Loss of keyboard

Hi!
I have been experiencing something quite annoying on my MBP. I sometimes loose the keyboard. I have to put the machine back to sleep and wake it back up to get the keyboard back (pressing the CAPS-LOCK key does not even raise the green led when the keyboard is "gone"). I usually keep the keyboard for a few minutes, then it goes again. I ended up rebooting (something I am not used to do... I only reboot for mandatory updates that require this.... this rebooting business is something I left a long time ago behind me when I gave up on windows....).
So... Has anybody seen this behavior ? What can I do to mitigate?
BTW,
1) this never happened on Tiger (same machine).
2) my wife has experienced this once on her macbook (leopard updated too).
Any pointer is greatly appreciated.

I posted this same response to a different topic, and one other user responded that they also had success by reinstalling Quicktime 7.3:
I've been having a similar problem for the past couple days with my MacBook Pro. My keyboard would intermittently freeze up. I'd keep hitting keys until it started responding again and then I'd continue what I was doing. I also noticed that my computer no longer asked for a password when waking up from sleep.
Last night, I remembered that I had installed the iTunes 7.5 and QuickTime 7.3 updates about the same time I started having this problem. I downloaded QuickTime 7.3 from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ , and since I reinstalled QuickTime, I haven't had any problems with my keyboard.

  • Loss of keyboard focus in Java appl running under linux

    I have a small sample program that replicates my problem. When this program is run a window is created. If you select File->New another instance of the program window is created. Now if you try to go back and bring to front the first window, keyboard focus is not
    transferred when run under linux. You can only type in the second window. The expected behavior does happen in Windows.

    You can implement the FocusListener interface. When
    the first JFrame gains focus, call
    text.requestFocusInWindow(). I hope this helps.The call requestFocusInWindow is not helping, perhaps even making it worse.
    The problem seems to be that I am in the situation where the call
    KeyboardFocusManager.getCurrentKeyboardFocusManager().getPermanentFocusOwner()
    is returning the expected Component. The problem is that the KeyListener class that is registered with the Component is not being called when a key is being pressed.
    The issue is that I have a component that has the keyboard focus, but the KeyListener class
    is not responding.
    This seems to be a linux only problem which makes it only mysterious.

  • 10.6.2 update beach ball and loss of keyboard/mouse usage

    I recently installed 10.6.2 update on my 15" mbp. I'm using the newest non-unibody mbp.
    After that, I've had a few seperate occasions where the OS will just lock up and the beach ball would start spinning. After that, my trackpad and my keyboard would not respond, and the caps lock light on the keyboard does not light up. The only possible way of getting out of it is to force shutdown my MacBook pro using the power button.
    When it reboots I find a file called something like fsevent-uuid in my trash. Can anyone help?
    I've tried to trigger this but have not been successful so far.

    Did you update via Software Update or did you download the Combo? If you used Software Update, consider getting the Combo updater instead and then re-apply:

  • Loss of keyboard shortcuts CC 2014

    I'm in the middle of a day of work and suddenly I've lost the ability to zoom using the CMD-Spacebar keys.  And the hand tool no longer appears when I use the Spacebar key.  This has happened in the past, and I would just click out of Photoshop and return to it and the shortcuts would sometimes return.  This time that didn't work.  Tossing the preferences also didn't work. The keyboard is fine. I'm on an iMac 27" 32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 OS 10.9.5.

    This is undoubtedly a bug. I'm not sure if it's in Photoshop or the Mac OS, but I've had it now in several versions of Photoshop and in different machines.  Suddenly the tool can't be changed, either by clicking on a new tool, or using the letter for the tool.  Sometimes clicking out of the program will reset Photoshop, but mostly you have to re-boot Photoshop, which can be a problem if you really don't want to.  Once I had to reboot the computer. Hopefully they will find this, admit it's a problem and deal with it . . .

  • [Workaround] Mouse freeze / loss of keyboard- check which logs

    I've been having an issue with my mouse freezing which is followed by the keyboard not responding. The mouse will freeze but I can usually still use the keyboard until I try and switch to TTY2, with the plan of pkilling Xorg. I have to reboot the machine by pressing the power button to get out of it.
    I've checked journalctl, Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old and nothing stands out, although I'll admit I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Is there somewhere else to check?

    Asus motherboard
    Intel Core2 6400 CPU
    Nvidia GT7300 GPU with nouvea driver
    PS/2 keyboard - I've checked the i8042 and the controller is being detected.
    USB optical mouse

    In the posts that I could find, the solution was usually a kernel upgrade. I was hoping that the upgrade to kernel 3.14 would solve the issue, but it has not. I also tried downgrading to 3.12.9 but still had random freezes.
    The workaround, which has not had a freeze in weeks, was to use a USB to PS/2 mouse adapter. I have not had any problems using a USB keyboard, since last month, when trying to rule out the i8042: PS/2 Controller being a problem.

    Can someone please help. I have to hard reboot every time since I normal shutdown gets hung and this is happening every boot.
    The last time I tried moving the mouse from one usb port to another. The mouse wouldn't connect and the I got this:

  • Sudden loss of Keyboard support on Bootcamp in WIndows

    I have noticed problems creeping into Windows operation in Bootcamp since I installed XP SP3. I attempted to create a new user account and found that the Apple Keyboard support driver would not install ... so went back to my old account where the keyboard was working just fine -and discovered the same thing. No Keyboard when in Windows. I use the standard white Keyboard supplied with my iMac. Odd thing is that it works when I open the the partition using Parrallels. Same OS access through Bootcamp no more Keyboard (it has worked for over 3 years now) - in Parrallels it still works????
    I have tried loading drivers from Leopard disc and even resorted to the older set I created when setting up Bootcamp the first time a few years back ... but no luck. Any help from out there would be great.

    I have a 2006 MacBook Pro 17" (2.16 GHz Core Duo) with 10.5.6 and BootCamp 2.1 installed.
    I like to run in "clamshell" mode (connected to my 30" Apple Cinema HD Display) with the aluminum "Chiclets" keyboard attached directly to the monitor along with a Microsoft Optical Mouse as well.
    If I boot directly into Windows XP SP3 I get no keyboard response at all from either the built-in keyboard or the aluminum keyboard attached to the Cinema Display.
    I can get the mouse to work (Microsoft mouse) but the Trackpad does not work.
    Both mouse and aluminum keyboard work in VMware Fusion 2.0.1. That is the only way I can run Windows XP SP3 on the machine right now. I cannot use Boot Camp to run it on the raw metal as it currently stands because of this keyboard/Trackpad problem. This *****!

  • Multi-tab operation: viewing PDF causes loss of keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Tab

    When operating with tabs and one tab is viewing a PDF file, trying to toggle to another tab with the Ctrl+Tab shortcut works going TO the PDF tabbed page, but not AWAY from the PDF tabbed page. I must use the pointer device to actually select a non-PDF tabbed page.

    Known problem in Firefox where a Plugin "grabs focus" when the Plugin is using a Tab. More noticeable with Flash than with the Adobe PDF Plugin.
    The developers are working on fixing that issue in the Firefox 4.0 betas, so that problem might be fixed when Firefox 4.0 is released next month.
    For the time being, you are going to have to restore "focus" by clicking somewhere in the browser window.

  • Lossing keyboard connection repeatedly with Mac

    Heads up; If you keep lossing a keyboard connection, try replacing your rechargeable batteries. The System Preferences said the batteries were at 100% but the wireless connection would be lost and reconnecting every 30 seconds or so.

  • Can't find Keyboard Viewer

    Hi,
    I can't figure out how to make a simple copyright symbol. I looked and looked for the Keyboard Viewer in the Preferences>International, but couldn't find it, or anything like it.
    I just want something like Key Caps.

    I have not experienced a loss of keyboard Viewer myself, but the following link to the subject by Giorgio Piras, may allow you to recover it.
    Missing character palette or keyboard viewer
    The path given applies to 10.3 as well, so it may work for you too.
    The behaviour of "Show Input mode palette" seems normal. That is what is does on my machine as well, which as you have noticed does not do anything. It seems to be merely an alternative to going to the menu bar if you have more than one language to choose to run.

  • Installing Airport Extreme 802.11n card in eMac killed keyboard?

    I got an Airport Extreme 802.11n base station and card for my eMac (which I want to run in the next room from my new Mac Pro) from local Apple Store yesterday.
    I read and followed the card installation instructions exactly. - This included installing the software from the CD.* - But as soon as I installed the card, my mouse and keyboard lost contact with the eMac. (Totally unresponsive to key commands or mouse movement.)
    I shut down my eMac and my (new) Philips DSL modem: both of these have shown no symptoms up to the time of the card installation. I un-installed the card and waited 5-minutes. Modem and eMac came back normally and so did my keyboard and mouse.
    Just prior to installation, I ran DiskWarrior and Repair Permissions. Also: I unplugged and "re-plugged" the USB keyboard and mouse before shutting down of eMac & modem - this made no difference.
    * I did notice: The documentation for the base station says the eMac needs Airport Setup Assistant 5.2. The eMac has Airport Setup Assistant 4.2. Yet - when I ran the installation program, it recognized and reported as updated Airport Setup Assistant 4.2.
    Anyone have a solution to my loss of keyboard and mouse with card installed? Please - the Mac Pro arrives tomorrow.

    I'm answering my own question:
    I got around to simply trying a second time to install the Airport Extreme card in this eMac. This time - I shut it down before starting installation of the card.
    I suspected that shutting down would be a good idea - since it seems very likely that the System needs to load whatever drivers or extensions are needed to enable Airport. But the instruction either did not mention shutting down before installing the card or I missed mention of it in my haste to complete this and numerous other tasks before day's end.
    Anyway - that seems to be what happened because bootup was normal and the mouse cursor and keyboard worked as soon as the desktop appeared.
    Now - I proceed to setup the base station and test it on the eMac. If all goes as I hope - in 36 hours I'll have both this old eMac and the new Mac Pro living happily in their separate rooms.

  • Keyboard input lost on desktop actions

    If I change the name of a file on the desktop, I find that often this can result in complete loss of keyboard input as far as file names are concerned – i.e., it becomes impossible to change file names, name new files or make any keyboard input whatsoever. This can happen almost at once, or after an indeterminate number of file names have been changed; there seems to be no pattern or logic to the phenomenon. Suggestions?

    I am having a hard time finding any common thread to this event. The last time it occurred, last night, I was running the following applications:

    APE extensions: Don't think any; I don't recognise the term.
    Attachments: Printer (Epson Pro 3800), Scanner (Microtek i800), external hard drive, USB modem. However, I had these attachments even before the problem cropped up.
    Finally, I have also run repairs and permissions corrections from Disk Utility without discovering any problems.

  • Default keyboard spacebar (number - letter) behaviour not correct within Safari

    IIRC, the correct behaviour for the default keyboard is as follows:
    if you are typing numbers, and you type the spacebar key, the keyboard should switch back to letters. This works correctly everywhere, except when typing in the Safari URL bar.
    note: if you type inside a page in safari, like in google search on the google webpage, the behaviour is correct. It's only seems to be incorrect/different in the URL bar.
    any thoughts?

  • How do I install windows 7 to mid-2010 iMac?

    Have a 21.5" iMac with 10.6.8 OS, intel 3.2 GHz mid-2010 model with wireless keyboard and magic mouse.  Would like to install Windows 7 either boot camp or with Parallel 7, which ever works.  Any advice appreciated.  Step by step directions would be welcome.  Somewhat spooked by discussions I have read about black screens and loss of keyboard and mouse use.  

    I have the exact requirement of szl180: installing Windows 7 to a mid-2010 iMac. Only, I did successfully install it under VMWare (so I know the Windows disk is fine) and now want to install a Bootcamp version. Followed Bootcamp procedure only after installing everything and then rebooting Windows 7 shows the four-colored Windows logo and then dies - screen stays black, optical disk stop rotating, and nothing. Attempted to repair it using Windows 7 repair but it says nothing is wrong. Can't use System Restore because it never had an initial restore point. Starting from the DVD and reinstalling just brings me to the same point again though along the way Windows Installer notes that an old edition of Windows is on the drive and will be put into a windows.old file. What do I need to do to "breakthrough" and get the Windows desktop to display?

  • Sporadic crashes/kernel panics after switching to new mac

    Hey everyone I'm really hoping that someone here can help me with a problem I've been having
    In late December I accidentally water damaged my 2011 13' MacBook Pro, resulting in loss of keyboard function, however the computer was still workable. And I made do until the beginning  of March when I bought a second hand 2012 13' 2.5GHz MacBook Pro. 
    I put the ram and harddrive from my old MacBook into the new one, and everything worked fine....for the first 5  days
    However I began to experience crashes(kernel panics?) where any number of things would happen...
    Most commonly the computer would freeze,  briefly followed by an immediate reboot, followed by a error message saying something like "your computer restarted because of a problem"(after logging in)
    It also presents as the computer freezing, with the sudden appearance of scattered purple/blue lines, and I am forced to hard reset. This is followed by the same error message as before.
    I have also encountered problems with the computer not responding after being put to sleep(however this may have been fixed when I reset the SMC, hasn't happened for a while).
    Does anyone have any suggestions as to things I could check or possible causes of this? Cause I have no clue.....
    These problems have happened under all sorts of different conditions different,  work loads, ect.
    I Also can't find anything difinitive in the console in regarded to any specific crash, and there's nothing consistent between them.
    Things I have done:
    -Reset PRAM/NVRAM
    -Reset SMC
    -Repaired disk permissions
    -Ran apple diagnostics
    -Stress tested processor using "yes" command
    -Tested ram with memtest
    Any thought you have would be greatly appreciated!
