Loss of names when moving photos from one library to another

I created a new library and moved some photos to it but they no longer have the Faces information with them. Is it possible to move that information as well of am I doomed to have to re-name every person in the photos?

How did you move them? The only way to move files between libraries and maintain all metadata is with iPhoto Library Manager

  • Moving photos from one library to another (v7.1.5)

Hi. I'm currently using iPhoto 7.1.5. I had my iPhoto library on an external drive. I experienced problems with that drive and had to purchase a new one. In the meantime, I uploaded new photos to iPhoto in a library that resides on my internal hard drive. I've since successfully copied the photos from the bad external drive to a new external drive. Now I need to move the photos that are in the Library on my computer to the Library on the new external disk. I want to have all my photos in one place and I want the Library on the external disk to essentially be the only library. I will then create a back up of that onto another external disk so I don't lose anything.
I have very limited internal disk space and have about 8,000 photos that I need to move.
    Thank you in advance.

File -> Export to the FInder, then import them to the other Library.
If you want to preserve versions and metadata etc then you'll need to use  iPhoto Library Manager

  • How do I move photos from one library to another?

I have moved my 34gig iphoto library from my MBP to an external drive. I have now created a second library on the MBP with the intention of keeping just a smaller selection of my photos in this ready to edit.
Is there an easy way of importing photos from the old library on the external drive to the new one? Do they link up in any way, or, will I need to export a selection from the old library to a new folder on the desktop and then import from there?

To move all the versions, metadata and photos from one Library to another use iPhoto Library Manager.
Exporting from one and then importing to another will not get all the metadata (Faces, for instance) nor will it get the versions.
Another way to achieve what you seem to want to do:
    1. Quit iPhoto.
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the external drive.
Now you have two full copies of the Library. To choose between them: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
    3. On the Internal Library, remove the pics you don't want with you all the time.
Now you have one full library on the external and another smaller sub-set on the Internal.
    A couple of comments:
    a. The external disk needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
b: When you're removing the unwanted pics from the Internal Library you need to delete them in batches of about 100 or so. Trashing more at one time can cause problems with the database.

how do I transfer photos from one library to another?

Best way is using the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -
you can export form one library and import into the other one but this does not get all metadata or versions

  • I need to move 1000 photos from one library to another. How do I do that and keep the ratings and dates they were created?

I need to move 1000 photos from one library to another. How do I do that and keep the ratings and dates they were created? I tried exporting them, but it loses all info. Also, how do I move the quicktime movies from one iphoto library to another? They were exported as jpgs

Add both libraries to iPhoto Library Manager.  Then select the events or albums that you want to copy from library A  and drag them to library B in iPLM.
    This video shows the process:

  • Moving photos from one project to another

So, I'm painfully new to aperture but I was under the impression that if I drag and drop a group of photos from one project to another, it would MOVE the photos to the new project (as described here: http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=5%26sec tion=14%26tasks=true). When I do this, the images remain in the original project and it does get added to the second project (in an album under the new project). When I try to delete them from the original project, it also deletes them from both the original project and the new album in the new project. When I "Undo" the delete, it restores the photos to both the original project and the album under the new project.
    Am I missing something?

The problem is you are dragging them into an Album not a project.
If you drag them into the project they will be moved. If you drag into an Album they remain in the original project as well as appearing the album. (in the album they are really pointers back to the originals in the project)

  • Moving Photos from One Event to Another

I don't entirely understand how to do this. When I want to move photos from one event to another, I usually just drag the photos from one event to another. This works fine when the two events are next to each other (within the same window). However, it he event is not in the same window (requiring a scroll up or down) then the drag and drop can't happen (i.e., having to drag photos from my last event to the first event). Any suggestions here?

If you're merging two Events you ca do this in Event View - just drag one Event to the Other and they will be merged.
If you're moving pics from an Event to another (but not a Full Merge):
Photos View, the go View -> Event Titles and option Click on the wee triangle to close all the Events.
Then open the Event you want to get the Files From. Select the Files.
Drag them to the bottom of the iPhoto Window - above the toolbar - and the Window will scroll. (There's a bit of a knack to doing this: there's a sweet spot just above the tool bar. Get the Cursor there and the window will scroll. With practise you can even control the rate and speed of scrolling)
Drop them on the target Event.

  • Moving images from one library to another; or how to have 2 libraries open at the same time in Aperture 2

This may be something easy but for some reason I am having a hard time figuring this out. Basically this is the situation: I have a library on my MBP hd that I import pictures to when I am not hooked up to my external hd for the time being. The main library is of course on the external 2tb drive. How do I have 2 libraries open so that I can essentially drag and drop the pictures from one library to another? It would basically be like moving files from one project to another. Thanks for any help!

Always keep a backup of your original images, before you delete them. I make a backup right form the card, before I even import them to Aperture.
How are your images stored right now? Are the referenced or managed? On your big volume I'd consolidate the newly imported images, to be sure they are really inside the Aperture library before I delete any images outside the library.
but they have the little yellow triangle caution symbol on them and I can see them but not really edit them
That is a very typical problem, when you imported your images as referenced images then somehow delete or move the original master image files, that are stored outside the Aperture library.
Do you still have the original masters of the images with the yellow triangle that you cannot edit? In Aperture 3 you can point Aperture to the location of the master image file "File >Locate referenced image" - probably Aperture 2 has a similar command to let you reconnect your masters, if you still have them. Look into the manual.

  • How to move photos from one library to another?

    Hi,
I currently have 2 libraries and I want to move photos from one library into the other.
How do I have to proceed?
    Thx
    A

We're thinking of adding a library copy feature soon.  Hoping you can share some info here to help us understand how this might best work fo you.   Here's a few questions I have:
    - What do you use the 2 libraries for?
      - Why do you want to copy?
      - Do you have albums, favorites, and comments associated with the photos?  Do you want them copied?
Anything else that you are hoping to accomplish here?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Move Photos from one Library to another

How can I move pictures from one library to another in Iphoto 11 ?

    1. Export from one, import to the other. Though you will not get all the versions if you do this. You also need to be sure to sue the options in the Expor dialogue to write all the metadata to the files or that won't come over. Note there is no way to export Faces data.
    2. Use iPhoto Library Manager to move the files and all versions and all metadata - including Faces - between libraries. However this hasn't been fully updated for iPhoto 11 so you'll need to wait a few days.

  • Using iPad 2 photos and have not found key to organizing or moving photos  from one album to another existing album

With ipad2 I have been almost successful in moving photos from the stream or roll to separate albums. It takes the commands but does not allow last step. What am I missing?

If you are wanting to copy photos from your computer to the iPad then you need to select all the folders that you want to copy together in one go - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are removed by not including them in the next photo sync, so on each photo sync you need to select all the photos that you want to remain on the iPad. So you will only do one photo sync to copy them.
So when you connect the iPad to your computer and select it on the left-hand sidebar of your computer's iTunes, on the right-hand side on the Photos tab you need to select the parent folder under each those 100 folders are directly under - each of those 100 folders will then get their own album on the iPad. The folder to album relationship only works to 1 level i.e. if those folders have sub-folders in them then their photos will go into the parent's album on the iPad

  • Getting error Can't read from the source or disk when moving documents from one folder to another folder in the library

    Hi,
When we try to move documents from one folder to another folder in the document library using "Open with explorer" getting beloe error.

Read,Limited access---> givin through The group grp
Could you please help me anyone....
    Thanks

    Hi Reddy,
If you are moving files in two libraries in different sites, then the error will occur and it is by design that there are limitations on the DAV move commands that the DAV client is respecting.

If you are moving files in the same library, I recommend you to use Wireshark to reveal the error message and enable IIS
Trace Logging for Failed Requests to examine the IIS log file for troubleshooting.

To narrow down the issue scope, I recommend you to test with another library and see if the copy in explorer can work.
    Best regards.

  • How do you move photos from one library to another in iPhoto 9.4.3

I have half 2009 photos in one library and the other half in a different library.  I'd like to move several photos to one of the libraries to make a photo book.  How do I do this?

    use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -
Otherwise you can move the image and selected metadate by exporting form one library and importing into th eother
FWIW it is almost always better to have a single iPhoto library with all of your photos in it

  • Problem moving photos from one comp to another in LR 4

I am having a problem with moving my photos from a MacBook Pro to a PC laptop.  All the files reside in one directory on an external drive.  I copied the catalog from the Mac to the PC, connected the drive, started LR and pointed to the copied catalog.  As expected, LR did not know where the files from the external drive were, so I highlighted the drive, right clicked the photo directory and told it to find missing files.  I then pointed it to the proper directory on the drive.  It only partially worked.  Several of the subdirectories on the drive did not relink.  If I take the drive off the PC and put it back on the Mac, the subdirectories are properly linked, where on the PC, some aren't.
I can reimport, but then I have to do edits all over again on those photos.  Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

Are you sure that in the Mac to PC conversion of the actual folders, that perhaps some of the names folder didn't change?
Can you compare the exact name of one of these folders on both computers?
What happens if you try to right-click on the problem folders in Lightroom and select Find Missing Folder and then point just that specific folder in Lightroom to the proper folder on your PC?

  • Moving photos from one account to another

    Hello.
I have just set up a separate user account for my little girl. Is is possible to transfer photos from my photo library in iPhoto into hers? I've tried copying some pictures to my shared file but when I tried to import them into her iPhoto it said the files weren't recognised.
Will I have to put them on a CD instead?
    Thank you for any advice.
    Rachel

Locate the photo library in the Finder, and then open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder. Enter the following:
    chmod -R 777
followed by a space. Drag the folder into the Terminal window, press Enter, and then quit the Terminal. Next, use the insructions in this article to move the entire iPhoto library to the /Users/Shared/ folder, followed by doing the same thing from her account.
Alternatively, try these instructions if you haven't already to export the photos to the /Users/Shared/ folder, and then reimport them on her account.
A third option is to use this application to create a second library with only the photos you want her to have, and then transfer it to her account using the instructions posted above.
