Loss of sharpness upon image rotation: Aperture vs. other software

I have carefully studied the resulting loss of sharpness upon rotation/straightening of images. This topic does not apply to 90/180 degree rotations.
When any image is rotated (be it JPEG or uncompressed), there will be a slight loss of quality (seen as a loss of sharpness) due to interpolation. The method of interpolation applied will affect the degree of quality degradation.
Simply put, professional applications such as Adobe Photoshop and even Adobe Lightroom use superior interpolation methods when performing rotations (and who knows, perhaps for other transformations/scalings also?!). Apple Aperture, on the other hand, uses an interpolation method that renders a loss of image sharpness on par with inferior consumer-level software such as Google Picasa or iView Media Pro. Yes, folks, here's a clear reason to select Adobe Lightroom over Apple Aperture.
Please take a close look at the comparison yourself:
http://web.mac.com/rishisanyal/iWeb/Homepage/Sharpness.jpg
Make sure you are viewing the image I have posted at 100%, not scaled, in order to clearly see the inferior quality of images rotated with Aperture & Picasa.
Apple needs to address this problem by implementing a better interpolation algorithm with its straighten tool. It is sad that we are using and paying for a 'Professional' application that yields results on par with FREE software such as Google Picasa.
As much as I like Aperture for its other features/integration into Mac OS X, I am switching to Lightroom as of now. Straightening/rotating images is an absolute must, used by every photographer on a daily basis. The loss of image quality, therefore, is unacceptable.
Please post to this thread if you have experienced the same problem or are simply concerned over this. The more people that show concern, hopefully, the more likely Apple is willing to do something about this ASAP.

Surely any rotation (apart from the 90/180/270 ones) is by-definition a smoothing operation ? You have to take the values from adjacent pixels and combine them based on the rotation, then average (or use a point-spread function) them to rescale the values back into range.
Looks to me as though the Adobe products are just applying a sharpen operation immediately after the rotation, whereas Aperture isn't. Or Aperture could be using a simple average of the values, where Adobe is doing a gaussian summation-of-components or something similar.
My guess would be that they "do a quick sharpen", otherwise it would take longer to do the rotate. The only way you'll ever know is if the developers tell you though...

  • Aperture vs Other Software

I'm trying to visualize how Aperture interacts with other software, particularly Photoshop and Dreamweaver.
Can I open an image that's been imported into an Aperture library in Photoshop and modify it?
And if I use Aperture to organize images on a website made with Dreamweaver, would I have a choice of publishing those images online using Dreamweaver or Aperture?
Also, I've seen references to using a database to manage/display images. I understand that Aperture itself is a database, but once I publish images online, they become divorced from Aperture, right? Or does/can Aperture publish some sort of database online...or with together with a MySQL database?
I think someone mentioned using keywords to display images with a database. I assumed they were simply referring to displaying images in Aperture - or can keywords be used with another database, like MySQL?
    Thanks.

In aperture you can set an external editor. This allows you to open the image straight in photoshop, it creates a psd file inside Aperture that your external adjustments are saved to. Have a look at the manual for more detail.

  • Sharpness of image in iPhoto

I have a set of jpeg files that I created with another photo editing program. Each photo is 500 max pixels on a side and the file size is about 100 kB. I imported these photos into iPhoto.
I notice that if I double-click on one of the photos in iPhoto and compare it to what I get using Preview by double-clicking on the file in Finder, the former is not quite as sharp as the latter. They are both displayed with the same size on my monitor.
Here's another observation - I exported one of the photos in question from iPhoto using Maximum Quality and Full Size. Using Preview, it appears as sharp as the corresponding photo in Finder.
So there's something about the way the photos are being displayed in iPhoto - some degradation of sharpness compared to the image you get outside of iPhoto using Preview.
    Any idea what gives here?
    Thanks.

I know what you mean. I have compared images displayed in full screen mode with the same image file displayed using other software and the iPhoto display is soft by comparison. It's as if the image is being magnified using a lower resolution sample. At 100% there is no problem; nor does there seem to be a problem viewing the image full size in the normal viewing window, ie. not in full screen mode.
iPhoto is great but because of this behaviour, I don't use it.

  • Aperture image rotation

HI, I am new to macs and aperture and usually use photoshop.
Can anyone tell me how to rotate a picture by anything other than 90 degrees? I'm probably just not looking in the right place, in ps it was under image-rotate-custom. Also I cant find this in iphoto, but maybe you can only do the basics in that.
    Many thanks, Tim

Its complicated. I do need to do this to around 50 pics.
I just got married, and my sister set up a photo both at the venue for people to take pictures of themselves with a remote camera. They had props and a frame to frame themselves. It sounds weird but we got some great pictures. The only thing is most people held the frame a funny angle, (quite a few at around 45 degrees) and I want to crop to just the frame and straighten it.
Its not a problem because I can do it quite easily in photoshop elements, just downloaded a trial for that too. I was just trying the decide between the two anyway, but liked the look of aperture.

  • RAW Image appears sharper in Photoshop than Aperture

Using the 20in screen Raw files that I have imported into Aperture 2.1.1 appear significantly less sharp than when the same file is imported into Photoshop CS3
I also have not found a way of significantly sharpening the Raw based image in Aperture -
The files are from an Olympus E3 with the current camera firmware installed.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

adobe camera raw applies significantly more sharpening (and noise reduction) to images by default. I find the edge sharpen in aperture to be far superior, and i also feel i can squeeze just a little more detail out of my raw files in aperture, especially at higher iso's.
to sharpen, just select the image and press control-S and adjust to your liking. you can also tweak the sharpening applied by default to the images in the raw settings of each picture.

  • Image rotation working in template, but nowhere else

    Hi,
    I'm relatively new to Dreamweaver.
I have a page with some rotating images, created following a Communitymx recommendation (http://www.communitymx.com/content/article.cfm?cid=651FF).
The website template (http://www.johnaverill.com/templates/main_template.dwt) seems to rotate images perfectly; however, image rotation on index.html and the others will not work.
Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks, Paul

    osgood_
ah, you are correct.  sorry, I didn't catch that I was i am just posting the same old apparent bad code (index.html).
I did create index_2.html and rename it to index.html per your instructions of Mar 5 (i've actually done it twice now). Pictures not rotating with the index_2 or the new index.html either.
Also noticed recreating the index continues to get me the extra:
    function randomImages(){
    if(counter == (imgs.length)){
    counter = 0;
the template seems to be putting this in there new index for some reason.
    New index here:

Keep in mind, if you add any side padding or border to the div itself, it will be added to the width you define to create the *total* width. • Images Rotated 90 Degrees on prints

i am having this issue with the Apple version of Adobe Illustrator CS3. We just got a new printer (Sharp MX-3501N) and it has a Fiery 2 print server on it. When i print illustrator documents to it, the first page comes out great. Comes out landscape on 11x17 paper. But if i tell it i want any more then just one print (2 or more copies) the first page comes out fine, each additional page comes out with the image rotated 90 degrees and is printed right off the page and leaves a blank space on the bottom of the page. Adobe is updated, MacOS (10.5) is updated, i have tried printing from other programs and everything else prints fine, and i have updated the drivers.
I am an authorized sharp service center and i talked to Sharp technician support about it and they said that because Adobe handles the print job from start to finish, there is likely a setting in illustrator that is messed up. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

I'm not sure if I understand your problem. If it uses a proper PS RIP, the rasterized version will be stored in it and it should initiate printing multiple copies, not the computer that sends over the PS/ PDF data. Are you sure you're not missing out on some silly check mark somewhere in teh printer driver? what you describe strikes me more as an "only print first page differently/ print cover sheet" option as you would use them in an office program. Is Illustrator actually set to handle the print job (which would be kinda pointless on a hardware RIP)? If so, you should get this odd behavior with other printer drivers as well (PDF document printer etc.) and then indeed it would be the program's fault...

  • Images in Aperture are fuzzy but crisp in iPhoto.

I have a new MacBookPro with Retina display and Aperture v. 3.4.1 and iPhoto v. 9.4.1.  Identical images in an Aperture Library and iPhoto Library appear fuzzy in Aperture but crisp and sharp in iPhoto.  Interestingly, if I use the loupe to observe the Aperture  image at the same mag as the original, the loupe image appears sharp.  If I open an iPhoto Library in Aperature, the image is sharp.  What gives?  How can I display images in Aperture so that they have the same, sharp resolution as they have in iPhoto, an iPhoto Library opened in Aperture, or within the Aperture loupe?

Select all the Images in a Project and while holding down the "Option" key run "Photos➞Generate Preview".  ("Option" changes "Photos➞Update Preview" to  "Photos➞Generate Preview").
    Any change?

  • Apple working on a way of including geotagging images into Aperture?

    Hi,
We have several ways of geotagging images before they are transported into a Aperture library, but I would have liked a way of tagging already existing images and have already suggested that apple could include this in the Import Menu.
Is it unlikely that Apple will have a look at ways to geocode images inside Aperture in the future?
    Best regards,
    Kjell Are Refsvik

You can read the AppleScript dictionary in Script Editor.
Assuming you would use IPTC tags for this, here is the relevant information:
IPTC tag n : This class represents an IPTC tag of an image version.
    elements
    contained by image versions.
    properties
name (string, r/o) : This is the name of the IPTC tag.
value (string) : This is the value of the IPTC tag.
So you could create a tag for geographic location and put GPS coordinates or whatever in there. Writing something to iterate through your photos and update this information based on name/value pairs wouldn't be THAT hard.
Note Automator could also help here -- it has an action "Set IPTC Tags":
    Set IPTC Tags
This action will apply the chosen IPTC tags to the Aperture images passed from the previous action.
    Input: (Aperture Image)
Options: You can tab between the various text fields in the Action View. Select the checkboxes next to the text fields whose value you wish to apply. Checkboxes will automatically be selected upon text entry into a field.
    Result: (Aperture Image)
This is just building blocks -- don't expect me to guide you how to write it -- but with experimentation this shouldn't be too hard if you have AppleScript and/or Automator experience. The latter is more approachable for the novice. The former is more powerful.

  • Images rotated .

Using Photoshop Elements 10 with Windows 8.1, slide shows assembled in Photoshop Elements 10 and sent to Premier Elements 10 result in some of the images rotated through 90 degrees and being unable to correct them. Using another computer with Windows Vista and the same images every thing works ok. Can anyone help me correct this.
    Many thanks.

Solved my own problem. Nuked the Aperture preferences and everything seems to be working now.

  • Can not view images in Aperture

    Mavens!
I  was editing images in Aperture 3.5.1 ( latest Mavericks / iMAC) and went to add  sharpening using CTRL + S when all the images dissappeared in the viewer.
I can still see the thumbnails - I can export original images etc - I just can't see anything in the viewer - it's grey and blank.
There are NO filters / searches in place (the usual gotcha for hiding images).
Initially I had the feeling I must have mis-queued the keystroke for sharpening and somehow hidden the images in the library. But now I find that all of my libraries have this problem.  Aperture will only display thumbnails and nothing in the viewer.
Coudl this be a "delete plist"  scenario?  Any clues for further invesigation greatly appreacited as I'm stumped.
    Ciao

    Hello Kirby
Thank you for yur reply and sorry I have taken so oong to get back to you.  We just had a catergory 2 tropical cyclone cross the coast a few km away - been a little pre-occupied.
That said - the problem has gone away.
During the session where it arose I restarted the system twice and the systems persisted - so I am a little mystified.
And again thank you for reminding of the "try new user account" wrinkle  - obviously the first step for serious troubleshooting.
    Kind regards
    Russell

  • How do I set the desktop wallpaper with an image in aperture 3?

Sorry for the silly question, but I can't find how to set my desktop wallpaper with an image in aperture 3. It was simple when using Iphoto, but I can't find the method in aperture.
    Thanks,
    Dale.

Command(⌘)-9 is no longer listed in the list of default keyword shortcuts, and it has no effect.
I wrote a little Automator service to bring the Command(⌘)-9 back.
A copy of this service is here for download:
    http://dreschler-fischer.de/scripts/SetDesktopPicture.workflow.zip
    This service uses three actions:
    Aperture: Get selected images
    Export Masters
    Finder: Set the Desktop Picture
To install it, open the workflow in Automator and save it as service.
To use it, select any image in Aperture, then activate the service from the Aperture menu -> Services, and it will set the master of the selected image as Desktop picture.
If you like, you can assign the Command(⌘)-9 key to the service (in the System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts Panel) and then  turn any image you selected into Desktop wallpaper by simply pressing (⌘)-9.
@Frank Caggiano, if you are still following this thread: for some reason this workflow succeeds with exporting the master, but I could not get it to work with the versions instead. Any ideas?
Caution: this service will clutter the Desktop with the exported images. If you want to avoid that, change the export action to export the image to a different folder.

How do I save an image that I have magnified in Aperture or I Photo?

Could you post a screen-shot or otherwise verify this?  I've been using Aperture for several years, several hours a day — I'm an Aperture Certified Pro — and I have, to the best of my memory, never seen "File ▹ Save" in Aperture.

  • Is it possible to add a text box to an image in Aperture?

is it possible to add a text box/caption to an image in Aperture? (I do NOT have photoshop)

Do you want to write it directly onto the image? Then install and use the free BorderFX plug-in for Aperture. It will let you write text annotations directly onto the image or onto a border.

You can download BorderFX for Aperture from here: http://www.iborderfx.com/BorderFX
