  • I did something stupid, and lost all my photos in iPhoto

So, I thought I was in a specific Album with 5 photos in it I wanted to remove from iPhoto. I hit Apple-A to select all and hit delete. It wasn't until a moment later that I realized I must have actually been in my Library, and removed ALL my photos from iPhoto.
Now, all the Albums still appear in the left of iPhoto (6.0, BTW), but when I click on the albums, no photos appear. I went through my hard drives and dragged the appropriate photos back to their original Albums to reimport them into iPhoto. This worked fine with old photos I had organized BEFORE I switched to importing everything in iPhoto.
When I try to import those newer photos, the ones imported through iPhoto over the past couple of years, I keep getting the following error: "The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)." The files are fine...I'm just trying to import them from their organized roll folder in the iPhoto folder under Photos. Sometimes, I will also get an error that says the file is "already in the iPhoto library."
Is there some kind of preference or something I need to delete so I can reimport these photos from the iPhoto folder into iPhoto again?

    EditThis:
If you did not empty the iPhoto Trash via the iPhoto menu the photos will still be in the iPhoto trash container in the Source pane. Click on the trash icon, select all of the photos and drag to the Library icon at the top of the Source pane. They will be returned to their rolls and albums.
The reason you're getting that message is you're trying to import photos that are within the iPhoto Library folder. That can't be done.

  • Also lost all my photos on iPhoto. Where'd they go???

    Hey
I've been following a topic for a while now, as someone was having a similar problem, however mine is slightly different.
I kept all my photos on iPhoto, with albums and photobooks created on it.
I was attempting to copy some of my photos into new albums to burn onto a cd, but was told those photos were still in use.
When I couldn't find what their use was, I restarted the computer. When I reloaded iPhoto after restart, all the photos, albums and photobooks were gone.
I went to user/pictures/iphoto library and can see the data/modified/originals folders are all still there, all containing the photos.
Also performed a search on Finder for jpg images over 500kbs and found them all once again.
The question is, why are they no longer in iPhoto, and where did my photobooks and new albums I created go?
    Please help!

    1. Try rebuild the database: Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    2. IF that doesn't work then you may have a corrupted database file. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, then copy the library6.iphoto file from your back up to the iPhoto Library Folder, allowing it to overwrite the file there.
    3. If you don't have a back up, then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • I lost all my photos in iPhoto after I updated the iPhoto thumbnails.  How do I get my pictures back?

After I updated the thumbnails, my iPhoto could not even open, but when I did, all my photos were gone.  Is there a way to recover those photos that I lost?

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I Lost all my photos in iPhoto by upgrading and clicking on the wrong Library when restarting.... I also deleted iLibrary on accident because I thought it was just a pointless Logo in my Pictures folder! How do I get them Back?!!

I was trying to clean up my computer and put things on my exteranl hard drive and then delete the items off my computer. When I was going through the pictures I saw a file named "iLibrary" and just saw a little picture for it, so I deleted that as well..... Later on, when I was trying to show my events in the Finder There was a problem and no pictures were showing up, just empty Events. So I went to the dock and quit iPhoto. When I re-clicked it to open again iPhoto asked me if I wanted to upgrade iPhoto, So I clicked yes, then hesitated. "What if all my pictures get deleted' I thought. Then it asked me where I wanted to re-open from and I just click open to the Library that was the 'default'. It was also the ONLY option to click! When it opened I didn't have any of my photos any more. Just a couple events it had selected from my external hard drive!!! I heard I could recover all my photos by going to the Finder and clicking on Pictures then right clicking on iLibrary then go to "Show Package Contents". Unfortunently like I mentioned earlier I had just previously DELETED that!!! It doesn't end there either, just to make matters worse, I "Emptied" the TRASH CAN TOO!! Now what do I do?? I just had a baby 8 weeks ago and ALL ALL ALL the pictures were on there! I was starting to save them to my external hard drive when all this happened! Someone PLEASE help me!!

Do you have a back up?
If not you're into using file recovery software like  File Salvage - you can download a free trial and it will scan the disk for you and tell you with might be recoverable. Actual recovery will require that you purchase the app. There may be many files with the same or similar names. Always recover the largest file size.
There are other such apps. Search on Macupdate or the App Store

  • I lost all my photos in iphoto and picture project

I have a Mac OS X version 10.3.9, and the iphoto is version 4.0.3
i emptied my trash, and then went through the applications and deleted the ones i don't use (such as PDA and palm pilot applications and the games that i will never play). After i was done, i went back to iphoto and all the albums and pictures were gone. I went into picture project (a nikon software) and those pictures were gone, but had the little boxes of blank pictures. My desktop originally had a picture on it that i downloaded from a camera was gone as well. when i logged onto another account those pictures were still there. When i logged back onto my account, my desktop picture came back, leading me to believe that my pictures are still there. But those are gone too. Is there anyway i can retrive my pictures? I really hope they are not gone! I have too many pictures...and only half of them backed up! =(

i'm talking about the desktop trash. I don't know how to empty the iphoto trash.
No, i didn't delete anything with iphoto. i know i can delete duplicates, and still keep one of the pictures, i have done that before. I did delete Chess, Deimos Rising, Ambrosia Software Web, Kinoma, Palm, PDA Shop Lists, PDA Money, PDA Safe ID, Splash ID, Splash Money, Splash Shopper.
I logged under a different user name, and all those pictures were still in iphoto and picture project.
No, i did not contradict myself. The desk top picture did come back, leading me to believe that all the photos were still there. However, when i checked the iphoto and picture project, those were still gone.

  • I seem to have lost all my photos in iPhoto, error code 36,

I went to open iphoto and received an error message, asking me to restore iphoto. I do have a backup but not sure how to restore. I thought I would just update iphoto with a new version, but my operating system is too old. How do I get all (14,000) photos off this computer. I have tried to transfer my iphoto library to an external hard drive but the 'finder cant complete operation because some data in iphoto cant be read or written - error code 36. please help

You're asking a lot of unrelated questions there, and some of them would interfere with the answers to others.
I went to open iphoto and received an error message, asking me to restore iphoto
What's the exact error message you get?
I do have a backup but not sure how to restore
How to restore depends on how you made the back up?
I thought I would just update iphoto with a new version, but my operating system is too old.
You can update via the Support Downloads, just not to v9.5 or later. But it's probably best to fix the issue before you update.
How do I get all (14,000) photos off this computer.
HOw doees this relate to the error message from iPhoto? What do you want to get off? Just the Photos? Or the iPhoto Library? And to where?
Which questions do you want help with?

  • I recently lost all my photos on Iphoto and I get this message:

"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable."  When I follow the instructions it givves me, nothing happens.  It just keeps going back to the same error message.  Are my pics gone forever?

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • I recently had to restore my macbook air and lost all my photos.

I recently had to restore my macbook air and lost all my photos from iPhotos and documents from Pages.  Is there anyway I can restore them? frustrated is an understatement.

nope. not without any kind of backup.

  • I upgraded to OSX and lost all my photos from Ilife acan I get them back

I upgraded to OSX and lost all my photos from Iphoto, can I get them back.

Are you sure, you are viewing the correct iPhoto library? iPhoto may have created a new Library.
Hold down the alt/options  key ⌥, while you double click iPhoto to launch it.  Is there more than one Photo Library in the panel that opens? Then try the other libraries, if your photos are in there.

  • I lost all my Photo's in IPHOTO

    Hello,
I lost all my Photo's in IPHOTO today
I will try to outline what I have done. Some months ago I took old photograph-files of my windows computer by means of an external hard disk. Afterwards I had the following experience: each time that I started Iphoto I received a note "13 photos have been found in the iPhoto Library that were not imported." Then it tells me "The photos have been placed in a folder. The folder is stored in my file/images/library/no..... it counts up every day. Today it reached no. 56. I tried to throw away all that garbage. By means of finder I have gone to the images/library and saw those 56 items listed there. I wanted them all thrown away at the same time. I have slid them then all 56 in each other, then you hear a sound of 'plik' every time and when done I dragged to the dustbin. As I returned to Iphoto, everything was empty 244 folders with over 28,000 photo' s. The files are all grey. If I select a photo then I get a light grey screen with !-sign. What remaine are the file-names and the numbering of the 28,000 photo's. So I have 28,000 grey screens but without the photo's that correspond with them.
I tried to import Photo's with the Iphoto- archive-import button from the library in finder. But there were only the 56 files with the 13 photo's that could'nt be opened every time I started Iphoto.
I already tried to restore it by finder, but the photo's are not listed there.
I'am desperate. I hope that someone can help me.

FileSalvage will only find image files. You won't be able to recover your library as it was previously.
The Originals folder will be inside the iPhoto Library package. You can open the package like this. Look inside the Originals folder and it's subfolders for your image files. If they are not there then continue with FileSalvage. If you find that your image files are still inside their subfolders you can partially recreate your library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
In the future NEVER go inside the iPhoto LIbrary package from the finder and consider using the tip at the end of my signature below.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • For reasons best left unsaid, in a recent rebuild of my iMac andTime Capsule, I lost all my photos. I do however currently have them on my iPad. Is it possible to retrieve all my photos from the iPad back to iPhotos (now Photos) on my iMac?

For reasons best left unsaid, in a recent rebuild of my iMac and Time Capsule, I lost all my photos. I do however have them all currently on my iPad. Is it possible to retrieve my photos from the iPad back to iPhotos (now Photos) on my iMac?

have the photos on the iPad been taken with the iPad camera or imported using the camera connection kit?
Or have they been synced to the iPad with iTunes?
You can download any photos to your mac by connecting the iPad by USB to to your Mac and import to Phots, but this way only photos from the Camera Roll will be imported.  If your photos have been synced with iTunes, you can only mail them to your mac.
See:  iOS: Syncing photos using iTunes
You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures taken by your device, or saved to it, from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device, email the photos from the device to yourself. Then download the photos from the emails to your computer.

  • Updating to iPhoto 9.5.1 lost all my photos. How can I retreive them?

Updating to iPhoto 9.5.1 lost all my photos. How can I retreive them?
I'm on a MacBook Pro using OS X version 10.9.5.
When I attempted to edit a photo in the version I had at the time, I got a message that I must update to iPhoto 9.5.1 to use that function. So I did so. When I reopened iPhoto, all my photos were gone. I looked for them in finder but found none of my photos there in the iPhoto library either.
My Time Machine backup, directs me back to iPhoto.
I just want to re-load my photos. Can you help?

What do you see when you launch iPhoto? How big is your iPhoto library? Where is it located?
Directions for using Time Machine to restore are at the bottom of this article - Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
And note you NEVER use the finder to access your photos - you only access them using the proper tools - How to Access Files in iPhoto
