Lost all audio

I have an HP Envy 17 running Windows 7. All audio on my computer (DVDs, mp3 files, system sounds, etc) has suddenly stopped working.
Perhaps not coincidentally, a large number of Windows updates were just applied to my computer.
How should I proceed?
Thanks for your suggests,
Trip

  • Lost all audio in iMovie '09

I have suddenly lost all audio while working on project in iMovie '09.  It started when a newly imported video had no audio but my saved project still had its audio.  Then the problem spread to my project also.  Now I have no audio at all.  I've checked the obvious like mute, computer volume...etc.  Any ideas out there?

No. I did not enter my Admin password. I tried to open the iPhoto library from my User -> Library -> Pictures folder. It said something like "Needs to upgrade.. Upgrade now?" Then, I opened iPhoto and had iPhoto '09 but no new pictures.
So, I read some forums online and tried to find the Originals folder in my iPhoto library (show package contents) folder. However, showing the package contents was not an option. Fortunately, I back up files and the iPhoto library saved on my external hard drive a few months ago has pictures and the originals folder. I am, however, still missing a few months worth of photos.
    This is what I know:
When I accessed the iPhoto library file from in User -> Library -> Pictures, it only contained pictures from several years ago. It apparently accessed a different iPhoto library. Maybe that's what the upgrade was for?
But if it was merely an upgrade or change of some kind, the new pictures should still be present somewhere in the hard drive, which does not appear to be the case.
And, if iPhoto and the iPhoto library are linked, then the library should not change depending on which way I accessed it.
    I went to User -> Library -> Pictures ->

  • Added a song to a movie in imovie and lost all audio across all clips. Any help?

I added a song to a movie in imovie and lost all audio from several clips. Removed the song and audio is still gone. How can I regain original audio once lost after adding song to imovie?

The audio should still be there.  Select a clip and open the Inspector to the Audio Tab and turn the volume up to 100%.

  • I have lost all audio on both my internal and external speakers.

I have lost audio on both my internal and external speakers.  I have checked the System Preferences when my external speakers are plugged in it is acknowledged.  When using internal speakers they are also acknowledged.  Sound volume on Preferences is on and fully high.  The sound buttons on the keyboard  do not work and the sound level is now locked in at full sound and cannot be adjusted using the keys.  The System Preferences shows that Mute is now checked and I cannot uncheck it.  What should I do to get my sound back both internally and externally?

    Repair permissions & restart.
Check your settings in the Audio Midi app which is located in the Utilities folder.

    Repairing the mysteriously muted Mac
The background on the issue is that there’s a small sensor switch inside the headphone port. When you insert a headphone jack, the sensor understands what's what and changes the sound output setting to Headphones. If you insert a jack for digital audio output, the device changes to Digital Out. When you remove the jack completely, it should read Internal Speakers.
The spirits tell me that there’s a very good chance that you recently had something jacked into this port—a set of headphones or a cable leading to powered speakers, for example. When you removed the jack, something in the port prevented the sensor from tripping correctly. That’s why you see Digital Out instead of internal Speakers.
The solution is to force the sensor to do its job. The safest way to do that is to simply run a jack in and out of the port a few times. Much of the time, this takes care of the problem by correctly tripping the sensor. If that doesn’t work, there may be gunk in the port. Before turning to more invasive techniques, get a can of compressed air, attach the small tube that fits the nozzle, and blast a few shots of air into the port. With any luck, that should dislodge the gunk and the port will operate as it should.
If that doesn’t work, find a foam-tipped swab that fits (electronics shops generally carry them), dip it in rubbing alcohol, and gently insert it into the headphone port in an attempt to wipe away any stubborn gunk. I recommend foam rather than cotton swabs because the cotton variety might leave threads behind. (This same technique works well with misbehaving headphone ports on devices such as iOS devices.)
It's possible that gunk has nothing to do with it. Rather, it may be that the switch just needs a subtle nudge. If a jack or swab doesn't work, I've heard of people successfully resetting it with a deft poke of a toothpick.

  • I have lost all audio output

I don't know what has happened, but I can't get any audio out from Soundtrack Pro anymore.
Even if I open previous projects, and try different audio outputs such as Built-in Out, Built in Line Out or my MOTU 828MK2, there's no audio, even though the meters show audio signal.
It worked a month ago, but even the projects I did one month ago are now silent.
In Final Cut Pro I have no problems getting the audio (thru my 828MK2) but when I switch to Soundtrack there's no sound.
I would have assumed they all use the same Audio/Midi setup?

go to settings, general, sounds, and check the volume. if the sound there is full blast, try going to settings, music, volume limit, and make sure that's turned off. now if that fails to work, try reseting the ipod by holding down the home button and the sleep/wake button at the same time until the apple logo appears on the screen. if that doesn't work restore your ipod on itunes.

  • I've lost all audio output from all projects on logic.

All the other internall audio ( Itunes, movies, videos) works so I know it's not the jack or wiring. Ive been to preferences> audio and re set it to internal audio1 and even tried setting it to pre sonus fire studio output but no help there switched it back and still nothing. It seems to be configured on logics audio preferences too but no output! All the level meters are bouncing but no sound! PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN!! Thanxz.

I'll try anything but the problem is that all projects are not coming out and wouldn't the solo buttons be limited to each project?  If the solo is stuck on one song it shouldnt be affecting all other songs right? but who knows,,,IT CANT HURT TO TRY!! Thanks for your input and I'll let you know!!

  • I've lost all audio and more . . .

    Hello Steve and All.
Just when things were going well, something fatal has occurred. I use a mix of MOD files (Panasonic cameras) and AVI files (Canon mini DV camera) and all has gone well with the editing until yesterday.
The problem is that the program (Premier Elements 7) thinks that my media is off-line, but it isn't off-line. When I try to relink, the 'Locate Media' option gives the following error: "The selected file cannot be linked because its type (video) does not match the original file's type (audio and video)."
    I cannot proceed from there.
When I try playing other MOD files in my library, I get no sound. When I try playing the MOD file with another program, everything works fine.
Now I am stuck. I cannot get Premier Elements 7 to recognize any of my MOD files. It has worked for months, but this has me at a dead stop.
Last night I ran the Repair Option from the installation program disk and the program began to work again -- but it was time for bed, so I shut down for the night. Tonight, the problem is back and cannot be repaired.
I am stuck in a big way. My deadline for a party video is Christmas, but I cannot proceed.
Please help me. I don't know how to resolve this problem.
    Sincerly,
    Brian

The problem started part way through the editing process last night. No Windows update was installed.
If one has Window update set to full automatic (default), there are many OS updates that will download and install, and the user never knows about them, unless they require a reboot. Many do not. I just manually downloaded full updates to Office, plus four new hot-fixes for XP-Pro, and none required a reboot. Unless one has changed the default, these things can download and be installed without the user ever knowing about it.
So back to my hypothesis. Could this be from a corrupt file? If so, how can I determine the culprit file?
Glad to hear that things are working for you now. This would be when I would do a Save_As, and a Save_As_a_Copy, just in case. This ARTICLE will give you some of the details on the differences between the three flavors of Save, plus some background on what is in a .PREL file.
About the only way to track down a bad Asset would be to systematically eliminate Assets, testing along the way.
What is the connection for your external? USB externals have been known to have serious read/write issues. I'd look in my Event Viewer, and check for any error, or warning messages. Look especially closely in the links in any, for driver errors, or for Delayed Write Errors. That would point to the USB external.
I have neither encountered, nor have I read of such issues with FW, either 400, or 800.
Good luck, and hope that the Project is completed on time!

  • Have lost all audio with our pavilion g6, checked volume, audio controls, tried rebooting no luck

paviliong6, windows 7 home, just purchased in july, 2011. AUdio stopped working, including output thru dvd, headphones, etc, have tried rebotting, volume, audio controls, accessories, etc.  not luck.  ran virus scan, came clean.  any help?

    Hi,
If this has just happened recently, try running Windows System Restore.  If you have Norton Internet Security installed, you will need to disable Nortons Tamper Protection as shown in Step 2, on the link below.
    http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20091112171719EN&ln=en_US
Once you've done this, shut down the PC.  Windows System Restore is usaully best run in Safe Mode.  Tap away at f8 as you start the PC to enter Windows Recovery Console.  Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and hit enter.  When this has loaded, from the Start Menu, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools and launch System Restore.  Pick a restore point at least 24 hours before the audio issue and then proceed with the restore process.  When complete, Windows will reboot as normal.

  • My iMac spontaneously lost all audio!

Went to bed it was working fine, woke up this morning and no audio. When I go to Settings the only option is Digital out - Optical digital out. No more built-in and no more speakers. I do hear the start-up chime, so I know it's not blown speakers. Any ideas how to get back my internal speakers?

  • Suddenly lost all audio???

Suddenly I can't get any sound out of my iMac 1.83 Ghz Intel.  Any ideas what to do?

Well folks - I've been to the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store, and it was bad news.  If your Intel iMac won't make a peep of any sort, it's probably the sound board. Later model iMacs have a separate sound board which can be replaced.   Older Intel (i.e. 1.83 Ghz) iMacs' soundboards are integrated with the main board.  So to restore sound, the entire main board must be replaced (about $850 part and labor).  It's time to invest in a new iMac. Farewell to my old 17" Intel iMac - it has served me well since 2006.

  • Pavilion dv6661se. i have lost all audio. i get prompts that say 'no audio output device'

How can I download the driver for the sound card that I have. I also do not know how to look-up what sound card I do have.

In System Preferences>Sound do you have your internal speakers set as the output source?
You may have toggled on optical output with the Toslink cable - check to see if there's a red light coming from the port. If so, quickly plug and unplug a set of headphones for a number of times to see if you can toggle the switch back from optical to the internal speakers.
    Good luck,

  • Titles wipe out all audio

Wow, what an effect. After 10 hours of work, completing an iMovie project and burning several DVD copies, my wife noticed several typos within titles (spanish language). After fixing the errors, I lost all audio - not just with the clips containing titles, but within the WHOLE iMovie project.
    What;s going on?
    G4 Tower   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I am by no means an expert but would think that you are just adding the "file", not the playable on and that would convert the iPod into a masstorage device WHICH then would deleate all the musicfiles on it. What you need to do is to download a program to tranform the video file in to a mp4 file and then put it into iTunes and Then load it onto the iPod, that worked for me.
