Losing sound when I burn DVDs

Until today, I was always able to use iDVD 6 to create a DVD from any supported video format I happened to have on my Mac. Now I suddenly have problems. The project appears to encode and burn correctly, but when I attempt to play the DVD, either in the Mac or on our DVD player connected to the TV, the sound drops out somewhere in the first four minutes and doesn't pick up again.
I've tried re-acquiring my video sources, I've tried two different brands/kinds of DVD disc (Verbatim DVD+RW and Philips DVD+R) and nothing seems to help.
The only other factor is that the superdrive in the Mac has rejected a couple of the DVD+RW discs I've tried, as if they're not readable - it just ***** them in, chunners for about 15 seconds, then spits them out. It doesn't do this to all the discs though.
Any ideas?

Many thanks for your suggestions Rich ... they didn't solve the problem but it's the thought that counts.
My source files are all recordings of broadcast TV, saved off in the AVI container format - I don't know what's inside the AVI containers because I didn't set up the recordings in the first place. All I can say is, it was never a problem until 2 days ago.
I have now solved the issue, so I'm recording it here in the hope that it will save someone else some heartache in the future.
Taking the logical approach, I went back over all the things that have changed recently about my iMac setup. The only thing I could think of was the Perian prefpane which I added to my System Preferences. Perian (v1.1.1 installed) is a codec pack for Quicktime.
I uninstalled Perian and ran a Spotlight search to ensure everything associated with it was cleared out (it also has its own plist file in the user library folder). Perian has an 'uninstall' button within itself but this only deactivates the prefpane ... to completely eliminate it, I went ctrl+click on its icon in the main System Preferences window and selected the option to remove it.
With Perian completely eliminated from my system, I performed a re-boot, and then went straight to iDVD and re-created, from scratch, one of the projects that failed on me yesterday.
Lo and behold ... it worked.
To be absolutely certain, I'm going to go back and re-create a couple more projects and make disc images of them as well. If this turns out to be a false dawn, I'll post back here again. Otherwise please assume the problem is fixed and:
BE AWARE THAT PERIAN IS LIABLE TO MESS UP iDVD 6.

  • No sound when playing burned DVD with Windows Media Player

    Hello!
I made a 10 minute movie which I burned , tested and delivered today.
But it turns out that when playing the DVD with WMP, there is no sound.
I had tested the movie playing it with powerDVD, and it worked as it should. When playing it with a normal DVD player and TV it works allright.
But I had not tested it with WMP. And sure enough, when playing it with WMP there is no sound!
The ones who will show the DVD will do it from a computer to a video projector, and maybe they don't have a "proper" DVD program installed. But I heard that there was sound when playing with "VLC" which is a relief.
But I feel the need to get to the bottom of why there is no sound with WMP? Any clues?

In NTSC-land, one has but two choices: PCM/WAV or DD AC3, which is a particular "flavor" of MPEG. In PAL-land, one does have the option of MPEG (not DD AC3) as an option, but that seems to be falling out of favor.
When MS was re-tooling WMP, they wanted to add back the functionality of commercial (pressed/replicated) DVD's, but sought to limit any burned DVD's. Do not know what the mindset is now, so much could have changed with a few iterations of WMP. I have to admit that I just do not reach for it that often.
In the Project, or Disc, menus, one can tell En which Audio Transcoding to use. As John T, suggests, I would definitely do a test with PCM/WAV, and X my fingers.
If your client(s) is/are set on WMP as the player, there is hopefully a scheme that you can get to work. Also, remember that some older versions of WMP might not play the DVD at all, unless one finds the right plug-in, that basically hacked the intended setup in those older versions. Just like when delivering to a client, and not knowing their systems' calibration, or setup, trying to cover every base in a particular player software might involve a lot of work, and prayer.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

I am reading this post in the iphoto for iOS forum. The iPad does not burn photos to a DVD. Perhaps you'll get some assistance if you posted in th general iPhoto forum.

  • No sound when playing a DVD...

I replaced my DVD ROM with an HP dvd 1040i DVD R/RW and there is no sound when playing a DVD? I loaded the Nero 7 essentials software that came with it. My system is a HP compac dc7600 Small Form Factor. I am running Windows XP-Pro and IE8.

    Hi:
    Interesting...
Does your onboard audio work when listening to music files or playing a video on the internet?
If you have sound normally but not thru the DVD player, try this free DVD playing software. I use it all the time. See if that fixes the audio problem.

  • Losing audio when I burn the DVD a second time

When I burn a DVD all is well, but when the system prompts me to insert another DVD, then subsequent ones come up mute.
    Jean

Create a disk image file of your iDVD project and use that for subsequent burns.
From within your iDVD project, select 'save as disk image.' The process looks like the burn process, and the encoding takes just as long, but the end result is a disk image file, not a burned DVD disk. You can check the disk image file to see if it plays properly by clicking on it to mount it and then opening DVD Player (found in Applications). If the disk image file plays correctly, all the disks you burn with it will be fine. Be sure you use a good recommended brand of DVD disk such as Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden. Also, select a burn speed of 4x or less.
See these for creating disk image file and burning from it:

  • Apack sounds fine - Simulator/burned DVD definite audio pumping

Can't understand why after many days research/testing/fiddling I cannot seem to get the AC3 audio to play cleanly in DVD SP 2 simulator or when burnt to DVD...the FCP 4.5 audio is set between -12 and -6 (peaks), export as aiff files, compress in Apack at 192 kbs, stereo, -31 dialnorm (return entered), sounds great/fine when played back in Apack...import into DVD SP 2 and there is definite gain pumping or whatever one calls it throughout some tracks. Host will be speaking, at certain points, the volume will rise up, then the level will dip down for a second or two, then rise back up a bit even increasing the background hiss just a bit, then remain constant for a while, then rise up/down again...at least this always happens in the same places.
Wonder why only in DVD SP/burned DVD does this happen, and how does one overcome this? Very annoying.
    Thanks much

Just to be sure - are you hearing this in DVD Player or on a set top player?
If you look in the DVD Player preferences, have you got the disable dolby dynamic range compression checked or unchecked?
If unchecked, this can give you the same effect as you describe... so try checking it and playing the disc again.

when I burn several DVDs using the internal DVD burner on my 1.25 Ghz G4 running OS X 10.4.11, I am getting a kernel panic that tells me to reboot my computer. I'm using Toast Titanium 8 to burn with. Any ideas how to prevent this?

  • No sound when playing a DVD on my Lenovo 3000 N200 (0769-A44)

    Hi,
I recently got an N200 under Vista Home Premium.  Everything is doing well, except an annoying problem with PowerDVD 7 which is factory-installed.  When I play a DVD with PowerDVD, there is no sound.  With Windows Media player, MediaCenter and even MediaPlayer Classic, the sound is there.  Only with PowerDVD is there no sound.
Any hint on how to solve this ?
    Thanks !

Update 2008-04-30 : the problem only appears when playing commercial DVD that rely on AC3 codec for sound. For recorded DVD that use MPEG2-Layer2, sound is OK. Seems to be a limitation of PowerDVD OEM. However, if there is a solution ...

Thanks for sharing this. For the moment, and until someone finds a solution, I am relying on WMP and also on an opensource player that can play DVD, Media Player Classic :

Very easy to use. May be it will solve your problem with the DVD player noise ? There is also an excellent media play, that plays DVD, and that I intend to install : JetAudio 7, from Cowon.

When i burn a dvd on my imac - it does not play on other dvd players

    Buy iDVD on Disk.
Yes, there are other programs that will put a movie on a DVD.   I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, DVD Creator, Wondershare, and others.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie.
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/idvd.html
With iDVD you can easily and quickly create DVDs with menus and graphics almost on the level of what Hollywood can do.
IDVD is easy to get. It is available on disk as part of iLife 11.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.  (works with all Mac OS 10.5 and newer.)

  • When i burn dvd there is a skip throughout the show.  I used 431 pictures and it skips about 3 times during the playback.  Any suggestions on how to eliminate the hesitations?

When I burn my iDVD there are several times it skips (hesitates) during the show.  I have 431 shows in the show.
Any suggestions on burning a clean copy?

Thats the problem with creating slideshows in iDVD.  Slides in such a slideshow are considered to be Chapters and a Track can contain a maximum of 99 Chapters.  Early versions of iDVD only let you use 99 images in slideshows.  Newer versions let you use more images by linking Tracks together.  The problem is, many/most set top DVD players will pause/freeze on Track changes - thus the hesitation you see after every 99 images.
The only way to avoid this is to create your slideshow as a movie in iMovie, or use a commercial program like Boinx's FotoMagico (that I use) or Photo to Movie that others here use.

  • Losing Spotlight info after burning DVD

I back up all my images to DVD and in the process I insert key words in the "get info" "spotlight" box so it is easier to locate the images I'm looking for. For some reason when making the DVD the info in "spotlight" does not transfer to the DVD. Anyone have any ideas on this? A setting maybe?

Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to create a disk image, set up the image the way you want, and then burn it from the Disk Utility.

  • Distortion with sound when viewing burned movie from idvd

I created a movie in iMovie that included tracks from iTunes and exported it to create the dvd in iDVD.
When viewing it in iMovie, it sounds great.
When I exported and viewed the movie in iDVD, it sounds great.
But after I burn the dvd and view it on any of my tv's, the sound is distorted. I've tried playing the settings in iMovie changing the track volume to a lower setting but that isn't helping.
    Can anyone help?

I had a similar problem. Some of the music in my movie was distorted playing on my TV. Burning the dvd in disk utility did not make a difference, but the file was 3 times larger. Anyway while trouble-shooting I found that it played much better through the HDMI cable as opposed to the component cables. It also played ok on my older TV through the AV cables. So it is either my component out jacks on my dvd player or my component cable. I have noticed other dvd's that I made from my Imac do play very loud on all my TV's.

  • When watching burned DVD, footage is choppy/shaky

I just burned a 40 minute long clip made through Final Cut Express to a DVD. When I watch the movie file itself on the computer, it plays normally like it should be. But, after I burn it onto a DVD through iDVD and watch it on a TV, the footage is choppy during active scenes (ex. when people are dancing) and during freeze frames, it actually shakes instead of freezing. I have to show this video by Tuesday so I am in a bit of a rush to get this thing finished..
The movie file itself is compressed as "DV/DVCPRO-NTSC", exported using Quicktime conversion in Final Cut Express. I've burned two disks, one set as high quality and on widescreen, the other on high performance and on standard; both have the same results. How can I fix this? I need the footage to play smoothly and correctly, like it should be playing... anyone know? I need to get this fixed ASAP...
This Mac is running on Tiger 10.4.11 with a 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, 2GB RAM with a 233GB Hard Drive with an available space of 12GB. I am burning to a Sony DVD-R disk which has enough space for what I am trying to burn.
    Thanks.

    Hi
    a. < Hard Drive with an available space of 12GB > If this is the Main hard disk
the free space is way to low ! ! should be minimum 25Gb for iDVD to work as intended
    b. In iDVD 1-6 You can't set burn speed - it read from DVD discs and x16 is way
to high to get an usable result. (In iDVD08 this can be set to x1)
    Way around:
    • In iDVD save as DiskImage (File menu and down)
    TEST this with Apple DVD-player.
    • If it doesn't play OK try to use another encoder
    • I use Best Performance - avoids the Best Quality though I don't think it is
(In iDVD08 there is Pro Quality - I love it.)
    • Burn this to a DVD WITH Apple Disk Util tool where You can set burn speed
or use Roxio Toast™ My favourite way - so easy.
    I use Verbatim
    I use only DVD-R (No +R or +/-RW)

  • No Sound When Exporting a DVd

I am using Adobe Premiere CS4  and when I try to export a DVD to a file to be used either on Easy Worship or any other program I have no sound.  CAn you help?

    Jeff,
Sorry for the confusion.  I am wanting to import into to Easy Worship. The computer I am using for Easy Worship is a little old.  It is Windows XP Pro,  2.3 GHz and 2 GB of Ram.  When I export a Mpeg2 file I have to compress the video down to 540 x 320 and it is a little pixel. If I go over 540 then the sound becomes really distorted.   When I export is as a DVD-MPEg the video quality is a lot clearer.  Takes a bit longer to export as well.
If it is not to much to ask.  How to I export this file into Easy Worship so that it will look great.  If I export a DVD how  do I combine the Video and Audio so that I can just transfer it on a flash drive rather than DVD.
Once again,  I am using a MAc Snow Leopard.  3.06 GHz INtel Core 2 dual  4 GB Ram  500 Gig Hard Drive.

  • I am losing sound when I export my quicktime video clip into imovie

    Hi everyone,
I have a sony cybershot camera that also takes video. These videos play fine on quicktime but could not be used in imovie until I converted their format using quicktime pro. However, when I do this I get the video but it drops the sound. I did some investigating and found that the quicktime player keeps the audio and video seperate and for some reason the video is not sent when I change formats (i.e. .mov to mpeg-4). Does anyone know how I can get the sound to transfer as well so I can use the whole video + sound in imovie.

Does anyone know how I can get the sound to transfer as well so I can use the whole video + sound in imovie.
Sony Digital cameras usually save their video files as "muxed" MPEG-1 (MPEG VX) content which is "playback only" compatible with QT applications. Thus, when you use QT based applications to perform your conversion, only the video content makes it through the conversion process. In this case you need to use a third-party, MPEG-based utility to perform your conversions. iSquint (free), MPEG Streamclip (free), FFmpegX (donation-ware, and Visual Hub (pay-ware) are all popular Internet downloads which will work for you. iSquint is probably the easiest to use but limits your conversion to MPEG4/AAC and H.264/AAC compression formats which are compatible with iMovie '08. I prefer MPEG Streamclip which is more full featured and allows the use of additional formats such as DV and AIC/AIFF but is not as simple to use.
