Loss of speed to broadband connection..Any advice?

Hello
Wondering if i could grab some help /advice.
I have just come back from a short break and have noted that my internet connection has slowed from the normal 3.8mb connection down to around 0.5mb.
now having read a few posts in the forum i have noticed that my noise margin which is usually around 6db/6db down/up, is now reporting 28.3db/6db down/up.
i am assuming that this is the cause of my slower internet connection. When i first logged into my modem eariler today i noticed that the connection time was only 2.5 days., so i am assuming it has reset while i have been away.
I have since tried to reset my modem and it is still reporting the the same speeds.
Is there anything i can do to reset the margin or is it something that need to be carried out by some other BT type genius.
When i have had issues last year i did get some success from the call centres but this took ageeeeeess to resolve.
I have posted below details from my moden. Notice the connectiopn time is due to the reset i carried out.
Iam currently running a home hub 2 which is directly into my test socket. (and has been since i had issues last year)
Thanks in advance for any response.

  • Intermittent/slow connection, any advice is appreciated..

    Hi all,
First the basics: Dell XPS PC with a WMP54g PCI adapter
Apple iMac with a wireless airport adapter
Router is a Linksys WRT54g, Charter cable internet 10meg service.
I've had this set-up for some time and just added the Apple recently. I've not done any software and/or firmware updates.  I always get excellent (pegged) link and signal strength bars on both computers.
My problem is slow/intermittent connections. I certainly never reach 10meg service and constantly get the "You are connected to the access point but the internet cannot be found" message when I check the monitor.  I just never know when my connection will fail and hate paying for high speed service that I never attain.
If I could provide any more information that would help you help me please ask. Thanks to all that respond. I know I've certainly left something out....the intermittency of my internet availablility just has me at ends..

Try this setting on XP Desktop:
    1) Click start >> All Programs >> Linksys Wireless G adapter >> Click uninstall.
    2) Reboot the computer…. You will see “found new hardware” …insert the CD for the adapter ….exit out of set up wizard….. install the drivers for the adapter
    3) Try to connect to the network & see its working or not.
Let me know whether it works or not.

  • My MacBookPro connects to my WIFi but my Ipad2 can't connect, any advice welcome.

Have been using my new ipad2 on home wifi, now it won't connect. No problems connecting on MacBookPro. Please help

Power down the router, wait ten seconds and power it up again.
If that doesn't help, my guess is a firewall in the router.  For reasons that I don't understand, the firewall can block IOS (iPad/iPod) communication without impacting computer communication.
You need to access the router's administrative menus.  Contact the router supplier if you need help there.  If a firewall is present, turn it off and test the iPad.  If it now works, turn the firewall back on but weaken it a notch.  Test the iPad again.  Repeat as required.

  • Can i get any more speed from my connection?

hi i was wondering if anyone could tell me if i could squeeze any more out of my connection. the short up time is due to me changing my filter. prior to that i had a solid 22 day connection. any advice would be great here is my stats:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 7.7 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 4 Mbps-21 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 8.46 Mbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 1Mbps
     Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.83 Mbps

It depends on the connection Keith. When I was switched over to 21CN, my connection initially synced at 19759Kbps with the 6dB profile. However when the DLM tryed my connection on the 3dB Profile, it jumped up to 22111Kbps. That's over a 2 meg jump in speed which to some would make the difference. That would be a fifth more sync speed for mshaw43488 if it increased by 2 Meg.
Looking at mshaw43488's connection, I think I'd have to agree with you on the errors bit.
The number of errors (FEC) which his connection has suffered in 17 minutes is about the maximum of what I'd tolerate on my connection if it had interleaving enabled.
Mshaw43488, What I would suggest is to leave your connection synced for about 10 days and post back your stats after that so we can see how many errors have occured in a 10 day period.
Obviously the 3dB profile is your choice but depending on the errors in that 10 day period would depend on whether it is recommended or not as a 3dB profile can really cause your connection to suffer in reliability and performance if it can't handle it.
Only reason I recommend this is because sometimes a bulk load of errors can occur when the modem initially syncs which *may* be what has been recorded.
Also the DLM has you on Interleaving judging by the FEC errors which may be another reason not to lower the SNR.

  • Ping test keep dropping any advice

    Hi,
I had this problem 3 weeks agos, now every night from 8pm - 12pm very unstable other time the connection is fine no problem.
i run ping test (from a cable connection) and it keep dropping, i sent 100 ping test to www.google.com -n 100 i get 3% loss which make my game play very unstable and unplayable.
i've try all sort of things unplug tv box disconnect all laptop disable wireless and test and still dropping.
also called Bt many time and done.
many times, speed test, line test, noise test replaced my Home hub twice and i still having same problem.
it was fine anytime other than from 8pm - 12pm
this very frastrate me because if is work fine on other time that mean there are no problem with my equipment and my
setup i dont have anything install or turn on practically on that time of night.
i suspect someone is running a or business on our block make big amount of traffic causes my unstable connection.
    any advices ?
    thanks,

in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router unless HH4 may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results .
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Broadband connection and speed problems

    Hi,
On Wednesday morning my broadband connection went down and could not reconnect from 600am til 700pm. It did manage to get a connection to stay up at around 900pm, but since then the connection has dropped about four times a day.
I have checked my equipment, wiring etc, connected directly to the test socket, using  a new ADSL microfilter etc etc. I have also checked for known problems in my area and have done some quiet call tests(17070).
There are apparently no problems in my area, but a couple of the quiet call tests were crackly.
Since last night (Friday) at around 900pm the connection has managed to stay up but my connection speeds, both up and down are much much lower than they used to be.
Since Wednesday night I have performed some BT speedtests.
D/L Profile for my line is - 17.64 Mbps, but actual speed currently varies between around 8 and 11 Mbps.
U/L Profile for my line is - 0.83 Mbps, but speed currenty varies between 0.01 and 0.3 Mbps.
Before Wednesday, my download speeds were typically 16-17Mbps and upload speeds were typically 0.8Mbps.
    With very little variation.
I have included some stats from my BT HH3...
    Wednesday nights ADSL Line status,  after I managed to get a connection to stay up. below;
    ADSL Line Status
    Connection Information
    Line state: Connected
    Connection time: 0 days, 04:59:49
    Downstream: 18.65 Mbps
    Upstream: 443.9 Kbps
    ADSL Settings
    VPI/VCI: 0/38
    Type: PPPoA
    Modulation: G.992.5 Annex A
    Latency type: Fast
    Noise margin (Down/Up): 4.9 dB / 26.4 dB
    Line attenuation (Down/Up): 11.1 dB / 5.3 dB
    Output power (Down/Up): 20.1 dBm / 12.9 dBm
    FEC Events (Down/Up): 0 / 0
    CRC Events (Down/Up): 758 / 36
    Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
    Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
    Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
    HEC Events (Down/Up): 23957 / 6
    Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 300 / 4
    Current ADSL line status. After the line being up for 17 hours below;
    ADSL Line Status
    Connection Information
    Line state: Connected
    Connection time: 0 days, 17:17:36
    Downstream: 19.52 Mbps
    Upstream: 443.9 Kbps
    ADSL Settings
    VPI/VCI: 0/38
    Type: PPPoA
    Modulation: G.992.5 Annex A
    Latency type: Fast
    Noise margin (Down/Up): 3.2 dB / 28.1 dB
    Line attenuation (Down/Up): 11.0 dB / 5.2 dB
    Output power (Down/Up): 20.2 dBm / 12.2 dBm
    FEC Events (Down/Up): 0 / 0
    CRC Events (Down/Up): 133 / 36
    Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
    Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
    Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
    HEC Events (Down/Up): 636 / 9
    Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 117 / 4
One thing that stands out is the Noise Margin of 4.9dB and now 3.2dB. I gather that these values are on the low side. Is 3.2dB acceptable?
I assume my line attenuation values are low as I live very close to my local exchange. I assume that these values are good.
There are some CRC HEC and Error Seconds values. I must admit that I dont fully understand these but I assume these are not good.
One other thing worth mentioning is that the phone cable to my property comes along my front wall over from a neighbouring property. Whilst checking this cable this morning in the daylight, I have noticed that someone, most probably my neighbour, has pulled the cable way from its fixing on the wall in order to put a fence post up on the wall.
The fence post has been there for a few months, with no apparent affect ro my phone and broadband, but I'm concerned that this could have damaged the cable, splitting the shielding or breaking a wire in the cable, or perhaps loosened the connectors to the juntion box it is connected to on the neighbours wall.
Could damage to the cable be the cause of my connection and speed problems?
Also, is it possible that my BTHH3 is faulty?
Any advice would be very welcome.
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    A little more information.
I have noticed that on a number of occasions when making or receiving voice calls, the broadband connection completely drops. It doesnt happen on all calls, and doesnt seem to happen when just going 'offhook' and listening to a dialling tone.
There is a definite crackle and hiss on most of the voice calls. But only seems to be audible on the home phone.
After a little browsing, I came upon a logging program "Routerstatshub". When I leave this running it logs changes to ADSL stats.
Looking at the logs, I've noticed that when making voice calls, the upstream noise margin always seems to drop considerably, sometimes down to 0dB.
On some calls, both upstream and downstream noise margin drop to 0dB and the broadband connection drops.
I have also noticed that upstream line attenuation increases from around 5dB to around 28dB every hour or so. This doesnt appear to coincide with the voice calls.
CRC and HEC error increase dramatically at the same time as the noise margin changes. HEC goes up by 10s of thousands.
I'm still directly connected into the mastersocket with a new microfilter and no extension cable.
By the way, my connection speeds went down to an all time low yesterday , 1.7Mbps down.
I have now replaced my DECT phone with a corded phone and will make some more voice calls to see if that makes any difference.
Any ideas about what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated.

  • Slow Broadband Connection Speed

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice please.  Thanks.
I have a BT Home Hub 2. I have had it for about 4 years. I have generally always received a very good stable broadband with speeds that are acceptable for my use.
About 5 weeks I started to have problems with the broadband connection dropping out several times a day and then the wifi signal being intermittent.  I put up with it for a while but then decided to contact Customer Services.
After several phone calls to Customer Services I had replaced all filters and wiring and plugged my router directly into the Exchange socket in the wall. None of this made the slightest bit of difference.
Finally, about two weeks ago, I was asked to replace the router with another one which I did.  This made an immediate improvement. I was told that it would then take about 10 days for my line to stabilise but I should see a gradual improvement in the speed over that time.
Since then the speed has actually gradually deteriorated and for the last couple of days it has been running at 0.6mbps (the slowest it’s run since the problems first started).
I’ve spoken again to the Customer Services who say that this is part of the stabilisation process and to be patient for a few more days and it will improve.
I’m not an expert but is the guidance I am being giving correct or am I being giving the round around? It just seems odd that the connection is getting worse not better.  Am I perhaps just being too impatient and will it start to get better?
    I’d appreciate any advice please.
    Thanks.

  • Ongoing Broadband connection drops and slow speed ...

Over the last few weeks i seem to be having random issues with my Broadband connection and teh connection has become very unstable and unreliable
The connection will randomly drop and re-establish, often at a much lower speed that it should be. I regularly get around 3 - 4MB download speed which is good for my area but often find that when it reconnections i get around 1MB. To resolve the issue i usually have to restart my hub (BT HH2) which then usually gets me back to the normal speed.
Luckily I do have a SamKnows box which shows this issue in a graphical form. Note how unstable the connection and speed seems to be! Surely it is not be like this?
    http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f168/damo-gti/bbconnectionissues.jpg

i forgot my passcode for the ipad and i can't connect to iTunes because it keeps giving me error message that i have to unlcok the ipad first... any advice on how to restore the ipad or unlock it?

You have to restore the device within iTunes. You want to use the same computer that you always sync with so that you can restore your app data and settings. You can restore with any other computer, but you will lose everything on the iPad.
This will tell you how to restore

    Hi,
When Zeen's battery level goes below 5 %; it tends to Reset to Default where it looses all the connections and sync to the printer or router.
So its very important to make sure that Zeen's battery does not go to low. To avoid this I would suggest to charge Zeen regularly.
You may try the steps below as of now and check the results.
We need to Factory Reset the Zeen making sure it is connected (Docked) on the C510a printer.
Once it is docked try the steps below:-
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02844556&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_r1002_us...
Open the above link; and then perform the Factory Reset as shown in Solution Two.
Once completed try connecting to Wireless and check the results.
though I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

  • HT5479 My brand new ipod nano is no longer connedting to my brand new jbl wireless speaker. It worked fine the first day and now either cannot find the apeaker or the connection "fails."  Any advice?

I bought my dad a new ipod nano and a jbl wireless speaker from the same apple store. Everything worked perfectly with the bluetooth connectivity the first day. Then my dad accidentally hit the "forget this device" button when he was trying to turn the bluetooth off. Now the nano either does not recognize the device or it will recognize the device but not connect. I would appreciate any advice.

Does it charge on a computer? Does it appear in iTunes?
    If so:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
