Loss of Edits in a non cross-platform InDesign/InCopy Workflow

I have read, and understand, the cross-platform issues related to loss of edits in InCopy. We are experiencing the same issue on an all Windows network.  Some authors have experienced the following issue:
Author checks out a story and edits the content
Author checks the story in
Later, the Author checks out the story , but the edited content is missing
Author becomes frustrated ;-)
The worst part of this issue is that it does not happen consistently, it is random.
We are running InDesign on Window-7 64 bit machines, InCopy on Windows XP 32 bit machines, and the file server is a Windows 2003 server.  Or workflow is designed so that only one author and the InDesign designer has access to the  assignment file (We create assignments by author instead of by section).
So my question is, has anyone else experieinced these problems? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yes, we are using InDesign, InCopy, Illustrator, and Photoshop CS5. We were very excited about having the ability to mix 8.5x11 and 11x17 pages for the proposal we are in the process of creating and decided to be early adopters.  I hope they get the bugs fixed soon....I am confident that they will.
Thanks!

  • Will cross platform app run on one platform?

    Hi there,
    please forgive my stupidity but if I have a J2ME app which contains one function calling functions from Blackberry library. Can this app be installed and run ok on non Blackberry phones, such as Nokia (suppose that Blackberry related code will not be called under this non-Blackberry phone), within Nokia emulator environment, or real Nokia phones?
    It would be much appreciated if someone could shed some light here so that my time and effort to try it out could be saved.
    Many thanks in advance,
    qmei from London

    Here, let me actually be helpfull...
    It depends on the phone.
    To be able to use the exact same app in multiple devices, when some are calling device specific code is possible, but it really does depend on a few factors...
    1) You must not ever reference or instantiate any classes that import the device specific libraries. If any such classes are referenced directly in your application, the offending class will be loaded into memory, at which point the device's VM will notice that it's trying to reference a library that it doesn't recognize, and likely crash out.
    2) You must only load such offending classes by name, and even then, there must only reference offending classes through an interface. So if you have a canvas class that imports nokia libraries, as well as other canvas classes that import other manufacturer libraries, you must make them all implement the same interface, and do something like this...
    try{
    Class cls = Class.forName("com.nokia.mid.ui.FullCanvas");
    cls = Class.forName("NokiaGameScreen");
    Object o = (cls.newInstance());
    gameScreen = (GameScreen)o;
    gameScreen.init(this);
    }catch(Exception e){
    //cant' use nokia!
    //try another manufacturer...
    }... so I'll explain in greater detail...
    1) Class cls = Class.forName("com.nokia.mid.ui.FullCanvas");This line with throw an exception if no class matches the supplied argument. Generally you'd do something like this to check for the existance of one of the classes you intend to import. If this line does not throw an Exception, than instantiating the desired display should be fine. In this case, if we don't throws an Exception, we can be sure that we are running on a Nokia device.
    2) cls = Class.forName("NokiaGameScreen");This line actually grabbs the class you intend to instantiate, which contains the offending import. Only when we reach this point does the VM load the class into memory, and validate it's imports. We have already determined that we are running on a Nokia device from the previous line.
    3) Object o = (cls.newInstance()); Get an instance of the desired class.
    4) gameScreen = (GameScreen)o;gameScreen is of the type 'GameScreen', which is an interface I defined and is implemented by all of my different manufacturer/device specific Canvas's.
    5) gameScreen.init(this);I am simply calling the 'public void init(Midlet)' function I created that is exposed through my 'GameScreen' interface.
    As you can see in the above example, I never directly reference the 'NokiaGameScreen' class, and instead indirectly reference it through an interface it's implementing called 'GameScreen'.
    This type of 'cross platform' coding works well on many, but not all devices. It's a headache, but some devices go through the entire .jar file and validate each and every .class file during the installation process. These annoying phones will cancel the install if they find any imports that are not recognized. So even if the class is simply accidentally left in the .jar, with no possible way to ever load or instantiate it, the device may decide it won't let you run or install.
    Because of the problem devices, I always create a separate build for each manufacturer, and exclude the other manufacturer's classes from the build entirely.

  • PDF with special characters (é, ñ) needs to be legible cross-platform(mac & pc)

    I am using Illustrator to design a PDF. Because it's in Spanish, accent marks and other special characters are needed (á, ñ).
    When I export the PDF from the ai file and view it on my mac it looks fine. However, when I open it on a pc some of the special characters are completely missing.
    I tried Creating Outlines with the text, although it will make it harder to update in the future and so less preferable to leaving the text editable. Creating Outlines works fine on the mac, however on the pc the L's appear thicker than they actually are.
    Does anyone know how to make special characters legible cross-platform when creating a PDF using Illustrator?
    Thanks!!

    Does anyone know how to make special characters legible cross-platform when creating a PDF using Illustrator?
    Yes. You use a correct OpenType font that has the glyphs in the place where they belong and can be embedded without limitations. Older TrueType or PostScript fonts are simply unsuitable as are fonts that cannot be emebdded and require to be installed locally. It all comes down to system language settings vs. the unified environment inside acrobat. This also requires any PDF to be created on systems with the language settings correct in the first place, i.e. creating Spanish text with a Japanese version of AI would be pretty desastrous due to how foreign language fonts are accessed... check these things and then try again. If possible, enforce embedding of the full font in the PDF settings, not just a subset and choose a suitable font.

  • What's a good cross-platform choice?

    Hey,
    I use LE and GB, but I would like to have any suggestions about a good cross-platform program that I could use to do some collaborations with a friend who is stuck with a Windows-based system for now.
    Anyone?

    If you want a DAW that is cross platform, you have the choice between Cubase, ProTools and Live. Cubase is probably the most Logic-like but considering the full-of-bugs reputation it has, I'd stay away from it. ProTools is great but you'll need dedicated hardware. That left us with the last but not the least: Live. Altough people think this is a loopy, djing kind-of-software, it's a pretty good DAW by itself, even if you're working in a more traditionnal, linear way. I used to do the bulk of my composition work with Logic and do the audio edition with ProTools. Now, the more I use Live, the more I don't use the other two anymore. And believe me, even if that asks you to think differently at the beginning, it gets very addictive!

  • No Pre-CS4 cross-platform upgrades anymore?

    I bought CS3.3 Web Premium for Windows 2 1/2 months ago. Before I purchased I confirmed with Adobe Customer Service that I can exchange it to the Mac version for free.
    This week I finally purchased a Mac and called Adobe to get the Mac version, and was told that my only option would be to upgrade to CS4 Mac (for $$$) and that they no longer sell / send out version 3.3.
    Can this be for real? I just bought it 2 1/2 months ago and they are no longer honoring their free cross-platform upgrade policy. It's hard to imagine that they don't have 3.3 in stock any more. It's not like I am requesting a CS2 Win to CS2 Mac upgrade. I just spend a lot of money, and now they want me to spend even more money...
    Any ideas? Anybody at Adobe reading this?
    Greg

    Now that makes sense. I'm beginning to thing that the techs and sales people at Adobe don't really know anything. I spoke to three, and none of them even hinted at that possibility.
    I also spoke to someone at Apple who said that their software couldn't damage the Mac's hardware, as well. It's hard to believe they'd keep it on the market without warnings, recalls or disclaimers, knowing it could do that much damage.
    Sure leaves a bad taste in my mouth about Adobe. Maybe it's time for me to look at other software.
    Thanks,
    Michele

  • Cross-platform upgrade?

    No, cross-platform swapping is only supported for the latest release CS version which is now CS6.

  • Cross platform issues with InDesign CS5 or earlier

    Potential client would like me (designer on a Mac) to design print docs which they can then edit on their PCs. Would love to hear feedback from others about any cross-platform issues/best practices suggestions. Thanks!

    No problem at all, the only thing you have to do is make sure you both have the same fonts in a flavour (Opentype) that you can both read.  So when you send them a Indesign document using these fonts they should be able to open it up on a PC without getting a "missing fonts" warning.  Once you've got that sorted you're away, I do exactly this all the time.
    Oh and of course you must have the same version of Indesign!  You can save back one version (or from CS5.5 to CS4) but it's not recommended for this type of workflow.

  • DW CS3 cross-platform check in/out file locking

    Here is my setup:
    * Apple X-Serve file server (as a mapped drive on several
    Windows XPsp2
    machines and a shared drive on one Mac 10.4)
    * Up-to-date Dreamweaver CS3 on every machine (3 windows, 1
    mac)
    * Enable file check in and check out (site preference for all
    installations)
    * Contribute compatibility (site preference for all
    installations)
    The problem is that when a file is checked in on the mac, the
    file becomes
    locked such that the windows machines can't check out the
    file. All of the
    windows machines check out and check in files with no problem
    if the mac hasn't
    touched them. Once the mac has checked in a file, I have to
    "unlock" the file
    via the right-click context menu on the file. (This unlock is
    called "Turn off
    Read Only" on the windows version.)
    Windows FTP Log on check out after mac check in:
    /.../public_html/help/faq.php - locked
    /.../public_html/help/faq.php - error occurred - An FTP error
    occurred -
    cannot get faq.php.
    /.../public_html/help/faq.php - unlocked
    Apparently the Mac DW CS3 version of "Check in" and the
    Windows DW CS3 version
    of "Check in" are different and incompatible. Has anyone else
    had this problem
    or know of a solution? Removing the Mac is not an option.
    This may or may not be related, but whenever a file is opened
    on the operating
    system other than last edited (mac opens windows edited file
    or windows opens
    mac edited file), the "Overwrite local copy" dialog shows up
    when checking out
    a file. When a compare is made of the server/local files,
    there are no changes.
    Both mac and windows have the same line ending settings in
    the preferences.

    I'm having exactly the same issue. Has anyone experienced
    this before, and if so have a solution?
    Thanks in advance!

    In your Site definition, you need to specify the Remote Info
    of your
    server, and then "Enable file checkin and checkout".

  • Cross platform pdf CD-rom with hyperlinks

    Hi there, I am suffering with some cross platform impatience.
    Trying to make a cd-rom...the structure is from a root folder-containing an html file which is opened then select links to open particular PDF documents (that all works fine)
    In the PDF document there are hyperlinks to other PDf docs, word docs, zip files and powerpoiunt files. They all work perfectly on the PC but no links working from the mac.
    Mac is running OS X 10.5.
    I have created the links by using the advanced editing options, then add custonm link and add file. Then i select the appropraite file.
    I did do it on an older version mac to test too (running mac OS X 10.4.10) and all the linking files worked except for the zip files - which try open a web browser. Thats ok though but then i put the cd-rom in the newer mac and nothing is linking (like dead links)
    Thanks for any help - this is an urgent job i have to get out. So speedy replies will be GREATLY appreciated.

  • Cross-platform upgrade question

    I'm posting this question here as I have had less than satisfactory results from asking Customer Support about this issue. I know this forum is moderated by some great folks at Adobe and am hoping someone can clear up this question for me.
    I currently own CS3 Design Premium for Windows, and need to purchase CS5 for Mac. A search for "Cross platform swap" on Adobe brought me to this page: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405819.html. However, the instructions there don't match what is offered on the support page. Under Return/Exchange/Refund I have only the following options:
    Duplicate Order
    Product Didn't perform/ work as expected
    Purchased Incorrect upgrade
    Purchased Wrong Product/Platform/Language
    Shipping Problems
    Unable to Download Order
    Wrong Product delivered
    None of those options is correct as described in the KB article. I decided to chat with Customer Support, and the rep told me that all I had to do is order the upgrade and I could choose which platform to install on first run. Really? The Rep said CS5 included two discs, one for Windows install and one for OS X. He assured me that I would have no problem installing a CS5 upgrade on my Mac, even though I have never installed CS3 on that machine.
    I am skeptical about this solution for two reasons: one, Adobe has never offered Win and Mac discs together for CS versions. Two, when I go to pre-order CS5 I need to make a choice between platforms.
    Has Adobe changed its method of delivering Creative Suite products? Are both platform discs really included? If not, there are two things that need to be done:
    Article http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405819.html needs to be corrected. The steps as described cannot be completed.
    Customer Support reps need to be notified that they are providing incorrect information regarding cross-platform upgrade procedures.
    Finally, I need correct information as to how to go about upgrading my CS3 Windows to CS5 Mac. Do I purchase an upgrade disc and use my CS3 serial number to install? Do I do some sort of return, and if so, how?
    Thanks in advance to anyone from Adobe who is willing to take the time to answer my question.

    I don't represent Adobe in any capacity other than a mostly satisfied user. Here's what I did on a cross platform (Windows to Mac) exchange--not an upgrade, but my experience may help you.
    I, too, found that the directions didn't match the support web site.  So I used 'Purchased wrong...' as my subject.  I then completely described what I wanted to do in the comments section.  I included my current platform version and serial number in the comments. After posting I had a case number to enter onto the Letter of Destruction (LOD) which I then attached to the case. I don't know if a LOD is required in your situation as you will be paying for an upgrade.  You should be able to keep both packages active-but customer support will probably know.  In my case I had to certify that I had destroyed the original Windows package.
    After this was posted to the Adobe Customer Support Portal I then had a case number I could give to the telephone customer support so I called them.  While on the line with them they read my case file and informed me my credit card would be charged $5.95 for shipping.  Six days later I had the CS4 Design Premium for the Mac.  It *should* be just as easy for you.
    I must say that I have had to call Adobe Customer Support a handful of times in the last couple of years.  In each and every case I received prompt and accurate information that solved my problem or pointed me directly to the solution.  I am aware that this is not always the case and wish you good luck.

  • Cross platform upgrade question between Photoshop CS5/CS6 and multiple Windows/Mac computers

    Hello,
    I'm currently using a Windows laptop and PC running Photoshop CS5 from a Student license I got in college. I am considering moving to an Apple laptop so I was looking at the cross platform update question on the forum that led me here: Order product | Platform, language swap
    It's not really clear if I will be eligible for the upgrade, and Adobe support chat sent me to the forum, and that page sends me back to where I started to see if I am eligible. I would prefer to purchase the upgrade outright, rather than pay for the new monthly subscription model.
    If I am eligible for a swap/upgrade to Apple CS6, will I still be able to use CS5 on my Windows PC?
    Thanks.

    I don't have a definitive answer, but I have a feeling that a student teacher version is not eligible for an upgrade discount.  You own the CS5 perpetual license, and can install it on two computers at the same time as CS6, CC etc.  That will be the case in perpetuity.  (not sure why I didn't just type 'forever' back there, or alert the cliche police 'Going forward')
    Photoshop CS6 Extended will cost you just shy of US$1600 according to this Amazon page  The non extended version does not give you the 3D tools, and Photoshop CC comes as the full extended version as standard.  If you got the Photoshop / Lightroom Photography plan at a mere $10 a month, the price of CS6 would keep you subscribed for > three years.  Photoshop CC has a lot of wonderful features CS6 does not have, and will never have, and CC will be be constantly updated 'in perpetuity'. ;-)  $10 a month!  Heck, what's not to like about that?!!!

  • Re: Java Media Framework cross platform installation / setup on Mac / UNIX

    JMF cross-platform doesn't support everything that the native performance pack versions support. I found this out the hard way too because pure Java JMF can't play AVI's from my digital camera but the Win32 enhanced JMF can. In particular, with my case pure Java JMF doesn't support all the frame rates that the others do.
    I know Apple has been releasing some of the other APIs lately, like JAI. We might want to check over at apple.com and see if they have a native JMF impl.

    Hi,

  • Cross platform migrate repository and oms, gets "EM Key Verification Error"

    Hello,
    I am trying to cross platform migrate repository and oms from Sun Solaris Sparc 64 bit to Linux x86-64bit.
    Environment:
    Original repository Oracle 10.2.0.3, OMS 10.2.0.5, Sun Solaris Sparc 64 bit
    New repositoy Oracle 10.2.0.3, OMS 10.2.0.5, Linux x86-64bit
    Following metalink note:
    Subject: How To Move Grid Control Oms & Repository To Another Server
    Doc ID: 853293.1
    to step 4:
    4. Point the new OMS to the new repository
    can't get over emkey corrupt issue, gets error:

    The newly installed additional OMS can only point to the original repository and can't point to the newly migrated repository.
    Steps I did:
    Install an addition OMS to point to original repository (make sure emkey is in repository)
    create a new empty database on new host with a new name (is new name caused problem?)
    migrate old repository to new (use export/import)
    point new OMS to new repository by modifing emoms.properties
    startup oms and gets emkey corrupt error
    This metalink note does not help either:
    Subject: The Em Key is not configured properly. Run "emctl status emkey" for more details.
    Doc ID: 817035.1
    I also have a SR open but still have no help from Oracle support. I did make sure the emkey is in the repository before migrate. There may be tricks that I don't know.
    Can anyone shed some light on this?
    Thank you for your help in advance.

    Hi, I'm having the same issue.
    Our original installation was on Windows 32bit with the repository and OMS on the same host. I want to move the repository to a linux 64bit host to make more resource available for everything. The new database is 11.1.0.7 though. As the Grid control release is 10.2.0.5 Oracle Support have confirmed that the 11g database is OK to use.
    In the log I see a lot of this:
    [AJPRequestHandler-ApplicationServerThread-5] ERROR conn.ConnectionService verifyRepositoryEx.911 - Invalid Connection Pool. ERROR = ORA-01031: insufficient privileges

    java.sql.SQLException: EM Key is Missing
    Unfortunately that package is wrapped so I can't see what privs are required.
    The instructions say (simplified here) either datapump or exp/imp to the new database, run some admin scripts, then update the emoms.properties with the new connection information. Thats it - start OMS again and it should work.
    Thankfully I can turn the old repository back on while I sift through these logs.
