Lost 2006 Originals

After receiving my iMac G5 back repaired with a new hard drive, I imported my iPhoto Library from my external backup drive. Unfortunately, there are no 2006 photos (which happened to include the birth of my son...). All of the thumbnails are present, as well as any photos that were modified, but the Originals folder does not even contain a "2006" folder. The Apple Store indicated that my drive was sent out to be crushed and cannot be retrieved. Spotlight does not find these missing files anywhere, so it looks like I am out of luck.
How can all the thumbnails and modifed photos be present without the originals? Where would those photos have gone? Why is this issue only starting from 2006? (all of my photos back to 2002 are fine, with the exception of wedding photos from June 2005, which are also missing (shows the grey "!" box when you click on them) but at least I have a DVD backup of them).
It sure would be nice if the thumbnail images could have the "!" without having to double-click them. It would have been a red flag for me that something was wrong before I assumed the backup was working. I never thought to click individual photos for editing.
Ironically, there was nothing wrong with my original hard drive, after a second trip for the same issue (kernel panic on wake from sleep) the Genius' determined it was a faulty $7 cable. I would have paid a lot more than that to have my photos intact. Thanks.

Hi Michael,
That is truly a shame! I have no idea why the 2006 folder in the Originals folder would be missing.
Did you happen to upload the photos to any online photo sharing site?
Did you use those photos for an iWeb or .Mac album?
Did you send any of those photos to family and friends?
Did you make any printed copies that you could scan again?
I joined a site called ClubPhoto, though there are many others.
All my important photos are uploaded to that site. I like the site because they have a copy of my full resolution photos. I feel a little better that not only are my photos uploaded to that site, but I also have my photos on an external and copied to DVDs and my iPod.
Good luck!

  • IPhoto 9.4.1 shows only miniatures, lost the originals

    Hi all,
I had to have my hard drive changed after the last one broke down and decided to upgrade my macbook pro from snow leopard to mountain lion at the same time. Otherwise everything seems to be ok, and I got everything restored from the back ups, exept when I opened iPhoto for the first time, it complained that the library needed to be altered to work with iPhoto 9.4.1 and that after the alteration the photos could not be used with earlier versions. I clicked OK.
This took about an hour after which everything seemed normal, except that when I click a picture to see it bigger (for example full display) it shows only black with exclamation point! When looking the size of the library from Finder, it shows it to be 11Gt, whereas the original library was 149Gt. All the picture miniatures and folder etc are as before, but looks like the alteration has thrown the actual original pictures away. They might still be somewhere on the computer as the free space on the hard drive is still the same as before despite the actual library becoming noticeably smaller.
I still have the originals at the back up drive, but when I tried to import them for the second time, iPhoto gave the same notice that the pictures need to be alteredto work with 9.4.1.
If there is anyone who could help me to restore and use the pictures in their original size, I would be very grateful. All of your help is much appreciated!

The exclamation mark is an indication that the file path to the original/master image file has been broken. Try the following: make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Lost my originals, Can I salvage the lightroom copies?

Somehow I accidentally lost all my original photos from a folder on my computer. I can see them in lightroom bit lightroom cannot find them because they are gone. Is there any way to take what is being shown in lightroom and export or save them somehow? I tried export and it won;t work without the original. Any help would be awesome.

Did you check the Recycle Bin?
If they are not there, you might want to try downloading and installing and running something called an "undelete utility", which can — in certain situations — restore "deleted" files. There are freeware undelete utlity programs available.
Now would be a good time for you to begin planning your backup strategy, so you never lose photos again.

  • Lost iphoto originals file

I have somehow managed to lose the pictures from my iphoto - the albums are there and say how many pictures are in each but the pictures are represented by a grey thumbnail.
Ive tried to look in finder in show package contents but I neither have a file in there called originals or master??!! HELP - my pictures date back to 2003!

If you do not have a backup and if you do not have the original photos and if the trash has been emptied then they are gone
check the iPhoto trash and the system trash
And for the future you must alway have a good curtrent backup - without one it is only a matter of time untill you lose your files and photos - people, cpomputers and software ll make mistakes adn you need a backup as insurance
And NEVER make any changes of any sort to the structur or content of t eiPhoto library - doing so will corrupt the library

  • Image Processing in Bridge lost PSD originals HELP!

I am somewhat new to using Adobe Bridge CS4 super frequently, I have been processing batches of images mostly using the 'Image Process' function under tools>photoshop>image processing. I was using it to watermark my photos and size them down. It worked great, did everything I wanted it too and made it's own JPEG folder with all my processed images. HOWEVER I just discovered that when I process them it is somehow is taking the original image and flattening it so it looks like a JPEG even though the file still thinks it's a PSD file. The size is small and all the layers are gone, basically it looks EXACTLY like the JPEG file I'd just made but it's the original file and it's still a PSD (in theory!). I've been racking my brain trying to figure out when I'm doing wrong here! Been all over the internet trying to find a similar situation and I've had no luck. Any thoughts? I'd really appreciate the help. These particular photos are ready to go to print, but I've got my watermark on them and can't exactly remove the layer that isn't there anymore! HELP
    Oona

Yes I was converting images from PSD to JPEG with the image processing but I was running an action (within the same dialog box) to make the file sizes much smaller for easy upload to the web? Does running an action affect the original as well as the processed images?

  • Thumbnails but no originals in iPhoto library

I thought I backed up my library using time machine to an external drive but all I see are thumbnails & when I click on one a big question mark comes up instead of the full size original. I tried rebuilding the library from the external drive but now even the thumbnails are gone, even though when I search for the file it shows up in spotlight. I deleted files & then emptied the trash when my startup disc was full. Is it still possible the originals are there? How can I see where all the thumbnails are located? If I've lost the originals I'd still like to have the thumbnails all in one place. Thank you! Mac

Sorry but I have not idea what you have done
I thought I backed up my library using time machine to an external drive but all I see are thumbnails &
    What exactly does this mean
when I click on one a big question mark comes up instead of the full size original.
    Is this using iPhoto?
I tried rebuilding the library from the external drive but now even the thumbnails are gone,
Exactly what did you do? iPhoto does not rebuild from anywhere - it only will rebuild the library it is currently using
    I deleted files &
    Please explain
then emptied the trash when my startup disc was full
Again I have no idea at all of what you have done - but if you have deleted files from the iPhoto library using the finder and emptied the system trash then you library is toast and you will have to start over
Is it still possible the originals are there?
Of course - it is possible - if they are they will be in the Masters folder in your iPhoto library - right click on the iPhoto library and show package contents and look (BUT DO NOT TOUCH - NEVER make any changes to the structure or content of the iPhoto library using the finder)
How can I see where all the thumbnails are located?
They are in the previews folder - same warning as above
If I've lost the originals I'd still like to have the thumbnails all in one place.
Again not sure what you want - you can create a new library and import any image you want into it including the previews - but they are very low quality - almost unuseable

  • Iphoto lost my original files

I have several folders in iPhoto, the one in question, I have opened several times, and have edited some photos. For reason unknown, I tried to open, and enlarge a photo to full screen image to view it, and I suddenly could not. I got a warning that iPhoto could not locate the original file. I neither deleted or anything else with these files other than some editing, they are recent pics.I can still share the pics in iPhoto, but can no longer open the files to full image to view. My concern is that iPhoto lost my originals, and it could happen to my other folders. I did backup my photos, but when I redownload to iPhoto, I get the same warning of "original files lost"? What can I do to fing the originals on my MAC book, and how to prevent in the future?

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Just lost 10+years of work...Backup advice now needed

After loosing 10+ years of work from an external hdd crash + a pc hd crash both withing 10day perios, I now have a new iMac and trying to find the best backup solution PLUS syncing solution with my Macbook Pro and iPhone before picking up and with my photography. Believe me, I don't think I'll ever be the same because of this loos.
After much research, it's time for feedback from others. I have a concept diagram that I created and can be found here of what I currently looking at - this is a WIP: http://gallery.me.com/nvert#100232/backupdiagram&bgcolor=black
    Any help/advice is appreciated.
    Brad (aka nvert)

BIG thanks to each of you for your suggestions and advice and taking the time to help a bro out. Aside from a few glitches in my diagram (to redondant or out of sequence) I have a better grasp on how to approach this thanks to your input. The question I still can't really figure out is the syncing concept - how to keep my iMac and MBP synced? If both are connected to a NAS RAID setup, can it be programed to 'push' the most current file version to the other computer? Since I travel and make changes on the fly with my MBP and then refine/revise on the iMac, I'd like to find a way that does this efficiently. ay or two..
By the way, more info for everyone regarding my attempts to recover my data:
"The Accident": One evening I knocked my external HDD off the PC tower which sits under my desk on carpet. The drive fell less than 18" - all cords attached - and I'm sure that slowed the fall a bit. Either way, the drive was powered on 24/7 and most likely spinning at the time of the fall. Once I put everything back in place, the ext HDD began clicking. Immediately I shut it down and went to the forums as well as tech help from my university. The click was truly the "click of death". Because my university has a contract with DriveSavers, I sent it to them hoping for the best. After 2 levels of analysis by DS, nothing on the 320GB drive recoverable. What few items they were able to pull off the drive, even they were not able to decipher if those files were jpgs or txt files.
nd my job was willing to foot part of the bill since we already have an account with DriveSavers. I was ready to pay 2K for data recovery and work was willing to meet me part way. The sick irony of it all is that I was looking at another backup level 2 months before this happened - I just couldn't decide on what and now I have lost all originals. I have lots of work on the web but as you all know that format is limiting.
I lost great work, family pics, travel pics, SCUBA pics, published work, work to be published, writing, course+teaching materials, financial data...EVERYTHING YOU HAVE! So....
...For all of you thinking about upgrading...follow your gut and do it now before something like this happens to you. Not to be pessimistic...it will happen eventually. I'm just thankful the house didn't burn etc but loosing all that work is a bit debilitating. At least my Canon is right beside me at this moment...been the first time in over 5 weeks and usually it's always "the appendage" my friends tease me about.
Again, thanks for responding so fast to my post. I already have a MobileMe account setup up to sync my contacts, bookmarks, dock, keychains, etc. I also have it setup to keep my work related teaching docs up to date but that is done by me on a manual "when I think of it" basis. Right now, my 1st priority to to get a NAS RAID going but not sure if both the MBP and iMac should use TM or something like both of you proposed such as CarbonCopy or SuperDuper.
    Best to all,

  • Where can I download Adobe RoboHelp 9?

    Dear community,
I just changed laptop and need to re-install Adobe RoboHelp 9. However, Adobe has just released Adobe RoboHelp 10, which makes finding Adobe RoboHelp 9 for download quite difficult!
I will try RH 10 later, but for now I would like to know where I could donwload RH9 from.
Does any of you knows where I can find it?
    Thanks a lot!
    Val

You will not find it generally available on Adobe's site.
If you registered your copy, you should be able to access your Adobe account and retrieve the serial number and, I believe, download again.
If you have proof of purchase, then try Customer Support, I believe they can give you a link but I'm not sure they will issue another serial number.
Otherwise, your best chance is a software supplier who still has copies but of  course you will have to pay. Also have to pay  later to upgrade so if that route is the only one, then you may as well consider the upgrade now.
I assume you have lost the originals.

  • IPhoto Library in a mess....how to organize?

    Hi,
I have been putting this off for a couple of years, time to deal with the mess. I have the latest iPhoto 6.0.2, what I need to do is clean out all the doubles, triples and misfiled photos. I have "Modified" "Originals" and I believe they are misfiled. In my Source list I have 17.02GB on the disk, on the "Originals" file I have 8.06 and the "Modified" comes in at 7.71GB.

I wonder if simply deleating everything other than the originals might clean things up? Everyone has a pack-rat iPhoto problem, only limited my HD space. Deal with it later, later has come.
    Thanks for the help, S.

    ShakuZen:
It appears you're conversion to V6 possibly did not include all of the originals.
You're iPhoto library folder should look like this. Those year folders outside of the Originals, Modified and Data folders were left over from iPhoto 5. You can move them to the desktop and check to see if they contain any full sized image files. If so then you can assemble them in a new folder and import to get your library back to include all of your photos.
Duplicate Annihilator can cull out duplicates in an iPhoto 6 library (but not those in the carryover folders if there are duplicates in them).

  • IPhoto just destroyed my pictures.

    I feel sick.
    My workflow:
Import pics from camera using Image Capture. Browse. Use iPhoto with "Copy Items to the iPhoto Library" unchecked just for red-eye correction, enhancement, etc, then export back to original folder so I can archive the corrected pics.
Has always worked until now: after editing, the originals are simply gone. iPhoto erased them, and all that is left are the 60k thumbnail versions in the data folder. I cannot believe the idiocy behind this application.
Yes, I know. I should have backed up first, then worked on a copy.
But still. Who the h--- would design a program that destroys the data it imports?
I am erasing all traces of this sub-amateur piece of s--- from my computer.

Rather like yourself, I‘ll accept the diagnosis of iPhoto Error once it is definitively shown. For that you’ll need to replicate the event, and provide step-by-step instructions for others to do so. If you can then you’ll have made a very useful addition to our knowledge of the application.
From your Workflow, the problem arises here:
So I'll import the photo or photos with red eyes in them, with, as I said before, the preference to copy the photos to the iPhoto library unchecked...Then, corrections and edits complete...
The pics were available for editing, which means the Originals were in place.
I export from iPhoto back to the Finder.
Thing is, the files that are missing here are the Modified version, not the Original files. You’re not exporting the Originals, you’re exporting the edited versions.
Once you’ve opened the files for editing, iPhoto never refers to them again. And even if it did, it could only refer to those ones that were imported. It simply does not know about the other files at all.
So, while iPhoto may have lost the *Edited Versions* how could it also have lost the Originals?
As you know when you edit in iPhoto (and this is regardless of whether you’re running a Referenced or Managed Library) the app +opens a copy+ of the Original file and saves the changes to the Modified version in the Modified Folder.
So, again, iPhoto does not touch the Original, does not move it, delete it, overwrite it. It copies the contents into RAM, that’s all. Iphoto carries out the edits as saves them back to the disk +in another file+ entirely.
So, there’s the area in your Workflow to focus your research on.
If I might, a comment on your Workflow. And again, I stress, I offer these comments for those who may read this post in a month’s or year’s time as much as for yourself.
I’m profoundly committed to the KISS principle - Keep it Simple, er, Stewart, or something !
The problem with complex workflows is that over time, with tiredness or distractions, it’s too easy to make a fatal error. Folks don’t make errors the first time they use the workflow. The error will happen the 58th time, or the 123rd time, or the time the baby cries or the dog barks or the doorbell goes, it’s late... whatever.
You’re using three apps: Image Capture to move the files from your camera, The Finder (or something else) to browse them and iPhoto to edit them, and they are crossing over each other to manage the files, or you’re trying to prevent them managing the files. In essence, they are each claiming the same data, or trying to. Thing is, iPhoto can do all three jobs seamlessly.
A more simple version of the workflow might run like this:
Import the Pics into iPhoto (with ‘Copy Files...’ checked.) Iphoto copies the pics into the Library. View, sort and edit as you require. Now you’ve fixed your red-eye, made whatever crops you need, made edits using Photoshop or whatever external editor.
Then Export from iPhoto: If you want the Original files, use the File -> Export command, Kind: Original... If you want the edited versions plus the untouched Originals... then Kind: Current will get those. If you want both then you’re probably best just using iPhoto
Now you have your pics in the Finder, store them as you will.
Then, trash the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder. The whole thing, as a single unit. Just drag the Library to the trash and empty it. Next time you open iPhoto it’s like using it for the first time.
This way you have a single application all the way through the process until you go to store the files.
That and a dollar may buy you a cup of coffee some places.
    Regards
    TD

  • How to open 8.0 project from generated files

    Hello-
Is there a way to work from generated files in a project after it is published??  We lost the 'originals' which were on a hard drive that got zapped.  Now I am scrambling to figure out how to open it when I can't see the xpj file???
I know this has come up before - but I am having a mental block.  Will keep searching on the posts.
    Thanks for any help!!

    Hi there
Does the fact you say "generated files" mean you are left with only WebHelp or FlashHelp output? If so, the link below should help.

  • Aperture 3 Referenced Masters on a Network Drive

I purchased a Synology Disk Station as my network attached storage solution. I was hoping to have my iTunes media and my Aperture referenced masters on the RAID-enabled network drives. I have had nothing but trouble with iTunes referencing media (extremely slow) so I gave up. Now I am attempting to relocate the Aperture masters to the network drive. According to this article, http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3252 I should definitely not be moving my images to the network drive, as the drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended, but the Synology Disk Station volumes must be formatted as FAT32. Meanwhile, I did try to relocate some images. One problem I have is that if another user logs in to my iMac before me and mounts the network volume named Sally, when I log in and mount the network volume, the volume name is not the same, it is Sally-1, and Aperture cannot find the referenced masters! I imagine this would happen with any network drive when multiple users are logged into the Imac.
It seems like I have a gigantic network brick that I may be able to use as a glorified Time Machine backup drive, or is there something I can do about this? How does one have networked Mac OS drives? Connecting a drive to an Airport Extreme the only way?

    Re iPhoto on a NAS:
    Still trying to solve this.
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos. Simply a NAS is not a suitable home for an iPhoto Library.
Workaround: Make a dmg formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and put the Library on that and store it on the NAS.
I think I have to mirror the iTunes solution above,
This involves having iPhoto reference the files on the NAS with the Library on your internal HD or some other volume. I strongly suggest that you don't do that. Unlike Aperture, iPhoto has no tools to reconnect with lost masters (Originals in iPhoto) so should anything go wrong you'll find yourself re-connecting each individual photo in the Library with its Original +one by one+.
but figure out which folders to move
You would need to recreate your Library as a Referenced Library.
    Regards

  • Thumbnails, but no pictures? A possible colour profile solution

Pics scanned in to iPhoto using my Minolta Scan Dual IV appeared as thumbnails, but when loading appeared as empty grey boxes surrounded by white dotted lines.
Once I removed the embedded scanner colour profile (sRGB) using Photoshop, the pics appeared as normal.
I hope this helps others who are suffering from missing pics.

  • Can I make a backup copy of my progam CD's

    Dear Board Members,
Can I make backup CD's of my programs such as Office 2004 for MAC as long as I copy the license codes and passwords for them.
Could I then reinstall if I lost the originals or if they were stolen or destroyed?
    Thanks,
    B3
Mac Pro, MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

the easy answer is YES. If you have a copy of Toast, you can use the "copy" function and it will make an exact duplicate of the disk.
    Hope that helps
