Loss of photos in iphoto 6

hello all,
I have read around but can't see anything directly relevant, so apologies if this has been answered before.
I opened iphoto 6, which crashed almost immediately, resulting in the photo library corrupting. Since this has happened (many times) before, I had a copy, so (after copying that) I renamed the file and opened iphoto again. This seemed fine, until I began importing pictures, when the thumbnails showed only empty spaces where some of the new photos should be. It then became stuck, so I had to 'Forced quit', and when I restarted my computer and opened it again, all the photos were gone. Now, even if I replace the library6iphoto with an old version claiming to have 100mB or so of content, when I open iphoto, I get a dialogue box saying I have to update the thumbnails. No matter whether I press the '`later' or the upgrade now caption, the upgrade takes 1 second, as i seem to have no photos in the file.
I have various library6.iphoto copies, but every time I have tried to open them, the files have reduced to 4kb in content and no pictures are there.
Any ideas?

LN
Thanks for the quick reply, but as yet no joy.
I have the iphoto library folder, - shows about 12.5 GB. Inside is the library6.iPhoto database file (claiming to have 4mb content) and various copies I made as backup - which claim around 100 mb of content. The photos - modified and original - all seem to be there. Previously, I was told in a shop to fix this problem by removing the corrupt library6 file and renaming a previously made copy. This has usually worked fine. Not, however, this time, as all this does is reduce the renamed copy to 4 mb.
I tried "depressing the option (alt) key and use the select library option to be sure you are pointing at the library that we just verified had your photos" but no photos materialised! I then "launched iPhoto while depressing the option and command (apple) keys - selecting the first three options of the rebuild library dialogue" but still no photos appeared.
I have downloaded the iphotolibrary manager, but it just crashes every time I open it, so haven't been able to do much with that. I have around 5GB of memory available - could this be the problem?
Rather more worryingly, I then tried to create a whole new library from scratch, reloading selected photos from a disk. They seemed to load fine - all the thumbnails flashed through as it imported and so on, but when it came to actually seeing the library, heaps of the pictures were merely blank dotted squares. More of them had disappeared when I restarted my computer - from about 500 there are only some 3 left now. When I check the original photos in this new iphotolibrary folder, they cannot be opened there either. So, I checked the photos were okay on the CD - they are. Yet, when I uploaded them to the computer merely into a desktop folder, several seem to be corrupted or a file format that preview doesn't recognize.
I have a complete back up of my iphoto library folder on an external disk, but am rather worried about trying to reload from that incase I have something more sinister happening with my mac, since when i restarted a moment ago, my dock 'lost' various files...nothing really was gone, so it was easy to put the icons back, but I am wondering if I have a wider problem.
Sorry if this all seems garbled nonsense!

  • Loss of photos in iPhoto

I will give you the background story. I have been working on an iMovie, which I then finished with iDVD. My superdrive is non functional due to an "accident" by my children. So, I went to a local Apple Reseller. We tried several things, including putting my Mac on the network, turning my Mac into a Firewire drive. But we kept having problems. We were trying to use a new Mac Book Pro, 15 in. We ended up just plugging up an external DVD burner, which worked great. I was finally done after all the work. I then shut down my Mac, and dive home. I turn back on the Mac, open iPhoto, and NO photos!! I tried all of the mentioned things, loading iPhoto in different ways, rebuilding, and deleting the .pls file...nothing. I have over 6500 photos. I have found the photos in a directory, and have tried to import them but keep getting the error message: "Unreadable files" The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data) But, I can open the files in preview with no problems, and they are .jpg files. I was able to drop and drag about 40 photos, but that is all. Please help!! Thanks

    Hi there,
If all else fails, you can try this...
Open a photo you know that you CANNOT import into iPhoto in Preview, if it opens successfully, do a "Save As", save to any folder (or dektop) you wish, rename it, and make sure you save as a jpeg or tiff. Also save at highest "quality" in jpeg. Afterwards, drag newly renamed and saved image into iPhoto and see if that helps it import... if it does you can do the same things to all the others. The problem maybe the name, some kind of change to the orginal image or structure that iPhoto cannot interpret.
    Good luck, Rick

  • Drag and drop imported photos in iPhoto '09 causes duplication of old existing photos and loss if new photos

    Good Afternoon All,
I'd be grateful for any help with the following problem.
After importing about 30 photos from my camera into iPhoto '09 (version 8.1.2), I selected the first group of 10 and dragged and dropped them into an existing album in my iPhoto library.        I repeated this process with another  group of photos , dropping them into a different existing album. Again, I repeated this process with the last remaining photos from the original imported group of 30.
This is exactly the same process I have used successfully on many previous occasions when adding to my iPhoto library of 6000+ photos.
However when I later opened each of the 3 existing albums to check on the 30 new photos none of these new photos were visible.     Instead each of the three albums now contained between 5 and 15 duplicates of old photos from different and unrelated albums in addition to their normal content.       These duplicates were not present before I imported the 30 new photos.    I then opened every Album in my entire library of 6000+ photos  without finding any sign of the 30 new photos.   These 30 photos have also disappeared from "Last Import" which now shows a blank page with 0 imports.
I still have the 30 new photos saved on my camera and could import them again. My concern is that with my very limited diagnostic skills re. my iMac OS X (10.6.8) I may aggravate the problem
    Thank you

    Morning Terence
Thank you for your suggestion. When I held the Option Key and opened iPhoto the resulting menu showed 2 libraries , "iPhoto Library" and "iPhoto Library (default )".
I then recalled that 12 months ago I had created this duplicate library when attempting to recover some lost photos.    On opening each of these two libraries in turn, I notice that they are not identical.  Rather than create another new library, I imported some new photos into "iPhoto Library "  and was then able to drag and drop successfully into this library.    When I tried to do the same with "iPhoto Library (default )"  all the problems originally described re-occured.
Having found the problem is in the Default library I would now like to move some photos from it into "iPhoto Library" and then remove the Default Library.
Could you recommend how best to do this or is it not a good idea?
    Regards.....Gilvin

  • Can't drag and drop or copy multiple photos from iPhoto 9.4.2

I am trying to export multiple edited (not originals) photo files from iPhoto to finder (actually to place in my Dropbox folder to share with friends/family). This used to be (in previous versions of iPhoto?) an easy case of dragging and dropping a selection of photos, or even a whole event, to the desired location in Finder. However, this no longer seems to work. It seems like it will as when you select and drag the photos, the 'green plus' symbol appears and remains when I move to drop the selection into finder, but then nothing happens. The photos dont transfer.
I can still drag and drop a SINGLE photo effectively and it saves in the edited form. I also tried selecting the desired photos, chosing copy and then paste in the desired location in finder. But when I chose 'paste' (right click, paste; or edit, paste) in the desired location, it only pastes a limited selection of the photos which I chose to copy. Not all the photos copy across.
I cant understand why this is no longer possible as it used to be one of the classic examples of intuitive file actions that I love Apple for. The only way I can find now is to chose to export the selection or event (file, export) but this is much less easy and requires various decisions about the file quality etc. Using this option with various compression options, I have not been able to replicated the "original" file size which is displayed under 'info' for each photo in iPhoto.
    Any ideas please?
    Tom

Thanks LarryHN thats helpful. I've just tried that and the export 'current' option does indeed re-create the edited photo file with exactly the same file size at that shown in iPhoto. I did consider the 'current' option but was put off by the loss of the metadata with this option. But maybe the old drag and drop approach was the same?
It's curious that the resulting file size from 'export, current' is different (larger in the example I just tried) in comparison to that resulting from 'export, jpeg' (with either the medium or high option selected).
OK there seems to be a couple of reasonable options available although neither is as nice as the simple 'drag and drop' which used to be available!!! Why would they remove that option?? (and yet not for single files?).
    Thanks
    Tom

  • Problems saving Videos and Photos on IPHOTO (IMAC)

This is about the fourth time I've had my camera spazz out. This afternoon I downloaded my camera roll (little over 300 photos) to iPhoto and deleted the originals.  Then discovered my new photos were not being saved.  When I go into my camera roll to review there are just white squares.
It's extremely aggravating but I just restored and set up my Cannon Camara.
Y can t losse this material=. It' s extremely important for me. Work Stuff !!!

Wow. You post once at 4:19pm and then again one minute later wondering if the forum works? It's a forum not a chat room.
    Here's some tips:
Patience. The people who repsond here are all volunteers giving of their time for nothing. Courtesy helps too.
Clarity: "spazz out" is not a term I recognise. Can you explain it - ideally not using slang terms. You get more help when people can understand what you're saying.
Ignore irrelevant information. How you feel about it is of no interest.

  • How can I Copy/backup photos in iphoto to external drives smaller than iPhoto library

How can I Copy/backup photos in iphoto to external drives smaller than iPhoto library?  I have several 128 GB SSD's that I want to use to copy/backup all my iPhoto photographs for a permanent archive due to stability...but my iPhoto library is larger than the drives (about 234 GB) so it would require two of the SSD's...how best to get the original photos onto the SSD's?  I'm running Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6...thx.

Terrence - Can you explain what you mean by data loss?  In the iPhoto Library?  Or on the copy?
Larry - In what way is each photo "degraded"?  Quality?  Isn't it simply making an an exact copy, in this case a jpeg, as would happen if I dragged and dropped a different file type?  Is there another type of degradation?
I am working on trying to create a correct backup as well (per your instructions) but I wanted to use this as a "put in a fireproof safe" archive on very small SSD's that would never have a mechanical hard drive problem (we've lost a couple over time so aren't real confident in their staying power)...I also recognize that I I won't have newer photos in this archive group but at least it would have 98% of our photos in another off-site location...at least that's the thought...
Thx for your input and look forward to more in your reply...

  • I want to move my photos from iPhoto to Time Capsule to make space on my computer.  What's the best means of doing this?

I want to move my photos from iPhoto to Time Capsule to make space on my computer.  What's the best means of doing this?

    Please do not do this.
The Time Capsule was designed for your backups.....not as an everyday hard drive. Access to the Time Capsule is slow.
If there is any loss of connection between iPhoto and the iPhoto library when you are reading or writing, the entire iPhoto library is easily corrupted.
The chances of corruption are even more likely if you are using wireless on the computer.
And....even if you decide to risk this....if you move your "original" iPhoto library to the Time Capsule.....how will you make backups of the library?
The only copy of the library will be on the Time Capsule....you have no backups.....when, not if, the Time Capsule has a problem.
Simply stated, I would never do this with any important data that you cannot afford to lose. Please post in the iPhoto support area if you need to confirm this.

If you do want an idea of how to move your iPhoto library correctly, post back and we can help.

  • Archive photos in iPhoto

Easiest way to Archive photos in iPhoto. With tads included.
One idea is to export the photos as the smallest version possible, and save the full size ones on DVD

    Brian:
It's like the old saying, penny wise, pound foolish. When you replace the full sized files is a reduced file size version, and pixel size if that's what you intend, all you're doing is limiting your options to use those photos.
As Terence suggested an external FW hard drive can server two important functions: 1 - house your full sized library (and iTunes library if desired); 2 - serve as a backup for other important files. The cost of external FW hard drives are at a point that they are very cost effective insurance against loss of important files. With your library(s) off the boot drive, the system and applications will function more effectively since they will have plenty of space for virtual memory, cache and swap files.
If you're going to replace your original files with reduced size (and quality) do as Terence suggested and use the Share->Burn menu option. That will produce a disk that iPhoto can mount and view and keep your keywords, titles and comments intact. If you need a photo back as a full sized file for printing then you cancopy photos, rolls or albums back to the working library as needed. (Note: although the screenshot is for V7 it will be the same for V6.)
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • ITunes not syncing photos from iPhoto

"Unkown error" messages are becoming usual for iPod users that we are ignoring them because our iPods are syncing fine anyway. Except for error message -208, the new kid on the block! This error message only pops when trying to sync photos from iPhoto (6.0.5 the latest! Syncing photos from any other folder or not syncing photos at all, does not cause any problem. The syncing never has given me this problem (and I have been syncing iPods with pics for a long time!)
How does Apple answer to this problem? Don't blame the iTunes software, because this is definitively a joint problem you guys have with your software not talking to one another.
I have rebuilt everything that can be rebuilt in iPhoto (thumbnails, library), I have downloaded and installed all the latest updates. Reset and restored the iPod... done! Reinstall iTunes, check!
I have posted messages at the iTunes/iPod forum and... no response! Hope the Apple staff is more friendly here... or at least one of the seasoned users...

You may have figured it out by now. None of the resetting of the iPod or the rebuilding of the iPhoto library (command+option) or permission rebuilding works to solve a -208 error when the error refers to an iPhoto library sync with iTunes. Supposedly, this error occurs with corrupt AIFF files as well. This error will occur on different iPods which try to sync to the same iPhoto library. The iPhoto library is definitely corrupted. Mine was due to a sudden power loss.
NOTE: I do not "Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when adding to library" under Advanced iPhoto preferences, so that my photos don't have a chance of getting messed up (like error -208s). If you do, the steps below may be different for you. Always a good idea to back up your photos.
Here is how I fixed it. All the steps may not be necessary. Go to /pictures directory under your user (or wherever your iPhoto library is located), and rename the "iPhoto Library" or whatever you called it to something else, like "iPhoto Library 2". Open iPhoto, and it can't find the library, and asks if you want to find it or create a new one. Tell it to create a new one, and put at least a picture in the library. Sync with iPod, which should work without error and put the picture on your iPod. Close iTunes. Close iPhoto. Now, to save all your pictures (thumbnails) already in the iPhoto library, copy everything BUT "iPod Photo Cache" folder, which seems to be the culprit, from the "iPhoto Library 2" folder into the "iPhoto Library" folder. Open iPhoto, and all your pictures should now be in the library. Open iTunes and sync iPod, and all your pictures should sync out without error.

  • Cannot email photos from iPhoto after upgrade to 10.8

After upgrading to 10.8, I have not been able to successfully eamil photos from iPhoto. I can select the photos, click the email icon, and have Mail open with the photos attached (as expected). But the send button is grayed out, and the newly created message window cannot be closed. To get rid of the unsendable email, I have to quit or force shut down Mail, then reopen Mail and manually delete the email from Drafts.
Has anyone else run into this issue?

As Larry suggested go into iPhoto's Accounts preference pane and make sure your email account information is correct. If you joined iCloud that is a must.

  • Can't view photos in iphoto but I still can in Preview

Recently I changed some of the folder names of my photos in the iphoto library, but now when I want to view them in iphoto they are blank. I can still view them through Preview mode if I go through Finder, but that's a hassle. Also, the photos that I didn't change the folder name I can still view in iPhoto. I use iPhoto 5.
What should I do in order to get things back to normal and be able to view my photos in iphoto??

    i Brian
Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
1 - this is the iPhoto '08 forum - your question would be better placed in the iPhoto 5 forum - http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=850 - some things work differently and here people will assume that you have iPhoto '08 and the answers may not work on iPhoto 5
What should I do in order to get things back to normal and be able to view my photos in iphoto??
2 - You should NEVER modify the iPhoto library (or any other database structure for that matter) - you should ONLY use iPhoto to change things. At this time your two choices are to put things back exactly like they were or recreate your library which will lose your edits, albums, etc

  • Cannot send photos from iPhoto

    This is driving me nuts!
I am on a MacBook Pro running Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5.1. I am using Yahoo as my primary mail. When I try to send photos using iPhoto, I get the common message "The email server didn't recognize your user / Password combination". I know for sure that the username and password are correct, and sending regular email works fine.
I've tried activating iCloud mail and trying that, but then I get a message that the outgoing mail server timed out.
I've tried all the suggestions I've been able to find in other threads to no avail, although the other threads about this subject seem to focus more on Gmail.
Anybody else using this setup and successfully sending?
    Thanks,
    Glen

Use this for your SMPTE outgoing mail server in the settings of the iCloud account:
    smtp.mail.me.com
After doing this, switch to the iPhoto as your mail preference (instead of Mail) in the general screen, and test it out.
This fixed my issues after I kept getting an error with the server when email photos from iPhoto.  Once I manually added the correct outgoing server to iPhoto for my iCloud account, it worked fine.

How can I get all photos from iPhoto to automatically back up to iCloud from my Mac OSX Version 10.6.8 operating system.  Not enough memory to upgrade.

You can't.  iCloud is not for general file backup from a Mac. It's for backup up and syncing data between mobile devices and and Macs and  The following is from this Apple document: iCloud: Backup and restore overview.
iCloud automatically backs up the most important data on your (mobile) device using iOS 5 or later. Once you have enabled Backup on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch .....
    What is backed up
You get unlimited free storage for:
Purchased music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books
Notes: Backup of purchased music is not available in all countries. Backups of purchased movies and TV shows are U.S. only. Previous purchases may not be restored if they are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore.
Some previously purchased movies may not be available in iTunes in the Cloud. These movies will indicate that they are not available in iTunes in the Cloud on their product details page in the iTunes Store. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they have been refunded or are no longer available in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore.
You get 5 GB of free iCloud storage for:
Photos and videos in the Camera Roll
Device settings (for example: Phone Favorites, Wallpaper, and Mail, Contacts, Calendar accounts)
    App data
    Home screen and app organization
    Messages (iMessage, SMS, and MMS)
    Ringtones
    Visual Voicemails
But not from a Mac.  If you want to backup your photos and other important files I suggest you get an external hard drive and use  it with Time Machine.
