Help I have 'lost' my downloads icon from the dock on my desktop Mac. Can I retrieve it? If so please describe how, using simple terms. I have tried searching folders, finder and trash

Your Downloads folder should be in your Home folder. Just drag it to the Dock.
If you've managed to delete it, try creating a new folder called 'Downloads'. You will probably need to nominate it in Safari or any other browser preferences as your download destination. (Safari Preferences>General, 'Save downloaded items to:' menu)

  • Since downloading spotify trial (one month), i seem to have lost itunes and my music from my dock. how do i bring my music back

Since downloading Spotify app (trial for 1 month), i seem to have lost itunes from my dock, including my music. How do i bring it & all my music back. the last time i saved it to my hard drive was 3 months ago.

If you start iTunes from Launchpad or Applications. It will Show the icon on the desktop. Right mouse click select Options and Keep in Dock.
When you say your music has dissapeared is it removed from your hard drive?
username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music is the path to my music on the local hard drive?
If it is missing from itunes then redrag the Music folder back into iTunes and your music should reappear.
Or did you mean something else?

  • I lost my download icon from my dock. How do I get it back?

I lost my download icon from my dock. How do I get it back?
    Thanks.

It was tricky, because one should click on finder itself, not finder preferences, where the download icon is actually movable. So I was able to move the icon down to the dock.
But now it doesn't have the same view as before. Now it looks like a folder with downloaded files in alphabetical order. Before it was showing the latest downloads in the way the Mac computers only do, the curved way (can't describe it). Anyone knows how to bring that back?

  • I have lost Safari and Dashboard from my docks.

Help.  I have lost the Safari and Dashboard icon from the docking area.

Go to Applications, drag the Safari application to the Dock and the icon will reappear...same for Dashboard.

  • I've lost my downloads stack from the dock, can I reinstate it?

Not long after buying my lovely new Mac desktop, I somehow managed to remove the downloads stack from the dock and I'd like to reinstate it.  I've also noticed I have lots of things in the dock that I never use (the guitar thing GarageBand for instance!) but am loathe to lift this into the trash in case I lose it forever and, who knows, maybe I might want to play with it sometime? (when I'm more confident!)
I've just stumbled upon this site and it looks brilliant, so any help would be great.  Also, I don't know what OS I've got - how could I discover that (the computer is almost a year old)?  And is there a tutorial on the Finder, which looks like it must be very useful, but I've no idea what for!
Thanks from an Ageing Mac Virgin!

items in the dock are just aliases. removing them from the dock won't delete the actual application. right-click on an item in the dock and choose options > remove from dock or just drag them off.
as for your downloads folder, open a finder window and click on the house icon with your name next to it. find the downloads folder and drag it to the right of the divider line in the dock.
you can find out which OS you're running by clicking on the  icon in the menu bar and selecting about this Mac.
the finder is for the Mac what windows explorer is for that other OS:
    Mac 101: The Finder
Mac OS X v10.6: Mac 101 - Finder and the desktop

  • How can I create a virtual keyboard shortcut in my dock?

So I started using my MacBook Pro as a device I connect to my TV. I have an HDMI adapter, and, after setting up the display and sound, it is awesome! I even purchased a Trackpad so I can sit on my couch and navigate. The cost of the adapter and Trackpad are more than paid for with my canceling of cable.
Anyway, my question is about the virtual keyboard in OS X. It doesn't happen often, but I sometimes have to type in a user name or password for sites. I know how to go through "System Preferences", "Universal Access", and then "Keyboard Preferences" to turn it on, but is there a faster way?
What I really want to know is if I can create a shortcut in my dock for the virtual keyboard?
If not, does anyone know of any third party, virtual keyboard applications that would work this way?
    Thanks!

    @ KA-BOOM!!
    Okay, try this:
    1. Copy KeyboardViewer.app to your Applications folder (or wherever you want it).
    2. Edit this copied KeyboardViewer.app bundle with TextWrangler or a comparable text editor or a property list editor, changing a single character in KeyboardViewer.app/Contents/Info.plist so that the value for NSUIElement is 0 instead of 1.
    3. Drag the new KeyboardViewer.app to the Dock.
When you want to quit the application, do so from the Dock icon.  (If you click the red button--the usual way to quit KeyboardViewer when it has been invoked from the menu extra--the application will keep running facelessly in the background and you won't be able to get the KeyboardViewer GUI back again unless you kill its process or restart.  All in all, quitting from the Dock icon is the quickest solution.)

  • Lost mail messages from inbox and drafts

I have lost all my previous inbox messages and drafts after resetting my account in Mail Preferences after a server problem. Is it because I may have renamed my account? I can't remember what I called my POP account before.
How do I recover my inbox messages or my old 'account' name.(Will that make them reappear?)
Have deleted messages from server so can't go back to there.
Problem started when someone sent me a huge music file which filled up everything.
It's driving I mad! Is there any help out there? Thanks. TW

  • How do I restore a folder deleted from my dock with TM

Being a new Mac person, I made a critical error. I dragged a folder with all my doc's in it onto the "The dock". The folder still remained on the screen under my Macintosh HD icon. I opened files from both folders so I deleted the one from my home screen. I kept using the folder from my dock without a problem. I decided to empty my trash and had to use the "option" button since it was saying the files were locked (should have taken that as a hint). When it finally deleted it, it deleted my folder from my dock, so now all i have is a "?" with the folder name. I searched and searched in TM for the folder and cannot find it. All I want to do is restore my computer to an earlier time so I can taee that folder out of the garbage. Can I do that? And do I have to reboot the computer with the boot disk in and tell it to restore from TM?

It should be on your backup. Look in "Documents" folder in TM screen You should not have to reboot or use your disk. You should not have to remove anything from Trash. Choose the file in TM and them "restore" by clicking on the "restore" button.
EDIT: All items in your Dock are aliases, so you trahsed the original which generated the "?" because it lost it's link.

  • How can I get to home screen from car dock menu when an app is running?

Just upgraded to the RAZR MAXX from a Droid 2 Global.
When the phone is mounted in the car dock and an app is running (Navi, Music, etc.), how can you get to the main home screen of the phone rather than the car dock menu?
    Follow me......
    * Phone is mounted in Car Dock.
    * If there are NO apps running, pressing the BACK key from within the Car Dock Menu takes you directly to the Home screen.
    However.....
    * Phone is mounted in Car Dock.
    * Navigation(or any app, for that matter) is running.
    * Pressing MENU key takes me to Car Dock Menu.
    * There's no exit option available to exit from car dock menu.
    * Pressing BACK key takes you back to the app that's running, not the home screen.
    * Long press of HOME key only takes you to an app list screen, not home screen.
    * Only way to get to home screen is to repeatedly press the BACK button exiting out of the Car Dock Menu and cancelling all apps that are currently running.
On my Droid 2, I was able to quickly exit the Car Dock Menu simply by pressing the BACK or exit button, regardless of which or how many apps were running. They would still run in the background, showing on the status bar.
Anyone know of a work around? I couldn't find any settings to change within the Car Dock menu to change this. Stopped by three Verizon stores and they all say we have to be missing something, as they couldn't figure it out either. One rep told me it was a new "nanny" feature so that you couldn't access your apps while driving, however when I pointed out that you could access the home screen if no apps were running, he wasn't sure what to say.
    Any help?

I solved my problem eventually by getting all the devices - 2 iphones, the newish pc and the older Mac on icloud.
All media, calenders and messages were lost from the iphones, except for purchased itunes that I paid another $30 to Apple to save for me and also paid Appple some more to use icloud but the good news is I did save my contacts
I opened all of my contacts and pretty much had to edit and drag them over almost individually as they weren't all in some sort of configuration that Apple liked - i.e. if an email address ended in ch or es or de it might not be accepted as a properly configured vcard.
It would be nice if Apple made it a litle easier when you have older devices and need to get them in sync with newer ones.

  • I deleted Safari from my Dock, how can i get it back please ?

Hi all i accidentally deleted my Safari Icon from my Dock, i managed to create a Safari shortcut in Finder and dragged that into the Dock, but the Shortcut has an Arrow on the bottom left corner that looks a bit out of place !!!.
How can i get the original Icon back please.
    tim

Go to your Applications folder and start up Safari by double-clicking on its icon. Once Safari is running it will be present in the Dock. Then right-click on the Safari icon in the dock and choose Options > Keep in Dock in the pop-up menu.

  • Un-minimising a Safari Window from the Dock

Using the Safari 4 Public beta with a Wacom, the window ends up minimising as I attempt to change tabs.* Is there a shortcut to un-minimise windows from the dock. ie rather than travelling over and pulling it out of the dock?
    <text>
     * Background explaination
If you don't use Wacom you probably will not get it, but slight movement in the pen (which is more free to move than mouse) causes the mouseDown event to be a move rather than a click. So you click again rather quickly, and then before you can say "That's the tenth time today..." the window is minimised.

See this document for a list of shortcuts: Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts.

    Andrew,
Another way to say what Niel has said is to find the folder in the Finder.  Click on the hard drive icon on the desktop.  Since Applications starts with an A, it should be near the top of the window.  Click and drag the Applications folder icon over to the position in the Dock where you want the icon to appear.  Release the mouse button and you should have a shortcut to the Apps folder back in your Dock.

  • How to delete an app off the desktop, without removing it from the dock

Yep. I thought you would just drag it to the trash (like Windows) But when I do that, it deletes the whole Application.

    Hello there ...
When you move files or apps from the desktop to the trash that is what you are doing, trashing them. If you want to keep the application (and keep it's shortcut in the dock, 'cause that what the dock is ... Shortcuts ...), then move the application either into /Applications or your user folder, then the dock shortcut will remain and the app will still work, but just not be on the desktop ...
Hope that makes sense and helps ...
    Mitch
