Losing Windows XP CD Burning Capability
Has anyone encountered the loss of the standard Windows XP CD burning capability as a result of loading or upgrading iTunes?
Dell Windows XP Pro
Yes, I have seen it in Packard Bell's and Dell's. Here is why this is happening.
A) an application (such as Roxio, Nero, iTunes, etc.) is installing a driver file (as a .SYS) or replacing a working driver file that is referenced within your registry. For some folks, the replaced driver is still referenced by either an UpperFilterCheck or a LowerFilterCheck, and the device manager is actually seeking out that file that, well... no longer exists. Or, when you try and uninstall the application (iTunes is the frequent transgressor) everything is removed, including the related driver files, but the registry isn't altered... so the device manager continues to try and locate that driver file... which no longer exists.
or
B) a virus (or trojan) burrows its way into your file structure, and creates an element of itself disguised as a .SYS file. We've seen this happen before with viral elements disguising themselves as audio or video card driver files, in the efforts of masking themselves from lower-class anti-virus programs (or un-updated ones). In this case, they take on the name of a driver file that the optical drives are "familiar" with, and so, with the intention of being "fast, friendly, and efficient", the optical drives are tapped to utilize this new "driver" file... and it gets referenced in the registry as such.
However, when your anti-virus actually snaps to it, and removes the virus / trojan, and you go off on a virus-killing mission, galavanting through the registry and cleaning the little buggers out in Safe Mode and everything... you might remove the viral elements... but... the reference to them might still remain. The device manager is still looking for that "driver file", and will cause the optical drives to lock up in a Code 39 or Code 41 because of it.
Either way, the thing to do to reclaim your optical drives is located in your registry here:
HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE1 0318}
You'll want to have that open, and a mini-window of the following:
START -> CONTROL PANEL -> SYSTEM -> Hardware (tab) -> DEVICE MANAGER -> Offending Drive (with yellow tag by it) Right-Mouse-Click and PROPERTIES -> Driver (tab) -> DRIVER DETAILS
Notice that list. It references all the drivers that that particular drive is utilizing. There should be a single .DLL (dynamic link library) file and multiple .SYS files. It's the .SYS files we're focusing on, and they should be located in your C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\ folder stem. If you want to open a new window explorer, and go verify that each of those driver files still exists in that folder stem, you may.
At this point, compare the Driver File Detail list with the Registry Tree Location you're sitting in, and look at the UpperFilterCheck and LowerFilterCheck key values. Your offending key value will NOT be on your Driver File Detail list It might be as small as "PFC" or something else, but that value is referencing to a driver file that no longer exists. Delete that offending key value. Close the registry.
Close the Driver File Details and Drive Properties windows. At this point, to finish this up, you need to Soft Uninstall (Right-mouse-click on the drive, and hit "Uninstall" ) the drive(s), let the Device Manager refresh... then hit ACTION -> Scan For Hardware Changes ...
This should start a new Found New Hardware cycle, and.... poof!... your drives should be back to normal

Moving imovie project to a windows pc to burn to dvd
Hi iv been looking all over the place my question is how do i move an imovie project to a windows pc so i can use nero or something on the pc to burn the project to a dvd that can be watched with a dvd player the reason is i have no super drive
please help!!!!!!!!
iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)
iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)...because in imovie format you cant select it..
my guess was, because your harddrive is "crowded" usually, any project saved into the movies-folder on your internal drive, should be available via iDVD... (??)
.. Plan B): create a new iDVDproject, and drag'n drop your iMproject (icon has a black star on it) into the iDVD window...
then, choose in iDVD "create image"; that creates a "digital, virtual" copy of your final disk => "mydvd.img",... following the advices I posted above, you can use any window app to burn from that a videoDVD, compatible with all standalone DVDplayers/PC/Mac dvd-player-apps PLUS all shinin' blinkblink of an iDVD-production. -
Trying to burn data on a CD-R disk, but then I get a window that says, "Burning failed" , and that one of the volumes on the disc is still in use", so what does this mean? Not sure what they mean by volume still in use, this apparentely is keeping me from burning info such a pictures and or video's, how can I fix this?

You have a disc inside your optical drive.

Remove the extra disc.
My answers are basic because:
You never told us which model iMac you have?
How you are burning? Through iMac? External burner?
Which OS you are currently using? -
Until today, I was always able to use iDVD 6 to create a DVD from any supported video format I happened to have on my Mac. Now I suddenly have problems. The project appears to encode and burn correctly, but when I attempt to play the DVD, either in the Mac or on our DVD player connected to the TV, the sound drops out somewhere in the first four minutes and doesn't pick up again.
I've tried re-acquiring my video sources, I've tried two different brands/kinds of DVD disc (Verbatim DVD+RW and Philips DVD+R) and nothing seems to help.
The only other factor is that the superdrive in the Mac has rejected a couple of the DVD+RW discs I've tried, as if they're not readable - it just ***** them in, chunners for about 15 seconds, then spits them out. It doesn't do this to all the discs though.
Any ideas? Many thanks for your suggestions Rich ... they didn't solve the problem but it's the thought that counts.
My source files are all recordings of broadcast TV, saved off in the AVI container format - I don't know what's inside the AVI containers because I didn't set up the recordings in the first place. All I can say is, it was never a problem until 2 days ago.
I have now solved the issue, so I'm recording it here in the hope that it will save someone else some heartache in the future.
Taking the logical approach, I went back over all the things that have changed recently about my iMac setup. The only thing I could think of was the Perian prefpane which I added to my System Preferences. Perian (v1.1.1 installed) is a codec pack for Quicktime.
I uninstalled Perian and ran a Spotlight search to ensure everything associated with it was cleared out (it also has its own plist file in the user library folder). Perian has an 'uninstall' button within itself but this only deactivates the prefpane ... to completely eliminate it, I went ctrl+click on its icon in the main System Preferences window and selected the option to remove it.
With Perian completely eliminated from my system, I performed a re-boot, and then went straight to iDVD and re-created, from scratch, one of the projects that failed on me yesterday.
Lo and behold ... it worked.
To be absolutely certain, I'm going to go back and re-create a couple more projects and make disc images of them as well. If this turns out to be a false dawn, I'll post back here again. Otherwise please assume the problem is fixed and:
BE AWARE THAT PERIAN IS LIABLE TO MESS UP iDVD 6. -
Does my iMac have DVD burning capability?
I recently bought an external HP dvd1270e only to find out it won't run unless I go out and spend a bunch for Windows 7 or some version, got me thinking whether my internal is already set up to burn. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm fairly new to the Mac community, so still a lot to learn.
In Finder goto Help and type in DVD... Plenty of good Information there,

ITunes for Windows - Error when burning 4651
A friend of mine is having a problem with iTunes. Everytime he tries to burn a CD, iTunes gives an error - error 4651. Anyone know what that means. I am pretty sure he is running XP.
I told him to upgrade iTunes and see if that helps. He had iTunes 7.0 - should 7.2 fix the problem?
Windows XPhmmmm. is it possible to post a copy of his DVD/CD diagnostics for us to look at?
(to get those, in iTunes go "help > run diagnostics", select DVD/CD diagnostics. the output can be saved as a text file, so if the complete contents of that could be pasted into a reply here, that would be excellent.) -

Itunes 10.5 for windows will not burn cds. Can you help?
I installed the 10.5 version of Itunes and it will not burn blank cds.
System: MIcrosoft Windows XP 2002. 32bit. Service Pack 3.
Solutions Tried:
--Clean re-install of Itunes
--Downloaded GEAR drivers
--Deleted and re-added upperfilters to registry (with correct GEAR string)
--Tested CD burner (NERO works)
--Reinstalled CD drivers
I am unable to solve the problem. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
BFThanks for the tip re. cntrl v. I've copied the diagnostics below.
I've tried all of Apple's troubleshooting advice without success. For example, my burner (and drivers and cables etc) all work fine. I've also tried all of their 'advanced' steps in relation to downloading GEAR drivers etc. Nada.

Windows XP: Disc Burner or Software Not Found/No Supported Disc Burners
I am running Windows XP SP2 with all the latest updates on a Sony VAIO laptop. I recently upgrade to iTunes 7.3.1 and discovered that I was unable to burn audio CDs. iTunes does not recognize the CD burner in my laptop. I have other CD burning software (Sonic), and have successfully burned both an audio CD and a data CD using the software.
When I insert an audio CD, iTunes is able to recognize it and offers to import it into my library.
I searched the forums and used some suggestions from other users to revert back to the 7.2 and 7.1.1 software. The burner is still not recognized. I've even gone through the regedit exercise, removing anything related to iTunes, short of the files stored under My Music\iTunes.
I have an OEM desktop computer (Windows XP) that is also having the same problem (no disc burner found). The desktop is also able to insert an audio CD and have iTunes recognize it and offer to import it.
I would appreciate any help anyone can provide on this.Gabrix is correct. It turned out the issue was with Daemon tools - which I had uninstalled, but which leaves nasty little drivers on your system.
Thanks for to some help from friends, I found this link: http://forums.techguy.org/multimedia/582230-problem-disc-burner-software-not.htm l which points both how to completely uninstall Daemon and how to update Daemon if you wish to keep it on your system.
I hope this helps. It's sure better than having my system reboot every time I try to run the diagnostics check. -
Uninstalling Roxio Sonic caused loss of cd burning capability in Itunes 9
I unfortunately removed all Roxio Sonic software from my Win Xp Sp3
computer
which caused an error 39 loss of cd/dvd in device manager. I applied the
microsoft registry fix involving deleting UpperFilters and LowerFilters
values for a specific regisry key mentioned
here:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314060
All my burning applications work normally such as Nero 9, Imageburn and
Deepburner except Itunes 9. When I open Itunes I get this error:"Warning
The
registry settings used by Itunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and
DVDs is missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD
burning
software. Please reinstall Itunes"
I uninstalled and reinstalled several times and also tried a repair of the
program to no avail. I also installed the latest Gearsoft drivers with the
same result.
Any suggestions that you can provide will be greatly appreciated. ThanksI fixed the problem by following a fix I read elsewhere in this forum. I recreated a new UpperFilters multi string value in registry utilizing [inputing] "GEARAspiWDM" carriage return, closed the registry editor After a reboot everything is back to normal again.

Losing windows from Firefox after closing them.
I have been using Firefox instead of Chrome for a long time as with Firefox it is easier to navigate through my tabs (unlike Chrome that lumps them together -- you can't even see the title of each tab if you have say, 20 tabs) and the fact that firefox only loads tabs on demand -- which saves me a lot of lag compared to Chrome that loads all tabs when you start it.
I'm an avid online shopper so I tend to open up close to 40 tabs per session/window for shopping, and then I would have another window open to do my work. Usually, I set my settings to 'Open tabs and windows from previous session' so I can open up my first window, then go to 'Recently closed windows' to open my second. It has been working perfectly, until today when my Firefox got updated. I would completely lose my first window no matter how much 'System restore' I did on my computer. (I close my windows in the sequence of second-first so that I can opne it the same way again)
Is there a way to fix this problem? I would hate to lose my important tabs and it would be a hassle if I had to mix the two together.Which Operating System are you using as you appear to have posted with a mobile device?
It is best to use Firefox/File > Exit if you want to preserve all open windows.
If you first close each of the other windows then only the last closed window will be reopened.
Maybe Firefox updated to 25.0.1 and that has caused this to happen (a restart with only the last window opening) -

Losing audio when I burn the DVD a second time
When I burn a DVD all is well, but when the system prompts me to insert another DVD, then subsequent ones come up mute.
JeanCreate a disk image file of your iDVD project and use that for subsequent burns.
From within your iDVD project, select 'save as disk image.' The process looks like the burn process, and the encoding takes just as long, but the end result is a disk image file, not a burned DVD disk. You can check the disk image file to see if it plays properly by clicking on it to mount it and then opening DVD Player (found in Applications). If the disk image file plays correctly, all the disks you burn with it will be fine. Be sure you use a good recommended brand of DVD disk such as Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden. Also, select a burn speed of 4x or less.
See these for creating disk image file and burning from it:

when i play back the newly burned disc, the image on the tv set is cut off on each side.( there is still room on each side of the tv set for the image to show but it is as if the movie was cut about 2-3 inches off on each side) but not when i play it back on my computer?? Why is this and what can I do to fix it?Also the tv set has wide and normal modes this does not change the loss of size. (I guess you can say it is cropped.)
