Lost all my photos... Can anyone help?

Have been spending the afternoon trying yet again to copy all my photos to an exernal hardrive to make some room. Managed to copy the library i thought, but then realised that when i del;eted something form the library on the mac, it also deleted from the library on the hardrive.
So i tried again to copy the library on the mac to the hardrive in a number of ways, lost track of all the ways now, and then suddenly all the images disapperared, leaving 1000 empty borders.
Any ideas how to get them back anyone? Please?
And also, once theyre back, any ideas about the best way to save them on the external hardrive so i can delete them from the mac?
And lastly.... 2 years ago, when someone tried to help me and moved 2000 photos to an extrernal hardrive and then deleted the photos from the mac, the whole lot disappeared from both mac and from external hardrive. Does anyone know if theres any scope for getting those back at all?

Thanks for answering. I can't find them. There are marks depicting where the photos used to be - like frames - so I'm thinking there must be a way to find them, but am not experienced enough to know how.
I've tried launching iphoto and pressing alt and command and then ticking all 4 options of how to rebuild... but none of this has worked, the empty frames are still there though, sjhowing the date te roll was taken etc.
My main problem is I have a load of video footage to put on the laptop, i was trying to make space for this when i lost the photos, as I'm making a film for friends who are leaving the country next week, and so I'm looking for a really quick option.
Can you give me any other tips about where to look etc please???

My iMac was returned to me following a repair by Apple - they did a clean wipe & reinstall.
I backed up all my photos beforehand (I was previously using LR4).
I just upgraded to LR5 and have imported all the photos. However, I appear to have lost all the work I did in LR4 - all my edits, and 'flagged' images etc. Is there any way of recovering this? Otherwise I've lost several weeks worth of work.

This means the files are not in the location that the catalog was expecting.
You need to EITHER mirror exactly the file structure of your old machine OR right click (cmd-click?) on your highest level folder within Lightroom and select "Update Folder Location". This should bring up a window that allows you to browse to the new location of your photos and select it. If there's not a high level folder that covers all your photos you'll need to do this one folder at a time.
Tutorials are a good idea if you're un-clear about anything but the Catalog is essentially "just" a database. It stores the locations of all of your files, the metadata associated with them and all the adjustments you've made.

Thanks Kurt! I had tried all that and had tried closing both programmes from the application monitor, but SyncServices Agent refused to close. I tried closing Launchd which is their mother application, but that just caused the screen go go blank. In the end the two programmes let themselves be closed next time I tried the installation process so all was well. Thanks for your help!

The "restore disk" is built into the Mac. See About Recovery.
Need more specifics about what error messages you got while installing Adobe Flash.
However, you can almost avoid Flash altogether by setting YouTube to play the HTML5 version instead.
Click the Try something new! link at the bottom of the YouTube page.
I don't know about the sound issue. Might be hardware as you think. Try other headphones to check.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Enabling iTunes Match does not delete music from your computer. Why do you think it is now not in the iTunes library if it was before? If all of your music was in the iTunes library then it is also now in the cloud if iTunes has completed it's scan and all the music meets the match requirements. Enable the iCloud Status column in the iTunes browser by switching to Song view and pulling down View > View Options. Select iCloud Status then close the small window. Sort on the new column. Your music should be listed as "purchased," "matched" and "uploaded." Some tracks may be "ineligible." Post back and let us know.

i had a problem with my computer about a year ago and had to do a full system restart, when this was done all of my songs on itunes was missing and i havent been able to find them since, iv tried all the usual places and followed guidence from itunes trouble shooting but with no success, no at a loss, can anyone help?

Does not seem to be really important if it's been a year since they were "lost".
Do you have a backup of your media and other important files? If so, restore them from your backup.
If this is content that was purchased via iTunes, you are in the US, and running iTunes 10.3 it is possible to redownload the content via the iCloud functionality.
Simply go to your iTunes account purchase history and select the option to download the content.

Earlier in the week, I did a softare version upgrade for my iphone, unfortunatly at the time I did the upgrade the E:\ where all my itunes files are kept was not plugged in and so when I tried to sync later itunes could not find any of my files. I thought I had resolved the problem after I eventually managed to sync my iphone, however, when I plugged in the itoch last night, it wipped the whole of my E:\. I have managed to restore the E:\ and after several attempts, re-loading itunes, restoring the itouch, restoring my pc, I am still not managing to plug my itouch in without it erasing everything on my E:\, it doesn't even have to sync, just plug it in and watch everything disapear, please can anyone help?

I recently bought a second-hand ipod classic. When connecting to itunes the message reads that the ipod is corrupt and needs to be restored to factory settings. Normally unknown error is due to timeout, cause by
connected to slow USB port at the front of the PC, or using USB Hubs - Better connect to the USB HUb at the back of the PC. (Some Laptop, has only one High Power -USB2.0 port
USB resource low, due to sharing of other USB devices - Disconnect all other USB devices when Restoring.
Winsocks conflict with iTunes - Disconnect Internet and Stop firewall and Antivirus, emails apps.
