Lost cd/dvd drive - selected "remove safely"

Hi,
I was ejecting my CD from my CD drive on my HP laptop.  Instead of ejecting I selected remove device or hardware safely like I was removing an USB.  Once I did this I lost the CD/DVD drive and I don't know how to get it back.
I looked for the device in the control panel, the Device Manager and I didn't see the CD/DVD drive.  In fact, the drive what was "F" is no longer available.  "F" is gone.
Do I add a drive "F"?  Now sure what to do.
Thanks so much!!

Well, damned if I know what happened, but I rebooted to get ready for Combo Update and the CD/DVD drive reappeard! It works fine now.
I had rebooted several times after the problem occurred so rebooting wasn't the simple fix.
Sorry to alarm anyone about this problem.

  • Lost CD/DVD Drive after 10.5.8 Update

After updating from 10.5.7 (which had no problems) to 10.5.8 my CD/DVD drive disappeared! System Profiler (under Hardware/Disc Burning) says: "No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly."
There was a disc in the drive at the time of the update and now I am unable to eject it. If it is relevant the disc is a Windows XP installation disc.
Any ideas what I should do.

  • I lost my DVD driver during an upgrade

Hi-This is new to me.  When I tried to install a program from a CD it wouldn't read it.  When I searched devices it said my driver had been disabled and showed there is none there.  I have a Pavilion G71-340US notebook that had lightscribe installed, and has since been removed via an upgrade and no replacement driver had been installed.  I went to the HP Drivers and Downloads web and didn't get very far.
    Help!
    Les

    Hi Les,
The diver for the DVD/CD drive is supplied by the Windows operating system, so it's possible that there is a Hardware issue with the optical drive, but it may be worth trying the following.
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive is now working.
If the drive is not working, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

  • Read this for CD/DVD Drive with burning, missing drives, not seeing discs

Seeing lots of the same posts with the same solutions being applied (mostly upper/lower control filters/MS Fixit)... so I thought I'd put this up for everyone.

Drive Cannot Write to Writable Discs (Windows Vista)
Drive Cannot Write to Writable Discs (Windows 98, ME, XP)
    Summary:
    1) Try different discs! Cheap discs can be hit or miss. Find a disc brand and type that works best.
    2) Try burning at a slower speed (not the best option, but can often get the job done if the laser is fading).
    3) Remove drive from Device Manager and remove upper/lower filters (see below).
    4) Use MS System Restore to go back to a time when it was working.
    5) Use PC-Doctor/HP Hardware Diagnostic software to check for a bad drive.
    6) If the drive is not bad - save your files and use HP Recovery to put the system back to the beginning.

    1) See if the drive is listed in Device Manager (look for problems if it is).
    2) Check autoplay (skip if you don't use).
    3) Make sure a bad disc isn't knocking out the drive (an operating system mounts discs as drives and things can get screwed up).
    4) Try reading the disc from a command prompt environment (outside of Windows).
    5) Reinstall drive from Device Manager (if drive is listed). {I'd replace this with bigger process of remove upper/lower filters (see below)}.
    6) Use MS System Restore to go back to a time when it was working.

    2) Reset Power: Unplug power cord, press Power button for 10 seconds.
    3) Check power and data cables attached to the drive and look in the BIOS for the drive name.
    4) Remove upper/lower filters (see below).
    5) Reinstall burning software

Otherwise, here are the manual steps (overview):
    1) Uninstall the CD/DVD drive in Device Manager and DO NOT RESTART the computer.
    2) Uninstall your CD burning software (make sure you have the installation disc or you can resinstall from Start, Programs, PC Help and Tools, Recovery Manager (or Driver/Application Recovery). If you don't have the installation discs, skip this step - it might still work).
    3) Open the registry editor (Start -> Run -> enter Regedit) ... might want to make a backup of the registry at this point.
    4) Open the following keys:
     + HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
     + SYSTEM
+ CurrentControlSet (or the current control set with lowest number if that is all that is listed)
     + Control
     + Class
    5) Select 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318. It has to be this exact key - make sure you can see the last numbers!!!
    6) Delete the UpperFilter and or the LowerFilters value in the right window if either exists.
    7) RESTART the computer - this step is important. Wait for Windows to find and install the CD/DVD drive you removed earlier.
    8) Reinstall your burning software and restart the computer again.

That's why you want to make a backup of the registry. If you didn't make a backup, use MS system restore to go back. The only values you should remove are UpperFilter or LowerFilter - one or both may be in there and can be removed. If neither value exists, then that is probably why you can't burn and Windows is not recognizing your drive as a writable drive.

  • Need help with my missing dvd-driver

I've had my MacBook Pro since 2009 and I have updated to Mac OS X, Lion and then Mountain Lion over the years.. Well, somewhere along the way I have lost my dvd driver. I don't know if it was because I installed a third part dvd driver or not but I am currently unable to burn music through iTunes. When inserting a blank cd to my macbook, iTunes does not seem to detect it. I know the newer MBPs don't have a dvd driver anymore and I don't know if any of this is related to my problem or if it's something totally different. I am wondering if I'm the only person having this issue. Please suggest options I could take to resolve this issue. Thank you.

There is no driver. Never was.
"When inserting a blank cd to my macbook, iTunes does not seem to detect it"
You need to set up what you want to happen when you insert a cd into your MacBook Pro(?). System Preferences>CD's & DVD's.

  • HT1727 how do you get the drivers for a dvd drive

since upgrading to windows 8. I have lost my dvd drive.
Cannot use the drive for either running a cd or writing one.

This has nothing to do with iTunes.

Hi. I am getting the following 2 error messages. I just did a clean re-install of Windows 7 and for the first 3 weeks I had no issues at all (could be unrelated). I am not initiating anything. My laptop is doing this by itself. It just randomly on its own
tries to remove my DVD-ROM. Then it is unable to do it b/c the device is still in use. I have tried searching for this issue and cannot find any other threads. It clicks and beeps and does this all day long - it interrupts my work. The DVD player works just
fine, and when I right-click Properties - it says driver is up to date and device is working. So there appears to be no issues with the device itself... rather that my computer is operating in phantom mode - trying to safely remove hardware on its own that
I am not trying to remove. I have actually gone ahead and removed the DVD drive just to see if it would help, then put it back in, and the problem persists. I am running Window7 64-bit OS. Please help me stop this annoying problem! Thanks!

    Hi,
The reson why I share KB555665 with you is that we can refer to the instruction to use Process Explorer to view what happened with the drive. We can view the detailed process of the drive and find out what is handling\controlling it.
Or there may be some hardware or software that is interfering with the CD or DVD drive. You can test this after restarting your computer in a clean boot state

If this issue disappears in this mode, then we can go on to find out the cause. Detailed instructions about How-To are included in KB 929135

  • Lost DVD drive

When I install iTunes for Windows on my hp4500 it puts in a registry entry that disables the DVD driver. When I remove this registry entry (as recommended by HP) iTunes complains that an essential registry entry is missing. Is there a workaround?

Step 4: Clear the upper and lower registry filters
    Clear the registry filters for Device Manager error codes 10 , 19 , 31 , 32 , 39 or 41 using the following steps:
       1.
Click the following Microsoft Fix it Solution to clean the registry filters automatically:
If you cannot use the Microsoft Fix it Solution, continue using these steps to clear the upper and lower registry filters manually.

       3.
Click Start , and type "regedit " into the Start Search field.
          The registry editor window appears.
       4.
Select Computer in the main window.
       5.
Click File , Export , type a filename that is easy for you to remember, and click Save .
A copy of the registry has saved for back-up purposes to the Documents folder. If problems occur after using these steps, browse to the file and double-click it to restore the registry.
       6.

Select the LowerFilters value and press the Delete key. Confirm the deletion by clicking Yes .

If an UpperFilters value is also listed, select UpperFilters in the right window and press the Delete key.

Delete all other UpperFilter and LowerFilter values within the 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 key if they exist.
      11.
Close the registry editor and restart the computer. The disc drive should now be recognized by Windows. You may need to uninstall your disc recording software, restart the computer, reinstall the CD/DVD writing software, and then restart the computer again if the software no longer recognizes the drive (see next step).
Reinstalling or doing a delete and install of itunes does not work. This problem has been repeated in XP, Vista and 7. If you can reccommend a solution it would be appreciated.

  • Removing CD/DVD Drive

I have the Satellite A305-S6829 and not only does my webcam no longer work or be recognized, my CD/DVD drive is not recognized either. I have troubleshooted this extensively and the drivers are current now but it is not recognized. Im thinking perhaps the cable inside has become disconnected or even loose. Is there any documentation somewhere (preferrably with some pictures) on how to take apart the laptop with the screws on the bottom and to open the back so I can see if anything is loose or to remove/replace my CD/DVD drive? Thank you very much.

After running bootcamp, DVD drive is detected by Windows 8. But after installing drivers, no longer can detect. Device Manager shows that DVD drive is unplugged! Drivers in Bootcamp “removed” the DVD drive. I think there is an issue because I reinstalled Windows 8. If I don't install driver, then I have reduced functionality (no Apple keyboard, no sound etc), but once I install driver, I lose my DVD drive.

Hi, guys, I have had the exact same problem since the summer of 2010. Here's what I was able to find out.
Deleting upper/lower filters, running all those Fix Ya programs and other Microsoft crap is useless. This problem is most certainly has nothing to do with registry of any software on your computer. I took my HP 9620us to a couple of repair places and, they tried a lot of things and it appears that the root of this problem is a faulty motherboard connection. Of course, it costs about 400 bucks to fix it so I'm not sure I want to pay this kind of money.
Anyway, if somebody was able to fix it PLEASE post here to let us know. Again I am 99 per cent sure it's some piece of hardware in the motherboard.

  • DVD drive removed on Asus computer when updating itunes

If you experience this issue on a Mac, disconnect third-party devices, hubs, spare cables, displays, reset the SMC, and then try to restore. If you are using a Windows computer, remove all USB devices and spare cables other than your keyboard, mouse, and the device, restart the computer, and try to restore. If that does not resolve the issue, try the USB issue-resolution steps and articles listed for Error 1604 above. If the issue persists, it may be related to conflicting security software.

I'm trying to install OS 10.6 onto my Macbook, which currently has OS 10.5.8. I clicked install (on the DVD) and selected my Macintosh HD drive. I was given the message that that disk cannot be used because it does not have the GUID partition. In order to have a GUID partition, it suggested I go to disk utility and make the change. I couldn't see the partition tabs in the disk utility application. So how do I accomplish the GUID partition?

The problem is, reformatting the partition may require you erase the hard drive.   Normally Intel Macs are preformatted GUID.    The fact that yours is not, says someone who initially installed the system on your Mac did you a disservice.   Regardless, you should backup your data before you upgrade.  GUID formatted drives generally are not compatible with iBooks (pre-2006 consumer notebooks by Apple) Powerbooks, and PowerMacs, and iMac G5s.    So if you indeed have machine with the MacBook name on the screen frame, it was not properly formatted from the beginning.
