I know Time Capsule has a small reset button on the back. I'm not sure but I think the Airport Express does as well.
On Time Capsule, you could use something pointed (such as a ballpoint pen) to press down and hold the reset button until the status light flashes quickly (about 5 seconds). After that time, the password will reset to "public".

How does one recover a lost Airport Express password?

Both on my iPhone and iPad I can use the wifi signal at my friend's house, so they both have stored the password for her Airport Express. My friend, however, needs to re-enter her forgotten AE password to use her own AE. Me not good with technology, so how can I get my iPhone and/or iPad to display the password so that I can provide it to her?

If you can connect to your wireless network and you're using an Apple AirPort Base Station, then simply use AirPort Utility. From the Base Station menu, select Show Passwords...
Or, reset your wireless network password by momentarily depressing the reset button on your AirPort Extreme, Express, or Time Capsule. Press the button for one full second, no more. Then, configure a new password using AirPort Utility.
If you can't connect to your wireless network, or you are not using an Apple AirPort Base Station, you can use the procedure that follows below to retrieve it from your Mac's Keychain.
Your wireless network password is stored in your Mac's Keychain.
You must first have an Administrator account on a Mac that you use with that AirPort Base Station, one that is used to connect to your AirPort network.
On that Mac, open the Utilities folder. Find Keychain Access and launch it.
In the search field at the upper right, type Airport. All the Keychain entries for your base station will appear there, as well as other entries.
Look at the column "Kind". The entry you want to select will be labeled "AirPort network password" (not "AirPort base station password" or anything else).
If you are trying to recover the AirPort Base Station password then the entry you want to select will be labeled "AirPort base station password" not "AirPort network password".

Airport Express Password for mac and windows

i have airport express in my office and i have both windows laptops and mac's, i tried to setup a password for the airport and it succeed but the problem when i try to access the airport from windows it ask for password and i use my correct password but unable to connect on it. i am using 12 digital # for the password.
now i have removed the password and all the machines able to connect even the other companies are sharing my internet
is there any way to encrypt the airport? and i want each machine to be asked for the password.

One of the advantages of OS X is it has it's own password manager called Keychain Access. Unfortunately Windows doesn't have an equivalent so you have to rely on third parts applications like Roboform. To locate Keychain Access simply click Command-Spacebar and type Keychain Access and Spotlight will locate it.
There is another tool you can try that has gotten pretty good reviews, it is:

I'm not aware of any third parts apps that work on both Windows and OS X so you may be forced to use two solutions.

Can't recall the Airport Express password

I've not been using my base station since Verizon came and installed FIOS and said I shouldn't use the base station in conjunction with their modem/router. I am aware this is not true and will get to that later. Tonight I want to listen to iTunes over my home audio system. In the past I've just hooked an iPod to my audio equipment but my iPod died this weekend.
I want to use the Airport Express to listen to iTunes. Plug Express into wall outlet, plug cable from audio equipment into Express, open Airport Utilities and enter password. ****! Have not used Express in over a year and don't remember the password!

I reset the Express and Airport Utility recognized the Express. I used the password "public" as suggested in the directions. Utility suggested I update the firmware which I did and now I want to change the password and it keeps asking for a password. "public" is not working in this case.

When trying to reset airport express password, I've got an error code -16.

A friend of mine gives me an AirPort Express which I intend to use at home to connect it to an audio device in my living-room. I’ve already have a wireless network based on a Linksys router, so the idea is to extend my actual network.
As the Airport was used, it has already a password, which my friend does not remember.
After reading the user manual, I’ve achieve to get into the configuration window, after I’ve made all the modifications (including the device password), but when saving I’ve get an error code -16.
Any help or advice?

First you cannot extend your linksys network with the apple expess. at least not in the typical definition of extending a network. you should first do a factory reset of the express to wipe out all prior settings.
you do this by unplugging the unit and holding down the reset button while you plug it back in. wait 10 to 15 seconds before releasing the reset button.
you'll then want to configure the airport express

I just bought a MacBook Pro 10,7.4 Lion , my wifi is activated, but it is not connected to my network . My WPA2 pass word from my old Macbook does not seem to work. What are my options? Thank you

Somebody, please answer this question!!!! I had the exact same problem today! I have been using my iBook G4 with my base station no problem for a week, and it never prompted me for my password each time I woke it up and connected thru Safari. Actually, I have been concerned that I'm not password protected at all, even though I did set up a password when I first got the Airport express. (I had no idea which type of security level to choose so I chose WPA. Does it matter?). Anyway today my base station was inadvertantly unplugged. I just stuck it back in the wall, waited for it to turn green and then tried to access Safari. That's when it started asking me for my Network and Password. I am 100% sure I kept entering the correct information but it refused to accept them! Then all of a sudden for no reason I could discern, boom, I'm in. Aack!

Airport Express password

Hi, I decided to increase the security of my Airport Express and change it to a closed network. However, it asks me for the base station password and i can't remember if I set one or whether one came with it. If I soft reset the base station and enter a new password I get an error message to the effect that "an error occurred during the configuration". Sometimes on soft reset and also on hard reset I get a message to say that 'this admin program is unable to reset the password and to use either the software that came with it or use the software available online to set it up. ANY IDEAS PLEASE !! ?

My recommendations:
1. Do a factory default reset of the Airport Express:

2. Run the Airport Setup Assistant to set up your Airport Express from scratch. For wireless security settings, choose only "WPA Personal" and enter a password - that is all the security you need. Do NOT select to create a closed network - that is essentially useless as a security measure.

IBook doesn't recognize my Airport Express password... Why?

I have a new Airport Express (802.11); my iMac and MacBook can log onto my new network just fine, but my old iBook (OS X 10.2.8) cannot.
My iBook recognizes my network, and using the AirPort assistant I tried to join my new network, but it says my password is incorrect. It is NOT! I created the password, and it is the SAME password that my iMac and MacBook use to log on.
Why does my iBook say my password is incorrect, while my other machines do not!? The Airport Express is suppose to work on a OS X 10.2.7 and above.

AirPort Express password & printer trouble

I recently upgraded from Tiger to Leopard to Snow Leopard. Since then I have been unable to use my AirPort Express to print to my HP Photosmart C4180.
In trying to solve this problem, I came across this article http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21200 When I open the Utilities for AirPort it says that I need to update my firmware, but it requires my password to do so. The password that I wrote down for the AirPort does not work, nor does any other one I ever use. There is no "forgot password" button, so what should I do?

When you are updating firmware or system software, you are asked for your main administrator password. This is the password you setup to log onto your Mac.

Airport express password security

I just bought an airport express and have it working but I don't know if its secure. I put in a password when configuring it but I had to enter the info multiple times (like 20) before I could get the system up. When I open my laptop, I am automatically on wifi and it doesn't ask me for my password so I don't know if I have password protection. I live in a condo with many neighbors. I don't know if I should use WEP or WAN or whatever else because I don't know what any of these things are or mean. Other than bringing in another computer into my home, I don't know how to check to make sure that I am password protected. Thank you for your help.

The AirPort Express (AX) has potentially 2 passwords associated with it.
(1) The admin password is used to access the AX to change the AX's configuration. This has nothing to do with securing wireless traffic.
(2) The wireless encryption password is used to encrypt the wireless traffic. You must enable this using AirPort Utility.
WPA2 is the best wireless encryption. Then WPA, 128 bit WEP, and finally 64 bit WEP (very weak).
Once your Mac connects to a network using wireless encryption and you enter the password for the network, the Mac remembers the password and you don't need to enter the password any more.
You can use a tool like iStumbler to see if your network has wireless encryption enabled or not.

If you still have the same Mac that you used to set up the AirPort Express originally, there is a good chance that you can retrireve the password from KeyChain Access.
Otherwise, you can perform a Soft Reset to assign a new password to the AirPort Express.

How can i change my old airport express password with mavericks

I just bought a new TV and I am trying to connect to my wi-fi, which runs via an old Airport Express. The TV manufacturer says that I should try changing my password from a WEP to WPA - but it seems that I can't even access my Airport Express because it's not supported by Mavericks. Is there a work-around, or do I need to upgrade my Airport Express? It's running fine otherwise - supports multiple laptops and iPhone.

Just download and install Airport 4.2 for Windows available at:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport42forwindows.html
Full versions of all the Windows configuration software utilities for the Airport Express are provided in that download.
Also provided on that CD was the latest version of iTunes for Windows. If you need that - it can also be downloaded directly from Apple's web site.
