Lost 10Mbps download speed.
For some reason I have lost 10mbps download speed and my line is behaving like it used to with ADSL broadband where pages took a very long time to load.
BT speed tester:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 20 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 12 Mbps-21.68 Mbps .
Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 21.68 Mbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 5.6Mbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps
I used to get around 30-34Mbps download an it has been progressivly getting slower over the last couple of weeks.
I tested this using an ethernet cable.
Hi jimmehr, what are estimates on the Infinity checker? http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=29017&s_cid=con_FURL_...
If your estimates are under 40MB you will see no speed increase.

MSI Z87-GD65 System. Slower Download speeds since upgrade.
I've recently upgraded my PC to an MSI Z87-GD65/i5-4670K based system from an Core 2 Quad, Win 7 64x setup.
I use Usenet frequently and since upgrading i seem to have lost around 1000KB/s in download speed when maxing out my line.
Before, i used to get around 9140KB/s max download using the onboard lan port on a Gigabyte P45 based motherboard. Port on old board was a Realtek 8111C Gigabyte chip.
Now i get around 8200KB/s max download using the onboard lan port on my MSI Z87-GD65 motherboard which is the Killer E2205 chip.
I'm using the latest Lan drivers for my chip and have tried older ones but come up with the same result.
Is there an obvious reason behind this speed loss? What i'm wondering is does Windows 8.1 constantly use the network to keep the app tiles updated and if so would it account for 1000KB/s of missing speed. If so, is there a way of stopping it using the network when I'm downloading stuff?
I don't think the speed difference is due to the different chipsets because i get the same speeds using various speed tests that i did before. Also i know its not a massive amount of speed loss (it's equivalent to 8Mbps) but its annoying me.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.Hi, thanks for your reply.
My specs are as follows:-
i5-4670k
MSI Z87- GD65
16gb Crucial Elite 1866 using X.M.P
250GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD
MSI GTX770 2GB
Corsair HX850w PSU
Windows 8.1 Pro
I have no Wifi card or software installed so i'm just using the onboard ethernet.
Current download speeds shown in Speedtest.net is 74 Down 19 Up, however the Usenet speed i'm getting is around 64 Down (8200KB/s). Difference of 10Mbps. Ive checked settings on the Usenet provider side and they are correct. -
Download Speed on PIX 515E is Pretty Slow
Hello, I have a PIX 515E set up between our office switch and our Comcast Business Router and the download speeds are not as fast as they should be. We are paying for 30 down 30 up but it's more like 10 down 30 up. I plugged in a computer directly into the router and got 30/30 so I know its not a comcast issue. I think it might be the low amount of memory on the PIX because its running at 109 out of a total 128mb. The PIX has a site-to-site VPN tunnel with a remote ASA 5520 firewall. The inside/outside ports are both auto/auto. The running config is only 161 lines.
Here's some information about the PIX 515E...
Version 8.0(4)
ASDM 6.1(3)
Memory 128MB
Here is the running config..

Terrible download speed with Infinity 2 (less than...
I was a relatively early adopter of BT infinity. When I first signup I recieved a consistent 70mbps+ down 80mbps up.
Over the last few months this has dropped to around 40mbps down and 12mbps up.
I posted here regarding the issue, contacted BT, and even Emailed the tech support guys recommended here on this very forum.
Unfortunately nothing improved, however since 40mbps down was okay for almost everything I needed to do I decided to leave it.
Now however, the situation has become dire. For the last month my download speed has been consistently less than 4mbps with my upload speed being 2-3x as fast!
The BT speedtester refuses to complete due to the test taking too long. However I have managed to get a screenshot from speedtest.net.
To make matters worse, webpages down't always seem to complete, with many requests eventually timing out.
I am at a complete loss and would like some advice on where to go from here. I have for all intents and purposes lost faith in the standard BT customer service having spent hours on the phone with them before when my speed dropped to 40mbps a few months ago.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.Hi
I also am having the exact same issue. I am on the phone now and they are telling me now that is all my line can handle.
This is disgusting, the service is disgusting, cannot get an engineer out. For over 10 months i could get 60mbps steady downloads now i can't
even stream a youtube video!!
even though i have another infinity 2 line in the downstairs living room getting 65mbps steady downloads from the same exchange. -
Strange download speed / latency problem
Hi all,
I've lately been having problems with only my download speed and latency when gaming online. Sometimes I'm getting my normal full 10MB connection and other times it randomally drops down to between 0.1 and 4MB, it doesn't matter if it is peak hours or not it is very random. When I am getting my full speed all websites/gaming online work perfectly but when the speed drops even to 4MB or so everything requires constant refreshing and my gaming online becomes impossible.
I've noticed that sometimes when the phone rings the broadband will disconnect, and my upload speed appears to be unaffected.
I have tried a quiet line test and it was clear so I'm not sure what is going on.
I have tried different routers/cables/filters and have also tried restarting the router.
I read about packet loss and thought it was maybe an issue to do with that, and so when doing a pathping to BT.net i've noticed that when the speed is high and everything appears to be working I get no packet loss, but when it is slow and things don't want to load I get some (as shown below). I have no idea if this is related but I will link as much information as i can to see if it is any help.

Where's the problem: Safari/Download Speed/ISP?
My connection speed has been shaped to 64kbps and something funny is now happening to my internet other than being slow. The thing is, I can handle the slow speed; what I can't handle is the download speed dropping to zero and staying there.
I have Menu Meters showing download speed in the Toolbar so that I can monitor what's happening. What I want to know is: why does connecting to a website be progressing well at 64 kbps, then drop to 0 after a minute or two? The internet connection itself is not lost. If I stop the download with the "X" in the address bar and the restart, the speed goes up to 64kbps again. I usually have several tabs open when I am in Safari so that I can jump between them when the speed is slow. But that doesn't work when the speed is zero.
I'm pretty confident that when I am unshaped at the start of the new billing cycle, and the speed goes back up to 3 Mbps, that things will return to normal.
Q1: Is this loss of connection caused by the slow speed? i.e. is the website saying to Safari: "Hey, the connection is too slow, I'm dropping you". A bit like an aircraft flying at too low a speed. It can't keep flying, it stalls.
Q2: Is this likely to be caused by time-out? i.e. the website saying "Hey, this is taking too long. Get lost!"
Q3: Is it a problem in Safari? I'll answer that one – not likely, because Google Chrome does the same thing.
As I said, slow I can handle. What I can't handle is nothing at all. Any suggestions as to the cause of this will be most appreciated. I am running Safari 5.1.4 under OSX 10.6.8 on an Intel iMac.
P.S. I just opened Activity Monitor and saw the Google Downloads is operational. Maybe that's hogging all the download speed. That leads to two more questions.
Q4. Is it possible to stop all internet traffic except via Safari?
Q5. How do I stop Google Downloads from downloading?same problems on my systems still as well. none of the "fixes" work for me at all.
i've had to switch from safari(3.0.3) to firefox because of this.
i really would love to get back to using safari, since it's my browser of choice as well.
its going on over a month of this nonsense now. -
Observed download speed vs speed checkers
Hello everyone,
I am a new BT Unlimited Broadband customer, though I am not new to broadband nor the technical side of the internet. I have been using a BT Home Hub 4 for around a month now without disconnection problems.
We live in a new build area and thus Infinity is not available to us at the moment. Our estimated (by BT) and reported (by various speed checkers, including BT's own two) download speed is 7 - 10Mbps, usually around 8. The Home Hub reports 10.x Mbps for download.
In contrast, our observed download speed (as tested using various large sample files across several protocols) is actually consistently 1Mbps.
I'd like to draw on the collective wisdom of forum contributors and ask for advice on the following question:
Can you think of any practical reasons, assuming ideal conditions on my end, why our actual download speed would be so much less than the reported download speed?
Thanks
Solved!
Go to Solution.Run btspeedtester and post the results please
This may help with your calculations
Internet speed = Download speed
256 kbps = 31,3 KB/s
512 kbps = 62,5 KB/s
1 mbps = 122,1 KB/s
5 mbps = 610,3 KB/s
10 mbps = 1220,7 KB/s

Download speed at 125k or below for the last 2 wee...
We've been having a fair amount of grief over the last couple of weeks. We usually have a download speed of 2mb with some periods where it drops down to near-dial-up speeds. If these don't clear automatically I will force a disconnect, reboot and reconnect and hope that over a few days the exchange picks up the better connection speed.
However, about 2 weeks ago the broadband completely lost connection for about 22 hours. My wife works from home so we needed it up, even at dial-up speeds so that she could use email. I contacted the call centre in India (who weren't much use) who said they couldn't find anything wrong with the line and suggested I call the UK tecchies. Funnily enough, I had just called them up when I noticed that the broadband was back on. An amazing coincidence...
Anyway, I then did the usual - wait a day or so to see if it improves, re-set the connection so that my ADSL settings show a Downstream connection of 2000+ kbps and then wait some more for the exchange to catch up and bump my profile up to its maximum. That bump-up hasn't happened and today the connection is dropping out again, pushing my downstream connection down to 600 kbps. But for all this time we've been stuck at between 100-125k actual download speed.
I've got files I need to download, my wife has work to do from her laptop and I have 2 kids with homework projects to research. 100k is painfully slow, especially when more and more websites have flashy ads that probably load instantly on high-speed connections but take up to ten seconds for us. Why are downstream connections at exchanges allowed to fall to 100-125k, particularly when it will take DAYS to bump up (if you're lucky)? Having a minimum speed of 500k would at least allow you to work with the internet.
And why won't my connection automatically increase at the moment? If it's to do with flaky line connection, why has it deteriorated? I had an engineer out about a year ago to find out why my connection was poor at that time and it turns out there was a bit of internal wiring that was causing the blockage - the connection to my house was a reasonably strong 2mb. I haven't touched my internal wiring since we sorted it out, but every now and then the BT Broadband connection just nosedives.
Current connection status (was 2400k, dropped to 1300k, dropped to 608k just as I was accessing the forums):
Line state Connected
Connection time 0 days, 00:28:48
Downstream 608 Kbps
Upstream 448 Kbps
ADSL Settings
VPI/VCI 0/38
Type PPPoA
Modulation G.992.1 Annex A
Latency type Interleaved
Noise margin (Down/Up) 25.9 dB / 21.0 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up) 56.2 dB / 31.5 dB
Output power (Down/Up) 1.1 dBm / 1.5 dBm
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote) 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote) 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote) 0 / 0
FEC Errors (Down/Up) 6 / 4
CRC Errors (Down/Up) 84 / 34
HEC Errors (Down/Up) 71 / 43
Error Seconds (Local/Remote) 6 / 4
But my actual download/upload speeds are 125 kbps & 345 kbps (using Broadband Speed Checker rather than the BT version cos its a lot quicker when download speeds are this poor).
I live in a village a few km from the Stubton exchange in Lincs so don't expect a brilliant connection, but this is getting pretty frustrating. If any of the mods can have a look at what may be happening on the exchange (and possibly fix it) I'd be very appreciative!
Cheers
NickYes, to be honest I was a little surprised myself. But it absolutely didn't connect when plugged into the test socket (I even tried to force a connection from the Home Hub manager but it wasn't having it). It is definitely the master socket. The only extension is a small piece of (engineer installed) phone cable to link the hub and the master socket (because the socket and mains power are unhelpfully on opposite walls of the hallway).
I ran the Java download for Google anyway and it only took about an hour. The speedtester results are as follows:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 109 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :2560 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps
I don't as a rule disconnect / reboot the hub; today it has been dropping off on its own, while several days ago I tried a few reboots just to try and get a connection.
Additional info - my exchange is actually called Claypole Fenton (or vice versa). Whatever, my profile has probably been welded to 135k for days and days.
Cheers

WRT150N Slow Win 7 Download Speed
My new Windows 7 desktop and laptop both have slow download speed over wireless, about 1mbps, hard wired they both run about 10mbps. Upload they go 3mbps. My 2 yr old Vista laptop can consistently get 10mbps wireless download.
I took the windows 7 laptop to Best Buy and they were able to run 7 mbps download.
I have played with all my Wireless Router settings based on searches I have performed here without success. I'm guessing the WRT150N can't support something going on with Windows 7.
Anybody have a solution for this?
ThanksI had same prob. Found this and it worked for me. the only thing I changed were the transmission rate speeds under the advanced setting. Mine only had 130 Mbps for the wirless N setting not 162 mbps, but it worked for me. I hope it works for you. I have been messing with this prob for weeks now. Such a relief!!
Finally I have some success to write about.
After a few months of fiddling with settings and being very frustrated, I think I finally have hit upon something that appears to be working....for me, at least.
Yesterday, I talked with Linksys Support via LiveChat. They recommended that for the WRT150N router---on the Advanced Wireless Settings Tab, that I change the DTIM to 3, and the RTS Threshold and Fragementation settings to 2304.......and also change (RTS and Frag) them on the wireless card (WPC300N).
So, I did that and didn't notice any real improvement. My wireless reception--while the card says 'Excellent'--had speeds varying from 1Mbps to 216Mpbs...seemingly at random intervals.....no rhyme or reason.
Then I came across an obscure thread in some forum while Googling this topic. It recommended that you change your 'N Transmission Rate' to 162Mbps. Mine had been on AUTO, as was the regular 'Transmission Rate' for the "G" laptops on my network.
So I promptly changed both of those settings from AUTO to 54Mbps and 162Mbps respectively......and BINGO.....since I have done that, my speed from the card hasn't dropped lower than 108Mbps. It stays around 243Mbps and often will stay at 270Mbps when I am streaming something.
Don't know how long this will last, but its been the best 12 hours since I purchased the WRT150N and the WPC300N.
Hope this helps anyone else out there!
Sincerely,
Stan

HSI Enhanced - Slow download speeds
My download speed has been running slow for at least 1.5 weeks. My service is HSI enhanced. I was to receive download speeds up to 3.0 Mbps, and upload speeds of 768Kbps. When I first received the service my download speeds were 2+Mbps. Now my download speeds range from 0.45 Mbps to 0.86 Mbps. The upload speeds have been consistenly ranging from 0.69 to 0.73 Mbps. The speeds were tested using a Mac, PC (Windows 7), iPad, and an Android device. I still get the same poor results for download speeds. While in RI I was able to get upload speeds of 2+Mbps using another network. Since then I have tried two different Verizon wireless routers supplied by Verizon and still get the same poor results for download speeds. The technician indicated the speed capability tested ok at the router. However, I am now at a lost after all these years. I have always liked the quality of Verizon products. In spite of the different challenges I have had with services in the past, I am at a point where I have to decide whether to find another supplier as I am unable to perform my daily responsibilities. My setup is very basic - phone jack to router, router to computer. There is no filter on the connection between the phone jack and router.
Has anyone had a similar problem that was resolved? If so, what was the resolution? You wouldnt believe how long ive been dealing with this EXACT same issues. Almost a year now with no results. The thing with my problem is, I get fantastic speed during the early morning hours 4-5 am while i getting ready for work, but when i get home 6-7-8pm I get the .53-.79 speeds. No one seems to be able to do anything about it. Im on chat now with them....same results. Im sure a tier 2 tech will call me, Ill miss their call and that will be the end of it! (Sorry i ranted, all done now.)

Virgin 100MB vs Safari Download Speed
So...
I have a Virgin SuperHub with a 100Mb internet plan.
I'm trying to download Eve Online (7.44GB) but only reaching download speeds of 9-10Mbps.
Am I right in thinking my Virgin internet plan means I am able to download at 100Mbps?
I have checked my speed with SpeedTest.net and had 120Mbps.
I have looked in router setting for firmware upgrade but couldn't find it and all seems to be well as I'm getting the speeds on SpeedTest.net.
Is there something I can do to increase the speed with Safari?
ThanksYup. No ISP, internet provider, lists their speeds in Mega Bytes. It is always mega bits.
Just like Ethernet connections 10mb 100mb and giga bit/1000mb. Then you divide that by 8.
So all in all you have a very fast connection. Mine is only 30mb over cable. Which is much better then the 3mb DSL connection I use to have.

So Virgin's internet service is in mega bits not Bytes? That would explain my conunrdum.

SuperSlow download speeds iPad wifi
Flash *****? Waiting 4 hours to download a movie on an iPad that takes 8 minutes on an iPhone. That *****.
I agree that it is absurd for people to have to try these suggestions, but until apple comes out with an update, there are not many other choices other than for people to take matters in their own hands and try to fix the problems themselves. It's better to try and perhaps solve the problem and be happy, than to refuse to try and be miserable waiting for apple to fix. The choice, as always, is yours. FWIW, after doing what I suggested, my download speeds on my iPad are 14 Mbs with no slowdowns or lost connections.

Airport express reduces download speed by over 50%, any ideas on how to improve
My ISP provides 15MBPS download speed, which when I hook my PC direct to the modem, I get about 14-15 MBPS download speed. When I run the speed test again using the airport wireless network, the download speed drops to between 3-5MBPS. Any ideas on what I could do to improve the speed with my wireless
I actually have two Airports, one is located in our bedroom which is hooked to my modem and the other is an extention which is located in our family room. The total distance between the modem and our family room is no more than about 60 feet and there are a couple of walls between the two.
If the main AirPort is located in the bedroom and family room is approximately 60 feet away...then the "extending" AirPort should be located at an approximate mid point between the two rooms.
The way that you have things configured now, the signal from the "main" AirPort must travel all the way to the family room. It has lost a great deal of strength and speed by that point.
The AirPort in the family room can only "extend" the speed that it receives. It can make the signal go further, but it cannot make the speed go faster. Think of it as a repeater, not a booster. As it stands now, you are receiving little to no benefit from the extending AirPort in the family room.
Experiment with the location of the extending AirPort at maybe 1/2 to 2/3 the distance from the bedroom to the family room. Minimize any obstructions in the signal path as much as possible. A typical sheetrock wall will absorb 10-15% of the signal (and speed), just to give you a quick example.
Get the AirPorts up as high as possible. They should not be down low on the wall or behind anything. They need a free look into the room.
There may likely be other things that we need to do to help things along, but locating the extending device correctly will be a start. Give that a try and report on your results. -
I'm new to the video ipod. The first generation ipod is still working, and I continue to use it for audiobook downloads. I need to know if the download of 1 episode of the 2nd season of Lost, should take over 2 hours? I have DSL via AT+T/Yahoo, and I previously thought that downloads would be a fairly brisk event. What is the normal download time. Should I plan to download video from itunes to my computer overnight, to allow for such lengthy download speeds? Thanks.
To Cosmo's Dad - Do you feel that we've had our question satisfactorily answered? I don't. I get the general impression that the ipod world doesn't complain about such mundane issues as download time. I almost hated to ask, feeling that I would expose my naivete in the world of expensive, new gadgets. Well, I thought there would be different download speeds depending on the quality of the video you were willing to sacrifice. I guess not. So, I will continue to play with my new ipod, and plan video downloads to occur overnight, when all is quiet. Let me know what you decide to do. JohnnyD51.
