Lossless JPG rotation with Preview?

If I rotate a JPG in Preview, will it be a lossless rotation?

I had my question answered here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6233761
Thanks for directing me to that part of the forum.

  • How to perform lossless JPG rotation?

If I rotate a JPG 90/180/270 degrees in Preview or iPhoto or Aperture, will it be a lossless rotation? If not, are there plugins or third party apps that can?

    g-pod:
iPhoto does lossless rotate. You can check it out by rotating a photo and then dragging it to the desktop. Check the size in the Finder and drag it into an open Safari window do confirm that it has been rotated. Safari does not read the orientation tag so it's a good test.
    Happy New Year
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Can't import JPGs but I can open with Preview

    iPhoto 4, OSX 10.3.9
I copied hundreds of JPGs (from XP) to OSX and tried to import them into iPhoto. I get an error message.
    "Unreadable Files
The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type of the files may not contain valid data).
If I open the image with Preview and then save it as a JPG, I can import it, however it is impractical to do this with the volume of images I have. Is this a known issue? Are there any workarounds?

    Just about anywhere else...
iPhoto is a database and will import the pics to the iPhoto Library Folder when you add them to the library. It will not import pics from the iPhoto Library Folder as a protection against duplication. So, put the pics on the desktop, import them and trash the files from the desktop when you're finished.

  • Colors off in Preview when viewing JPG's with sRGB profiles

I have a 30" Dell monitor and my display preferences are set to use the calibrated profile for it. When I view JPGs images in any color managed application such as Preview the colors are horribly off. They are kind of dull, unsaturated, pale. JPG's that don't have sRGB profiles show up fine.
I can fix the problem in photoshop by opening the image and then doing a save for web which strips the profile information off of the jpg.
If I use sRGB as my monitor's profile colors are consistent across all applications but the problem is the colors are really bad. Extremely over contrasty and very dark.
What's going on with my color profiles?

    Hi topmodelphotography ..
If you're keen about running the right profiles - please don't mess up the way you do. The sRGB profile that you're using is showing a narrower color space (value 0-16 of blacks are out). The sRGB profile is mainly used for consumer monitors in the cheap end where contrast conditions are worse that expensive and professional displays to present contents in a similar way across manufacturers. If you should use any predefined color profile, please use Adobe (1998) profiling.
best practive is calibrating your monitor with a good calibrator and use these profiles.
In System Preferences you should set up the calibrated profile and the same goes for all Adobe apps under Color Settings.
    Useful reading concerning Color Profiles:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=321382&sliceId=1
Your issue with Preview is most likely due to erroneous setup in System Settings. otherwise try and disable Dithering in Preview.
And don't use Save for Web if you intend to keep at least a minor part of your colors in your images. Use TIFF's where possible (without 'upgrading' images from compressed formats such as JPEG's, GIF's, etc.)

  • CS3 crash when opening JPG (rotated in Irfanview)

I just recently bought a new computer, so I thought I could at last use Photoshop CS3, but apparently it does not like jpg's that are rotated (with lossless jpg conversion) in Irfanview.
Until this point every file works, even those jpg's which are not rotated.
The error report can be seen here: http://oranse.kapsi.fi/cs3error.txt
Are there any suggestions for a solution or workaround?
    [EDIT]
OK, I can now open the images via Camera RAW.
But I still consider this as an issue, although not a severe one, because I intend to shoot everything on RAW from now on. But there are still tons of old photos on JPG to be postprocessed.

That isn't necessarily a solution since "lossless" operations on jpegs is
something of a misnomer. All it means is that they are not recompressed. To
    quote the Irfanview help file:
"Note: Lossless JPG operations like flip or rotate work only if the image
height is a multiple of 16 (JPG specification). If this is not the case,
unused image lines will be removed.
Note: Your original JPG file will be changed/overwritten!"
As far as I can tell, the same applies in all programs offering jpeg
    lossless transformations.

  • Converting TIF to JPG messes with colour

Hi. I just purchased a program called Bracketeer (a really awesome program for making HDR photos), but it is only able to output images in TIF format. I want to save some harddrive space, so I tried to convert these TIFs to JPG with Preview, but doing this conversion makes the photo darker. I also tried using iPhoto to do the conversion but the same thing happened.
I also tried using Preview to convert the TIF to a PNG and JPEG-2000 and in both cases it worked fine (the converted images look exactly the same as the TIF). Something else I found is that I could convert the PNG to a JPG (so start as TIF, convert to PNG, then convert the PNG to JPG) and the image still looked fine. Because PNG is lossless I'll probably continue using this method to convert the TIFs to JPGs, but I'm wondering why Preview and iPhoto can't properly convert the TIF directly to JPG?
    -Eric

My guess is that this "Bracketeer" application fails to embed a relevant ICC profile in its output and Preview is filling in the blanks with a default profile that does not accurately describe the color space of the image. Can you post an example TIFF?

  • Problem with Preview and PSD files - random gray square

Hi guys, hope you can help...
I've got a problem with Preview and PSD files.
If I open in Preview both an original jpg straight from my reflex and the photoshop version of the same picture, the psd file presents a gray square (of what it seems unrendered image) in a random area of the photo (sometimes in the center.). The square is quite big...
If I zoom in or zoom out it disappears...if I scroll to another photo and then back to the psd, the square it's there again...sometimes in a different position.
I've tried the same psd on my older iMac with leopard...and got no problem at all.
I suspect it got something to do with my Ati...
(this is the second iMac 27...the first went back for gray banding on the lcd screen and flickering and yellow tinge........)
    Thanks for your help.
    DAve.

    maybe I'm onto something...
I've just found out that opening Preview in 32bit mode (instead of default 64bit) works flawlessly with any psd files. If I switch back to 64bit mode, Preview is much faster but the gray square comes back...
It seems like the i7 is much faster than the Ati....
    Any more realistic ideas?

  • IBooks Author Scale and Rotate in preview

I just started with iBooks Author. I made a simple book with several chapters and pages. When previewing the book in the iPad the pages zoom and rotate with a two finger gesture. Then snap bak to the default scale and rotation. Imagine trying to pinch to zoom, but having the page scale.
How can make the pages use the standard zooming behavior with out rotating and hold the zoom without snapping back to the initial scle?

Sorry about that. I haven't used that software before, but they appeared to fit the bill according to their descriptions.
There is another program, Image Tricks, that is for Tiger and it will let you rotate images and save the changes.

I can't find any hacks for Preview that will let you do what you want.

  • Export from iPhoto 4 yeilds JPG's with Quicktime icon?

    Hi,
    I am using iPhoto 4.0.3
I am exporting some old photos from iPhoto,
    I choose File>Export...
Full size images / Use Title / Use Extension
    Format : JPG
After the export if I locate the files in the finder window,
all the files have .jpg extension.
Some files have a mini version of the photo as their icon.
Other files have the preview logo with JPEG underneath as their icon.
Some others have the quicktime logo with JPEG underneath as their icon.
When I double click on those with the quicktime logo, Classic tries to start up!
    What's going on?
How can I get the photos to export correctly without the Quicktime logo?
    Also,
I'd like all the photos exported to have a mini version of the photo as their icon. How do I get the ones with the preview logo to convert to ones with the mini photo icon?
    Also 2,
Some of photos open with preview and others open with Graphic converter.
How do I select Preview as the default program for opening all JPG files?
    Many Thanks

Does anyone know why some of the jpg's have the preview icon
and others have a mini-photo icon?
Hi, Callie. This probably reflects different original source(s) for the batches of pictures that have different icons. The original sources may have defined the files according to their own defaults, as "belonging" to QT PictureViewer, Preview, or any other application capable of displaying them. Once a file is on your computer, as you've discovered, you can change the application with which it's associated to a different application of your choosing. But the application assigned by your camera, a friend's camera, or a web site before you import them onto your computer isn't under your control. Only after you have the file on your computer can you change that preassigned association.
If you open the Get Info window for any .jpg file, change its "Open with" application to the one you prefer, and then click the "Change All" button below it, all JPEG files that are on your computer will afterward open into that application when double-clicked, and will be displayed with an icon representing that application (unless they are given picture-preview icons). I'm not sure if that will be true of all .jpg files that you load onto your computer afterward, or whether those will retain the associated application and icon assigned by their source until you change it. You can experiment with that and see.

  • Edited a .jpg file with MSPaint, edit doesn't show up in Dreamweaver. ?

In my images folder for my website are several .jpg files. I edited the .jpg file in MS Paint.  I added a few blue pixels to stand out.  Then I reopened Dreamweaver MX in local view, looked at the .jpg with Preview in Browser/Firefox, and there were no blue pixels.  I assume that the image must be permanently cached somewhere on my computer that I can't change.  Uploading the file didn't help.  Reloading dreamweaver didn't help.  Windows XP, Dreamweaver MX.  This just started a few days ago.
I posted this on another of these adobe forums, but then I saw that nothing had been written on the forum in 2 months and that I was one of the most active participants, and I'm pretty new.

    Paul Klinkman wrote:
It's a new day so the computer was powered down and back up.
I deleted the image from the page.  I used "add image" and found the image.  I have the same old image, the one that should have no longer existed.  No dice.  Note that this process doesn't involve Firefox in any way that I can see.
You say "the one that should have no longer existed". Does that mean that it does indeed exist? I mean... physically, is the original image still in the folder? It just seems to me that it would be impossible to "select" an image or even a version of it, that no longer exists. It's like if you paint a red door yellow, there's no chance that one day you will walk past it and it will suddenly be red again all by itself.
Another thing, have you tried renaming the edited image to something nowhere close to the original? If youdo that, and remove/add it, and it still shows the original image of a different name, then you'v e got some serious problems.

  • First project in CS4 and major issues with preview and such.....experienced with all previous PPRO v

So to sum it up, I have been working in Premiere since version 4.2. I am familiar with program.
I decided to test CS4 on a simple project, as I usually work on complex HD videos. I captured a friends wedding, shot by someone else (uncle or aunt) in DV mode. I open a CS4 project in DV NTSC 720x480 and import my clip. This should be a simple edit.
I drag clips to the timeline and do some very basic dissolves in and out to smooth out the rough cuts of the camera operator. So far so good. I am previewing the video out on my second monitor which happens to be an HDTV via the premiere playback to secondary monitor feature.
I drag a color correction filter onto a clip and "wham" the preview goes away. Then I turn the effect off and it comes back. When I scrub the timeline, all I see is the first frame of that clip all the way through. It's stuck. I have to build a preview to get it to play. In addition, I cannot see a preview of anything when I am makijng color adjustments except in the small monitor window of Premiere. This is basic editing 101....never had to give it a though before and now basic functionality is going haywire. Ofte images are all negative looking too.
So I started a new project in HD and setup to preview to second monitor. I created a simple title and dragged it to the timeline. It won't preview to the second monitor at all. A simple title. Only in the little premiere monitor. Then I import a jpg....same thing. I have to build a preview to see anything....
Then....I have these 2 clips on the timeline, a premiere title butted up against a jpg. With no effects, it now will not even show the title anywhere. During the five seconds of the title, I see the jpg (which is coming up next, but in a negative mode...you know reversed out basically) then when it gets to the jpg it shows. If I change the size of anything....it stops working again until I render.....
I have to say that in the 45 minutes that I have been trying Cs4, it has behaved so strangely it is scaring me. CS3 has it's quirks but they typically present themselves in huge projects, not brand new ones with 2 clips in them, neither of these are even HD video! Just a title and a jpg.
Any ideas? I have CS3 production Suite running great. Hopefully I missed a simple new setting or something. Yeah...right.
    Intel Q6600
    4GB Ram
    Nvidia 7950
    2 Terabytes of Raid Drives
    Sound Blaster Audigy Card
My system is not slow by any means.....
    thanks.

    Jim,
I have accomplished this with an ATI card also, so it can be done. I am not sure what you are trying to imply. It absolutely works. If you are implying that simply because it doesn't blank the screen out when no video is being played that it is not a true output you are wrong. Are there better more color accurate ways to do this? Sure....for thousands of dollars for SDI or HDMI cards then production grade LCDs I'm sure it could work better.
My video card outputs a 1920x1080 signal to my HDTV....that I calibrate to the best of its ability considering it is not a production monitor. When in Premiere I get full high res 1920x1080 HD video playing on this monitor looking darn close to what it will look like when rendered to Blu-ray, whereas the image on my awsome 30" Dell LCD is not accurate at all. I mean it looks clean and awesome but is not very close to an HDTV colorwise.
This absolutely works. As good as it is, it is not as accurate as dedicated equipment and color production monitors.
To be clear, it is an extension of the desktop, and premiere is able to display the entire resolution of the video over the entire thing.

  • Confused how iCloud works with Preview?

What is the point of saving PDFs in the iCloud with Preview if I cannot access those documents via my iOS devices or iCloud.com? Or can I?

To help others out there.. I too have not been able to figure out how to share iCloud Preview files across  OSX and iOS devices. Based on this post and other research I do not think it is currently possible (even with paid icloud subscriptions).
But what you can  do..with iCloud Preview  is  share files,  across Mac's (OSX muntain lion or newer, laptops and desktops)  and signed into icloud account on both Macs . Can even create sub folders for files and  not limited to PDF files can also share JPG, DOC , XLS and other files .. ( This can be  helpful since  iMac's (pre 2009 tcan not use air drop)
Perhaps apple will put a preview App out at some point to enable more seemless sharing across devices similar to DropBox which can also appear as a folder icon on the sidebar in Finder window.
(FYI - I have up to date OSX (10.8.5 mountain lion ) and iOS7 (iPhone5) as well as paid icloud and itunes match subscriptions and even icloud beta pages/numbers/keynote. )

  • Some GIFs and JPGs appearing with yellow "wash" when loading in Safari

    Hi,
I've flicked through forums, google, and called my top graphics people but nobody can seem to help, or has ever even heard of, my issue.
Here it is in a nutshell:
Some GIFs and JPGs appear with a yellow "wash" when being loaded in Safari. I can confirm this is happening on 3 different Macs, and even on a PC running Safari.
    Safari 3.1.1 on Windows XP
Safari 3.1.2 on Mac OSX 10.5.5
Here's some examples of it occurring:
    http://staging.tomatosource.com.au/test/bad.jpg
    http://staging.tomatosource.com.au/test/bad.gif
You might need to refresh the page in Safari a couple of times to see the flicker but it's there.
    I've tried:
    - resaving images with and without "progressive" and "interlaced"
    - a variety of different colour palettes
    - taking a screenshot of the image, putting back into Photoshop and resaving
Has anybody seen this issue before? Unfortunately I can't go live with this site until I fix this very strange error.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Jase.

Totally independently from your current problem, Safari is cr@p. Dump it.
All Apple applications, from the Finder through Preview and iPhoto to Safari, assign Monitor RGB to ALL untagged images, even if they were created or saved in sRGB.
The only current properly color-managed web browser is Firefox 3.0.1. Just keep in mind that you have to enable color management deep inside the guts of Firefox.

    Do a backup.
    Quit Preview.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Remove the following. You may not find them all.
