Lost changes to DNG when opening in Photoshop CS3

I am losing changes that have been made to DNG files when opening these files in Photoshop CS3. I added my Canon CR2 RAW files to Lightroom, made changes to the images in Lightroom (exposure, contrast, color correction, etc) and then exported the images as DNG files. Now, when I open any of these DNG files in Photoshop CS3 or Lightroom 2.1 all of the changes are completely lost. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Thank you for your replies to this problem. Yes, I did in fact upgrade to ACR 4.6 on 10/07. The problem that I have it that only a few of the thousands of images I worked on remain in Lightroom at this point. I worked on the files in Lightroom, exported them as DNG files to retain the changes and then removed them from Lightroom.
I have narrowed the problem down to a specific date of 10/21. I noticed that all of the DNG files that I am having problems with were modified on this date and will not open in ACR while retaining the changes I made in Lightroom. If I go through my backup and pull the same DNG file prior to 10/21, it opens in ACR perfectly and retains all of my Lightroom modifications.
What I want to determine here is two things. One, how to recover the Lightroom information in the DNG files that have been corrupted so the file opens in ACR as intended. Two, how to prevent this from ever happening again. I am happy to post samples of the problematic DNG files, as well as, the older backup versions that are working correctly. Any insight to this issue would be greatly appreciated.

  • Picture changes from Bridge when opened in Photoshop

My program is Adobe CS6 Design and Web Premium.  When I open a picture in Bridge in Camera Raw and chang it to the way I want and open it in Photochop Extended the background has lightened and some of the other atributes has been changed.  Is this a normal occurance or is there an upgrade that I can download and correct this problem/  I am opening  a pictur with a jpg extension.

You may have Photoshop set to open file only in your selected color space: say AdobeRGB, but the file you're trying to open is sRGB.  There is a dialog box that comes up to warn you of the mismatch, but it you clicked to ignore this dialog box, Photoshop may be converting the images.  Clear your preferences and see if this dialog box appears.

  • When opening a Photoshop file with Bridge, how can I control which version of Photoshop the file wil

When opening a Photoshop file fthrough Bridge, how can I control which version of Photoshop the file will open in?
I store my PSD files adjacent to the original RAW file from which it was derived.
If I open the file folder and double click on that PSD file, it opens in CS6. But,if I use Bridge (CS6) to navigate to and open the same file, it first opens Photoshop CS5 and then opens that PSD file in CS5.
How can I control which Photoshop will open a file I select when opening it through Bridge?.

Interesting, but it doesn't give a clue what I'm supposed to do. No Photoshop ducuments listed.
Look at the PSD file on the location Curt provided and search for Photoshop Document. Next to it ideally should show Adobe Photoshop CS6 if you have Bridge CS6 open. Click on it to provide the fly out menu and choose the correct Photoshop from the list.
But probably something went wrong with your install. By default Bridge chooses the latest version of PS to open its file in.
Maybe a reset of the preferences might also help you. Can you provide more details about OS version etc.
And do you have a good reason for keeping your Raw and finished files in the same location. Personally I keep them apart and use a proper file name convention (yyyymmdd and details) so I can easily search for the DNG files in my archive if I needed them but I don't make mistakes in opening the wrong one

  • Reset "Change All" option when opening files

I accidentally hit "Change All" under "Get Info" when I was changing which application I wanted to open a specific file, and need to reset it.
Before I accidentally did this, the computer was able to tell which program had created a certain file and the proper program opened when I double clicked on the file.
I use both Photoshop and Illustrator, both of which create .eps files, now all .eps files open in Illustrator due to my previous error, but I only want .eps files actually created by Illustrator to open with illustrator, and .eps files created by Photoshop to open in Photoshop.
I have thousands of files that I work with, and I can't go to each individual file and tell the computer which program to open it with. Also, if I save out a new .eps file from Photoshop, the computer STILL thinks it needs to be opened with Illustrator, and I have to manually change it or drag it to the Photoshop icon in my dock.
I have a Mac Pro running the latest version of Snow Leopard
    Please help!

no. under "open with" it shows illustrator, and I have to manually and individually change it.... if I create a new file in photoshop, I have to then go to where I saved it, hit command+i and change it back to open with photoshop because even when I save out new files, by default the computer thinks I want to open all .eps files with illustrator.

  • DSLR JPG images crystal clear in iPhoto but blurry when opened in Photoshop CS5.

I own the CS5 master collection. I recently purchased a new Retina Macbook Pro. 15" 16gb RAM, 512gb flash, 2Gb Nvidia. For some reason, my crystal clear dslr photos are appearing blurry when opened in photoshop. In iPhoto they look sharp. Any ideas? Any help would be much appreciated. I'm losing my mind over here!

If you imported your image files into iPhoto, Photoshop cannot see the original files and is showing you just the tiny embedded JPEG thumbnail.  Blame iPhoto.
iPhoto buries your images in its entrails as packages no other software can get at.  What you need to do is to EXPORT your images first into some folder Photoshop and other software can see.  You have to do this from within iPhoto itself after launching that d@mned Apple application.

No, the serial number goes with the product. You should deactivate all your installed copies before selling it. Also, if you've used it qualify for upgrade pricing on a later version you can't sell it. Well, you could but the new owner won't be able to install it.

  • Any solutions for lost render/preview files when opening files?s

Have any solutions been found for the intermittent lost render/preview files when opening a large file? I have Premiere CS6. A large project file that I have been working on lately opened without a hitch with previews intact ...until I bought new faster hard drives and rebuilt the computer (built with the same drive letters). I just installed the latest updates. When I now open this file, a segment of the sequence always opens without previews, unrendered, no matter how many times I rendered the file previously. I don't use 3rd party plugins. I am using the warp stabilizer. I tried all the suggestions that I have found on the forums (using a blank sequence to close and open, unchecking “write XMD…” etc.) but none work. I checked the render/preview drive, and these files are on that drive but they will no longer link to the project. It now takes a good 15 minutes to re-render every time I open.

I may have found a solution. I took out the warp stabilizer, and then added it back in on the clips in question, and then re-analysed and re-rendered. So far, so good. It seems that bringing in the warp stabilizer effect in the file into the re-built computer needed re-analysing (as I do after this 2 day exercise.)

  • Why does Lightroom color not match when editing in Photoshop CS3

I just started Using Lightroom 4, the only version of lightroom that I have used. Short version, saves me heaps of time. But I went to edit more in photoshop and noticed that the color is dramatically different. I have Photoshop CS3 (10.0.1)and the color space is ProPhoto to match lightroom. If I make edits in lightroom, say removing dust spots, it shows in the photoshop version. It seems that on the shadow side is where it really shows. My workflow would be to import as original RAW in lightroom 4 (canon 1d mark II) and go about editing. Right click to edit in Photoshop CS3, and this is where colors go crazy. Then if I save the file with no edits done in Photoshop and compare side by side in lightroom, they are completely different. What is causing the drastic difference?
These are screenshots where in the left screenshot the original image is the dark image and the lighter is what it looks like when opened in Photoshop. The compare in lightroom on the right screenshot is what it looks like when I saved the file from Photoshop. So how does opening in Photoshop, then hitting save change the image? If i make the edit in lightroom then export the jpeg and open in photoshop, I get the appropriate color, exactly the same as my original lightroom raw.
My external editor settings in lightroom are tiff, prophoto colorspace.
photoshop preferences are to preserve embedded profiles.

Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing, when you "Edit in" Photoshop CS3, it should give a warning dialog that says the version of ACR in Photoshop isn't compability, with the option "Open anyway" (won't work well) or "Render in Lightroom" (which should be fine).  Or, if you've created your own "Edit in" preset, you should get the option "Edit a copy with Lightroom Adjustments".
So long as you've chosen "Render in Lightroom" or "Edit a copy with Lightroom Adjustments" (depending on how you've edit up "Edit in...") then colour should be OK.
Colour options in PS should be something like:
Check all the "Ask when..." options, just to make sure you get warned of mis-matches.  And I suggest the RGB policy should be "preserve...".
And the final thing: to be sure of no colour mis-match, you need a calibrated/profiled monitor (with a hardware tool like Spyder, ColorMunki, Eye-One etc).  When there isn't a monitor profile containing a colour space (which needs a hardware tool, generally) then different programs can make different assumptions and display the same image differently.

You are now chatting with Vijay Kanna .
Vijay Kanna : Hello! Welcome to Adobe Customer Service.
    Vijay Kanna : Hi Ilia.
Vijay Kanna : Please allow me a moment while I  review your request.
    Ilia: Hello! Ok, I'm waiting.
Vijay Kanna : I have read your request.
Vijay Kanna : I will be glad to help you with the information.
Vijay Kanna : I would first like to inform you that this application you have is a Volume Licensing Product for CS3 for which its not possible to make changes on the license activation seats.
Vijay Kanna : Usually the Volume Licensing Product will not provide such error as this type of error will only show up with retail (single) user application.
Vijay Kanna : If you use the correct download link from the licensing account for this particular application or the CDs for this particular application you will not get such errors.
Ilia: Ok. Where I can download distributive of CS3 (we lost our box with CD or DVD)?
Vijay Kanna : If the CDs are lost and you have not purchased the application as a download then its not possible to find the download link for this application now as the current shipping version with Adobe is CS6.
Vijay Kanna : Adobe at the moment only has the CDs and download link for CS6.
Ilia: It means that we couldn't install our CS3 on new PC? What can we do in this case?
Vijay Kanna : You will have to locate the original CDs or your next option is to purchase the current version which is CS6.
Vijay Kanna : Also the CS3 is not compatible on Windows 7 or any other latest OS.
Vijay Kanna : Is there anything else I can help you with?
Ilia: Yes? wait a momemt please/ I consult with my boss/
    Vijay Kanna : Okay.
Vijay Kanna : Are we still connected?
    Ilia: Yes
    Vijay Kanna : Okay.
Vijay Kanna : Do you have any further questions for me today?
    Ilia: Yes, wait a moment.
Vijay Kanna : Sure. I will stay online.
Ilia: My colleague claims that a distribution kit with which we install the program on new PC is copied from lost CD.
Vijay Kanna : Ilia, the application is not installed this way. Also this error which you say "exceeded allowable activation" is not for a Volume Licensing Product and such error is only associated with the single user application.
Vijay Kanna : Hence, the installation file you have should be incorrect and for a single user application.
Ilia: Ok, thanks. We will try to find CD. Good-bye.
Vijay Kanna : You are welcome.
Vijay Kanna : Please click again to check with us, if we can be of further help.

  • Suddenly stopped getting dialog to edit with LR changes when opening in Photoshop

I have LR4 and PS CS5. Edited several photos this morning without a problem --But this evening, after editing in LR, clicked command+E to open in Photoshop- as I always do, but didn't get the dialog that gives me the option to edit with LR changes. The files are opening as raw instead of TIFF all of a sudden! I have done nothing different aside from updating the Kubota dashboard. Could that have messed things up? This is such a mystery and I have a job to finish! HELP!
I deleted the Kubota plug-in since that was the only thing I did out of the ordinary but still no luck. I am deserate to get images edited in LR transferred to PS WITH THE EDITS! Why would it work one minute and not the next???
Just tried to edit in Color Efex from Lightroom and got the dialogue. So...it's only happening with Photoshop. PLEASE help! I tried uninstalling Photoshop and reinstalling with updated Camera Raw 6.7 plugin. No luck....I need to finish a job!
    It worked fine this morning!
    Message was edited by: m.v.fiz

With ACR 6.7 installed to Photoshop CS5, even a PV2012 image coming from LR can be opened OK by Photoshop, with all adjustments correct - just the same in this respect, as when using CS6 with ACR 7.
AFAICT the difference being, ACR 6.7 is capable of making a "straight through" conversion employing the 2012 process version, but lacks any interface in which to view and adjust that.
So I suspect the issue here, is not that LR is doing anything wrong. Photoshop's settings need to allow an image that Lr is passing it, to open directly into the editor, wihtout trying to interact with that using the ACR window along the way. This  also means, you cannot properly interact with a Smart Object from inside PS, using ACR 6.7, either - when the image develop parameters involved belong to PV2012 (though you can, when these belong to an earlier PV).
IMO the solution probably lies in your PS or your ACR settings - whatever is in effect invoking ACR automatically when PS opens a TIFF. This is what you do not want to happen, for PV2012.
Prior to ACR 6.7, you would have needed to instead select the option "Render in LR" in order to see PV2012 adjustments properly. And you could still do that - leaving ACR with nothing to do, and so making its version compatibility moot - provided it stays out of the way..
Also, I believe that when instead of using the Ctrl+E or "Edit in PS" command, you make and use a named external editing preset, the interaction between LR and PS changes whereby an already-saved file is made on disk before PS sees anything. The other way, what PS opens is an as-yet-unsaved image.
[edit: one reason you are now not seeing a dialog that you did see before, is that ever since you installed ACR 6.7, Lr now realises that Ps has a 2012-compatible conversion - so you now stop getting the incompatibility warning that earlier ACR versions would have flagged up. If the dialog in question has been set to "always do this" (whatever "this" is) then you will just see LR and PS attempt to do that, without asking.
In Lr Preferences, General tab, you can "Reset all warning dialogs".]

  • Illustrator file losing quality when opened in photoshop...please help!

Hello, If anyone could help me I would be so grateful, i really am struggling to the point of tears here!!
I have simple line drawings in illustrator (outlines of clothes) that I wish to open in photoshop to add colour and effects to.
When i have tried to copy and paste (as normal paste, smart object, pixels, path and shape layer) the quality is lost.
I have also tried to open or place the file in photoshop as a .psd, .ai , .pfd and still the quality is lost.
I have saved with different resolution settings too, but it always loses quality when it is opened in photoshop.
Is there any way for me to have a clear line drawing like it is in illustrator in photoshop? And how should I go about it?
Thank You so much to anyone who can help, I really am at my wits end with this!
    Phoebe xx

Come on, Chris, I'm not buttoned up the back.
You told me last month when I complained about the poor quality of "paste as pixels" that Photoshop uses the raster in the clipboard so the raster must be poor and not Photoshop's rasterizing of vectors.
Re: Ps CS6 Problem: Incorrect rendering of pasted Adobe Illustrator vector objects
Now you say that Photoshop does not use the raster in the clipboard and does rasterize the vectors when "paste as pixels" is performed.
You can't have it both ways.
You've just confirmed what I said last month: Photoshop rasterizes the vectors even when pixels are present in the clipboard and "paste as pixels" is requested. Thank you.

  • Images look fine in Bridge, but way off when opened in Photoshop

Not sure what I've done to my system, but am now having some color-management woes. I am using Photoshop and Bridge CS5.1, and for some reason, the color-management is not consistent between Bridge and PS... although it used to be until just recently. I am on a Mac Pro tower with a properly calibrated monitor (using an Eye One Pro), and all my other color-managed applications are behaving just fine, but I have this discrepancy now within Adobe where if I view an image in Bridge, it looks correct, but when I open that same image in Photoshop, it comes up way too light and desaturated. I have verified that a correct profile is embeded in each image, but this happens regardless of the source file. I have opened up grayscale images with a dot gain or gamma profile embedded, images with no profile embedded, sRGB and Adobe 1998 profiled images, and they all open up too bright. It seems like some kind of conversion must be happening, but I can't understand what that would be. Color Settings is set to preserve embedded and ask when opening for mismatches, but that's the same as it's always been on my system. I understand without a "suite" install, I cannot access the Creative Suite Color Settings dialog to sync color across multiple Adobe apps, but things have been fine for years between my PS & Bridge, so clearly I've done something wrong. It's also worth noting that RAW images in Bridge open up looking identical in the Photoshop RAW processing dialog, so somehow this is more related to TIFF, PSD & JPEG files.
I have used the Cocktail app for general system maintenance on my Mac, and in the dialog to delete old cahce files, I do recall it had an option to clear Color Sync cache (along with a bunch of other caches), so maybe that "clean up" somehow dirsupted my color matching abilities?
I was on CS5 when I noticed this problem, so I tried uninstalling that, downloading the slightly newer CS5.1 and re-installing, but the problem persists. Maybe the uninstaller app doesn't get rid of all the hidden support files, or maybe this is something else entirely? Have trashed prefs files and relaunched, still same problem.
Note how image on right is much lighter, shadows start to look posterized, colors lose saturation. Left is Bridge and Right is Photoshop. Screenshot done on calibrated monitor.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

Thanks for your reply. Screenshot of my Color Settings attached. These are the same settings I've been using for many years.
What's most interesting is your reminder to look at Soft Proofing. I normally only use that when prepping an image for print, and want to predict what different paper types will "do" to my image.,, i.e. matte paper has less d-max, etc. SO, My assumption was that Soft Proofing is normally in the OFF position unless I turn it on, and/or toggle it on-off with Cmd-Y keyboard shortcut one engaged. BUT, your assessment was spot-on, in that when I opened up the View > Proof Colors dialog, it was set to Working CMYK. Not sure why, how, or when that became the default.
In all my time years with Photoshop, I've never needed to worry about soft proofing being ON without my permission, so I'm unclear how this came about. I honestly don't even know what the default has been for all the time that this was not on my radar as being a problem, I only know that when I did opt to soft proof an image, I woulp open the Proof Colors dialog, choose the appropriate device-specific paper profile to simulate, and then turn it back off when done. It would make sense to me that the default display in PS should match the (hopefully calibrated) monitor as a starting point.
Several more screenshots below, experimenting with various Proof conditions. This one is a 16-bit Grayscale image, with my usual 1.8 Gray Gamma color space embedded. This was my first experiment, not knowing what the correct default should have been (or was for many years). My assumption was that proofing the same color space as the document (G 1.8 = G 1.8), there should be no visible difference, but in fact there is. The left image is open in PS being soft proofed to it's own G 1.8 color space, and it appears visibly brighter than the same image to the right in Bridge.
Now here's the same comparison, with Proofing set to G 2.2, which should be wrong, but visually looks like a much better match.
Next I tried a color image, with Document Profile as the proof condition. Again, the Bridge image on the right looks correct, the PS image on the left looks washed out by comparison.
Here is the same image comparison, now with Monitor RGB enabled (which pulls my current monitor profile as the device to simuulate). I'd say this is either perfect, or a much better match. This also makes sense and correlates to my suspicion that PS should be showing you things in your native monitor profile until you ask it to do otherwise with a custom soft-proofing scenario.
So now that I think I've figured it out, I leave the Monitor RGB as the device to simulate, close the image, and re-open the image just to be sure, and this is what I get...
Essentially back to the same problem. I verified that View > Proof Colors is still set to my Monitor RGB, but it's as if it's not really being applied. SO, I changed it so something else, and then changed it back, and then it looks correct... as if I somehow need to kick it and remind it to do what it's already set to do.
So, the short answer is THANK YOU for reminding me to look at the proofing setup, becasue no I at least have a kind of workaround and know where to look. The tricker part is to understand why the default doesn't really stick to the Monitor RGB (if that is even the correct place for it to stay set to), and how or why did i get off into Working CMYK in the first place, as that's not a setting I've ever used on purpose.
    Thanks again,
    Eric
