it to repair the hard drive.
If there is a downloadable Combination Updater from Apple, use it to re-Update OS X.
Try Printer Setup Repair from www.fixamac.net.

  • WRV54G Losing printer connections

I have a WRV54G and about every 24 hours it either reboots or something causes it to lose connections to my printers and computers. When it does this it also assigns new IP addresses to each device and of course the printer ports assigned to each printer are no longer a valid address so I need to go into each printer setting and assign a different port coresponding with the new IP address it has been assigned. This is causing a lot of work and headache and there should be a way to get around it but to date I have not found a way and can get no help from support on this issue. Does anyone else have any knowledge of this issue and have you found a way to get around it. My old Linksys did not have this problem nor did my D-Link
    Thanks in advance

Why not assign the printer a permanent ip outside the range of the DHCP, but in the same group?  For example, if the router's ip is 192.168.1.1, the DHCP might be set to assign in the range 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.150.  Assign the printer 192.168.1.151, and the router won't assign that to anything else.

  • Iphone and ipod losing sync with shared itunes library - home sharing not working

I hope this can help some people who have had problems with syncing their IOS devices to their shared itunes library.
Having had a lot of trouble with syncing and sharing my itunes libraries from two PC's to an iphone 4 and 4S via "itunes home sharing", I decided to try and find a solution using typical search engine search phrases. I found a number of issues similar to mine that pointed toward local network protocols such as media serving, and the ability or lack of ability to use these protocols by DSL routers.
My solution was simple, change the DSL router. My ISP supplied DSL router was the problem, not being able to identify that the PC's hosting my itunes libraries become media servers when itunes home sharing is switched on. My DSL box is a Tesco Broadband branded/firmware Thomson TG580. As a test I tried out a box from my previous supplier, an O2 branded/firmware Thomson/Technicolor TG582n. Although this wont work with my ISP connection, it will work as a wirless/wired router. As soon as I connected this all together, it worked first time without any hassle. I was mirroring my shared HD videos via the itunes home shared library to my 4S perfectly.
I know this may not help most people, but if you have the chance to test another wireless router, give it a go. Having had a good look, I can't find an Apple compatibility list. Maybe this is something they could do, or maybe someone can point out a site that may have this info?
I am by no means an Apple Fanboy, but I have to say that a lot of the complaints about the home sharing between itunes, ipods, iphones, Apple TV etc. may simply be the router and not itunes or the IOS devices.
My setup is PC's running the latest itunes with Win 7 32 & 64 bit and my IOS devices on 6, I also tested an iphone 4 on IOS 5 that worked perfectly. My 4S is now a perfect HDMI media player/streamer for my itunes music and videos encoded to H.264 using Handbrake.

Assuimg you have the latest ATV firmware, at the bottom of the general settings menu on your apple TV there is an option to reset your apple TV. Try that and then reset it up back on your network.
Before testing ensure the correct time/date/nearest City is setup in the ATV settings and re-enter your apple ID/password and turn on home sharing. You can connect to your network either via wifi or cable and see if it then works.
Resetting the ATV and then checking and re-entering all my settings worked for me.
I guess if not, then the next step is to disable any firewall on your PC and see if that works after the PC is rebooted.
    Hope this helps.

  • Why does my network stop recognizing my printer and telling me it is offline.

I got a photosmart 6510 printer and it loses wifi connectivity.  in order to get it working again i have to toggle the wifi on and off on the printer.  It only maintains a connection for a short time and i have to toggle the wifi on and off again.  The connectivity seems to only be lost between the printer and laptop (running windows 7)  or the printer and phone (android ginger bread).  I have a ps3 on the same network and connectivity to that device is never interrupted. The ps3 connection  works even when my computer and phone report the printer is offline.  I have enabled full trust to my computer and phone and even established a static IP address for the printer.   The update IP address application can't even find the printer when i input its static IP address.  please someone help.

    Thanks for your help.
I was able to find the address line and I did find the screen that allows a person to change the static IP address.
I decided not to mess with the static IP address.
Instead I moved my G router, which is in the basement to another location.
I went 10 days w/out losing printer connection to the network for 10 days.
I did not use the printer during those 10 days.
Right now, I am leaving the printer off until I used it.
I see no reason to leave the printer on for an extended period, if I'm not printing.
If I lose connection, the next time I try to print, then I will move the printer to the first floor.
Otherwise I will buy an N router.
I've been losing connection from my pc to the G router more often lately,
so maybe the router is failing.

  • Document size and final print size

I am beginning a new aerial drawing in Illustrator CS4 on an 2009 imac, to be printed at 40x40". If the document is sized at 40x40, the computer slows down as detail accumulates. Since Illustrator is a vector-based application, can the document size be set smaller than the final print size, say at 20x20" or 10x10", to keep file size down and speed faster, without losing print quality?
    Thanks for any help!

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    without losing print quality?
Depends on the specific content of the file and what exactly you mean by 'setting the document size smaller.'
Better would be to try to discern what is causing the performance issue. Again, that comes down to what the content is.

  • Lost printer on Macs not PC

Don't really know where to post this, so here goes- I am running wireless on my iMac and on my Macbook Pro, and my Sony VAIO. The base station is Apple Express with Bonjour for the wireless. Also Bonjour for the PC. I lost the ability to connect my printer, Canon IP3000 on only my Macs. I cannot add the Canon IP3000 printer. I can connect directly thru USB port but no wireless on any Mac. I can still print wirelessly with the PC, no problem there. Have reloaded the drivers and corrected permissions. In the printer dialogue box it shows the printer I want to add, but will not add it. It says "adding printer" but spins intermenably. Worked alright up until last nite. Strange losing printer on both Macs at the same time.

  • Home sharing constantly dropping out

I have two apple TVs (2 gen) streaming from a single mac using home sharing over a private wifi network.  I have a problem with the Apple TV constantly losing the home sharing link.  It can be part way through a movie playing and then suddenly the movie stops and the home sharing prompt comes up on the Apple TV.  I restart itunes (the latest version) on the Mac and the Apple TV immediately picks up hte home sharing library again. Sometimes it will play a whole movie, sometimes just  ten minutes, sometimes when the Apple TV wakes up it finds the home sharing link sometimes it doesn't.  I can not seem to find a common cause - I stop the computer sleeping, no difference.  When it drops out the Apple TV still has wifi, I can access Youtube for example - no problems.  This is driving me bananas.  Anyone got any suggestions?

I have owned Apple TV for a year and half and dropping home sharing has been a problem from day one. I have spoken to Apple many times and tried all their suggestions, Macbook Pro, Airport Extreme, Reboot, Reload, Etc..... Nothing has solved the problem. The problem may be as frequent as every 5 minutes or once in 3 hours. Logging out of home sharing and logging back in gets home sharing back running but does not solve the problem.
I am convinced Apple TV is garbage. Everything I own made by Apple "just works" I cannot say the same about Apple TV. It is an expensive paperweight. I cannot recommended anyone to purchase this product and during my year and a half relationship with Apple TV, it is obvious that this problem is widespread and Apple has no resolution to fix it. This piece of junk just sits there collecting dust since it is too frustrating to use it.
I have spent many, many thousands on Apple products and everything works fine, but Apple TV is garbage.

  • Hard drive may be on it's way out - what now?

I have a CoreDuo 1.83GHz white iMac, in the past month or so the hard drive has begun acting up (most recently permissions going haywire, losing printer drivers and unable to add any), Disk Utility has reported problems which it has managed to fix (booting from the install disc) but two problems in about a month does not sound good.
Is there a free tool for checking the hardware health / status of my hard drive? Something that I can run on the iMac as-is, non-destructive. I am pretty low on internal HD space anyway so an upgrade wouldn't go amiss.
I'm led to believe that these iMacs are tricky to get into for maintenance, however I am competent with a screwdriver and computer innards so would like to give it a go. Are there any good tips or pitfalls to avoid when doing this? I saw a guide online for upgrading the CPU to a Core2Duo, I could use this for the part about getting into the machine.
    http://www.maclife.com/article/createupgrade_your_imac_to_a_core_2_duoprocessor
    Thanks for your advice!
PS Just out of interest, if I were to upgrade to a Core2Duo what would be the latest version of the chip that I could fit? In the guide they fit a T5600 but that was written over three years ago.

    {quote:}The thing is that I really like my white iMac, I'm not at all keen on the shiny metal look of the new ones (especially not the gloss screen, that's just wrong and impractical for me){quote}
I know exactly what you mean, that's why I'm still using my 17" iMac with a connected 21.5 LG display.
    {quote:}Hmm. I have freed up some space so I now have 51GB free, however I am a little puzzled as to where all of the remaining space has gone. It is a 160GB hard drive (152GB), my home folder uses about 73GB, that leaves about 80GB! I know OS X only uses about 6~8GB so where is the rest of the free space?{quote}
The Drive could be somewhat fragmented because of iMovie, you might want to clone the Internal HD to an External Hard Drive and then back using the Restore feature in Disk Utility or SuperDuper. All-though I advise using a second dedicated External HD (FireWire 400 is faster than USB for cloning the OS X), so that you have a second untouched backup on your 1T in case something goes wrong. If you decided to swap the Internal HD to say a 320 or 500GB then a second External HD or USB/Firewire enclosure for your OEM 160GB drive will also come in very handy for restoring the OS X to the new drive and later backup or storage.
In short: I never trust or rely on just one drive Internal or External with any of my data and always keep it on no less than two drives....
I will help some folks that want to swap out there Internal HD and some that have already made a mess inside there iMac. But the two biggest problems are: (1) the White Intel iMac's are most difficult to open and work in without damaging other components in the process. (2) internally they tend to run hot and at 4 years old, Display connections, Display cables and pretty much everything else is very brittle and easy to damaged.

  • Photoshop CS5 doesn't recognize scanner

    Hi there,
I bought a new iMac G5 (OS 10.6.4) four days ago only to find Photoshop CS5 was not recognizing the scanner on my two year old Samsung SCX 4500 Printer/Scanner (the printer works fine). I downloaded the most recent Samsung scanner driver (1.0) and Photoshop still doesn't recognize it. Both Preview and Image Capture on the Mac recognize the scanner which enables me to scan and then upload to Photoshop, but that adds a step I'd rather avoid. Unfortunately it seems that a lot of people are losing printer/scanner compatibility when they upgrade.
    Any thoughts on a fix?
    thanks

all the components for the mac can be found here:
    http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/
you want to first download libusb as a binary for 10.6
    http://www.ellert.se/PKGS/libusb-2009-09-10/10.6/libusb.pkg.tar.gz
    and then install it
then download SANE backends as a binary for 10.6
    http://www.ellert.se/PKGS/sane-backends-2010-01-17/10.6/sane-backends.pkg.tar.gz
    then install
then download TWAIN SANE Interface as a binary for 10.6 and install
    http://www.ellert.se/PKGS/TWAIN-SANE-Interface-2.9/10.6/TWAIN-SANE-Interface.pkg .tar.gz
    reboot, open photoshop,
you should now have a "sane.." listed as an option as you would your old scanner.

  • Leopard keeps losing my shared printer

I have a 500 MHz TiBook running 10.4.11 that I have been using a print server and file server. My printer is connected to the TiBook by USB, and shared through the Sharing Preference Panel.
My main work computer is a MacBook Pro. When I had 10.4 installed on my MBP, it remembered the existence of the shared printer. However, since upgrading to Leopard, my MBP keeps forgetting about the shared printer. I frequently have to "Add new printer". This process takes a long time, because it insists on searching for new drivers, etc.
Does anyone know if there is something I can change in my configuration to make Leopard remember that this shared printer exists, and that it is my default printer?
Upgrading the TiBook to Leopard is not an option, because it is a 500 MHz machine.

This was fixed by the OS 10.5.2 update.

  • Personal File Sharing & Printer Prefs reset at startup

I work at a studio that uses all Intel Macs. We have two MacPros as our studio computers and Mac Minis for our client computers. I have turned on Personal File Sharing for the two MacPros everytime I've turned the computers on and they work fine. UNTIL I restart them or shut them down. For some reason, both MacPros at startup are losing their settings for Personal File Sharing AND all my networked Printer Info. So I have to go about resetting them everytime!
Anyone have any insights. If I'm working on let's say Studio B's MacPro and I realized I needed something on Studio A's MacPro, I CAN'T GET IT!!!!!! It's really a poor pickle Apple's got me in and I would appreciate anyone's help in solving this issue. Thanks so much in advance.

THIS PROBLEM WAS SOLVED. Booted up using TechTool Pro's eDisk that I created. Then repaired disk permissions on the Mac OS X hard drive and everything works perfectly now.

  • Epson printer sharing incompatibility between PPC Macs and Intel Macs?

I currently have an Epson Stylus Photo 2200 that is shared on my network so I can print to it anywhere including using Airport. This has worked fine for a long time. Last night I tried to print to it from Photoshop on the MBP and found lots of the options in the printer setup for this specific printer weren't showing up. It was very baffling, so after much trying I finally connected the printer directly to the MBP and the options were back. But other things were very different. Like instead of having different printer selections for bordless printing, there is only one printer selection and now when you select the paper size (8x10 for example) there are submenus on the paper size for borderless or other options.
Certainly better but very different. Looking in the printer directory, the file structure looks different and the version for this printer (which now isn't a driver itself but a plug-in to a main driver) is 3.0 which is much newer than the version in the PPC 10.4.5 or on their website. I don't have other epson printers to check out, but they appear as plug-in files now which they didn't before. This issue may apply to other epson printers, not just the 2200.
So, this is long winded way of saying that yes, the printer works (and works well) but it's not incompatible with the PPC mac version and you can't share the printer without losing functionality. It sure would be nice to be warned about this. I don't see anything from Apple or Epson that would let you know this. Has anyone else seen anything similar to this?

I'm in the same situation --- I have a 2200 hooked up to a PPC desktop Mac, and I share it over Airport with my MBP. I have good and bad news.
Good news: Epson has posted new 2200 printer drives for Intel-based Macs on support.epson.com. Download and try them. Read the instructions --- you'll probably have to do a "Reset Printing System" and restart your MBP before installing the new drivers.
Bad news: while I'm able to print to my 2200 over Airport, I'm unable to access Print Settings to change the media type. Thus, unless I'm printing to plain paper, I still have to use a direct connection from the 2200 to my MBP.
Does anybody have a solution to the Print settings issue?
