Losing Resolution on DVD Menu Screen

I have a three 5-minute videos I used to build a DVDSP4 project. For the menu and submenu screens, I used 2 high quality jpeg images, both which were approximately 5-7 megabytes in size. I built the Video_TS folder using DVDSP4, then burned it using Toast Titanium (not sure the version - whichever was released last year). When I view the menu screens on my new iMac, my older television, or on a high definition, the image is pixelated. When I play the videos themselves, their image quality is back to normal. I wonder if the jpeg images are too large for DVDSP to handle? Any other feedback would be appreciated.

DVDs are SD resolution only. So there is no point in working at high resolutions. Photoshop has Presets for the different SD resolutions (PAL, NTSC, 4:3, 16:9, etc.) use one of these to start off with.
DVD SP does a bad job of scaling down graphics. So if you do have high res graphics DVD SP must scale it down to SD res, and its going to do a terrible job of it, so you are best off starting off in SD resolution in Photoshop.
JPEG is a compressed format. You are better off saving in an uncompressed format like TIFF or PNG.

    a. What material did You use ?
    • video codec (.mov, .mp4, .avi - is no codecs but containers - What's in  them?)
    • audio file format
    • photo file format
    b. What video editor did You use
    • iMovie HD6
    • iMovie'08 or 09 or 11
    • FinalCut (Express/Pro/Pro-X)
    c. 120 minutes - Are You using a DL-DVD ?
Duration is Movie time PLUS MENU. Menu can take 15 minutes or even more.
    iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1)
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    About double on DL DVDs.
    d. Frame rate: Don't know - PAL or NTSC or 24fps
Open in QuickTime Player and open Inspector and read (codec and frame rate)
    e. Burn speed: Default
Set it down to x4 - Better over all result.

  • Image resolution in DVD menu

I created an image, with text, for a background image on the DVD menu. The image quality was 300 dpi. When the disc was finished burning, I put it back in my macbook to test it out. The text in the background image was very blurry... Maybe should have used a better resolution than 300 dpi? Does anyone know what I should do?

    Hi
The problem You see - has nothing to do with whether You use 200ppi or 100ppi photos
BUT the advices are very GOOD !
BUT - THIS is due to DVD-Standard - There are no High Definition DVD Quality
just standard and as Old CRT-TVs
Your Mac screen are much more supperior ! Say about 10 times or more.
So put Your DVD into a Stand-alone DVD-player and watch it on a standard TV
    and You see the quality.
If You need more then either
    • Take the Blu-Ray road (program,burner,BD-disks and Player)
    • Or connect Your Mac to a big flat screen TV or HD-Projector and enjoy
the full quality of Your work
    • In some cases - Copy back to Camera and use this to Playback - also is a way that works
*AND - The most important info !*
iMovie'08 & 09 - are not designed to do DVDs from. They both discards every second line in the picture
due to their way of handling interlaced video.
Resulting in a quality less than VHS-VCR tape material
*iMovie up to version HD6 and FinalCut any version - Handles this without any loss of quality*

  • Image Stretched in DVD Menu

    Hey!
I'm having some issues with an image I made for the DVD menu. I created an image in Illustrator (720 x 480), saved it as a JPEG maximum quality and imported it into DVD Studio Pro. The DVD is in SD and is dimensions are (720 x 480). However, when I import the jpeg, the image is vertically stretched.
Does anyone know why this is happening? The dimensions I created the image in is the same as the dimensions of the DVD. Why would my image be stretched?
    Thanks for the help!

    Thanks Drew!
That Tiff suggestion brought me one step closer. The photo isn't stretched or squished anymore!
However, I'm still experiencing some issues.
So the DVD menu's display mode is set for 4:3 and the resolution is 720 x 480
The actual m2v video track's aspect ratio is also 4:3 and the resolution is 720 x 480
Once I import the Tiff file, the file's properties that show up in the window say
    Format: Quicktime Picture
    Width: 720
    Height: 480
    Layers: 0
I'm not sure what Quicktime Picture means but I'm sure it's irrelevant. What I'm getting to is, the size of the tiff is 720 x 480. However, when I put it into the dvd menu, the image is not squished or stretched but it doesn't fill up the whole screen. There's about (estimating) roughly 25 pixels of whitespace above and 25 px below the image. The image is centred on the DVD menu, but it doesnt fill up the whole screen.
When I simulate the DVD and hit the play button, once the video plays, it fills up the whole screen.
I don't understand why the Tiff doesn't fill up the whole DVD menu screen even though it is 720x480 and the DVD menu's properties are 4:3 and 720x480.
Do you have any other suggestions of what I can do?
    Thanks a lot!

  • DVD menu becomes blurry when viewed on a computer screen, help!?

When I create a DVD menu in "DVD PRO" it looks great until the DVD is burned and I try to play it on my Mac, then I notice while it is at full monitor screen size the background image becomes very blurry, when I put it at 100% the screen is very tiny, is there a way to make the screen larger or make the background image more clear when it is blown to that screen size? Any info you guys can give would be greatly appreciated.

I'm reading your post again . . . more carefully (sorry!). When you see with DVD Player at 100% , do you see your menus fine?
Playing at 100 your seeing at the original graphic files size: 720x480 (I guess you are working NTSC). Depending on your monitor resolution, you probably are stretching more than twice when looking at full screen.
Did you tried playing the DVD in a player on TV?
You can get here some advices about how to het better menu quality but must post some information about how you built them first.

  • IDVD - dvd plays automatically without going to the menu screen

    Hi,
I'm new to iDVD and burned my first project yesterday, after transfering it from iMovie.
A problem: I created chapter markers in iDVD, which when imported into iDVD appeared there. The home page let's you choose either to play the movie or select a scene. However, after burning the project to DVD and inserting it into a DVD player, it starts the movie automatically!
I would like it to go, by default, to the menu screen when inserting into a DVD player - so I can choose scenes. Any suggestions how I can get it to do that?
    Thank you,
    Mont

As you have rightfully pointed out above; I wouldn't assume iDvd'08 and iDvd'09 are identical versions. But they are very similar. There are more significant differences within separate iMovie versions, as well as iPhoto, GB, etc.
Have I tested the difference between iDvd'08 vs. iDvd'09? No, not yet. As soon as I do I'll make every attempt to post a few of the differences. At the moment, I'm looking into separate volumes / hard drive bootability differences between Tiger vs. Leopard on both an external FW HD as well as internal ATA and SATA hard drives. And it seems I have my work cut out for me in this regard for at least the next few weeks. As soon as I complete this latter issue I will come back to iDvd.
Under Tiger I didn't have to worry about making a clone (using CCC or SuperDuper) of my existing volume/s that contained iDvd and other i-apps. But apparently (at least at first glance) this is longer the case under Leopard.

  • Dvd Menu Adobe Premiere Elements 10 for Mac with bad resolution

    Hi, I use a MacBookPro with Mac OS X 10.6.8 - Intel Core i5 2,4 GH - RAM 4 GB.
I just purchased PRE 10 version hoping to solve a problem I had with version 9 for Mac but not with a version 7 for Win.
    I
My problem is that when I burn the dvd with the final work in PAL system, the menu of the DVD has the text very blurred at a very bad resolution.
I searched this forum and I didn't found a similar problem for Mac user.
I had the same problem with PRE 9.
Same problem if I insert a logo in the corner of the video. Very bad resolution image in the final dvd.
I tried to change the beginning resolution of the image from very low to very high and the result was the same.
Someone has similar problems? Someone did find a way to solve it?

Dear Bill, many thanks for your answer.
This is the Project Preset chosen.
As the source is a JVC Everio with hard disk, I chose PAL - Hard Disk - Widescreen 48 KHz
The source is as I said a JVC Everio in SD size. I saved the files in a backup Hard Disk. They are .mod files.
I don't know how to see if a Menu Sets is HD or SD. I tried almost all the available Menu Sets always with the same blurry results.
These images explain better than words.
Note that the firt image in the DVD Menu is perfect, not blurry. And this add a little bit of mystery :-)
this is the scene selection that has text blurry
And this is the logo I put in the right bottom side of the video. It is blurry. I put a high resolution image and it was blurry. Then I tried with an image .png with the same width of the video (720 pixels) and this is the same blurry effect:
The solution I use in these days to have goog results is very time expensive.
I make the editing work in my mac, without logo and menu. I make a dvd. Then I import the VIDEO_TS folder in my old pc, with my old version of Adobe Premiere 7.0. I insert the logo, I make the menu and then I make a dvd with my old PC and the resolution is the one I want.
Obviolusly I'd like to do all the work in my Mac...
The same problems and solution I used also with PRE 9.0
By the way, I'm using Adobe Premiere Elements in my Mac instead  iMovie because I need to do videos longer than 2 hours. And iMovie has this limit.
Many thanks in advance for help. There is someone that is using Mac and PRE 10 with GOOD results?

  • DVD: determining the menu screen

    H
I have a DVD with multiple menu screens that I am displaying
to the user fullscreen in Director. I need to intercept user click
on one particular menu button/navigation to a particular sub-menu
    screen.
In capturing DVD ebents, I don't seem to have any information
in the parameters that identifies the menu screen or button. Yes,
the data returned indicates the number of the button but I have no
idea on which menu screen this button number resides.
Anyone know how I can determine whether of not the user is on
    a particular sub-menu?
I can't even use mouseloc logic to determine which button on
the menu has ben selected as there are buttons at the same screen
    location on multiple screens.
    Thanks

    Hello,
    Please try the below steps...
    - While the printer is ON, tilt ( up/down )  the display and check if it shows up the icons.
    - Unplug the power cord from back of the printer.
    - Unplug the power cord from router.
    - Wait for 60 seconds.
    - plug in the power cord back of the printer.
    - Wait untill printer power on.
    - Once the printer shows up the home icons, you may then power on the Router.

  • Flash menu screen and related .swf "blank"?

Unable to always obtain Flash menu screen (and related .swf file). This is really odd! On some rare occassions it is possible to successfully create flash output but most times not. As the number of successes are rare, I can't analyse & determine what is going on (output to DVD & Blu-ray is fine but can't get flash)??

That sounds a little severe. Have you made any changes at all to your Mac - changed graphics cards or anything? Also, do you use a font management app like suitcase? If you do, have you turned off any of the fonts DVDSP uses as part of the system? I know it sounds odd, but this has caused all kinds of issues for people in the past and the only resolution was to turn on the system fonts again.
Have you run a hardware test (using the Apple hardware check disc that your mac came with)? I am no expert on any of this stuff, but check your graphics card... I had one with bad memory and many, many glitches started to appear which just got worse over time. Changed the graphics card and all was fine.

  • Pixalated DVD menu and flickering credits

I am currently editing a project on Premiere Elements 7.  I am having trouble with the quality of the DVD menu.  It is pixalated (to the point that some of the text is nearly unreadable).  I have also had problems with the resizing the text on the main menu. If I use the drop down box to select the text pt., the changes save fine. However, if I click on the text and resize it using the mouse icon, the changes are not permanent (the text is skewed if I restart the program or burn to disk.)
ALSO, the rolling titles or credits at the end are flickering. I have tried hitting "enter" to render the clip, and have experimented with all of the field options-without success.
I would really appreciate any help!

It looks like someone moved your post to this forum, Evan. Which is where it should be.
That said, I can think of no reason your text should be so pixelated it's unreadable on your DVD menu. At least assuming you're creating your text in Premiere Elements. The menu file is rendered from fonts at full DVD resolution.
The only possible explanation I can think of is that you're viewing this menu at more than 100%. This would be the case if, for instance, you were judging it by how it played on your computer, at full screen, rather than on your TV.
It's also possible that you're judging the quality of the menu based on the menu preview in the Disc Menus workspace. The preview will not show you the actual quality of the output. In fact, it's usually a pretty low resolution view. It's just a preview so you can test the navigation of the disc. Once the program creates your DVD, your menu file will be rendered as ful-quality 720x480 video.

  • MacBook to TV via DVI strange for DVD full screen

The TV has the same resolution as the MacBook (1024x768).
The display works fine via DVI.
DVDs displayed inside a window are ok.
However, when playing a DVD full screen, after a few seconds the visible image part of the movie moves to the top of the TV screen (having a small part, the very top, not visible anymore on TV) - while the MacBook still shows correctly the movie (with the image centered vertically).
It seems this is caused by the way the DVD player "hides" the commands (in full screen) a few seconds after the user stops moving the mouse. It seems the commands are displayed "below" the visible part of the movie on the Mac - while the TV "tries" to display it anyway, thus moves the whole 1/3 to the top.
Since the TV shows the correct screen when not playing DVD full screen, it is likely to be a problem with the DVD player.
Is there a particular setting I should focus on?

Are you using your external screen in Mirrored Mode? If so, the TV resolution and the MacBook will have the same resolution (1280 x 800 max.). If you uncheck mirrored in Display Preferences, you'll be able to get your TV's maximum resolution. This would be called extended view. Or, you could use it in [Closed Clamshell Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3131].

  • I am losing resolution when I resize or rotate a line I have drawn.

Can anyone help me?  I have been using photoshop to turn my drawings into digital stamps for crafting.  I always import my image, then with the pen tool I re-draw it in photoshop.  Usually I can take say my eye I had drawn and resize it or rotate it and it's perfect.  Lately I try any of that ant the lines will get very pixelated or lose resolution making them super fuzzy and ugly.  Does anyone know why this is now happening?
I used to be able to duplicate it and flip it to have two perfect eyes, but again when I do that now same thing happens, it gets horribly pixelated.
    I have attached two examples...
Any helps is very much appreciated.  I am having the worst time trying to figure out why it's doing this all of the sudden. It has never done that before.  I have always been able to duplicate, rotate, and resize without it losing resolution or had the lines so fuzzy or pixelated.
    Thank you,
    Betty

    Hi again,
Did you mean screen shots of my settings?  Maybe that would help?
These are all my settings, and each time I draw a line and flip it or rotate it, it starts to lose resolution.  It is also now doing it when I take the finished file and place it into a "guide" file for making a watermark catalog image. Once I shrink the photo it looses resolution really badly.

  • DVD menu title selection on DVD player with DVD's burn from iDVD

Regarding DVDs burned with iDVD 6.0.3, I have burned multiple DVDs with 6 buttons on the main menu page each of which links to a short film. On the menu screen when I push the right arrow button on the DVD remote not all the menu buttons light up. In addition to pushing the right arrow button on the remote, I have to push the up or down arrow button on the remote (to the DVD player hooked up to the TV) to get to some of the buttons in my DVD menu to be selectable. The buttons are arranged by me in a grid sort of pattern. Is there a way in iDVD I can get all the buttons to be selectable using only the right or left arrow keys on the DVD player remote? Do you understand what I am asking?

    Hi powerbookaid
And welcome to apple discussions. It's actually difficult to find standalone versions on ebay and CL / Apple's FCP and DVDSP. I found them myself but it took me a very long time. Not always something you can do overnight. But if you are very patient something will show up eventually.
If you need something now that works (although I advise caution as in backup your dvd or video_TS first) then consider this app for much less money (donationware):

  • IPhoto Slideshow images will not burn to DVD -- Green Screen

I'm trying to burn a slideshow I created in iPhoto '09 to a DVD using iDVD '09. The first few time I've done this, everything burns properly, including the DVD menu. When I select the "play" button to play the slideshow, the music that I originally entered plays correctly; however, the screen is completely green and none of the images appear.
Slideshow has 136 pictures and three songs from my iTunes library. The menu in iDVD has no music and only one pictures, using a previously loaded theme from the default options. I am burning the slideshow to 16:9 ratio, NTSC, best performance.
I have tried creating using the autoplay upon dvd insert option, which still did not work. Same green screen with slideshow music playing. I am currently trying to export the slideshow as quicktime movie then adding that to the project.
    PLEASE help. Any ideas appreciated.

I did search apple's KB again but that's the only article I could find on Green Screen so I posted it to the forum for reference purposes only....
Sorry it failed to help. I'll ask around for other suggestions and if anything comes up I'll post back.
DRM is certainly a possibility as suggested above even though I've not seen it attached/related to an issue of this nature (lines yes, but rarely the entire screen).
