Lost ability to set up bluetooth devices

I'm running OS X 10.9.4 on my iMac. I have a Bluetooth keyboard which pairs at startup without problem. I also have a Bluetooth device for my hearing aids (UDirect2 from Unitron) which should allow me to stream the sound from my Mac wirelessly via this device to my hearing aids. When I first got the device I successfully paired it and got it to work. For a while it appeared in the list of Bluetooth items in the dropdown Bluetooth menubar menu, but it's disappeared from the list. I haven't been able to stream computer audio to my hearing aids since it disappeared.
Everything I've seen tells me I need to choose the "Set up Bluetooth Device"  menu option. But that option has disappeared from my Bluetooth menu. It's also not present on the Bluetooth menu I can get to through System Preferences. I know it used to be there, because I've used it before, but not since I updated the OS. Online help refers to the Bluetooth Setup Assistant, but there is no item on my computer by that name, and the Apple site after referring to it simply shows the Preferences pane, which does not include the "Set up Bluetooth Device" command on it--at least on my computer.
Is there something I'm missing? How can I get the setup command back?
The UDirect 2 pairs successfully with my iPhone and streams sound from it, so I know it's working. It rests in its charging cradle when I'm not actually using it and its power light shows it's fully charged.
It is turned on.

Same here. I've just had a replacement iPhone and I have been into the bluetooth settings to pair it with my MacBook. But I couldn't find the setup bluetooth device option anywhere. Going to the folder Eric mentioned above works, but I'm curious to know where the correct link has gone?

  • Have to "Set up Bluetooth Device" for wireless trackpad and keyboard almost every day

Almost every day when I turn on my MacBook Air in my home office, my Apple wireless keyboard and trackpad do not automatically reconnect. They used to connect just fine when I was in the viscinity, but now (for the past 6 months or so) I almost always have to:
Bluetooth > Set up Bluetooth Device
Turn off the keyboard (hold down the power button for several seconds)
Turn the keyboard back on (hold down power button for several seconds)
    Go through the setup wizard
    Repeat for the trackpad
    Things that don't work:
Pressing the button on each Bluetooth device
    Restarting each Bluetooth device
    Turning Bluetooth on and off
Setting the Bluetooth devices as "Favorites"
Selecting the device from the Bluetooth menu item and clicking "Connect"
    Rebooting my MacBook Air
    Resetting  the NVRAM / PRAM
Once the device is connected for the day, I do appear to be able to "Disconnect" and then "Connect" again from the Bluetooth menu item. The devices will also automatically reconnect by pressing a button on them. It just appears to lose the "lease" on them or whatever after a little less than a day.
I'm trying to think of other troubleshooting steps I could take and it just occurred to me that I could try swapping them with the peripherals I use at work (which are possibly newer models, but otherwise identical). Any other suggestions?

Huzzah! Less than 1 week after finally getting fed up and posting this question, I have discovered the root cause - my wife had been inadvertently stealing my keyboard and mouse connection whenever she turned on her laptop! She's using my hand-me-down MacBook Pro which I thought I had reset, but apparently it remembered its Bluetooth connections.
I had suspected something similar since I occasionally used the wireless keyboard with my iPad, but had already ruled that out.
I can't believe I figured this out after 6 months of mild frustration, but just days after posting this question

  • Why doesn't my bluetooth menu give me the option to "Set Up Bluetooth Device"?

Computer: 13.3 in Macbook Pro (2012)
I just bought a new bluetooth mouse (Gear Head Optical Mouse for Mac Computer).  The instruction manual tells me to click on the Bluetooth icon at the top right of my screen and click on "Set Up Bluetooth Device".  But when I tried that, my bluetooth pull down menu only gives me limited options, none which includes "Set Up Bluetooth Device". (see attached image)
I've already tried restarting my computer, going through the Bluetooth Preferences, and trying to connect via Mouse in System Preferences.  Does anyone have any ideas on where I might be doing something wrong or if I need to install anything additional?  Any help is appreciated!!

Following are instructions from help in the Bluetooth Preferences:
Make sure the device you’re setting up has charged batteries and is turned on.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Keyboard, Mouse, or Trackpad. If you’re setting up a mouse or trackpad, follow the onscreen instructions. When your mouse or trackpad is discovered, it automatically pairs with your Mac.

  • Trouble connecting to bluetooth devices.

I have an iPhone 4 with ios 5.0.1 software and i am having trouble connecting it via bluetooth to a mac so i can send pictures from one to another. I am also unable to connect to any other bluetooth device except for one in the past, a Motorola device that let you listen to music in the car wirelessly with any bluetooth device such as droid, blackberry, or iphone. On the SoundLink® speaker, press and hold the Bluetooth® button for approximately 10 seconds until you hear a tone. The SoundLink® speaker clears all Bluetooth® devices from its memory and becomes discoverable
Clear the list on your Bluetooth® device. For more information, please refer to the manufacturer of the device
Perform a product reset. On the speaker, press and hold Mute for 10 seconds, the LEDs will flash briefly. Press Power to turn the SoundLink® speaker back on
Try pairing the device again by following these steps:
With the Bluetooth® device and the SoundLink® speaker both turned on, press and hold the Bluetooth® button on the speaker for three seconds to make the speaker discoverable. The Bluetooth® indicator will slowly fade on and off approximately once every second to show the speaker is in discoverable mode
Set your Bluetooth® device to "Discoverable." This will allow your device to discover the SoundLink® speaker
On your device, locate the Bluetooth® device list. Select "Bose SoundLink" from the list
If your device asks for a passkey, enter digits 0000 and press OK. Some devices also ask you to accept the connection. YourBluetooth® device indicates when pairing is complete. The SoundLink® speaker indicates pairing is complete when the Bluetoothindicator stops fading on and off and remains on

  • Blackberry Device Manager can't find 9320 Bluetooth device (even Bluetooth is switched on and set to Discoverable)

I want to sync my Blackberry 9320 via Bluetooth to a Windows 7 Professional machine using a Bluetooth adapter. Syncing using USB cable works fine.
I can Bluetooth pair with the 9320 and also send / receive files to /from the Windows 7 machine. Fantastic !
HOWEVER, Blackberry Device Manager can not find the 9320 Bluetooth device (even Bluetooth is switched on and set to Discoverable) - see screen shots below.
By the way I have already tried (amongst other things) “Manually Install RIM Virtual Serial Ports in Microsoft® Windows® 7” on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gK2n5dHxGHI  Unfortunately, this does now work - the drivers do load up OK and remove the warning signs when view in Windows Device Manager, but Blackberry Device Manager still can't see my 9320.
    Please help !

I have the exact same problem with my 9360. I have also tried all the fixes I could find on the Internet with no luck. I have posted a request as well. I will let you know if I find a solution. What gets me though is that this appears to be a long standing issue with no obvious fix! Best of luck.

Its a 5S,I couldnt automatically connect to an already paired bluetooth device the next time.Have to forget that device then re establish each time.Am i missing any setting that does it ?Also if i turn on the bluetooth via settings and turn off it via control center, the settings page still reflects its on ,is that a bug in IOS ?

    What kind of Bluetooth device?
When you turn it off in Control Center, are you looking at the Settings page? If so, you need to close control center for it to reflect the change. When you turn Bluetooth off in Control Center and look on the Status Bar, what do you see? Do you see the gray Bluetooth icon? If you have Settings closed and turn Bluetooth off on the Control Center and then open the Settings app, do you still see Bluetooth enabled?

  • Hi,does anyone know how the Iwatch will play music when it is not near a bluetooth device as it is stated in the feature setting..Icloud streaming, internal hard drive?

Hi,does anyone know how the Iwatch will play music when it is not near a bluetooth device as it is stated in the feature setting..Icloud streaming, internal hard drive?

I did not hear them state the feature requirements directly in the streaming even but there are statements on the Apple website that clearly say that an iPhone is necessary.  I'm guessing that other than Bluetooth for pairing with the iPhone, it's just not technically possible to fit any other radios such as WiFi or LTE into that form factor or battery capacity.  I don't even remember them mentioning if it had a speaker or could pair directly with bluetooth headphones.
While I'm hoping that the watch has a reasonable stand-alone feature set, they didn't make it clear what exactly it can and can't do without an iPhone nearby.  I also hope that they communicate this better in the coming days.

  • Two sets of contacts showing in bluetooth device

I have an iPhone 4, iMac, Mobile Me account and Volkswagen in-car telephone kit. I use Mobile Me to show my mail and iCal on the iMac as my diary, the Address Book also syncs with Mobile Me from the iMac. When I tried to sync with the VW bluetooth device it's display shows 2 of every contact, I assume it's reading the contacts from Mobile Me and the Address Book from the iMac.
How do I get the VW to see only one list of contacts which would be updated as and when necessary?

This is the data included with the iPhone's backup, which is created and maintained by iTunes separately for each iPhone.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Each iPhone can have its own sync preferences with iTunes on the same computer, but it is probably a good idea to disable automatic syncing by iTunes when each iPhone is connected to iTunes to confirm the selections under the various tabs for the iPhone sync preferences with iTunes for each iPhone before syncing.
With your wife's iPhone, do not select sync contacts with the supported application on your computer for syncing contacts that you are using with your iPhone under the Info tab for your wife's iTunes sync preferences, and the same for calendar events if you are syncing calendar events with a supported application on your computer with your iPhone.
Your wife can create an iTunes playlist or playlists for the music she wants transferred to her iPhone, and she can select available video under the Video tab for her iPhone sync preferences that she wants transferred to her iPhone, and the same for photos under the Photos tab for her iPhone sync preferences. You can have the same or different iTunes content selected to be transferred to your iPhone under the Music and Videos tab for your iPhone sync preferences, and the same for photos under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences.

    Problem Description:
Yesterday I updated my laptop's BIOS to F 5A - latest available on HP Website. Since then I have lost the bluetooth functionality, which was wroking just fine prior to the update. Now the system doesn't find a bluetooth device.
    What I have already done:
    1. Switched back to previous versions of BIOS (available on HP Website coz I didn't note the BIOS version before I updated it). - That didn't work.
    2. Reseated the wireless card - Didn't work.
    3. Manually checked the connection of bluetooth module to the motherboard - Connection was fine but it still didn't work.
    4. Uninstalled the bluetooth driver and reinstalled it (HP integrated module WIDCOM) - still didn't work
    5. Installed HP Wireless Agent - Didn't work
    6. Installed HP Integrated module driver along with HP Wireless Agent - Didn't work
    7. Installed Ubuntu to check if its recognizing the device - Even its not recognizing the device which it used to do earlier.
    8. Sadly there's no BIOS setting in Setup which I can change to correct the bluetooth behaviour (Phoenix BIOS with limited interface).
After all the research, I am posting this because I am unable to find a sloution to this problem on my own. I request the members to please help.
    Uday

I got the bluetooth working. Had to dismantle the laptop and found that a small switch was loose.

  • Iphone 3G Problems with picking up Bluetooth devices

I've been trying to pair up my Iphone 3G with a bluetooth device and it won't recognise it (or anything else for that matter) even though I've switched this capability on.  Am I doing something wrong and I've not used Bluetooth before?

So tonight I successfully updated my iphone 3gs to ios4. Trying to be nice, I was going to update my dad's 3g after he went to sleep so he could wake up to the new update. no good deed goes unpunished.
So I plugged in his phone and it told me there was an update available, so I sat and waited while it downloaded. Once done, it was automatically starting the update. It first said it was backing up the iphone (which took forever). Then, to my surprise, it said it was restoring the iphone software and firmware. I was scared but then it said it was restoring the music and apps, so i figured it was restoring everything it had just taken so long to back up.
I waited and once it was done, the phone was updated with the new features but was back to it's factory settings. It had no contacts, no calendar events, no email was set up, no notes.
However, it did have the latest photos if I am remembering correctly.
So I frantically restored the phone to the latest back up, which I assumed would be from a couple of hours ago, but it turned out to be from January 17, 2010. I didn't sync the phone before starting the update because I didn't while updating my 3gs earlier, and all went well then.
So now the phone has lost anything that was added to it after January 17, 2010. Including the recent pictures that were still on the phone when it was restored to its factory settings earlier.
WHAT HAPPENED? CAN I FIX IT?
if the phone spent so long backing up before the update then why isn't there a back up file for it?
I am very desperate. my dad is a businessman who had a lot of important contacts and events stored in his phone. He wakes in 15 minutes at 5:00 am and I am just awaiting his anger when he finds a chunk of his data missing.
    please help me.

  • Bluetooth devices are not working properly since ios 7 update...

Since I updated to ios 7, my Bluetooth devices are only partially compatible with my iphone.  The devices will allow me to use the phone and all audio/video playback.  However, I have lost the ability to do simpe tasks such as forward/reverse tracks with my devices.  This loss of functionality is consistent across both Bluetooth Speakers (Monster Clarity HD) and in my vehicle (Lincoln MKX.)
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

This problem can be both hardware or software related. To elimnate the option of it being hardware related, I would make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store and have them check it out. They will be able to rule out the hardware issue. There are a couple of ways to try and fix hardware issues: 1) hard reset or 2) device restore. I've have linked articles with instructions to both for your reference.

  • I do not have volume from my iPad suddenly but I can get it through our Bluetooth device.  The lock rotation is not on.

I have suddenly lost the volume from my iPad. It works through the Bluetooth device only. I have turned off the lock rotation in settings.

The Settings > General > Use Side Switch To does not turn rotation lock nor notification mute on or off, all that setting does is say what the switch on the side of the iPad is controlling. What do you have Use Side Switch To set to ? If 'mute' then you need to slide the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume control 'off' (so it doesn't show orange) to unmute ; if you have the side switch set to control 'rotation lock' then you can mute/unmute via  Control Centre (swipe up from the bottom edge of the iPad, if the mute is  white then sounds are muted, tap it to unmute and the icon should turn grey).
If that doesn't work (and Bluetooth is off) then try a soft-reset.
