Loss of color

Capturing with AuroraIgniterX lossed color - gray scale only. Swapped Aurora card, cables - tried both composite and S-video - dropped preferences, re-installed Final Cut Pro - no help. Will capture color in DV format, but not analog.

Sounds like you may be viewing the exported images in a non ICC application or browser. LR is correct, those applications are not providing a correct preview. You can check your browser here:

  • Huge loss of color on images. Please help.

When saving my presentation into a quicktime file, all my images become so dull with loss of color/vibrancy etc. (I save it this way, because I use this file on my IWeb built website) Any ideas on how to correct. Thanks in advance.

Are you using QuickTime Pro? If so, when you open your QT presentation, the Window menu in the toolbar includes "Show A/V Controls", and there you'll find sliders to adjust color, contrast, etc.
Even so, visitors to your website won't necessarily see the same image quality on their screens that you see on yours; so it may be wise to keep your adjustments on the moderate side.

  • Loss of Color in my images when placed into IDD.

I am a photographer working on a book involving stained glass, the accurate color reproduction of my images is super important. When I place my images inside the IDD file, there is an immediate loss of color information. It looks like what one gets when jpgs are compressed to much.
If import and sRGB file into IDD CC, it losses a lot of info and is unacceptable, however when I import an Profoto RBG file into IDD it looks close, but not quite there. See the attached file.
Tiffs or uncompressed JPG's, it doesn't make a difference. The color spaces are all set to profoto RGB to get it close, but I would like the images to look as they do in Photoshop.
The attached file is a side by side of the image displayed in PS on the left, the imbedded file in IDD on the right. They are close, but you will notice a loss of color information, less saturation, and the backgrounds are a little different.
How can I get IDD to display the images as PS does?
    Thank you.
    Tom

It really seems like a profile issue
What profile is listed in the Links panel when you select the image. I can replicate your screen capture by placing the image with proPhoto embedded and then duplicating it and overridding the profile to AdobeRGB:
Links showing the left image with its original proPhotoRGB profile
Links showing the right image with profile set to AdobeRGB via Object>Image Color Settings

  • External display scrolling causing loss of color

I've started running my MacBook Pro with an external display and this strange bug with scrolling has started coming up: After running for a while, a single-app will start to desaturate windows when they scroll. I've seen it happen in the Finder, Safari and Xcode.
Only the part of the window that has scrolled will lose color (the color actually fades as it scrolls) -- anything new scrolling into the window is bright and colorful when it first appears, then it loses color too. This ONLY happens when scrolling.
The display is a Samsung 226BW on my Leopard 10.5.1 running original MacBook Pro. (The original Core Duo MBP.) I'm using DVI-D to hook it up. I'm usually running the external monitor by itself (with the MBP lid closed to deactivate the internal display).
Quitting the app and restarting seems to fix it, but this is a big hassle for obvious reasons (especially when the app is the Finder ;P)
And here I was thanking my lucky stars that I haven't had quick user switching kill my display calibration anymore on Leopard =)
    Any ideas would be appreciated!

    I'm having a similar problem.
MDD G4, ATI Radeon 9000 Pro connected to a FujitsuSiemens Scaleoview 24".
In Safari for example the screen brightness reduces suddenly whilst scrolling, but literally from one pixel to the next! If I scroll back one pixel it brightens again. A similar thing can happen simply by going from one tab to another.
In the finder it can happen when the dock appears or by simply calling up certain windows. Restarting the finder seems to cure it for a while.
I'm starting to think that it maybe has something to do with Core Image/Quartz Extreme because it only seems to occur in Apple apps (Finder, Mail, Safari, etc).
I've tried all of the Monitor, Energy Saver, etc etc settings but to no avail - similarly, any ideas would be much appreciated!

  • Loss of color from screenshots.

When I take a screenshot and paste it into photoshop I am losing a lot of color.  Here I took a rainbow gradient and placed consecutive screenshots side by side.
The first bit is the original, then the first screenshot, then a screenshot of that, and so on. I've been looking for answers and found a few people with similar problems, but I seem to have all of the settings correct according to those solutions.  I am using Win7 x64, I have the latest drivers for my video card (GeForce GTX580), the image is set to RGB, and my working space is sRGB IEC61966-2.1.  any ideas?

Open the screen shot and assign your display profile to the image then convert to sRGB.

  • Loss of color labels and other assorted bad things...

My G5 seems to be acting a little weird lately- nothing I can pin down but lots of little things.
    • Beachballs spinning at odd times and places.
    • If I have assigned a color label to a TextEdit document, all of a sudden resaving the document causes the color label to reset to "no color". This seems to be a new trick, and I'll bet nothing good will come of that.
    • When opening some (but not all) graphic files with GraphicConverter, all of a sudden a "ghost image" of the picture paints itself on my right screen (of a two-screen setup). The actual GraphicConverter window itself is located on the left screen real estate, which is where I want it, but this "ghost image", without any framing, appears right in the middle of the right screen just after the normal GraphicConverter window opens on the left screen. Suspiciously, the size of the "ghost image" seems to be the same size as the actual legitimate image showing in the GraphicConverter window. I have my screen set to change the background picture every minute or so, and when it repaints the "ghost image" disappears. Moving any other window over the "ghost image" also erases it (like using a blackboard eraser).
Just to make this REALLY challenging, this problem seems to be inconsistent, as it does not do this every time. If there is a pattern here, I'm missing it.
So far (I think, but can't be sure) all of the graphics which fall victim to this phenomena have been scans by my Cannon scanner. Have had this scanner for a long time with no previous problems. If I open the same files which cause GraphicConverter to misbehave with other graphics-handling apps, there doesn't seem to be any problem with the other apps.
    Some general background info:
    • Have reinstalled the GraphicConverter app, and discarded it's preference files, but no help.
    • Have also reinstalled the Cannon driver app, and discarded it's preference files, but again no help.
    • If I boot the computer from a different (backup) external HD the same situation seems to exist. However, since I backup pretty often (using SuperDuper), if there is some sort of OS issue which has been building up it may be possible that the backup HD now simply has the same problem as the main internal HD.
    • I did rebuild my directories with DiscWarrior a few weeks ago, for what that's worth. Have done that in the past with no problems occurring.
    • The main internal HD is a fast 10000 rpm, and is partitioned into two sections: one section holds all of the OSX-10.4.10 and related operating files (apps, utilities, libraries and associated hooga-booga), with about 9.2gb still open. The other partition holds everything else, also with about 9.2gb still open. Three separate external HDs hold pretty much nothing but music files for iTunes.
    All ideas will be appreciated!
    Thanks- 0db

Have just noticed activity monitor is indicating very unusual activity in something called "TruBlueEnvironment", whatever that is. It is currently accounting for over 95% of CPU activity, and these spikes may be the cause of the beachballs appearing at rather odd times.
For anyone who knows what this may be all about, here are some current stats from the Activity Monitor:

  • Text color changes when more than one color is used in the same paragraph in a bulleted list

I work in a print shop on designers' files preparing them for print. Machine I use is an iMac, plenty of RAM, running Tiger 10.4. Here is my problem: A PC user sent us an InDesign CS3 file. A portion of the text is styled as a bulleted list with character color and bullet (the solid circle) defined as (default) black. However, the style is over-ridden on the bullet and first two words following the bullet with a spot color red, which is present in the Swatches palette (PMS 186). The remainder of the sentence stays black. The text somehow lost this override, and instead of keeping the 2 different colors all the text changed to black. This seems to have occurred when I saved the file on my machine. When I go back and open the original file the text is still colored both red and black. I think that the file was originally an InDesign CS2 file, and could even have been a Indd version 1 or Quark file. Why did the color change with no user intervention? Also, I can't understand why, when the first 2 words are highlighted and changed to red, the bullet also changes to red. (That is good, of course, because that is what we want, but I don't understand how that happens when the character style is black, and I can't even highlight the bullet itself). I sure would appreciate any ideas anyone has on this, I have to try to explain why we printed the text in black when it was supposed to be red and black!

thanks Alan and Bob. Nothing has explained the loss of color so far.
Alan, I will suggest to the designer that she use a nested style. I wonder if that will make the styling more stable moving accross the different platforms.
Bob, I feel like you may have thought, as I did, that hundreds of saves and saved-as and many different applications would have damaged the file, but as you could see by the History, the file was fairly fresh.
There is a very outside chance that I wiped out the style overides by command click but I am really careful and I doubt it.
So I'll thank you both again and check back each day, perhaps this will happen to someone else and become an issue. I have tried to repeat my actions and cause the error again but to no avail.

  • Serious problem with a color correction

    Ok so here´s the deal....
I have a 83.62 Gb quicktime movie file. It came from a  Black and White color corretion made in Scratch and it was delivered to me wit a Uncompressed 32-bit ARGB codec.
I need to work with it on FCP, so i compressed it to Apple Pro Res 422(HQ) and then imported it to final.
While in final cut, a played the commpressed clip on the viewer and .....(HERE´S THE TRICKY PART).....it losses the color correction on the playback, but as soon as i pause it, it recovers the color correction again.
I´ve asked a few friends about it and nobody seems to understand what´s going on. The clip recognizes the color correction ONLY WHILE PAUSED. Not on playback, not even if I play it the Quicktime application. I´m completly lost.
I have a Mac Pro 2x2.4 Ghz Intel Xeon , with a  6 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC memory and a ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB graphics card. With FCP7 running.
I will greatly aprecciate your advice on this one!

Besides the fact that FCP plays videos at low quality for resources sake, I would suggest you export a two second clip (with current settings) and check about colour correction in quick time. If there is a problem convert original again in compressor but this time in the colour tab select the HD 709 colour space. The 709 space manains grading across conversions.
I underlined the 422 and not the 422 HQ but you get the gist...

  • Removing color casts, and correcting colors to match reference materials? any guides/tutorial/videos

I have been looking for tutorials showing how to use SpeedGrade. I am now comfortable with the UI enough to use it after watching these: http://www.youtube.com/user/AdobeTV/videos?query=speedgrade
I am looking for tutorials that show how to do a couple things, first I would like to be able to remove any color casts. In photoshop to do this you can use a curves layer and use the set white point color picker and click somplace that is supposed to be white. and in premier you could do something similar using the Fast Color Corrector. So basically I am looking for a way to target an area in a frame that should be grays, In Anime, the eyes generally will always be shades of gray, so that is what I would target usually when working with anime in photoshop/premiere. If anyone knows of a tutorial that shows how to do this type of color cast removal color correction in SpeedGrade could you please share a link.
Some of the older 80's and 90's anime on film, the film has aged and that is where the color cast came from. There is also a loss of color information across the board. For instance in the below picture. The sky is supposed to be more blue instead of teal/sea green.
Another thing is back in the 80s and 90s a lot of Anime worked from limited color palletes; something like maybe 16 colors total, so a lot of colors are used repeatedly. So even with only a limited amount of reference material I should be able to get the corrections close. (I dont have reference clips for every single episode, only a handful of scenes from a handful of episodes.)
I have some reference material showing approximately what the colors should be. So my next question is if anyone knows of any tutorials/guides/videos showing how to use SpeedGrade to color correct a clip so that the colors match up with the colors used in a reference clip
I was also wondering about auto correction based on a reference clip, although I am guessing this is still not possible.
When I watched the websiminar: http://seminars.adobeconnect.com/_a227210/p738pxm9zs0/  at about 43 minutes into it, a feature is shown that automatically adjust the color using a clip that contains a colorchart.
I was wondering if a tool like that could analyse a clip start to finish, to create a pallete of used colors, and then compare that to the colors used in another clip and correct them. (a feature like this would probably be more useful/accurate in anime than it would liveaction but who knows.)
    Another UI related question:
I did have one question, the only place I see to access the colorwheels is in the looks tab, my video I am working on, just manages to fit at 100% in the monitor.
So I would prefer to hide or collapse the different looks(maybe even with a hotkey) so that I can access the color tools that it is covering, I attached a picture of what I am talking about. I know pressing "P" hides everything at the bottom, and figured maybe there is already a way to hide/minimize/collapse the look presets to access the tools behind them without shrinking down the size of the monitor preview.

There is a special grading filter called "Color match" which can assist in cross-referencing the black/white/gray levels from one playhead to another but it's not documented yet. The suggested way to set black/white/gray points in Sg is to adjust it visually, using the waveforms as a guide, but there's no chance of doing that for something as small as a character's eye. There's no "eyedropper" picker on the primary grading panel because Sg isn't a correcting tool, but a cinematic grading tool. 99% of the time the end result of an Sg grading session is a long way from what the camera pixels actually recorded.
If all you are doing is reversing a color cast  then Speedgrade isn't the right tool to use - you should be working in Premiere Pro (with the Fast or 3-Way Color Correctors). If you're a Photoshop person the UI is much more recognizable, it'll handle all the native footage you can throw at it, and you get your B-G-W eyedroppers.
In Speedgrade CS6 you cannot hide the Presets panel in the Look or Mask tab. The UI is really designed for use in a two-monitor system (which all professional colorists will have), and/or with a hardware controller (which means you can keep the entire  bottom panel hidden).

  • Aperture - how can I get my colored icons back ??? I don´t like it grey in grey !!!

    Hello,
is there any chance to restore the colorful icons in Aperture 3?
Whatever possible reason the developers may have had, to make
it all grey in grey... I don´t like it that way !!!
Just the same like the loss of colorful icons since OSX Lion...
In my opinion it was much better before, as the combination
of pictograms + color is much more intuitive !!!

The icons are stored inside the Aperture Application package, in the folder
         Contents > Resources
If you want the color back, copy all colored icons (all the tiff images inside this folder) from a previous Aperture version to this folder in the current Aperture version.
To reveal this folder, select the Aperture application in the Finder, cntl-click it, select "Show Package Contents".
But consider carefully, if you really want to patch the Application package. You have to be very careful, and you will have to do it over and over again, with each new update.

  • Changing color label of edits coming back from photoshop

I am currently using lightroom 3.2 RC.  The issue is when sending a raw file out to photoshop then at the conclusion of editing as the file arrives back to lightroom, it now keeps it original color label (yeah), but if I now attempt to change it's color label from one color to another that I use to denote a completed PSD file, the file losses it color label completely and ends up without a color label at all (similar to what use to happen in 3.0), and I have to go find it and relabel it again.
hopefully I explained that well enough to catch the fault that exists
    mike

I only have PSE8 and not Photoshop, but I cannot reproduce this behaviour by externally editing a Raw file in PSE8 from LR. When using PSE, you have to have LR render the PSD on the way to PSE already, which is a difference to Photoshop.
What technique are you using to assign the new color label when coming back from PS (keyboard shortcur, Metadata panel, ...)?
    I'm using LR3.2RC on WinXP SP3.

  • Firefox 3.6 color management incorrect on wide-gamut monitors?

    Hi,
I'm having a problem with sRGB JPEGs exported from Lightroom (2.7) that I don't actually think is LR's fault, but was wondering if anyone here has experienced this.
What I'm finding is that these sRGB JPEGs don't display correctly on my wide-gamut Dell 2408WFP monitor under Windows 7 in Firefox 3.6.9 or in the Windows image viewer. Now, this isn't the standard problem people used to complain about on wide-gamut monitors, where sRGB images came out looking oversaturated (pinkish) in FF because older versions of FF didn't do color management; the newer Firefox seems to be doing color management in general. The problem I'm seeing in my photos is that dark areas are becoming darker and losing detail, and midrange shadows are turning into a grayish green.
What's odd is that these JPEGs look fine in Safari on the same machine and the same monitor (and they also look fine if I load them into PS). That suggests to me that Firefox (and Windows) are doing something wrong, probably related to the fact that the monitor is wide-gamut.
    Has anyone encountered this problem?
    Thanks,
    nj

    Jim,
I think you are right in saying that it is a crap shoot. There are some interesting points in your post though.
The general public will be viewing with a monitor and browser that are not color managed. Won't my v4 images diplay fairly well under this situation (at least much better than with ff3.6 and a monitor with a v4 profile)?
That will work just fine indeed. It is arguable whether it will look "better". The variation between monitors is much larger than the benefit you gain from using v4. One thing that will work better is the out of sRGB gamut colors. You won't get the posterization using the v4 sRGB profile that you get with the v2 sRGB. For some images (think shots of flowers) that might be a major benefit. If all your colors are in sRGB that is obviously not a benefit at all. The big disadvantage of using v4 sRGB is that it adds quite a few extra kilobytes (about 60) to your image. For example, I just exported from Lightroom a simple web sized image at 1000 pixels long side at good quality and in v4 it was 262 kB, while in v2 sRGB it weighs in at only 209 kB. I see no real difference between these images on my wide-gamut monitor. This difference in filesize can be important and at smaller sizes is really going to matter.
What about a wide gamut monitor that's not color managed, running a browser that doesn't support v4?
The v4 sRGB image will look just as badly oversaturated as the normal sRGB one. Try it and you'll see. Perhaps slightly less oversaturated but the difference is very small in general. The one thing that you should realize of course is that if these users are running a non-managed browser on a wide gamut display, they are likely conditioned to oversaturated images and probably will never even notice. These users are lost anyway. It's best not to even try to target them. Target normal users who generally run unmanaged browsers on unmanaged sRGB-like displays. The variation between these displays is far larger than the slight advantage you get from using sRGB v4 and in my mind at least it is not worth the added size in the picture and the loss of color management in Firefox. Of course, you might have different priorities.
P.S. the numbers of users using unmanaged browsers are waning quite quickly if I am to believe my website's stats - IE is way down and both Safari and Firefox are up. Chrome (not managed) is coming up too but not as fast as IE is decreasing. Apparently (I haven't tried as I don't do windows) the latest IE does respect embedded color profiles, but alas it doesn't translate to the monitor profile. That is of course basically useless.

  • PDF creation causes rich black colors to shift

I'm designing a book cover. There are three main areas: front, back and spine. Each area has specified the default "black" color in the swatches panel. This color uses 100% K in the CMYK color space. In the preferences panel, under "appearance of black", I have checked to print and display blacks as rich black. Everthing looks great on the Indesign file. My blacks are as specified. Everything has been double-checked on the swatch panel to be set to this black color, which is a non-editable color (always remains 100% K on the CMYK setting). It has been displaying just fine on the file, as a rich black, no color shifting ever whatsoever until doing the following:
When I make a PDF using the "Export" window, I select PDF/x-1A as my printer specifies. I create the PDF, and open it, only to see that my blacks are being shifted to a shade of deep brownish black.
On the first few attempts, only two of the three areas specified above did this. ON the next attempts, all three areas look the same. This is weird. I'm very disappointed with the strange issues present in Indesign, as I am trained with Quarkxpress and find it to work flawlessly in comparison, especially with something like color output.
    What am I doing wrong?
When I change settings, for example, change the color management to "none" or leave it in the default for the PDFx/1-a, it doesn't make any difference in this glitch in the output.
    Help!
    Thanks.

The Appearance of Black setting to print all blacks as rich black ONLY affects printing or exporting to RGB devices (essentially printing to desktop printers or PRINTING to PDF with Composite RGB or Composite Grayscale selected). It has no effect at all on EXPORT to PDF.
    >I changed my 100%K only blacks to genuine rich blacks of 100%K 25%C 25%Y 25%M  and the problem is corrected.
You said this is a book cover. That implies that the output will be printed, not viewed on screen. For printed output it is ESSENTIAL that you set blacks to display accurately. You should also turn on Overprint Preview when judging color. You'll probably get away with your rich black in any type over 12 points or so where it might be applied, but it's generally not a great idea to use rich black for type in small sizes. Rich blacks also generally use slightly more cyan than yellow and magenta to compensate for ink impurities.
Do you have a high-end monitor? Is your monitor calibrated and profiled using a colorimeter? If not, you can forget what you see on screen. The odds that it is anywhere near accurate are similar to the odds of winning the lottery. Are you using the same color space in Acrobat as you are in ID? If you change the color space, the appearance of your colors will change.
When you export to PDF/X-1a you are converting everything to CMYK using a target color space. By default the conversion option is set to preserve numbers. If your imported art has an embedded profile that differs from the destination, that will be honored and color numbers will be changed to preserve the appearance of color, as much as possible taking into account different gamuts, and untagged imported art, along with native objects will all be presumed to be in the current working space in ID, and cmyk numbers for those objects will be preserved. If the destination space differs from the working space, thew appearance of these colors will shift, but 100% K native objects will continue to be 100% K in the PDF. A conversion to a destination that differs from the working space WITHOUT preserving numbers will result in 100% K being changed to a 4-color mix that mimics the appearance of 100% K output in the working space.
Knowing the destination space in advance is vital if you are doing a CMYK conversion. CMYK profiles are "device dependent" and CMYK-to-CMYK conversions are destructive, both in terms of potential loss of color (and you don't gain by going from a smaller to a larger gamut space) and conversion of solid colors to 4-color mixes which is particularly problematic for black type and thin rules.
