Loss of sound from mic (ext.)

I have issues with my exernal mic on my MBP.
I have tried looking at sound in the menu, but the built-in microphone works.
Didn't realize it before I got the iLife 09, so it could be a problem, that goes a few months back.
I'd appreciate any advice on this matter.

Are you using standard microphones? The MBP's audio line in is just that - a line-in (note that the icon is not a microphone, but a circle with two triangles). That means it expects 'line-level' input, which you'd get from an audio mixer or a powered microphone. Normal (unpowered) mics do not have sufficient signal. The preference pane input meter 'jumps' when you connect it due to the large change in impedance that occurs right when you connect.
You'll need to get a powered mic or a USB solution such as the Griffin iMic (which does work with a standard mic).
BTW, RE diagnostic software for your hardware (although I don't think it's relevant here), you can insert the Install DVD that came with your Mac, and reboot with the d key pressed, which runs the Apple Hardware Test.
Hope this helps...
Ps. NeuroAnatomist, in my case!

  • Loss of Sound from Internal Speakers

My PowerBook G4 DVI has lost it's ability to play any sound from it's internal speakers. A check of the Sound Output preferences in System Preferences shows that the sound is routed to Headphones, despite no headphones being plugged in. Partially plugging a headphone jack into the headphone socket (and jiggling it about a bit) results in the sound being routed to the internal speakers. Sound re-routes tot he headphones as soon as I remove the headphone jack.
Is this a hardware problem or has anyone else experienced this?

    Welcome to the discussions Mark.
Very occasionally when I remove my headphones from the socket the PowerBook still thinks the headphones are plugged in and doesn't re-route the audio to the internal speakers. I find that plugging the headphones in and out again fixed the problem. I'm not sure whether it's a hardware or software issue (I suspect hardware), but you're not the only one to suffer from it.
Unless you're still under warranty, plugging in and out is the only solution I've come across
You could also post feedback to Apple about this issue using the link below. Apple won't respond to you (hey generally don't read these discussions), but since it is a bug of some sort, they should be made aware of it.

  • Intermittent loss of sound from my midi keyboard

I am using an M-Audio Keystation 49e in GarageBand 10.0.2 on a MacBook Pro and it continually loses sound--i.e. I am playing the keyboard and hearing the sound just fine and suddenly I can no longer hear sounds from the keyboard (I continue to hear other tracks in GarageBand).  The odd thing is that GarageBand still shows that it detects the midi device.  Sometimes clicking "Reset MIDI Drivers" fixes the problem temporarily and sometimes unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in fixes the problem temporarily but it is happening so frequently as to render playing a whole song impossible.  Anyone encountered this before?  I am thinking maybe it's a problem with the keyboard itself but I am not sure.
    Thanks for the help!

  • No output sound from output port/analog audio: Need help

hello, I want to connect my analog audio equipment to my iMac. I have done this in the past with my old G3. I have connected the RCA cables to a 3.5 mm jack and put it into the audio input port, which was what worked on the G3. When I open the sound page for input & output, on Output I can see the volume bar thing moving in relation to the sounds from mic, turntable, etc: all the analog audio things. However, there is no actual output of sound through the iMac;s speakers or a headphone. The output page is pretty simple so I am real sure I have all the rigt things checked, unchecked etc. Any ideas? Thanks.

I had what sounds like a similar problem to jazzzrat. i had my macbook setup to a stereo and it worked for over a year. suddenly no sound came out of the stereo. in my case, it definitely was a software setup thing.
plug in your stereo jack into the audio out port. then go to system preferences-->sound-->output. on there you should see, under "device for sound output": Name=Headphones, port=built-in output. (if you see name=built in speakers, you plugged in the wrong plug). Now go down to the bottom of the window and UNcheck the "mute" box, and make sure the volume slider is midway or more.
For some reason, mac allows you to mute the "headphones" and "built in speakers" selectively. we have no idea how that box got checked, that remains a complete mystery. but when we eventually found -- and unchecked -- the box, our stereo output came back just fine.
i hope this works for you. good luck and have a good new year.

  • Why does a sound from Jampack suddenly not play (after it was working fine)

Have a track-----French Horn part written in and was all playing fine. However, at a certain point it just won't play the French Horn part and/or even play the french horn sound or any of the new horn sounds. But the part is there (i see the midi notes and it plays it back on just a piano sound).
Nothing muted/soled, etc. However, if I start an entirely new session/song, then it plays back a new horn part fine.
Even if I create just a new track it won't play the part on the old session.
    Thanks for your help.

What  you are reporting is a known Premiere Elements 12 issue, the loss of sound from numbered Audio Tracks and Soundtrack after narration has been added to the project with the program's Narration Tool.
It was only looked at in another thread earlier this evening and resolved.
Premier Elements 12 for Mac - After narration, only Narration track plays back.
The fix suggested by Llamadude99 and variations there of seem to be the answer. Please go through the link above and the links within in the for even more background on the issue. I have not been able to reproduce the problem in Premiere Elements 12/12.1 Windows with a desktop microphone (computer jack connection) in order to get at the core of the issue first hand.
Some background questions...what computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 running on? And what type of microphone are you using for creating narration with the Premiere Elements 12 Narration Tool? Are you using Premiere Elements 12 or the Premiere Elements 12.1 Update obtained via the project's Help Menu/Update?
Please let us know the outcome.
    Thank you.

I had similar problems and could get nothing whatsoever when trying to record from the microphone or using it in Skype (it was obviously muted completely in some way). Tried everything I could in alsamixer, and installing PulseAudio didn't manage to get it working either.
However I installed gnome-alsamixer, and ticked a few 'Rec.' check boxes and everything works now as it should! Sorry I can't pin down exactly what switched it on.

I have foud the solution - rather stupid. The system setting for audio input was at 70%, increasing it to 100% solves the problem!

  • Recording and playing sound input from mic simultaneously in iphone/ipad

I want to simultaneously record and play the sound from a mic in iphone. As thecricket commentory application.
Please provide me a solution for this.
    Is this possible in iOs.

This probably isn't going to sound very helpful, for which I apologise in advance, but I'm afraid it's the truth...
The only way you stand any way of doing any of this is by using ASIO4ALL, which can aggregate different drivers from multiple devices. But I don't rate your chances too highly, I'm afraid - USB mics have long been the problem child of computer-based audio. On top of that, you are trying to get sounds in and out of a separate device at the same time - not only that, but it's a Creative Labs gamer's device and they are second only to USB mics in terms of the 'difficult' stakes - search this forum!
A much, much better way to attempt to do this would be to use a sensible ASIO external device with sufficient inputs, and a mic that plugs into it, not a USB one. That way you could route the inputs and outputs appropriately, and use the device's monitoring so that you could monitor what you need to. I wouldn't attempt to do anything like this any other way, I'm afraid. Another approach (which can be made to work well) is to use an external mixer to do most of the work - often it's easier to set up the monitoring on these. You can get mixers with the appropriate interface built-in, and they don't cost a fortune either. Mackie and Behringer make suitable devices.

  • Capture Sound from Soundcard AND Mic

    Hi,
My idea is to make an application to record songs on the fly.
That is a user can play a song from my library and with his mic to
sing along with the song. Now i want to capture those two signals
(the sound from the player and the sound from the mic and record it
with FMS to one .flv file.
The way to capture the mic's sound i know, what i don't know
is how to capture the sound produced by the player.
Is there any way to record the souncards output through flash
or do i have to do some sort of stream that specific sound to fms.
    Thanks in advance
    Dimitris

On windows, you can use the sound card's mixer to set the
audio source. In the recording view of the mixer, select the
channels you want to record, or choose the "stereo mix".
Unfortunately, this can't be done programatically through
    actionscript .
I don't know if it can be done on a Mac, as there isn't a
    sound card to speak of.
