Losing quality when bringing photos into timeline?

I am having a major problem with a stop motion project that I am working on. I have imported a folder worth of high quality photos into Final Cut, and when the photos are opened in the Viewer window, the photos appear to be very high quality, as they should. However, when they are put in the timeline, there's a very noticeable loss in quality, and they are also cropped slightly. I have gone through quite a few Sequence Presets, and none of them seem to change the appearance in the slightest. I have invested quite a bit of time in this project so far. Please help!

I have no doubt I will lose quality along the way. I am also confident that I can preserve enough quality that your average viewer will not notice much of a difference in quality if at all. Certainly in motion the photos will not look the same, but even when the stills are frozen on the canvas the quality is poor. What settings will provide the best quality for the final product? I will not be able to use blue ray.
You seem to be thinking the computer or the software must be at fault. Your images are undergoing a reduction in quality that amounts to entire order of magnitude, a factor of 10. You will never put pack what is being lost or be able to create an illusion of fidelity. When you go to the Web, as you indicate later in the thread, your images will be reduced in quality and pixel density by another order of magnitude,70-90% of the already reduced information will be discarded in the form of averaging and reduction of the tonal range to web-safe CLUT.

  • When importing photos into iPhoto I get an error Unreadable Files:

When importing photos into iPhoto I get an error Unreadable Files: The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).
I can open the JPG in question with PREVIEW, photoshop etc.. actually if I try to import a photo that I had originally imported it also fails..
    Please help... Thank you..

I too had this error message (and to be honest, it was becoming a bit of a pain). I resolved it in a slightly different way to Terence.
I had 10 photos that were allegedly unreadable; however, as Terence rightly says, they are duplicates. When I opened iPhoto I mad a note of each of the files concerned and did a Spotlight search throughout my hard drive.
For each photo, there were four or five duplicates. I deleted all but one of each of the photos and then reopened iPhoto. No more error message.
The original problem stemmed from importing my files directly from an external device I was using with a previous computer [that was running XP].
    Anyway, hope this helps.

  • Problems losing quality when going from develop module to library module ??  anyone have a fix

Problems losing quality when going to library module from develop module.  Sharpness and color quality decrease

This is normal. There will be a difference as you are comparing Library Previews with the image in Develop which accesses the original file, although the difference is usually slight. Real results need to be judged from exporting after selecting the output sharpening e.g. for glossy paper, if printing or screen sharpening for web images or emailing.
The idea with sharpening is to apply capture sharpening so that the image in Develop looks just sharp but not over sharp. Lightroom then uses the correct algorithm for output sharpening based upon image size and quality settings etc.

  • Aperture 3: Losing quality when exporting to jpg

I'm downloading raw (nef) images to my hard drive from a Nikon D7000 then importing into Aperture 3. I make changes mostly with Enhance within Aperture 3 and using the Color Efex Pro 4 plug-in. Looks great in Aperture and if I export using any of the tiff options. Quality remains the same. But if I export to jpg (any of the options) or open the tiff in Photoshop Elements and convert to jpg I loose quality. The photo looses sharpness. I have a tif and jpg side by side and the difference is huge. I want to upload to my website so therefore need to use jpg but I'm hating how poor the quality is.
Any suggestions? I see other people are having similar issues.
    Thanks!

How are you viewing the exported JPG?  What is the size of the JPG file?
If you open it in Preview and then go to Tools->Show Inspector you'll get some info on the makeip of the file.
Here is an example of an exporte JPG at quality 12 and original size:

  • When importing photos into LR, the year is incorrect. How to fix?

When I first created my Lightroom catalog, each new folder would fall under 2012, and within that folder would be the date, so for New Year's Eve "2012-12-31". Now that it is 2013, when I import photos into my 2013 folder, Lightroom instantly tries to create a subfolder of 2012 and another subfolder in that with today's date. I can't seem to get Lightroom to stop doing this. See the image below to see what I mean.
I'd like it to just put today's importing images into a subfolder under the 2013 folder, called "2013-01-25". It still wants to create this 2012 folder. Sorry if I am not using the correct wording but this is what is happening so everything shot in 2013 keeps getting put into a new 2012 folder each time.
As you can see I want the subfolders to be organized and Lightroom already has the date format correct. Please help me with this.
    Thank you very much.
I am running Lightroom 4.3 on a 13" Macbook Air with Mac OSX 10.8.2, 1.8 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory, with RAW photos from a Canon EOS 6D.

As far as iOS is concerned naming or labeling your photos is pointless since it's a "visual and tactile" device where you touch or swipe what you see or a folder opens to show you it's entire contents. IPad and iPhone was never intended to search for a picture as such like you would on your desktop or laptop.

  • "Unreadable files" when importing photos into iPhoto

OK, I just recently got a new iMac - my first time using iPhoto. All seemed well for a while... until I started to import my photos into iPhoto from my HD (which I had copied over from my old G3).
The problem was that as I was importing some of the photos I got an error message saying the following:
    "Unreadable files: 7
The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognizable file type or the files may not contain valid data)."
Now I really don't understand why it's saying this, as the 7 files it is referring to are just normal jpegs straight my from digi-cam. They are just like all the hundreds of other photos that were successfully imported.
Any ideas or help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks.

    Abstractman23:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Were the photos you were trying to import located within an old iPhoto library folder/package? When you got the message did iPHoto display the file names of the files it couldn't import? What were they?
If you were trying to import a library folder then the unrecognized files would be the database files that are part of the library structure.
If you are trying to move your old library from the G3 to the new Mac, just copy the iPhoto LIbrary folder/package intact to the Picture folder of the new Mac. Move any other library out beforehand. Download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. Now launch iPhoto and it will open the library and, in an older version, update it to iPhoto 7.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Illustrator file losing quality when opened in photoshop...please help!

Hello, If anyone could help me I would be so grateful, i really am struggling to the point of tears here!!
I have simple line drawings in illustrator (outlines of clothes) that I wish to open in photoshop to add colour and effects to.
When i have tried to copy and paste (as normal paste, smart object, pixels, path and shape layer) the quality is lost.
I have also tried to open or place the file in photoshop as a .psd, .ai , .pfd and still the quality is lost.
I have saved with different resolution settings too, but it always loses quality when it is opened in photoshop.
Is there any way for me to have a clear line drawing like it is in illustrator in photoshop? And how should I go about it?
Thank You so much to anyone who can help, I really am at my wits end with this!

Because the raster on the clipboard would almost never be the right size or resolution. We can't use it.
Come on, Chris, I'm not buttoned up the back.
You told me last month when I complained about the poor quality of "paste as pixels" that Photoshop uses the raster in the clipboard so the raster must be poor and not Photoshop's rasterizing of vectors.
Re: Ps CS6 Problem: Incorrect rendering of pasted Adobe Illustrator vector objects
Now you say that Photoshop does not use the raster in the clipboard and does rasterize the vectors when "paste as pixels" is performed.
You can't have it both ways.
You've just confirmed what I said last month: Photoshop rasterizes the vectors even when pixels are present in the clipboard and "paste as pixels" is requested. Thank you.

  • Problem when bringing flash into dreamweaver

    Hi All,
I am creating a website in dreamweaver using my flash file. I
have a few buttons that link to pdf files in a blank window. The
pdf files open fine while in flash, but as soon as I bring it into
dreamweaver, the pdf's won't open. I have them all in the same
folder as the flash file...so, again, there is no problem in
    flash...only in dreamweaver.
Anyone know what's wrong? Thanks so much!

Could you either explain how you are calling for the pdf
files or submit a link to the fla and html? Its kind of hard to
diagnose without really knowing what you did.

  • Quality Loss When Importing Video into Timeline...Any Ideas??

    Hey all -
I'm fairly new to CS4, so excuse me if this question is a little dumb.
I've offered to edit a friend's actor showreel to familiarize myself with CS4. He gave me a bunch of HD clips: they're .MOV files, and are 1920x1080 and 23.976fps.
I can import a clip and drag it into the preview screen in the middle: it looks fine. However, when I drag it onto the timeline, it suddenly looks faded and blurred. It's not horrible, but it loses the vibrancy of color, the sharpness and the contrast of the original clip. A lot of the quality is gone.
I've tried opening the project with a number of different settings, no difference. I thought it might look OK when I exported it, but it looks just like it does on the timeline monitor: a little washed-out, blurred, just not as nice as the original.....
I'd hate to present it to my pal looking like this, can anyone suggest a solution? I tried everything I could think of already....
    Thanks!!
    B

    Hi Hunt -
many thanks for your reply. I've spent the last couple of days trying to follow your advice and do more research.....still no luck.
Firstly, I upgraded my OS to Windows 7, thought it might help for some reason. Didn't. I downloaded a bunch of codec packs.
    Gspot reports:
    Codec: AVC1
    Name: H.264
    Codec Status: undetermined
So I'm basically running through all the possible output formats, but really it doesn't seem to be an encoding problem: the quality loss happens as soon as I move the file from the preview screen to the timeline.
If you have any othe suggestions I'be very pleased!!
    Thanks
    Bruce

  • FCP shutting down when I bring jpegs into timeline....

    Hi all you night owls.....
I am just about pulling my hair out right now. Have a project due in 8 hours; this project is a weekly project that I have been doing for the past 16 weeks. Same thing different jpegs and hdv footage.
When I drag the jpegs into the timeline (after importing them into thier own bin into the project), FCP just shuts down. I have tried dragging 50 down into the timeline at once, or 5.....there is always one or two jpegs that are red lined, and when I try and render them, it says "general error". But here is the kicker. It doesn't matter which one is at the beginning of the group, the first one always has a red line.
Any help would be appreciated. I have already tried the "guiness method".....minus the guiness. (yeah, I am 4 months pregnant) but man, one sounds good right now!!!! (you know, shut down the computer, go have a guiness or two, and come back to the computer).

  • Image Size when bringing pix into Photoshop from a Camera

I'm using Photoshop CS2 on XP Media Center Edition. I cannot, for the life of me, find out how set the default dpi of images being brought into Photoshop.
At the moment I'm using an Action but that's pretty time intensive when I have to bring in more than a few photos. Sometimes I have 2 or 3 hundred to do.
    Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give me.
    JJ

Images are made of pixels. ppi has nothing to do with the characteristics of an image file. The ppi is only a suggested setting if placed in the metadata of an image file. You can print your image at any size you want regardless of the ppi embedded in the file. Some printers will assume you want to use the embedded ppi setting but again this can be overridden.
So, Printed images have ppi. (image files do not, until they are printed)
So ask yourself, why are you trying to set the default ppi (you say dpi) of the image files? What are you going to use this metadata information for. Normally I just ignore this ppi metadata since it really does not mean anything, other than possibly the physical size you meant to print your image, but again it can be overridden at the time of printing.

  • Problem of loss of quality inserting a photo into muse

I shoot photos in RAW, edit them in Photoshop and then save them both as a psd. file and a jpeg, file. I have a photograph website designed in Muse and published online via Muse/Adobe. When I insert photos (the jpeg versions) via a thumbnail widget attached to a lightbox, the photo quality is seriously degraded. The colors are totally washed out and the tonal quality is terrible. If I have shot a photo originally in jpeg I don't have the same problem. I chatted with someone on the Adobe/Muse technical help who thought the problem was that the original image size was being re-sized/re-sampled when inserted into Muse and thus degrading the image. So on his suggestion I  re-edited a sample photo in Photoshop and re-sized the image to match the size as it is automatically re-sized when inserted into Muse....this was not the solution at all. Does anyone have an idea how to solve this problem?

If you place an image in its original size, Muse don’t touch the image while outputting. That means: If you place an image, which has the same size as it is placed in Muse, the quality is determined by your source image and nothing else.
Colors: Use sRGB as color profile. This is the color spaces used in WWW.
