Loss in pdf output quality

Hello
I have just 'upgraded' my computer.  I used to work on XP, now I'm on W7.
When I create a pdf the quality of eps and png files is greatly reduced in quality.
This applies if I use Adobe pdf or cute pdf.
I have attached a file:

What settings for PS/PDF printing? (esp resolution & down-sampling)?
What settings for Distilling?
Doing any Acrobat post-processing? (optimizing?)
ps - I don't see any difference. Did you post both?
Error7103, you are a true God of this forum.
Distilling it did the trick.
Funny how I didn't figure this out on my own, but that's the problem with being a one man department I suppose.

  • Problem with PDF output quality

We recently upgraded to CS4 Suite Design premium and i am having problems getting illustrator to print high quality output.  I have a file created in illustrator which contains 300dpi tiff images created in photoshop (CMYK colorspace in both photoshop image and illustrator file)  when i print this file to pdf everything looks hi-rez except these images.  i have attempted adjusting all the obvious settings in the print dialoge box including:  Output/Printer Resolution, Graphics/Postscript level, Advanced/overprint and transparency flattener options/custom settings.  and nothing has worked.  Other things i have noted, is that in the print dialog box the only presets listed are Custom, Default and Default Web/Video/Mobile.  I have looked through the online help files and found the info on how to add "High Quality Print" to my adobe pdf presets, however it doesn't work.  furthermore i have tried the instructions here: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Illustrator/14.0/WSA79FA899-BC95-401e-BD44-5B26BC31B369.html  where it says to move the files from "Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Application Support\Adobe PDF"  however there is no folder called "Application Support" on my system.  I have run out of ideas.
The odd thing here, is that i can take the AI file into photoshop, and print a "High Quality Print" from photoshop with no problems, but i'd like to remove this step to speed up my workflow.
I've attached both the high-quality pdf output from photoshop and the low-quality pdf output from illustrator for reference. (look closely at the logo's)

Figured it out myself! yay!  (only took my entire moring)
    The solution:
    Dont print to PDF!
SAVE AS COPY, then select Adobe PDF and click SAVE, this will bring up a dialog box with the options you need (including the "High Quality Print" Adobe PDF Preset)
This was not clear in any of the instructions i read

  • Images are not clear in pdf output

    Hi,
Images are blurred once a pdf file is generated. Don't understand why. Please let me know a solution to get pictures with better clarity after generating a pdf .
I used to shrink the images a bit to set them in the Framemaker area. Once the pdf is generated, the quality is blur.
Please advice how to get images with good clarity and visibility.
    Thanks

  • Controlling PDF Output Resolution when converting AutoCAD to PDF

I have a standalone java application that converts AutoCAD formats to PDF using the VectorConvertOptions AutoVue API settings. The transformations work fine but on some documents the PDF output quality is bad. Any tips or code snippets as to how to manipulate the transformation in order to create higher resolution PDF's? Im thinking I have do something with the pen settings?
    Thanks in advance!

DPI is controlled by the AutoVue Document Converter driver
It can not be modified through the convert options
Your drawing is probably small enough so that it does not fit the default settings, but printing uses a 150 DPI by default and convert defaults to 300 or 600 depending on the version you have
So getting a better picture when you print than convert is something you would not expect, unless DPI for convert has already been modified.
Even through PDF is a vector format, it uses integer number for the coordinates (in points)
so you are bound to run into this issues the smaller the drawing you are trying to convert
That is even more problematic if you have fixed width line styles (like acad has)
Which version of AutoVue are you using?

  • Poor quality PDF output

    Hi,
I have noticed that the PDF output when using Rome on Windows is quite poor and is far inferior to an outputted PDF from a Mac.
When you use a drop shadow on a piece of text it is displayed in low quality (even if the high quality option is selected on the filter).  This is not the case if you generate an interactive PDF on a PC where the text is smooth and crisp with a beautiful drop shadow.

    Hi Mike,
What version of CRJava runtimes are you using?
We have recently released a new version of the ruintimes, try upgrading to 12.0.18. download here.

  • Why a difference between picture quality in InDesign and PDF output

We are comparing the CS5 pdf output of our book with the ID version. The images are MUCH clearer and the colors are better when we view a page inside of ID side by side with the PDF. The pictures actually look blurry in the PDF, even though we are outputting at 600dpi.When we export to PDF in cs6, the clarity is much better but the color is still a little off. Is this normal?

The X-1a exporting from CS5 looks much better than the normal output, and better than the CS6 output. What would cause that?
If you export a CMYK PDF with no profiles and open it in AcrobatPro, Acrobat's Color Management's Working CMYK space handles the preview. So here's the difference between two very different profiles Fogra Coated and SNAP Newsprint:
When you export PDF/X-1a an output intent profile is included (usually your document's CMYK profile) and that is used in Acrobat for previewing CMYK instead of the current CMYK working space.

  • Loss of Illustration (.ai) quality when printing to PDF

Hello - (This was cross-posted two days ago in the Acrobat forum)
We're running into some unpredictable problems when converting a structured (non-XML) FrameMaker file to PDF. Our images are created in Illustrator (CC), and inserted into FrameMaker (12) as a linked file. In Frame, the illustrations look perfectly fine.
On export to PDF (Acrobat XI), whether "Save as PDF", "Print" to postscript, or "Print" directly to PDF, some illustrations show up "fuzzy" on the screen. It's not the entire graphic, but seemingly random sections of the illustrations that are pixelated. The illustrations are layered, vector, non-outlined .AI files. When printed from the PDF output, the "fuzzy" sections are clear.
Adobe PDF settings (in Distiller XI) are optimized for online viewing.
If a problematic illustration is opened in Illustrator, the section that is pixelated in the PDF don't exist as overlays or layers in the AI file. When I say 'don't exist', I mean that if you select each and every layer individually, selections are never the entire pixelated area.
I have recreated the entire file in InDesign (to see if the problem is related to the Illustrator file, or the distilling process), and when I print to a PDF using the "Smallest File Size" PDF preset, the output is clear, both on screen and printed. A colleague has opened an older version (FM 10), and distilled with Distiller XI as well as Distiller X. From the older versions of Frame, the output is less pixelated, but there is still pixelation in the exact same locations.
    Windows 7
    Adobe Illustrator CC
Adobe FrameMaker 12 (Structured but not XML-based)
    Acrobat Distiller XI
Thank you so much in advance for your help.

The explanation I'm seeing is that for FM, it should be saved as .eps, not .pdf. But I also read that importing as .ai simply processes in the same manner as .pdf placement.
We aren't having issues with bloated files by saving as .ai with PDF compatibility turned on, however. And so I can't figure out why for the last 2 versions of FM/AI, this hasn't been an issue. The times we've had problems with the graphics, there have actually been overlays that didn't belong in the .ai file, and once removed, yielded perfectly clear illustrations in the output PDF file (exported from FM).
I'll check to see if we have the same issues with files saved as .PDF or .EPS, which was a work-around we have considered in the department, but one we wanted to avoid, since it means saving 2 of the same file, just in different formats (and may result in updating the .ai and forgetting the "save as" step to the other format, resulting in a linked file not updating).
Thanks, and I'll test in the morning when I have an illustrator and my copy of FrameMaker available to me.

  • Unhandled exception in Word when building PDF output

We have a RoboHelp 7 project that has worked fine for quite some time.  Now, after what seemed to be a minor edit, we are no longer able to generate PDF output because Word dies with an exception.  Other projects on the same system build just fine.
The project runs the first series of Generating PDF but the second one never occurs and the error below is generated by word.
Any ideas on what we can do to get this to start working again would be appreciated.
    Dana

    Hi there
While I'm at a total loss as to tell you how to change the behavior, I might ask if you are able to simply generate a Word document without PDF in the picture? If so, gen the Word document, then create the PDF from that as a separate operation.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Lower PDf graphics quality after upgrade from v8 to v9

Some PDF Graphic quality is poorer whne using the new Acrobat compared to version 8.
I recently purchased Acrobat 9 Pro extended as part of the TCS2 and installe dhtis on a new machine. The installation replaces Acrobat 8 professional installed on a different machine.
I have checked the job options in detail on each machine and they appear to be identical.
The problem is most notable in a graphic header which appears on the first page of the Word document template from which the PDF is generated. The file is an imported PNG with a complex blue gradient band and the company logo across the top of the page. The band is underlined by a thinner grey band which fades vertically to white. In the resulting output, blue colors show too bright and quite different to the original PNG graphic. The grey band does not fade smoothly and appears as separate bands.
My colleague has installed Acrobat 9 on the same machine as the previous Acrobat 8 installation and is experiencing the same issue.
I have tried generating a PDf with an old known good file base don the same word template and the result  is the same so this probably rules out the Word template. Older PDFs generated with the v8 Acrobat do not do not display this way and i still can generate PDFs using the old machine and version 8 Acrobat without any problems.
Can anyone suggest how i might progress with this?

There are no display problems because i can satisfactorily generate the file using the Print option and selecting the AdobePDf printer.
I have set the Color Management Policies of the joboption to Convert all Colors to CMYK from Leave Color Unchnaged and this seems to improve the quality considerably so i'll stick with that. Some gray color gradient doesnt seem to convert smoothly and shows as varying bands of shades of gray but i can live with that, unless i can find a setitng that handles that.

  • Problems with image on PDF output.

In my report, I inserted an image (.jpg format) in the margin section. The background of the image is white. In Oracle Reports Builder, the image was just fine. However, when generating the PDF output, it seems like the image in  PDF was mixed with another color, or the background color has been changed. Why?
Due to confidential information, I cannot provide the screenshot here.

Appears to be a case of exceeding the original 100% w/h of the images.
Generally the images should be 'prepped' in size (to match the quality when zoomed). So the starting size of the images/icons on the stage should be scaled smaller - then the zoom will factor to the original size. I hope that made some sense.

  • PDF Output Preview Inconsistent

I have created a document in Framemaker and printed it out to a PDF.  When I check the PDF Output Preview to see if there is any color by turning off Process Black, I find an image that shows up as gray.  If I then scroll to the bottom of my PDF and then come back to this image, it no longer shows up.  I've had another person in the office check the file and the same thing happens.  The image in question was created in Illustrator before being imported into Framemaker.  All the colors were set to black.
Is this a bug in how the PDF is displaying the Output Preview?  Or is there an issue with the image?

I ordered a book a couple of weeks ago with the advice of AppleCare people responsible for printed product, that the PDF which is seen in the purchase process is what the final output would look like.
However, and to my disappointment, it was not the case. Indeed, the PDF was cropped on the edges. The AppleCare people ordered a reprint to see if any change would appear, but unfortunately it was not the case.
Now the matter is within AppleCare quality control's jurisdiction and I do not know yet what will be their conclusion. I'll keep you posted if you are interested.

  • Recorded Text Entries are displayed unclean in PDF Output

I'm creating currently a screencast with Captivate 7. Within this screencast, I have to type an adress into the adress bar of Internet Explorer. Captivate records this entry automatically in Full Motion, this works good.
But I had to note, that the output in PDF destroys the text entry. During the entry, the textcursor appears after every single sign and the entry becomes unclean.
This problem appears also, when I'm scaling the project. Then it appears in all outputs.
Does anyone have the same problem and a solution for this problem?
This picture shows the problem in PDF Output.

Try turning off all compression options in Preferences > Project > SWF Size and Quality.  Also try setting quality of any affected slides to High 24bit or Optimized. Then republish and test again.

  • IDVD output quality

I'm trying to create a slide show with music using iDVD ver 7.1.2 running on Mac OS X ver 10.6.8 and the output quality is very poor.  I'm using high quality jpg files some from Lightroom and others from Photoshop CS5.  Both are highest quality when saving or exporting.  I've tried all thee encoding settings in iDVD with no noticable difference.  I've tried to drop the photos directly into iDVD and also tried to put them in iPhoto and export them to iDVD...nothing works for me.  What am I doing wrong?

    Hi
There are several layers to this
    • DVD - is as Standard (whatever program used) - interlaced SD-Video - and can not be anything better than this.
    • How material was created to iDVD matters
iMovie'08 to 11 - is not the tool of choise if quality is of importance - as they can not export interlaced video any way known to me - but does this by discarding every second line resulting in a sever quality loss
iMovie HD6 and FinalCut are so much better - as they can deliver 100% interlaced video over to iDVD
    • How material is sent to iDVD matters
Share to iDVD - I NEVER USE as this makes iMovie any version to render (badly)
iMovie'08 to 11 - Share to Media Browser and as Large (NOT HD or other resoultion as this too degrades final quality) - forces iMovie to NOT RENDER and iDVD to do this (and so much better)
iMovie HD6 - just close it and import the movie icon into iDVD and iDVD renders.
Else my notes on DVD Quality
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn speed as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show

  • Script PDF output is printing distorted

    Hi,
At the time of printing script output I have set Option paramter 'ITPO' to generate spool request.I sent this spool request PDF output to external mail by SP01. But when I download this PDF output form mail and print, priting quality gets distorted. Why this is happening? Please help how to overcome this issue.
    Regards

    Hi,
    Thanks for ur reply.
What I deed and what I want is explained below:
    1. I have developed a script form and driver program which is used for invoice printing.
    2. Our client wants to send this invoice on external mail. What i deed for this that I am using the spool request which is created during the print of output.
    3. Then I am using transaction code SP01 to send spool PDF to external mail.
    4. This script PDF output is sent successfully on external mail as an attachment. User saves this PDF attachement and print on their printer.
    5. PROBLEM is when user open this attachment and prints this PDF, the printing gets distorted.
Note: I have also used another way by function module and program, but the result is same, PDF attachemnt printing gets distorted. It is not the same as get printing through ZTCODE printing of this script.
