  • MPEG Streamclip rip - codec for FCE + QT viewing on Mac AND PC?

Based on the helpful advice of this forum, I am ripping a bunch of DVD's of home movies into a large number of discrete .mov files that I can (1) import into FCE for editing and (2) view directly and effortlessly using QT on both a Mac AND a PC (I want to send these files to others). Maintaining image quality is very important given the less than perfect MPEG 2 source material.
I am following the suggested process using MPEG STREAMCLIP, including trimming and light cutting of unwanted sections before creation of each file.
My question is what is the best export process and settings for my situation?. Given the less than ideal quality of the MPEG-2 source, I would like to avoid further degradation if possible. Choices:
    1. EXPORT to .mov using AIC codec -- clearly the best choice for editing and QT playback on a MAC -- but unable to playback using QT on a PC without buying/loading the AIC software. This is a problem since I want the ability to give the .mov files to others and allow them play on a PC without instructions or the hassle of a software download.
    2. EXPORT to .mov with another Codec -- but which CODEC? --which codec allows effortless playback with QT/ MAC and PC while retaining original MPEG-2 quality -- and allows for later editing in FCE?
    3. SAVE AS .mov -- my understanding is that this copies the original MPEG-2 (after trimming and cuts) and eliminates transcoding. Is this accurate? If so, will it play effortlessly on a MAC and PC? Am I sacrificing anything when importing into FCE (other than the need to transcode from MPEG-2 into AIC)
Thanks in advance for the help.

Martin, I Exported my rip using MPEGstreamclip DV/DVCPRO-NTSC full quality, then exported QT Movie out of FC after editing a bit. Put it back to DVD using DVDSP and used Compressor due to tutorials I watched from Larry Jordon, saying I would get a better quality compression using compressor. I know you are probably scratching your head at this point saying, wait, FCE doesn't come with Compressor or DVDSP. At this time I'll have to admit, I have FCstudio but started out with Express and like the FCE forum better then the FC forum.
The setting in compressor I used are:
    Name: MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass
Description: Fits up to 90 minutes of video with Dolby Digital audio at 192 Kbps or 60 minutes with AIFF audio on a DVD-5

    Type: MPEG-2 video elementary stream
    Usage:SD DVD

    Pixel aspect ratio: Default
    Crop: None

  • Missing codec in FCE

I'm new to Apple and FCE. I'm trying to load files from a Sony z7 that were previously loaded into a FCP system. The files are quicktime files 1440 x 1080. I get the audio but only a white screen and when I drop it to the timeline I get a message that a codec is missing. How do I find out which codec I need and then load it into FCE.
    Thanks for any help.
    Bill Reagan

    Welcome to the forum!
Most likely they were ingested/captured and transcoded to ProRes (the codec) in FCP. This codec is not available to people using only FCE, the codec is installed when you install Final Cut Studio. You will not be able to edit those files in FCE, or convert them on that computer.
The best thing you can hope to do is one of the following:
    1. Get someone who has FCP and the ProRes codec to convert the files first to Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC)...
    or:
    2. Get the person who originally captured/ingested these files to recapture/reingest them using AIC transcoding instead of ProRes.
Your computer will not be able to play or transcode ProRes encoded files.

  • Premiere Pro Update 7.2.1 has lost Video Codec

When I'm Exporting a video the option for Video Codec Tap under the Export Settings has been removed with the new Update, on the 19th December 2013. Can anyone help tell me how I can export my video as a 1080p ProRes 422 (HQ).
    Thanks
    WilliamAplin

for all interested - i solved the problem.
after a few tryouts the system kept spitting out this error: "Adobe QT32server.exe The program can't start becaue MSVCP80.dll is missing"
this got solved by reinstalling the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 4.
with the error message gone nothing really changed - premiere pro CC insisted on not reading prores files while still reading dnxhd files from the black magic cinema camera.
i reinstalled the whole CC suite - same situation.
last but ot least i tried to uninstall anything with an apple logo on it - just to find out that you can not remove all of the components entirely without using 3rd party tools.
after that i reinstalled the prores decoder 1.0 along with the latest quicktime version (7.7.5).
    voilá.

  • Lost serial Number for FCE 2

I have the disc, The app is installed on my comp, but I have lost the serial number to 'reinstall' after an upgrade to OS 10.5.8.
When I upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.5.8, I thought it only upgraded the system - but no it wiped: Mail, Pics, iTunes and a host of apps. which I am slowly trying to re-install.
I'm looking for the Serial number of my Final Cut Express 2 - I cannot find a FCE2 community - Is there a way to retrieve the number ?

    Thank you David.
I regret having upgraded at all with the grief it's given me in apps that are 'dead'. Losing all my Mail, ditto iTunes 1000 numbrs - Playlists and Pictures - 30000.
Lucky I had pic backups and all my tunes are on CD.
Silly me I thought that upgrades only upgraded the system didn't realise that it wiped the system clean.
Luckily my eMac cannot upgrade any higher so I will not have to worry about reloading all my apps with a next upgrade.

  • 2nd audio track at 12-bit lost when importing into FCE?

I have got some DV-tapes with finalised movies which I would like to import into FCE for a) applying some enhancements and b) then burning them onto DVD. These movies once were created with FCE but after they had been exported to DV-tape (in 12-bit manner) some additional audio was added, directly via camcorder. The issue which I have got now is that although I can easily re-import these movies into FCE, the additional audio does not appear in FCE. Also, when directly checking the imported files in FCE's Capture Scratch by using the Quicktime Player the additional audio is not there.
I tried importing into iMovie and here (as opposed to FCE) the complete audio is available, both the audio originally composed via FCE and the additional audio which has been added afterwards via camcorder. Unfortunately iMovie will crash multiple times at importing due to the large number of individual clips, btw this is the reason why I once had to give up working with iMovie and bought FCE.
Anybody has an idea how I can import into FCE the movies along with the entire audio, or is this a weak point in FCE? In case of the latter, anybody has an idea for a workaround?

"Do you have an idea how to fumble out the 2nd audio pair at a Sony TVR900 i.e. how to proceed corresponding to your advice "configure the camera to ouput the second stereo pair to another DV camera with it's audio set to match the existing"? Or did I misunderstand your advice? The user manual of the Sony camcorder is ridiculously poor.."
The user manual of course is the best (should be) place to go for info on how to operate your camera. Might be one of those direct to English translations.
My idea is to use a camera that can access the 2nd stereo pair seperately. Then dub to another camera. Usually this is done via a switch or menu system.
That's where that camera manual comes (should) in handy. Also, some cameras allow you to MIX the four tracks, if this feature is available, you could dub the MIXED audio (all four tracks) to another camera.
"e.g. iMovie (provided it does not crash)? Because then I could capture the missing audio pair 2 like that in a separated manner and import it into FCE?"
iMovie to FCE is not my first choice as the importing is accompanied with quirks of all sorts, the audio is multiplexed with the video, the audio will always need to be rendered as well. Use it as a last resort IMO.
I have have heard of third party applications that can do this job, sorry, can't recall the details.

  • Codecs and sequence settings in FCE

    Hello.
I'm making a video for a local theater. All of the video is coming straight out of Adobe After Effects render queue. I've been having some issues however.
The default codec out of quicktime is the animation codec. Which produces a good quality image. However the preset codec in FCE is the DV/DVC Pro codec. So when i add it it squishes the video and makes me render it, it just looks bad (the video is 16:9). I changed the codec in AAE to the DV/DVCPRO codec, and it worked, as in it kept the aspect ratio and didn't require a render), however the quality kind of *****. I tried to change the sequence settings in the Easy Setup to match something else (like animation or the proress codec) that AAE can export out of the render queue, but none of these exist, unless i'm overlooking something.
So my dilemma is that i can't get a good quality codec to match up between the programs. The only one that works DV/DVCPRO has less than desirable quality. I always thought that FC was supposed to adjust its sequence to the first clip added, maybe that is only for FCP..
regardless, some advice would be appreciated!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
FCE is limited to 2 video codec family: DV/DVCPRO for standard definition and Apple Intermediate codec for HD.
Animation codec in million+ color is the best quality you can get fron AE. But resulting movie have to be rendered when inserted in FCE timeline as FCE cannot use animation codec natively.
FCP allow editing in many more codec than FCE.
How do you want to distribute your movie in theater ?

  • Image quality in FCE: Not as sharp as it should be...

Hi, I'm getting in the queue with those who are having troubles with the output of FCE.
I'm doing a simple DVD editing, by cutting the beginning and the ending titles and keeping the mid content.
I extracted the VOB files from the DVD and converted them in QT format with the result being as nice and sharp as it is on the DVD.
The final output is 768x576, H. 264, Integer (Big Endian), 25 fps, total BR 6,480.
I put it in a FCE new project, where it has the same properties, but the sequence that contains it, for some reasons are 1280x720, Apple Int. Codec, 29,97 fps.
I added a new beginning and ending titles in separate sequences in FCE, with a png image and some generated text, but the quality and the sharpness of the final export are not even close to the original.
I know the original editor for the DVD personally and I know he works on Windows based machines, so no FC there.
    In this picture:
    http://www.jcmonteromultimedia.com/jcmm/download/FCEcomparison.png
on the left is the original footage, very clear and sharp, on the right my own graphics done in FCE, with the .png logo and the added text, very low quality.
Any help on this issue will be much appreciated!
    Thanks.
    JC

768x576 is what? That's square pixel PAL. What is that? It's completely non-standard. And why H.264? That's a delivery codec not a production codec.
FCE only works with DV and HDV using the Apple Intermediate Codec. If you're converting PAL material from DVD you convert it to QuickTime using the DV PAL codec at the standard frame size 720x576. Any material created in a video editing application is in a format designed for display on a television set. You must assess the rendered output on a video monitor. You cannot assess it on a computer monitor. It is not designed for display on a computer monitor. If you are looking at it in on a computer monitor in the QuickTime player you must make sure it is set to high quality playback.

  • Does FCE compress HD video?

I'm working on some projects shot on a Canon HV20. A friend of mine who uses FCP said FCE doesn't compress HD video so it will consume more drive space than it would using FCP. Can anyone shed some light on this? I wasn't successful finding any info on this in the discussions.

You may wish to search this forum for the differences between FCE and FCP. It's been asked plenty of times.
In short, FCE and PRO are very similar with the later having more options and works with a larger variety of codecs.
FCE is DV, HDV and AVCHD only at fixed resolutions. Anything you learn in FCE is useable in Pro if you decide on that later.

  • Video Codec

I'm attempting to create a sports 'highlight DVD'. I've converted some old video from VHS to digital format using my Canopus ADVC-100 converter and all is fine.
I now need to obtain other video that has already been recorded to DVD-R's by a friend of mine who no longer has the original DV tapes. Is there an easy way to retrieve the footage needed from the DVD's?? I've been able to do it using software (MactheRipper) but that creates files with .VOB extensions with FCE apparently doesn't import/read. I've tried converting the .VOB files to .MOV files using ffMpegX. The resulting .MOV files, when imported into FCE, appear to have wavy lines thru it and isn't clear when played in the Canvas. When played in the Viewer, it's very choppy. Is it because of the type of file or is this just the way FCE displays the video.
What codec does FCE use when converting video from a DV converter? How come the converted files do not have an extension (at least one that I can find)?
Should I be converting to something other than .MOV files in ffMpegX?
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

I'd suggest hooking up a DV camera to the DVD player and making a copy to DV tape. Then use the camera to capture to FCE in the usual way. You will have timecode, compatability and a back up. Use the S-VHS connections if possible to maximize quality.

  • Lost registration

I have NO idea where to go on this, so I thought I would try here. I lost my registration for FCE. I have the receipt of purchase from the Apple Store sent via email. Any ideas on what to do?

I have poured over the support pages and I can't even tell which number I am supposed to call. Maybe I will just take a trip down to the Apple Store and bug them for an answer.

  • Using iDVD Media in FCE HD

I've shot a number of videos in FCE HD in various formats and created an iDVD for each.  My original tape and materials related to these videos are long gone.  How can I new take a DVD created in iDVD and convert it so it is usable in FCE HD without rendering?  Thanks for your help.

You can convert the DVD video back to QuickTime for editing in FCE (or even iMovie, for that matter).
You will need MPEG Streamclip (free) + QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component ($19.99, Apple Online Store).  You need both.  This is the easiest way to convert the video and it will yield the highest quality.
    - If your videos are 4:3 aspect ratio, I suggest converting to QuickTime/Apple DV-DVCPRO NTSC (assuming you are in North America, if you are in Europe, then convert to QT/Apple DV-PAL)
    - If your videos are 16:9 aspect ratio, I suggest converting to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec
In FCE, make sure to select a corresponding Easy Setup and create a new Sequence before importing the converted video files.  If you do the conversion properly and set FCE accordingly, you won't have any rendering issues.

  • What format/codec to post web videos?

At work they want to post videos we produce on our web site. They will range from a minute to an hour or more. We have heard pitches from companies that do all the work for us, all we have to do is upload the files and provide an interface on our web site. Viewers will not have to install player software, it will just "work" like YouTube.
But of course, the suits decided that was a bad idea, and we will be compressing the files ourselves and hosting it on some server space that comes in at the lowest bid. Our potential viewers will probably not be web savvy, and may be reluctant to download new player software or plugins. Few of our employees even know what the word codec means, and have begun happily compressing files using random settings, and not concerned about quality. (They are also not concerned that they are shooting stuff on HD cameras in 16:9 and using it in 4:3 projects, and people look really skinny).
My question is, what file format/codec to use? We are mostly editing on Final Cut Express or Final Cut Studio (with Compressor). Perhaps we should do it "Wild West" style, and let everybody compress their programs their own way, maybe different every time they do something? That way, the home computer user is bound to find at least one video that will play on their computer.
    Sigh!

FCE and FCpro are both editors, no converter tools.. allthough they allow to use the QT-engine to create a few codecs..
I would consider flv as a 'standard', by sheer market power of youtube.
but that is no codec in FCE's options .
my workflow, in 10.6. would be:
in FCE: Export QT movie (not QT compression!)
    open that file with QT_X
    choose upload to YT
use 'embbed'-code offered by YT on my site..
.. perhaps, that is too simple..
with FCE you have NO option, to generate a 'web video'; any export needs Quicktime on end-user's side.. FCE doesn't offer flash-video as option.. you need 3rd party apps for that, plus some skills to integrate into a webside, resp. set-up some 'video server' ..
Compressor allows flv as export. still, integration into 'web' unanswered ..
1h webvideo? phpheewww ... that asks for 'streaming video' ..

  • Opening FCE 4 project in FCP 7? Is it possible?

    Hi All
I am on the verge of buying FCE 4 to rough-cut a doc project that will likely end up being finished on FCP. Budget is tight at the moment and my current 'field' machine is too slow to run FCP 7 properly.
I know that FCE cannot export an edit decision list, but that FCE 4 projects can be opened in FCP 6, according to Tom Wolsky (see http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/995580).
I assumed that FCE 4 projects could thus be opened in FCP 7 -- but this website http://www.answers.com/topic/final-cut-pro says that FCE 4 is NOT compatible with FCP 7.
Can anyone advise on this? Is it possible to rough-cut a project in Apple Intermediate Codec in FCE 4 and then open this project in FCP 7, re-import footage as ProRes, and finish?
I look forward to your responses!
    Adam Welz

    Hi Tom
I've split this question into two parts:
    A) I'm not entirely sure what the implications of FCE 4 losing 'all timecode' when converting (in this case AVCCAM .mts) files to AIC on import are. Apparently the original timecode is still there -- it's just not visible unless you use a filter like FCE Timecode Display (http://web.mac.com/piero.fiorani/PieroFFCE_Effect/TimecodeDisplay.html).
I'm on a steep learning curve here, so please excuse me if I sound a bit dumb, but does the fact that AIC 'loses timecode' mean that if I open an FCE 4 project file in FCP 7 and try to re-capture media (and convert to ProRes while recapturing) from my original AVCCAM files using FCP 7, that FCP 7 will not know where to find the clips to re-capture?
    B) I'm also not sure what you mean by capturing media as DV anamorphic downconverted to retain timecode. Presumably this does not apply to AVCHD footage, as you have indicated elsewhere in this forum (and chapter 16 of the FCE users manual says) that the only transcode (ingest) option with FCE is to convert AVCHD footage (including AVCCAM footage) to full-size AIC? Please clarify.
    Thanks for all your help!
    Adam
