Loss of resolution when using color

I have been sending my project to color and when it arrives in color it is noticeably softer and when it returns to FCP and is put next to original clip it does not have the same resolution. I am sending it using the AJA Kona LH 720p 23fr 8 bit codec and not changing the settings in color. If I take all the original clips and make 10 bit movies of them and put them on a timeline they go over and back with the same resolution, however if I try to export 10bit from the timeline I still get soft images. Is there something I am missing in this process? Also the color is vastly different between FCP and Color so I am always guessing what it will look like when it gets back to FCP I am using a Panasonic BT LH1700wp High defintion monitor. Thanks for your help.

Always a challenge to start approaching a situation like this that appears to have some global problems -- ie, its probably not the application, because it works for so many other users in a completely predictable manner, so ... we're left with guesswork.
I'm not sure if I understand that the AJA Kona LH 720p 23fr 8 bit format is a "codec" per se. Is it DVCProHD or not? Or are you actually trying to send some form of RGB?
Seems like something is happening when 10-bit is exported that COLOR seems to have less of a problem with. When you export 10 bit... is that Uncompressed? Is there any "scaling" going on? Even if its in the background, ie 720 up to 1080, not recommended, especially if there is an anamorphic conversion going on.
If there is a vast color difference, then using an external grading solution doesn't appear to be the right choice in this instance. In effect, its a direct violation of 'do no harm'... guesswork is not acceptable. I don't know what a BT LH1700wp is, what it looks like, or how its fed, or what its calibrated to, or what its doing internally... If you are also monitoring the FCP output with the same path and the picture being fed to it still reproduces differently, (even eliminating possible internal FCP settings which may not be working in High Precision), there is not much to go on here...
Keep stabbing away...

  • Random Window Closing When Using Color Labels

    Any help appreciated.
When using color labels, every 2nd or 3rd time I set a color, the finder window I'm working in closes by itself. When I reopen a new window, it puts you back at the top level, and I have to re-drill down to where I was. This happens whether or not any apps are open.
Using OS 10.4.8, pretty sure it's the latest version. I have almost no software on this machine - it's a dedicated music computer. I use labels extensively, and this never happened on my old G5 or Powerbook (both with 10.4.8). So far I'm attributing it to the Mac Pro.

    Mac Pro/2x2.66 Dual-Core   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   4GB RAM

Create a new account, name it "test" and see how color labels work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

  • Newbie Problem, White edges when using colors?

Hi, I am new to illustrator, and this problem has been bothering me forever. I have googled beyond belief, but no answer. Maybe I am using the wrong terminology? Not sure. But overall, when I create things in illustrator, and use color, there are white edges around everything. Example below.
Also the colors I choose don't seem to be the ones that show up. Like, for the example above, I chose a deeper purple, but a lighter purple came out. I guess illustrator is A LOT different than photoshop.

well, i recently had something like that too.
I just couldnt figure out why it was showing up.
Untill i began looking at the layers.
It seemed that somehow some layers got duplicated and stuff.
So i recommend that you have a look at your layers and check for unwanted duplicates.

  • Has anyone experienced the loss of audio when using Apple TV when it has been working fine?

I can't get any audio through my reciever when using Apple TV. It's been working fine until a week ago. I've check my reciever, unplug the TV, and Apple TV as described but nothing. I switch to my Direct TV input and I can get audio when not using ATV. I've tried most everything I've read on blogs but nothing. One of those "pull your hair out" issues. Any direction would be appreciated. Thanks, Vince

    Hi there Vfall!
I have some information for you that can help you troubleshoot this issue:
If you can see video but can't hear sound
If Apple TV is connected to a receiver, make sure the receiver is turned on.
Make sure the input setting you've selected on your receiver matches the input you have your audio cables connected to. See the documentation that came with your receiver for more information.
Make sure the volume on your TV or receiver is turned up and isn't muted.
Check whether you can hear sound while playing video only. Also, check whether you can hear audio feedback while clicking through menu options.
If you're connected to the HDMI port on your TV and Apple TV, make sure your TV supports audio through its HDMI port. The HDMI ports on some older TVs support only video.
If you are using HDMI audio, try disconnecting and reconnecting the HDMI cable.
If you're connected to the HDMI port on your TV and Apple TV, make sure your TV is setup to receive audio from HDMI. For some TV's this is automatic, but for others there is a choice between digital and analog (for HDMI audio, choose digital). Read more about HDMI audio.
Try the other audio outputs on Apple TV to see if they work.
If possible, try using different audio cables.

  • HDMI to DVI adapter not allowing full resolution when using Mac OS but does with Windows 8.1

I have a Mac Mini and using the HDMI to DVI cable that came with the computer the maximum resolution it will allow is 1280 x 1024. I have 2 of the same monitors. The other is connected with DisplayPort to VGA adapater and displays full resolution (1920 x 1080) on both monitors but the HDMI to DIV will only show 1280 x 1024.  I thought maybe it was my DVI cable or the adapter but when I boot up in Windows 8.1 through bootcamp both monitors display at full 1920 x 1080 resolution. Why does Windows give me the option for full resolution on both but the Mac OS doesn't? All the latest updates have been installed. I've contacted support and all the things they had me do didnt work. I see all these posts with people complaining about the same resolution issues. Is it that difficult for this to work?

Humm... the dual Samsung 21.5" monitor setup on my 2010 Mac Mini running Mavericks works a expected. One is on the HDMI to DVI adapter and the other in on a Kanex Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter.
Try > Display Menu from the Mac App Store and see if you can select 1920 x 1080 for both monitors using it.
Addtitionally, are you sure that it the HDMI to DVI monitor that is not getting the correct resolution...? Most people are complaining that it is a VGA connected monitor that is not getting the correct resolution.
If it turns out to be VGA connected monitor, then try using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter and DVI cable for that monitor instead of VGA.

  • How do I maintain print quality resolution when using both Lightroom and Photoshop?

I usually edit only in LIghtroom, but in this recent photoshoot, the woman's skirt lining was peeking out and I need to photoshop it out.  When I try to do this and save it in Photoshop, the file size drops dramatically and I'm guessing the picture quality.  I also tried to right-click on the picture in Lightroom and choose "Edit in" photoshop, but Photoshop told me I couldn't use the clone tool unless I changed from 16 bit color depth to 8 bit because it had limited support for 16 bit.  I know there has to be a way to do this.  Any ideas?  By the way, I am using LIghtroom 3.6 and an old Photoshop Elements 5.0.

I am not completely convinced that your Premiere Elements 7 project settings are not at the core of your problems.
    1. You say that you have 1280 x 720 at X progressive frames per second (probably .mov) from a Canon camera and presumed 1920 x 1080 16:9 .mts @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second (aka 60i). What are you setting as the project preset in the new project dialog? Are you just OK'd it and accepting the default which would be NTSC DV Standard (720 x 480)?
    2. As for versions 11 and 12 helping you out with an automatic project preset, sometimes it does it OK and sometimes it does not. So, that feature is not a given cure all for an inappropriate project preset. Whatever the Premiere Elements version, you need to know the properties of your source media and set the project preset accordingly or make sure the program is doing it right. And, when you have a Timeline with a mixed of formats, you need to set priorities.
Is the .mov and .mts both affected by the issue or just one?
    Three things to look at:
    a. The quality of just the 1280 x 720 in a Premiere Elements 7 project set for
    NTSC
    HDV
    HDV 720p30
    b. The quality of just the1920 x 1080 in a Premiere Elements 7 project set for
    NTSC
    AVCHD
    Full HD 1080p30
    c. Then look at the quality of both brought into a Premiere Elements 7 project set for
    NTSC
    AVCHD
    Full HD 1080p30
Please consider. And, if you decide to check out the above, please let us know the outcome.
    Thank you.

  • How to get 16:9 resolutions when using DVI to Video Adapter?

I just plugged my new Intel Mac Mini into a 16:9 widescreen TV with the Apple DVI to Video Adaptor (PAL Video version).
    It only offers me:
    640x480
    720x480
    720x576
    800x600
    1024x768
    (all interlaced)
I do get a choice of 50hz (PAL) or 60hz (NTSC).
However, I don't get the widescreen options I've seen in some Apple screenshots.
I'm plugging it into a PAL TV via an s-video cable.
I intend later to plug it into a larger 42" plasma with same cable, but wanted to test it on this TV first.
    More info:
I noticed, when I bought the "DVI to Video Adapter" that there were NTSC and PAL version. Both seem to do PAL though.
Any help on this most appreciated.

Concerning your question, "if only i knew the the correct entries for a custom displayconfig x timing," I think I can answer that one for you.
It sounds like you have other Macs at your disposal that are correctly driving the TV you are trying to drive with the Intel mini. In that case, install DisplayConfigX on one of those computers and while it is running the TV at the desired resolution, click on the "Card" tab in DCX and then click on the "+" symbol at the bottom right corner. This will open a window in DCX titled "Resolution details" and you will see all the detailed information of the timing you need to enter into DCX on the Intel mini.

  • Photo resolution when using a single photo column

In the photo layout page you can choose the number of columns of photos to display. If you choose 2-3 columns you get little thumbnails of low resolution. Thats fine. But if you choose 1 column, the photo is large but not clear, presumably because  iWeb uses the same algorithm for big and small thumbnails. This is annoying. Anyway round this?

  • Trouble with screen resolution when using Parallels and ACT on Macbook Pro (late 2013)

Hello, I have installed my Sage ACT 2013 software on my Macbook Pro 13" Retina (late 2013) computer that has 16GB of RAM and an i7 core processor using Parallels 9 desktop and Windows 7- 64bit.  The problem is that the screen resolution is very small and condensed to the left side making reading the title boxes and content very difficult.  I reached out to Parallels who was unable to resolve the screen resolution by either  adjusting the display settings or the Windows 7 video settings. Right now they have the Resolution listed as "Scaled" as the "Best for Retina" & "More Space" options did not help the issue.  What is even more strange is that I have Office 2013 installed on the Parallels side so that it can interface with ACT and those screen resolutions read just fine.  Are there any ACT/MAC users out there that might have any insight for me? Thx!

    See -> http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.8.pdf.
In addition to the Windows disc (or USB flash drive with the Windows installer) you'll need a 8GB+ flash drive.
The referenced manual - on page 3, I think, gives you a run-down of what you'll need before you begin the installation. You may also want to post any further Boot Camp questions in the Boot Camp forum -> https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp.

  • Resolutions when using VNC

I wasn't sure which category to put this question in as it's quite generic but here goes.
I want to connect to another Mac, probably an iMac, via VNC (or similar remote desktop connection). I want to view the iMac at a higher resolution than the iMac's native resolution. The higher resolution IS one that the iMac is capable of displaying if an external display is connected. So is it possible to do something like this over VNC? Or do I need to fool the iMac into thinking an external display is connected? Thanks for any info.

I realise that the higher the resolution, the slower the connection. However, I'm just wondering if it's technically possible to set an iMac's resolution to a higher resolution than its native display using VNC. It's more to take screenshots and that sort of thing, it wouldn't be used as a work environment as such.
I want to use resolutions that an external monitor could use (in other words, the graphics card CAN display them if there's an external monitor attached but the native display can't)

  • Limited resolution when using Philips 8800 4k TV with Yosemite

I've a Philips UHD TV 8800series (55PUS8809/12) attached to my MacBook Pro Retina late 2014. Since then I can only pick 1600x900, 720p, 1080i, 1080p resolutions. The 4k resolution is gone.
Any idea how this happened and how I can get this back ?

  • Video quality deteriorates when using title tool or color.

hi there, I'm currently editing a HD project in FCE 4,0,1. All goes well, except when I use the title tool (lower thirds) or when I use color to adjust a certain shot. When using color, the movements begin to jitter. When using the title tool, the video in the background + the title itself becomes pixelated, meaning that the quality drops far below the original HD quality. The bad quality remains when exporting the movie. When I move the title just a tiny bit, the quality goes back to regular HD, but when I render it, it goes back to inferior video. Any ideas, suggestions, insights, ... ? Thank you

  • Zsh cursor position corrupt when using $fg[] for colors and RPROMPT

    Hi,
So far, in my zsh prompt, when using color I did something like:
    %F{yellow}
    in my PROMPT variable.
Now, this seemed to not have worked on some computers (it did not change color, but showed {yellow}).
    So I change to using
    $fg[yellow]
This works, but currupts my cursor position (it is not at the end of the prompt anymore) when (and only when) I also use RPROMPT.
Can this be corrected? What is the most easier way to define colors that works?
Simple example for prompt that does not work:
    PROMPT="$fg[yellow]>"
    RPROMPT="$fg[white]($fg[yellow]%T$fg[white])"
    Thanks!
    Nathan

Enclose your colors with %{/%}, as in
    %{$fg[red]%}

  • Color densitometer or info palette when editing colors?!?

I am new to Premiere Pro, so forgive me if I have overlooked the obvious, but I can't find any sort of info palette that displays color info when using color correction tools within Premiere Pro. I have searched this forum and the Adobe Help info, but haven't found any info.
Considering that Premiere Pro has such powerful color capabilities, I would expect there is a way to measure changes being made. Coming from a Photoshop background, I rely on the densitometer and info palette for accuracy and repeatability. Although Premiere Pro's video scopes display a lot of info (I wish Photoshop had these!), they are not very precise tools. Having a way to measure actual color values would seem critical when matching color between two different pieces of footage.
One option I found is to use the "Leave Color" color correction tool's eye dropper to select a color, and then view the color values by clicking on the sampled color swatch. This opens up the familiar color dialog box with all sorts of handy color info. If Adobe could include that, why didn't they include a simple densitometer (eye dropper tool) and an info palette that displays color reading?
If such features exist, I hope someone will point them out to me. If they exist in a third party color editing plug-in for Premiere Pro, that would be a very compelling reason to buy it. Any suggestions on this would be most appreciated.
    cheers,
    Dave

David - Thanks for your reply. For my work flow in Photoshop, the densitometer and info palette are "must have" tools for repeatability and accuracy of colors, as well as many, many other uses. I calibrate my monitor and control my environment lighting, but recognize that my eyes and color perception will never be as consistent as a densitometer.
I am certain that Premiere Pro users would benefit greatly from these tools, and find it surprising that Premiere Pro doesn't have them. One obvious example would be matching the look of multiple film sources. Sure, you can make rounds of tweaks and preview them as they transition from one to the next. However, a method to read and compare color values would dramatically speed up that process.
I have started working with Premiere Pro's video scopes, and think these would be wonderful tools to work with in Photoshop. BTW, Jeff Sengstack has a good tutorial on the lynda.com web site. However, watching his videos, its quite apparent that he resorts to a lot of trial and error that would often be minimized with the ability to read color values.
