Loss of preferences on startup

I have a 1 year old iBook with 35G available in the HD. I rarely turn off my laptop, I just let it sleep. However when I do turn it off, when it starts up I lose all my Mail Preferences, browser homepages and bookmarks. I don't lose any data just the settings. Any ideas? Thanks
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

seaseansean,
Have you tried to do your normal maintenance like verify disk?
Find your OS X Tiger disk, insert in iBook, restart
When you have the chimes hold down the C key and let it boot from the CD
In the Installer choose File/Disk Utility
Run Verify Disk and see if the Disk is having issues. If so then run Disk Repair and then reboot

  • Why does Windows 7 not show up in System Preference's "Startup Disk"

Why does Windows 7, installed via Boot Camp, show up when you hold down the option key when booting but the drive does not show up in System Preferences under the Startup Disk icon.
As an aside Windows 7 runs perfectly on my MacBook.
    - Mike

Now I found I'm not alone. My situation is similar but not exactly the same.
I recently switched from the white MacBook to latest mac mini, tried installing XP Pro not successful for some reasons then tried Win7 (build 7000). On my old macbook this worked perfectly.
Got win7 updated and picked win7 as startup disk in windows, used that for few days without going back to leopard. On just one occasion I booted with 'alt' key pressed (using a PC keyboard) I have choices of drives so I thought everything was fine. As soon as I booted into leopard I found no win7 partition in system>preference>startup disk, OMG I couldn't boot back to win7 since then. From that point onwards the 'alt' key didn't work for me. Every time only leopard can be booted.
    What can I do now?
Why it was OK in macbook but didn't work on mini? Is it worth investing on a mac external keyboard just to get the 'option' key?

  • Picking up user preferences upon startup

I made a change to my main user account home directory, and short name. All things are in sync, but my user preferences aren't being picked up. If I make a change to the preferences, they will stay in effect until next startup. I'm guessing the old user name, or folder name is stored somewhere, and needs to be changed to point to the new name.
Anyone know if this is accurate, and if so, where is this stored?

I had switched the Command & Control keys via the Modifier Keys dialog in System Preferences. I had switched them back to their normal default behavior just prior to making the username change. However, the Command & Control are flipped each time I restart the Mac, which requires resetting them via the Modifier Keys dialog in System Preferences.
That may be enough to answer your question, but in case it isn't, the following is background info:
I come from the PC world, and still need to work on PC's, so I have been remapping the Mac to make "flipping" back and forth between machines more reasonable. The original approach I used was similar to the one detailed at http://blog.mvballtech.com/2008/04/fixing-up-mac-key-bindings-for-windows.html
This approach makes use of switching the switching the Control and Command keys via Keyboard System Preferences. The only hitch, for me, comes when trying to learn Final Cut Studio where there is so much use of keyboard shortcuts. Having the Control and Command keys switched works, but having to be mindful when reading in the tutorials to use the Control key to think it's Command key in my case (or vice versa) distracts from what I'm trying to learn. Anyway, I chose a different approach to remap the keys, which requires defining more key-action pairs in DefaultKeyBinding.dict file.
I switched the Modifier Keys (Command & Control) back their defaults, modified DefaultKeyBinding.dict.
Again, to restate - the Command & Control keys worked as normal when I made the change, but whenever I restart the Mac, the Command & Control are flipped, requiring them to be reset.
This is the only thing I have seen to be an issue, to date, but is a bit of a nuisance, and indicates something isn't quite right.

  • Upgrade results in loss of preferences and Update Centre paths

I have just upgraded to EA7. Having started to use SqlDev in earnest I had changed some preference settings. So I checked the ReadMe and was disappointed to find that it's still not possible to export preferences, What the document didn't say, but ought to, is that any links we've put in the Update Centre will also get lost. This is annoying. I hadn't bookmarked the extension sites because I thought the Update Centre was tracking them
I must admit to being a bit bemused as to why we can export connections but not other kinds of configuration data. Doesn't this annoy you guys too?
    Cheers, APC

It is very annoying, but it also is not a production product yet. Since development is still occurring on it, I would assume that the structure of the configuration files are still changing.
The big question is once SQL Developer is production, will they retain preference settings during upgrades? One issue I have is I cannot get the "check for upgrade" to work through my firewall. So will the upgrade guidelines document what configuration files to retain to keep your preferences when doing a fresh install?
Please do not rely on everyone using the upgrade center for upgrades.

  • User Preferences on Startup

I had a request from one of my users and I'm not sure if it can be done. It does not appear to be a preference available via GUI, but I thought I would ask here to see if there was another way.
Is it possible to have TNS pre-selected as the default connection type when a user instantiates a new connection?
    Thanks!

If there would be preferences at this level, they would get completely unmanageable, think about it (they're pretty clogged now already).
Nevertheless, it might be useful to get this by default (whenever tnsnames entries were found). You can request this at the SQL Developer Exchange, where others can vote to add weight for future implementation.

    K.

  • Lost settings and preferences on startup

I had a very unusual problem this AM. On computer start up all my FF settings, preferences, tool bar settings, homepage were lost and FF reverted back to it's default settings. My bookmarks were still there. I've never seen that before. I did a system restart and still the same thing. So I had to reset all the settings and preferences. Nothing odd with my IE9 browser. I did a security sweep and everything was normal. Anybody seen this before?

Hey there, do you also still have your history, cookies and passwords intact? If yes, this sounds like someone activated Firefox Reset on that computer. In any case, you should be able to find your old profile on your computer still as Firefox reset just creates a copy and leaves the old profile as it is. You can use this article to locate your profile, and it also links to the profile manager to switch profiles: [[Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data]]

  • Must tweak preferences on startup to get sound. Why?

When I start up my Mac Pro I can't get any sound. First I must open the system preference and set the sound output preference. Then there is no problem getting sound until I next boot up the computer, when the same problem reoccurs. Is there a way to fix this? It is a bother!

What is it exactly in the Sound preference pane that you need to set/change?
And when you do reboot, has the setting changed to what you had it set to when it was working fine?

  • Trash preferences at startup? Alert or not?

I've had to trash my preferences for Illustrator recently and used the Cmd-Opt-Shift-Ctrl method.
I've been a little confused that there wasn't any alert confirming that I wanted to trash the prefs.
Can someone confirm that Illustrator DOESN'T give this alert dialog when trashing the prefs?

This is what I see when I press the same keys as InDesign starts up. And it's been like this since the first version.
So you're saying Illustrator doesn't have this?

  • When Firefox starts it opens a page other than what I set Preferences - General - Startup to do.

When I have logged on to Ubuntu as "Bob" Firefox shows www.bob.com at startup. When I have logged on to Ubuntu as "Another" Firefox shows www.another.com. "Show my windows and tabs from last time" works but the www.bob.com shows in an additional tab. Home page is not changed. "Show my home page" works ok too but the www.bob.com shows in an additional tab.

Check the command line of the shortcut to see if that has a correct setting.
    I have this command: /usr/lib/firefox/firefox %u
You can try to remove any additional switches and commands and only leave the path to Firefox.

  • I am using the Beta and when I crash it used to bring my websites back now it doesn't, is there a way to change my preferences or enable me to get them back?

I also have trouble with a meter showing how close I am to opening. I notice the circle a the top but it doesn't do me much good when trying to analyze how close I am to opening the file.

You can check the startup setting:
*[http://kb.mozillazine.org/Menu_differences Firefox > Preferences] > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"
If that didn't help then there may be a problem with the file [http://kb.mozillazine.org/sessionstore.js sessionstore.js] and sessionstore.bak in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder]
Delete the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak and any existing files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js to prevent Firefox from restoring a previous session.

  • How to select OS X startup disk after booting up in 8.6

I recently purchased an old iBook G3 (original clamshell model) to run some old Mac games I had laying around (was in a nostalgic mood I guess). It came with OS 8.6 and I installed an old copy of OS X 10.2 Jaguar onto it. It wouldn't let me run in the "Classic" environment, as it has OS 8.6, not OS 9.x. I found I was able to launch the computer from 8.6 by selecting the 8.6 start up disk, and thought I could try running some of my really old Mac apps. Long story short, once I booted up in 8.6 I've been unable to figure out how to boot back up in 10.2. It's been over 10 years since I last used anything older than Mac OS X, and I don't remember where everything is, and how to change the startup disk back to 10.2.
If anyone knows, please help. I'd really like to avoid doing a complete system restore if possible.

    Two ways:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the desired disk icon from which you want to boot.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
    Use Startup Disk Preferences:
Open Startup Disk prefs from System Preferences.
Select the volume from which you want to start.
    Click on the Restart button.
    Click on Restart again.

  • Startup problems

My Powerbook G4 was running fine with no problems. Suddenly now when I go to turn it on, it will either be hung up on the grey screen with the spinning sprocket or it will stay on that screen for a minute or two and then eventually complete the startup process.
I've done the following, not in this order
    1) run diskwarrior
    2) repaired permissions
    3) run Cocktail (clean caches, run cron scripts, update prebinding)
    4) run disk utility and repaired harddrive
    5) reset pmu and pram
And I'm still having the problem.
I've included the lengthly system log, as I thought that might be of help and I don't really understand how to read it.
    Any help would be appreciated.

arnie's idea to create a new user account is a good troubleshooting measure, and a good place to start. If that doesn't resolve things, read on . . .
When I ran diskwarrior it had 899 link files had creation date that was repaired root creation date was repaired critical values in the volume infomraiton were repaired
Obviously something corrupted a portion of your directory structure. This could be either software or hardware related. If things remain stable, it would suggest that the issue was software related; if things go bad again, it may well be because the HD hardware itself has issues, and repair utilities cannot repair hardware.
The disk utility harddrive repair, did find a problem and repaired it and yes, I ran it again twice with an all clear.
Was this before or after DW? Hopefully before, because DW is a much stronger utility, so it would make sense that it found/repaired things that DU did not/could not, but if it was after, then I suspect a new issue appeared between the time you ran DW and then DU, in which case something is continuing to cause HD issues (and unless you've changed something software/OS related recently, my guess would be HD hardware).
I've not trashed anything that I didn't create that I know of.
Good. If issues continue, and money is more important than time, you may want to (after creating and testing a backup of your data) erase and zero your HD and reinstall a fresh OS. This will involve quite a bit of time/effort, but it will tell you if the issues are hardware or were software related; if they were software, you should be good to go with the fresh OS install, but if they were hardware, the issues will likely continue, at which point you'll need to buy a new HD anyway and repeat the entire OS/app/data installation process.
Not to complicate matters further, but if you're able to successfully clone (Carbon Copy Cloner) your HD to another HD, the process is much simpler; you simply clone everything back onto your PB HD with a few clicks in CCC.
How can I turn off VPC and Windowshade? In System preferences/Accounts/Startup Items there are just two items, icalalarmscheduler and itunes helper . . . I'm not sure where to turn these others off at
I haven't used VPC for a very long time, but if, as it appears in the log, it is causing issues, and you haven't manually started it, then something is telling it to start. Maybe this is controlled from within VPC itself?
One other question: you haven't used Norton Utilities on your HD, have you?

  • My systems preferences are not saved from each previous session! Mark

Each time I start up my new iMac computer, the system preferences I set up in my previous session are lost! Can anybody help me figure out what I need to do to make my preferences persist?

Usually a loss of preferences after reboot or logout is attributed to user permission issues.
First reboot your system then try this:
    1. Open a Finder window.
    2. Choose "Go" from your top menu bar.
    3. Choose "Home"
    4. Choose "File from your menu bar.
    5. Choose "Get info"
    6. Open the "Sharing & Permissions section using the disclosure arrow.
    7. Unlock the padlock in the corner with your password.
    8. Click the little gear button.
    9. Choose "Apply to enclosed items"
    10. Once process is done set your preferences and attempt a restart of the system.

  • MacBook Pro Startup Manual Boot Neccicary

I'm having some problems when I start up my Mac. If I dont manually select the boot partition (using alt/option) the startup screen stays grey for about 30 seconds, and then the text appears: No bootable disk found. Insert boot disc and press any key to boot"

    Hi,
boot into OSX using the alt/option key.
Once in OSX go to System Preferences then Startup Volume and set your OSX to be the default.
On the next reboot your Mac should boot into OSX with 'help' ;-)
Btw. that error sounds to me like you tried to use the BootCamp Assistant to install Windows, right ?

When I start up my computer, an iMac G4, it always shows first, in the Finder window, the application ToastLite window, prompting me to insert a CD for copying music or data. I don't know how this happened; I must have asked for it at some point, but I do not want it to show up forever. I don't really know how to make my question clearer, but I hope someone can help me with a solution. I have looked at Preferences both in ToastLite Roxio, in System Preferences, in Startup Preferences, but have been unable to remove this annoying event. Help, please, someone?

    Good news, thanks!
How could one remember all this?
To remember all the little things, you just have to forget all the big/important things in your life!
