Lost a portion of my iTunes library

I had recently turned on Family Sharing and without doing anything gained about 1,700 songs in my iTunes library. I subsequently added some music via CD. I then turned off Family Sharing and have just recently noticed that the 1,700 songs are now gone along with the songs that I added via CD. I turned off FS because I didn't want to continually receive updates to our library that I didn't want. Is this all related to Family Sharing or do I have another issue?

I had the same problem except my dad deleted my songs and i lost 100 of them. I saw on the internet at yahoo answers that if you buy or download some software it will take the songs off your ipod and put it back on your itunes. i saw one that was 30 dollars and one that was free you just downloaded it but was worried it might come with viruses or something. You can try this if you want but so far i haven't found any other way. i even deleted my itunes and reinstalled it but it didn't work. sorry if this doesn't help.

I have suddenly lost the whole of my iTunes library, with the exception of music that I have bought and downloaded from iTunes Store.  It was all there yesterday and I haven't altered anything, as far as I know!  I hope it's something quite simple?
Apologies, but none of the communities listed seems to fit this question - so I'm taking pot luck!

For music that you've purchased from Apple that are on your iPhone you should be able to copy to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases. Also if you are in the US then you should be able to re-download past music purchases for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
For your own music that you've copied, then if you haven't got a backup on, for example, external drives or CDs/DVDs then you could see if any of the utilities mentioned in this old post still exist and work

  • TS1474 Lost several albums *completely* from iTunes library AND iPod-HELP

Sooo I had been using my laptop for iTunes purchases, management, etc., and then the thing crashed and has never been revived. I decided to begin using the desktop computer to access iTunes instead, and in the process of syncing a new purchase to my iPod, somehow inadvertently lost several older albums that I had purchased earlier. Now when viewing my library on either iPod or iTunes library on desktop computer, they do not appear to be present. Are they truly gone? All that money spent..poof? Please advise!

You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
It appears that the mess resulted in the iPod seeing the computer/iTunes library as a new computer/iTunes library. If you sync to a new computer your iPod gets erased and the media in the iTunes library ends up on the iPod.

  • I have lost the contents of my iTunes library.

I have lost the entire contents of my iTunes Library, with the exception of music bought and downloaded from the iTunes Store.  Any ideas please?

This forum is for questions from those managing sites on iTunes U, Apple's service for colleges and universities to post educational material in the iTunes Store. You'll be most likely to get help with this issue if you ask in the general iTunes for Windows forum.

  • Because of a PC problem I have lost all my music from iTunes Library.  All my music is still on my Nano (1st generation).  How can I safely transfer my music into my library, I don't want to risk losing it.

Because of a PC problem, I have lost the entire contents of my iTunes Library.  I still have all my music on my Nano (1st generation).  Is there a way of safely transferring my music from my Nano into iTunes Library.  I would hate to lose it all.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer is based on you maintaining your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will probably have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • I seem to have lost "list view" for my iTunes library.  The option doen't even appear on the view drop down.  Any conncection to iCloud?

I seem to have lost the ability to select list view for my iTunes library.  The choice for lst view doesn't even appear on the drop down when selectiogn "view".  Any ideas?  I recently enabled the cloud and subscribed to iTunes Match/  Any connection?  Thanks/

See this thread for background on why iTunes can end up with duplicates and how they can be systematically removed. The script there is for Windows users and the "show duplicates" menus have moved around in iTunes 11,  but the advice on clearing recently made duplicates should still hold.
As given in my older post "Reorganize library" is meant as a one time command to change the structure of a pre-iTunes 9 library into the newer layout that places music in its own subfolder of the media folder. Once used, if the option becomes available again that suggests that a file called .iTunes Preferences.plist in the media folder has been deleted or editied.

  • Lost my changes in my itunes library

I made some changes (groupings) in my itunes library on my hard drive and then turned on the icloud and when I returned my changes were gone, how do I incorporate those changes to the icloud?

I think I have the same problem. I have iTouch 2g that locked up. I did a restore/update and it completed successfully. When it synced, it only synced the apps, none of the tunes. I deleted the sync history, same thing. It appears to complete the sync, but not a single song is loaded.
    Help please!

  • **HELP**how to transfer "lost" music from computer to iTunes library

HELP *_Problem #1_* I deleted old files. Apparently I deleted too much. I restored the CDs from the recycle bin, but now I can't find where that music is located on my computer. *_Problem #2_* Once I find the music from the CDs how do I add it back into my iTunes library. (Problem is that I don't have some of the CDs anymore!!!)

When you locate the files you can put them into your library by hitting the file drop down menu and selecting Add file to library or add folder to library. You can then browse for the files and download them into itunes.

  • I lost my iTunes library?

(Apologies if I'm posting this in the wrong forum.)
First off, I have a Macbook 6.1, version 10.6.8. and iTunes version 11.4 (18). Originally, I was attempting to put my iTunes library onto my external hard drive to save space on my computer. Here are the steps that I took:
1.) I made a copy of what I thought was my iTunes library. My iTunes library somehow is a "Previous iTunes Library" (which happened maybe 3 years ago, but I don't remember how), and in Finder there were multiple items called "iTunes Library (various dates)" so I picked the one that looked like the most current date. However, I have reason to believe I chose the wrong file, which I will explain later.
2.) After copying what I thought was my current iTunes library, I put it on my external hard drive. To make sure that the one stored on my external hard drive opened each time I used it, I held down alt/option when launching iTunes and clicked on the one I copied (I knew it was the copied one because I changed its name to  "iTunes Libraries Copy"). However, when I opened this copied iTunes, I realized it was the wrong one (a previous iTunes library with only about a third of my music).
So my current problem is that I can't locate where my current iTunes library is. It's got got to the point that I just confused myself so badly that I've just kept the old iTunes as the one that opens. If at all possible I would like to find the iTunes library that I had before this whole mess happened. I've tried opening all the files called "Previous iTunes Libraries" in Finder and none of them are the right ones somehow. Essentially, I lost the file of the iTunes library that I want, and I want to find it again.
Also, if this matters, I still have the iTunes library I want on my iPod touch (because I haven't synced it). Additionally, I had backed up my computer (including, I assume, the iTunes library I want?) using Time Machine, but I'm  fairly new to that and I'm not sure how to retrieve it. Whatever is the simplest method to get my iTunes library back would be great! I'm trying to free up space on my Macbook so I can purchase a Macbook Air and transfer all my stuff (minus the stuff that takes up way to much space, such as iTunes). I realize this is quite confusing, but I would appreciate any help I can get!

Well, put it this way, this is what you should have done: Moving a library: Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its sub-folders and files) intact to the other drive. Hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) and open iTunes. At the prompt to create or choose a library choose the copied iTunes folder.

  • My computor crashed. All my songs in my itunes library were lost. After I restarted my computor, I started a new library with new itune songs. When I tried to download them on my iphone, itunes wanted to get rid of my old songs on my iphone. What can I do

My computor crashed. I lost my music from my itune library. After I restarted my computor to work again, I started a new itune library with new songs. When I tried to download my new songs to my iphone, itunes said it had to erase all my old songs in order to install the new songs. Is there a way to install new songs without getting rid of my old songs?

That is the way the iphone works.
You need to copy everything from your backup copy of your computer.

  • Lost Access to iTunes Library

    Hi
I have lost access to my previous Itunes Library.... If this topic is already covered please point me to the thread as I searched under various Library posts and they are all either to do with backing up to an external HD, transferring to a new PC, restoring from an iPod or iPad, or repairing corrupted files....  but not how to recover from basic stupidity and operator error! I’m a beginner as you will see!
I was trying to load some movies from my PC onto my iPhone4  to watch on vacation.... to free up space I first removed most of my music and Apps from the iPhone by unchecking the boxes and syncing to make room.... intending to restore them on my return.  Next I tried (but failed) to work out how or where to copy the movies from my PC to iTunes so as to be able to sync them to the phone. There was a Tab called “Films” but this only had some of my camcorder clips and I could not find how to load my movies into it. I mistakenly thought (I now realise) that I should try creating a new “Library” – which I would call “Movies” – to which I might be able to copy my movies to then sync to my iPhone.  I guess I was confused as to what a “Library” was.... !
So I followed the instructions to create a new Library:  Shift key –  iTunes –  “Create New Library” – called it “Movies” and OK. It worked as when I now open iTunes the interface is called “Movies” - but of course it is empty.  However this is now the default Library that opens and I cannot find my previous iTunes library with my music, Apps and Playlists.  I looked in MyMusic and can see the new (empty) “Movies” Library listed....  and another under “iTunes/Previous iTunes Libraries” where there are 19 Libraries listed by date from 2006 onwards – the most recent being two months ago. When I open them they are all called “Movies” and the  Playlists are the default ones – not my personal ones.    I can see all my Apps listed separately under “Mobile Applications” so they are all still there.... I can see the .itl and .ixl files - but when I open them they are both showing the new empty Movies Library.
So where has my previous and most recent Library ("John's Library") with all my old Playlists, Apps etc gone?  How can I find and restore it as the default Library that opens – instead of my new “Movies” one ? I tried Shift/open iTunes/Choose Library but it is not listed. (In my new (empty) “Movies” Library under Edit/Preferences/General I can see details for configuring “John’s Library” but no way to access the data)
And – when I do -  what SHOULD I have done to get my movies onto my iPhone – and is it to “Films”?!!!! I have iTunes 10.6.1.7 on a PC with W7.
    Thanks!

Double-clicking on an itl file simply opens the last library iTunes was opened with. To change back to your original library you need to use the shift-start-iTunes method, then browse to the correct folder and file.
Under Edit > Preferences > General tab change your language from English UK to English US, then close and reopen iTunes, to have the sections of your library change to Movies and TV Shows instead of Films and TV Programmes. (That particular bit of localisation is a silly idea if you ask me.)

  • /itunes library and /itunes library.xml move

Is it possible to move these files into the location where the actual music resides? Or does itunes always need these on the local drive where it is running? If it must be on the local drive, can I backup these 2 files and restore them without corrupting the database?

This may be already implied but what I want to do is have some portions of my iTunes library in one location (on another drive) and other portions elsewhere. For example I want my music on my laptop for portability but I want my big space hog stuff like movies and tv shows and video podcasts on an external volume. Is it possible to locate TV Shows and Podcasts on another drive? how about a remote drive across a LAN? Does this method work for this?
