Lost airport network share and print access - security update?

Roughly around the time I installed the last security update to my 10.3.9 iBook I lost Airport 802.11b access to printing services, afp and smb shares.
I still have internet services (email and web).
If I connect via fixed ethernet everything works.
Any suggestions?

I fixed this, but I can't remember the full details. Sorry! I just wanted to mention there was a fix. I think I somehow tricked the system into forgetting all prior access and I rejoined the network.

Upgrade to 10.4.6 and Now I can't file share and print from network

Problem. When both computers were running OS 10.3.9 I could share files back and forth and print no problem.
Now that I have upgraded the Pismo to 10.4.6, I don't the other computer and can't print as it doesn't see the printer either.
Now when I put both computers on the same router, ie the WRT54G, I can share and print.
Computer 1 G4 w/upgrade to 1mhz, OS 10.3.9(all up to date) connected to a Linksys Router BEFSR41 which is connected to a cable modem. I have a HP 5740 Deskjet printer connected to the CPU.
Computer 2 G3 Pismo 500, OS 10.4.6 with Sonnet ARia Extreme 54G Wireless cardbus card, and a Linksys WRT54G Router. The WRT54G is connected to the BEFSR41 Router.
Network set up.
cable modem to BEFSR41 to ports in use, one to G4 and one to the WRT54G. the WRT54G connects to pismo via wireless card.

If your using the wrt54g as router and also connecting it to another router then you have 2 computers on different subnets. To share files and printers locally both computers should be on the same subnet.
Why use the BEFSR41 at all you could just use the wrt54g on its own. Otherwise you will have to setup the wrt54g as an access point only. To do that connect the cable from from the BEFSR41 to one of the 4 network ports on the wrt54g don't use its internet port.

Pages - Share and Print - Email document issue

I ran into an issue today on my iPad2 and wanted to see if it was just me or can anyone reproduce this error. If it turns out to be just me, someone help me undertand how to get around the issue. If it is more widespread, where do I report this so it can be resolved in an future release?
Here is what happened.
I received a Word document via e-mail. When I opened it in e-mail and chose to "open with Pages" it worked fine. Imported into Pages sans the font (which I've come to expect). Then I edited the document (it was a quick survey I was taking) and then was ready to send it back to the person who sent it to me. I chose the tools icon, selected "Share and Print" then selected "Email Document" and then chose Word as the format. It converted it and attached the file in a blank e-mail ready for me to address and send.
Well, I wasn't ready to send just yet. So I clicked on "Cancel" and then "Save Draft" which it did successfully. Then I went into email, edited my "Draft" in my Drafts folder, addressed it, etc. and sent it on its merry way. Well, guess what? The file did not come through on the e-mail. Just my text.
I tried "copy and paste" of the file after saving as a draft and it only sent the "picture" of the file ICON and not the file itself. I tried multiple times saving it as a draft and then sending and it never worked.
If I send from within Pages right at the time after "Email Document" is selected, it works every time. It seems to only be when I save the email as a draft from within Pages that it will not send the attachment or something happens to the attachment. I did notice also, that if I edited any "text" from that draft and then saved the draft again, all my edited text wouldn't save either. So any "Draft" saved from Pages I couldn't edit regardless of any attempt.
Draft saving and editing within the email application works as expected.
NOTE: Just before submitting this discussion, I tried the above on my wife's iPad2 with the same results. Anything "saved as a draft" from Pages in e-mail, will not send the attachment. Anything sent directly from within Pages and not saving it as a draft, will send the attachment.
There are times I would like to save it as an attachement, should this work? Thanks everyone!

I am only vaguely familiar with iWork.com. I know it is a cloud based way to share documents with others, but this is what the send to option does when you work with Pages, Numbers or Keynote on the iPad. I would assume that the function performs the same way in iWork.com. - but it is only an assumption.
"Send to" is the command that will let you send that file to your computer the next time you sync with iTunes. It is the way the iPad transfers the file to your computer - the iPad method of file sharing. You can sync files back and forth from iPad to computer with file sharing as long as the app on the iPad is compatible with a similar application on your computer. In your case iWorks apps on both the iPad and your Mac.

HT4356 I no longer have the option to share and print. It used to be there but no longer but it is still available with other apps, eg, Pages. Any solution?

Restoring your iPod to factory settings is the best way to try and get it back to working order. You can use the instructions below to restore it:
How to restore iPod
Verify that you have an active Internet connection, because you may need to download new versions of the iTunes and iPod Software.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes if necessary.
Open iTunes. Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
Select your iPod in the Source panel. You will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes window.
Click Restore.
If you are using a Mac, you will be asked to enter an administrator’s name and password.

Lost my Address Book contacts after a security update?

I am using OS X 10.4.7 and did a security update last night. Now I also have a Nokia E61 and since this morning I have lost all my contact in my address book on the Mac ( a powerbook). Since I didn't play around with the mac nor the nokia I am thinking that it all got lost in the security update.
I checked my iSync logs and there it indicates that it deleted all contact from my phone right after I did the restart for the update...
Can anybody help me get my contacts back?
I do backups but since just got back from my vacation I didn't have the time yet ..

To answer my own qq,
Well I found some of my important contacts in the trash . They were under a folder named "Recovered files". There where a few named that way so you had "Recovered files #1", "Recovered files #2", till #6. In one of them I found my contacts again, well atleas the ones that I added over the hollidays .

AirPort network: HP 1300 printer gets "lost"

My wife and I have the following setup at home:
iBook G3 w/ 10.4.3., AirPort card
iBook G4 w/ 10.4.3., AirPort Extreme card
Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (latest software - I think 5.5.1)
HP LaserJet 1300
What happens: whenever I connect to the network and try to print, nothing gets printed. I have to restart the AirPort Base Station, and then, when I try to print again, it gets printed.
AirPort in the Network Preference Pane is configured:
- by default, join Automatic
- Using DHCP
- PPPoE is off
- AppleTalk is off
- no proxies configured
- use passive FTP mode
Over at the AirPort Base Station, the settings are (among others):
- Distribute IP addresses (share a single IP address)
How do I configure the iBooks and the Base Station in such a way, that printing is not such a problem???
(BTW, I posted this question on the "Networking Forum" before discovering this forum here, which is probably the better place to ask)

If I understand you correctly, the setup would be:
- check both iBooks to have identical printer driver (since both iBooks run 10.4.3 and had a clean install of Tiger, this should be the case - but will check)
- take iBook G4 and have in System Preferences > Print & Fax >> Sharing the "Share these printers with other computers" checkbox turned ON
- take iBook G3 and have in System Preferences > Print & Fax >> Sharing the "Share these printers with other computers" checkbox turned OFF
Will try this out over the weekend (wife leaves her iBook G3 at work during the week) and report back to this place.

New PC laptop - can get on Airport Network but can't access internet

Just got a new HP laptop for real estate reasons (MLS is only available through a PC).
All of my other computers are Macs and my wireless network is on a Airport Basestation.
I can access the network with the PC but can't get on the internet even though I'm on the network.
Anyone have any ideas?

Ok, you have a completely different situation than that of the Originator of this post. In your case, you're using your Mac as a software base station and not a wireless router.
The following would be the setup steps...
To setup for Internet Sharing (Wired to Wireless):
Enable Software Firewall
System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall
- Click Stop to start the software firewall
Setup the Network
Cable Modem > (Ethernet cable) > [Ethernet port] Mac > (wireless) > PC
Setup Port Order
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
- Verify that "AirPort" and "Built-In Ethernet" are enabled.
- Verify that "Built-In Ethernet" is at the top of the list, followed by "AirPort".
- Click "Apply Now."
Configure the Internet Connection
System Preferences > Network > Show > Built-In Ethernet > TCP/IP
- Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
- Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
Enable Internet Sharing
System Preferences > Sharing > Internet
- Share your connection from: Built-in Ethernet
- To computers using: AirPort (checked) (Note: Uncheck all other entries in the list.)
- AirPort Options
-- Network Name: <anything you want>
-- Channel: Automatic
-- Enable encryption (using WEP) (optional)
-- Password: (optional)
-- Confirm Password: (optional)

Crashes when running applications from network share - "Windows cannot access the file for one of the following reasons"

starting a couple of weeks ago, we get the following error(s) when running applications from a network share. We don't know what causes this, we are not aware of any major changes in our network infrastructure or client/Server configuration. We did upgrade
a lot of machines to Windows 8, but the issue also occurs on older Win7 computers.
We figured out a workaround though: The applications run fine when launching from a FQDN share (like
\\share.domain.Company.com) and only cause problems when running from
\\share directly. They have worked fine for years without FQDN though.
Any ideas?

It sounds like a DNS suffix issue. When this issue occurs, please try to ping share on the client, then check if the corresponding IP address is correct. If the IP address is wrong, please adjust your settings of DNS to make sure that the client can resolve
the share correctly.
If it's very hard to change the settings of the DNS for some reason, as a work around, we can add the entry into the clients' hosts file.

How Do I find out what app is auto-mounting a network share and stop it?

I have a new laptop, the 13" rMBP. I installed Steam and wanted to use the network share on my server to store the game files. Everything went OK. I closed Steam, disconnected the share and shutdown my laptop. When I opened my laptop later on at work, it started to try and mount the network share.It keeps on going it. I removed the Steam app and all files related to Steam that I could find. I've looked at fstab, auto_home, auto_master and a large list of other files and directories and I *still* cannot find the offending file that's auto-mounting the share. It's really frustrating.
The share auto-mounts when I am home but not on the desktop or in finder. I find it by looking at /Volumes/ in terminal. If I mount the share manually under /Volumes/ it shows as Games-1 and mounts on the desktop under Games.
Does anyone have any ideas on where I should be looking to find the offending process/file/daemon?

thanks for the reply but are you sure about this? What difference would it make? Why 5 apps?
Even if it does work, which I doubt, at some point, I will have to resync ALL my apps again and surely the same thing will happen again, and I will be none the wiser. I still won't know which app it is. There must be a way of finding this out.
Any ideas?
What is really freaking me out is how it is connecting to my carrier (who is charging me) with Cellular data switched off.......?

Had BT Infinity installed last Friday and now cant access secure sites such as my Bank to check my account or Credit Card site to check latest outgoings. My laptop accesses but PC doesnt using the same router. Any suggestions please.

Seen this hundreds of times, the most likely cause is CMOS battery in your PC running flat, it means that whenever you unplug your PC it loses the date and time.
SSL certificates are valid for date periods and your PC things it's not in that date period.
First thing to check is your Date/Time

Network Shares and Missing Files on Windows 2000

Music files are stored on a Windows Server in a shared folder. iTunes 5.0 is installed on a laptop. Using the advanced preferences the iTunes Music folder location is changed to:
Desktop --> My Network Places --> Music
The folder location changes to:
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Nethood\Music
instead of:
\\ServerName\Music
When updating a podcast, a file is downloaded and can be played, but it is not stored on the server. A search on the local drive will not find anything -- HOWEVER IT IS THERE. Using the command prompt the file can be seen at:
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Nethood\Music\Podcasts\Podcaster\Filename.mp3.
This is confusing behavior to have a file that's supposed to be stored on a server end up in a hidden file on your local drive.
RESOLUTION: Created a mapped network drive and used that for the iTunes Music folder location.

Without more information about what you've already tried and how you're networked together, I can only suggest that while in the Finder on your Mac, select Go --> Connect to Server... and enter something like "smb://ipAddress" where ipAddress is the IP address of your Windows computer.
If your computers are on a network where you have a home router, verify that they can both access the Internet. If so, they should be able to communicate with each other.

I'm about to move all my content (pdf and epub files) to a Microsoft Windows Storage server because of new server setup.
So my question is:
If I have two servers:
Server #1 (IP: 10.10.10.1): Hosting a ACS.
Server #2 (IP: 10.10.10.2): The storage server sharing the pdf and epub content in a network share named: "mycontent"
Is it possible for server #1's acs to get the content by a network share: \\10.10.10.2\mycontent ?
My guess that I would have to change the com.adobe.adept.packaging.baseLocation setting in my packaging-conf config file to point towards
the network share located on the server #2 but how can this be done and what would the com.adobe.adept.packaging.baseURL be in this example ?
If this is possible what would happen to all the content fulfillments that was made when the content was located locally on the same server hosting the acs - would it require me to change something for every single fulfillment in the database used by the acs ?
I'm using Adobe Content Server version 4
