Lost all data on my G5

The strangest thing happen on my powermac about 12 midnight.
I had just finish watching a movie and was just browsering the net when I notice that my folders, files were disappering from the finder. I tried to open up "activity monitor" but I couldn't get the mouse nor the keyboard to work. By then I decided to do a "cold" shutdown, since I wasn't able to see or stop what was happening. when I restarted, there was no OS to boot into anymore(OS X was no longer found by the boot loader). I then booted via the Apple boot disk to see if I could get access to the drives. To my dismay there was NORTHING on my boot drive and all my data on my external firewire drive was gone. God I almost died. I was beyound myself. what had happen that the system had began to erase all the data? I totally lost everything I had. the drives were totally wipe clean. In all my years with the computer this has never happened before. what could have caused this? could it have been a virus? or did I get hacked? right now I really cannot explain what and why this happened. I had firewalls running (2 seperate ones)sophos antivirus, had "little snitch" running so I control what goes out to the net, etc.
I don't know if I will ever find an explanation for this, but am *ucking **** that all my data on my back-up drive and the system volume is gone.

Here's how I would troubleshoot this if it were my Mac:
First, check and recheck all your cables and connections. Reseat them and make sure everyting looks in good shape - probably not the source of your prooblem but you have to check everything before doing what I'm about to suggest.
There's a good chance the drive might be on it's last legs but maybe it can be saved. If at all possible try to do back-up of your drive - copy whatever you can to a CD (or DVD if possible). Sounds like it's all invisible now though. It is probably still there but the directory may have crapped out for any number of reasons.
Next, boot your Mac using the system disk (the one that has your OS on it). To do this put the disk in the drive and restart it holding down the "C" key. This makes the Mac use the disk as the source of the OS instead of the drive where it is installed. You may actually be able to see the files that disappeared - if you have a second disk drive you could do a back-up at this point but it'll be really slow - better than losing important stuff though. At this point you can use Disk Utilities/Disk First Aid to run Apples' diagnostics to see what's causing the problems. Hopefully it's just a corrupt directory which can be fixed real easily.
You can also do this using Tech Tool or Disk Warrior as your boot disk if you have one of them. I've heard many good things about Disk Warrior but have never used it. I do have and do like Tech Tool quite a bit (I am no longer a fan of Norton's Disk Doctor when dealing with OS X and Dual/Quad G5's).
After running the diagnostics there will be a report of issues and if the software of your choosing can fix it, fix 'em all. I would actually try more than just one of the above apps. I would run Apple's Disk First Aid and fix all items possible then do the same with Tech Tool, etc..
If it is simply directory corruption, bad sectors or something relatively simple like that and this fixes it then you're good to go.
If there's still problems then the last chance to save the drive is to use Disk Utilities, Tech Tool, or Disk Warrior, etc. and do a complete info wipe and reinitiallize the disk. Don't just delete the system folder and reload it - reinitiallize it and use an option that overwrites every bit on the drive, too, which eliminates any coruption from carrying forward. Unfortunately this means reinstalling the OS from the ground up as well as the loss of any data that you weren't able to back-up. This is the only way to be sure that any lingering problems were software related. Do this last step only as a last resort - but if the drive is still good but the corruption is too severe for diagnostic apps. it's the only way to get it back up and running. If after doing this you still have problems then you know it's the drive itself and replacement is in order.

    If things seem to be going haywire with your phone, it seems that it MAY be a software issue.
    Now, that being said, that does not necessarily mean that it is a virus. Software issues do happen sometimes. It is probably just coincidence.
    What you need to do is restore the device using iTunes. This will fix any software issues. After you have done this, you can restore from an iCloud backup.
    iCloud does not back up the actual software, so no, the "virus" would not have gotten into the backups.

    ok turn it off manually and turn it back on while holding the apple logo bottor or the function botton this will give you  an option to choose if you want to startup with osx ow windows. let me know if this works

  • My X301 with solid state Hard disk lost all data

    Hello all people, excuse my poor english i try to explain my problem.
    1.- I have a Lenovo x301 (type 2776-TMU) with a 128 Gygabites solid state hard disk (Samsung MMCQE28G8MUP-0VAL1)
    2-The sympton is: Lost all data of the hard disk and apears 0 partitions and 0 bytes used.
    3.- I run all type of diagnostics and all  pass OK.
    4. I restore windows,aplications etc.  and all work fine, but in any random time, the hard disk lost all info and another time apear 0 Partition and 0 bytes used.
    5. I try to install, bios, firmware or any update of the lenovo web, and no resolve my problem.
    6.- In a last chance install via dvd a fresh instalation  with oem windows 7, and present the same sympton of point 4.
    7.- I change parameters on the bios setup of the SATA interface (ochi or compatible) with the identical result of the 4 point.
    How you understand, i have a big problem and desesperate, but i not sure if my hard disk is of the problem, or the mother board, any firmware, etc.
    Any have idea in how attack o determine exactly the origen of my problem?

    Sounds like a faulty SSD. Return for warranty repair/replacement.

    I partitioned a 2TB drive with DiskUtility.  Partition 1: 1.99TB, Paritition 2: 1GB.  Lost all data Partition 1.  Two years of family photos, videos, business communications and files, time machine backups, are gone.  What to do?
    The solution I have so far: downloaded "Wondershare Data Recovery," followed instructions, it is scanning drive.  Does anyone else have any experience with capabale softwares to use for this purpose?  How about some professional data recovery centers accross the US where I can mail in my drive, and they do the rest?
    In general, what do I do?

  • IPAD2 calendar lost all data after 5.1 upgrade

    I just upgraded my iPad via iTunes to v5.1 today, and just like my upgrade previously  to 5.01, my calendar lost all data.  Somehow, I think I was able to recall the data under 5.01 whereby it just magically came back.  I don't remember  how it  came back.  How do I get my calendar data back??

    1). Re how are u syncing calendar.  And "info" :  answer: the entire "sync calendars with .....". Box is all gray.  When I click a check to the left of Sync, the Outlook field comes alive, and no other choices in that drop down field.
    "All calendars" is radio buttoned, and Do not sync events older tha .30. days ischecked. 
    I'll now leave it like that but since I don't use OUTLOOK on mt laptop I don't see how it wll affect anything .
    Further own on th screen, under ADVANCED, checking Calendars. Apparently willrlac "the selected information in this iPad with information from this omputer".   I don't know how to interpret this, do you?  If I check it it will get information form the computer ?   What info? A previous cal data file?
    2). Re page 70.  If you had not told me (sent a ref URL in one of u'r replies tonite), I wouldn't have even known about the iPad 5.1 manual. 
    Pager 70 : I read pg 70 and don't see any related advice. 
    In the meantime, no data, just like the last upgrade problem.  Since this is exclusively related to calendar, I must conclude whatever events file that existed  was lost in the process.  Although the US, FRENCH, AND GERMAN HOLIDAYS DID GET TRANSFERRED!  And a recurring event file also (time card every Friday)
    Ideas?

  • Lost ALL DATA after OS update on MAC.

    Coming back from Walt Disney World with my daughter during the holidays.  Took some nice pictures with my BB Curve 8530.  Once back home, try to download all the picture on my macbook using the desktop manager.  Plugged my BB using the provided cable, then immediately was proposed to update my device software.  So the update go on.  Took a while and finally was asked to restore my data on the device, which of course I accepted.  Took about a quarter of a second, then done!  So unplugged the device from the computer and surprise!  Nothing, Nada, Zero...  All my contacts, media, email, everything was wiped very clean.  I'm kind of furious. 
    I've done some research over several forum it append to A LOT of people.  Some were lucky enough to find a backup file on there system, but nothing on mine searching with spotlight.
    RIM as no right at all to erase all the data on my device.  I was never warned and I never accepted the risk associated with that update.
    I'm asking for a solution to get back all my data.

    i finally got around to upgrading to IOS5 last night and also got an error whilst restoring the back up. I also assumed the date would be there.
    now i've restored my phone all apps etc have returned to phone but lost all data from them, ive lost all my contacts and diary appointments etc.
    Nightmare!

    My Contacts lost all data suddenly today. I upgraded to 10.8.2 this afternoon. Could that have caused it?  Can I do to retrieve my data?

    I found the hidden data file but get messge "There is no application set to open the document "AddressBook.data." and I have not been able to choose one that works.
    My latest attempt was to go to ~library/Application Support/addressbook. Instuctions said to remove "AddressBook.data" and "AddressBook.data.previous" to another spot for safety, then copy "AddressBook.data.previous" back into the file.  Nothing happened. 
    Any other ideas?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    You can only restore them from a backup. This has occurred because you are sharing an iCloud account. ideally you should each have your own iCloud account, that way you can each manage your own mail, contacts, calendars, documents etc and avoid unintentional deletions and unwanted editing. If there is information you wish to share between you, this can be done with a secondary account.
    Having separate iCloud accounts, doesn't mean you have to have separate iTunes accounts, so whilst you keep your personal data separate, you can continue to share music, apps, books, TV shows, movies etc.

    DId you power it off ond then back on?
    Did you reset the iPod?
    I would try resertting the iPod. Noting is lost.
    Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

    If you purchased it from the Adobe Online store, you should be able redownload the software from your account. Then you should back it up to an external drive or to DVDs so that you can restore it again if you need to.

    Apple doesn't care if you buy a newer phone or not.  Apple doesn't need your new iPhone purchase.  There are millions of people that have properly working older iPhones that voluntarily upgrade.
    Your device crashed, and it could have been caused by any number of root causes, many of them not controlled by Apple.  Third party app, interruption of internet connection, interruption of power, etc.
