Lost desktop files on restart!

I restarted my computer and some of my folders and files that were on the desktop werent there and I can't find them anywhere. Any idea what might have happened or how I can get them back?

I havent gotten it running yet- this was a previous problem to the computer not booting up. I just thought that I would ask now so that when/if I can get it to work again I might be able to locate the lost files. Losing the files was the reason that I restarted the computer again, and that is how I ran into the problem of it not booting up.

• Lost desktop files

When we closed out an imaging program, we noted that all the files and folders on the desktop were gone. just the Hard drive icon was there. There was maybe 15 folder with several GB total on the desktop. But the desktop was clean. The trash still had a lot of old files/folders, but nothing from the desktop was in the trash. This is very serious, and I'm wondering if anyone knows how a iMac could selectively delete so many files, w/o emptying the trash.
Thanks.

When we closed out an imaging program...
What does that mean? Does it mean that you quit the program? What program was it?

• Sos-desktop files deleted/system affected after restart

hello
A very strange "system failure" happend today.
I explain the way things happened:
1.firefox not responding
2.firefox restart
3.looked like firefox upgraded itself(not sure)
4.lost all bookmarks from the browser
5.decided to restart the powerbook
6.all system prefernces settings lost
7.MOST IMPORTANT-the system affected and all desktop files were deleted (or gone somewhere I still don't know).
note> I have tried the "bookmark recovery" for firefox. didn't work.
the thing that puzzles me more is the system's weird failure caused afterwards. why to delete the desktop files?
Last thought was to run a file recovery soft. but I don't have any installed, any suggestions?
Please, any insights are appreciated
thanx in advance

HI,
*"the thing that puzzles me more is the system's weird failure caused afterwards. why to delete the desktop files?"*
You need to boot from your install disk and check the hard disk using Disk Utility.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
Did you repair the disk with DiskWarrior as mentioned here?

Did you repair disk then?

• I unloaded some mp3 songs into desktop file by mistake, now I get a message Item "....." is used by Mac OS X and cannont be opened. How can I fix this

I am new to this support community. I was givin a stick with a bunch of music on it, I wanted to install it on my music and have never done any installations. The 3000 some songs got into my system 3 times so I have 6000 some in my desktop file and had ( I deleted or lost it somewhere??) 9000 some in my documents file. When I click on a song I get a message... Item "Alan Jackson - My Own Kind Of Hat 2.mp3" is used by Mac OS X and cannot be opened.
1. What can I do to clean these files out ?
2. What does this message indicate?
3. I did manage to trash some of the songs But had another message that sounded like I should not attempt this either.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have exactly the same problem. I have tried Applejack and TechTools Pro to correct permissions and the files are still unaccessible.
The computer is a 2x3 GHz Dual-core Intel Xeon w/16GB Memory, running OS X 10.4.10.
I too would greatly appreciate a hint on how to access these files.

• Desktop files disappeared from displaying on the Desktop

My existing Desktop files disappeared from displaying on the Desktop--the files still exist, and newly added files appear on the Desktop; I did not enter any "hide my files" command. How do I have them display? Running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2

Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.desktop.plist. Move the .plists to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plists from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plists to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

Hi CcjNZek,
In case we have misunderstanding, please explain a bit about the following questions:
1. Do you mean that we lost some files when we failed in the process of transferring files by Bluetooth?
2. What do you mean about the sentence ‘usb'd to a pc’?
3. Do you use the phone to connect the Bluetooth? If so, please check if you have backed up those files.
We could check the default folder of the file transfer.
As we use the Windows 8.1, we could use the File History to restore your file in the Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, and Desktop folders and the OneDrive files available offline on your PC.

• HOW REBUILD THE DESKTOP FILE ON INTEL CORE DUO I MAC ?

On my old I mac, I could restart the computer, and while it was restarting, I held down both option key and apple key at same time until a message appeared which asked if I wanted to rebuild the desktop file. I tried this same thing on my new Intel Core Duo I mac, but nothing happened. The reason I want to rebuild the desktop file is because things are slowing down. Everything works, but there is a delay between the command, and the resulting action. Please tell me how I can speed up things again. Is there some other means to try to eliminate delays on my present Intel computer? Thanks in advance.

If you have several GB free space on the HD, the next question would be, do you turn the Mac off or put it in system sleep overnight? That can prevent the cron maintenance tasks from running (display-only sleep allow the tasks to run). Tiger is supposed to track if the maintenance tasks haven't run and launch the tasks outside of the nominal 3AM timeframe if enough time has elapsed, but the timing and real-world functionality of that test is unclear. You can leave the Mac in display-only sleep a few times a month (especially the first weekend of the month); you can manually Force Background Maintenance; or you can use a third-party utility such as OnyX to run the maintenance. Note that any system utility you use must be compatible with the OS version (e.g., use the Tiger version of OnyX with 10.4.x).

• Lost desktop

In the course of shifting files on th Desktop recently, I inadvertently dleted teh Desktop. I waas able to reset the Finder, with Desktop folder, but lost the files. Can anyone explain what happened?

If there is any chance of recovery at all your best bet is Prosoft Data Rescue 3. There is a free trial to see if it can recover what you need. But don't do another process on that drive until you've downloaded and run it.
That means that ideally you should use another bootable drive to download and run Data Rescue. Or booted from another Mac in firewire mode. Also, there is always the option of ordering or going to the store to purchase the DVD. Then running from the optical drive.

• How to get desktop files to stay on the desktop

Please help. Desktop files keep disappearing from the desktop. So far, the only way that I can return them to the desktop is by a Restart. I can find the items in a folder labeled "Desktop" in User/(Name), but I can't find how to get them to return to the desktop proper, in a way that they stay there. Am I posting this in the wrong forum? This is my third try with no responses

• Desktop File in OS 9, How Big Can It Be?

Based on my early Mac experiences with OS 7 and 8, I've always believed that it was not a good idea to have large files stored on the desktop. I was taught to always use a desktop alias for a large folder or file. That probably made some sense in OS 7 and maybe even OS 8, but does it hold true for OS 9?
I ask because I recently was cleaning up my friend's Sawtooth G4 and noticed that he had parked a 2 GB folder or photos on his desktop. I cautioned him that that may be why his screen paints so slowly on startup/restart, even after rebuilding the desktop. Since then I've been giving this more thought and I can't seem to find a real reason why he shouldn't just keep his 2 GBs of photos on his desktop.
Advice and comment please.
Thanks,
Carl B.

Hi, Carl -
The desktop file has very little to do with the Desktop, in spite of the similarity of names. Placing an item on the Desktop does not expand the desktop file.

The Desktop is actually an invisible, always open folder; every volume (in OS 9 and earlier) has its own Desktop folder.
The Desktop is considered a shared area, but it's better to imagine it as a stack of separate invisible and transparent desktop folders, all open at the same time.
Every mounted volume (disk or partition) has its own layer in that stack.
By default, when something is saved to the Desktop, or Option-copied there from a volume, it is placed on the Desktop layer belonging to the current boot volume.
If your folders are in a layer belonging to another volume, then when you drag the item from the Desktop into one of those folders it will be copied into it, not just moved - same as if you had dragged an item directly from one volume to another - with the original left behind.
• The desktop file -
There are two invisible database files, Desktop DB and Desktop DF, that Finder maintains; these are used by Finder to keep track of where files are, what program any given file type should be linked to, where those programs are, and what icon to apply to each file - in the case of files with custom icons, it often keeps a copy of those icons in those desktop files, too.
Ages ago there was just one such invisible desktop file; in more modern OS's, there are now two. But, by tradition, we refer to both the files, collectively, as the desktop file, or simply, the desktop.
Sometimes the desktop file gets out of kilter, out of sync with reality, and Finder gets confused, not being able to locate what it needs quickly enough. Often this status results in generic icons being displayed for programs and their files, and Finder can no longer link an app's documents with the app. In bad cases, it can affect the basic operation of the OS itself.
The basic maintenance to do then is to rebuild the desktop - have Finder confirm, relearn, and refresh the information in the databases. There is a built-in command mechanism to instruct Finder to do that - at startup, hold down the Command and Option keys, keep them held down until a splash screen appears asking if we really do want the desktop rebuilt - clicking "okay" is the normal response, unless we've changed our mind (or have more than one hard drive, and just want to rebuild the desktop on one of them). It takes a few minutes to complete the rebuild.

Although moving an item to the Desktop does not affect the size of desktop file, it can slow down Finder redraws of the Desktop. Whenever Finder needs to redraw any portion of the Desktop, it must research each item that is on the Desktop - this causes Finder to go to the desktop file to find out if that item needs a custom icon, and, if so, which to use.
So, additional items on the Desktop can slow down a Finder redraw simply by being there; and more so if the desktop file itself is overly bloated (Finder has to look through more stuff to find what it needs).
Rebuilding the desktop file can be part of the solution.

Other things which can slow down Finder -
• If a picture is not displayed on the Desktop, open the Appearance control panel, go to the Desktop tab - if the Remove Picture button is active, click it. Doing this cures a situation where there was once a picture displayed on the Desktop, but the picture itself was removed at one point without changing the setting in Appearance control panel. Appearance keeps looking for that non-existent picture on each redraw of the Desktop, which takes time.
• Check in the Recent Servers folder in the Apple menu, and the Servers folder in the System Folder - trash any aliases you find there. Likewise, get rid of any unneeded aliases or items in the Startup Items folder in System Folder.
• Having an alias to a hard drive in the Apple menu, though certainly convenient, slows down startup while the OS builds a hierarchical menu for it.
• If you're networked and use File Sharing, there can be a delay caused by the Mac reconnecting to shared items (drives and volumes) which it has been told to do so at startup. If the machine is not networked, disable File Sharing (control panel and related extensions).

• On Finder Freeze/Relaunch All my desktop files & icons disappear

The title sums it up.
When ever my mac decides to go into spinning wheel mode and I have to force quit/relaunch finder, when I relaunch finder every desktop file & icon disappear.
At that point I'm forced to push the shutdown button on the tower and reboot, then all is well until the next time.
And the next time could be a day or a few days or a week. No rhyme or reason why.
Please help me solve this frustrating problem.
Thanks

Cloud backup plans can slow your Mac down, and if used simultaneously with your Mac's networking, or you have an unreliable internet connection, could be the cause of your freezes. You may be better off seeing if turning off iCloud temporarily helps. This can especially be a problem with non-Apple routers whose firmware may not be up to date. Multitasking with backups can lead to corruption of your backups. Time Machine should only backup to hard drives twice the capacity of the original, otherwise it spends a lot of time trying to discover which archives to eraes to maintain room. Here are some other options:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992
Energy Saver can also create problems for backups, as it takes a moment for the Mac to recognize the connection. Use screen saver instead of Energy Saver when backing up. System Preferences lets you control both. Putting hard drives to sleep when backing up is ill advised.

• Please help me recover a lost PDF file from Adobe Reader XI

Hi,
I was filling out a VA form 5655 in Adobe, and twice today, I lost my file and I just cannot type all of this stuff again, because I had to do so much math and typing and more math. All of a sudden "bloop", it was gone. When I try to go into file, then revert, revert is not highlighted. I tried pulling up history and it said there was no history. I just don't know what else to do, and I need this for the morning. Please help? Thanks

Hi Pat,
I filled it out directly from the blank PDF online, and never got a chance
to save the whole document. I did however save it about 1/2 way through,
but yet cannot find that 1/2 of the document either. Thanks.

Hi,
Try these 3 solutions
1. Did you start vncserver services as:
service vncserver start
2.Check that port 5901 has not been blocked by a firewall:
# nc -vz localhost 5901
You should get a connection and a termination. If you get an error, fix the firewall.
3. service iptables stop
Hope This Helps
Regards,

You are not going to be able to run your old system from the backup on this old computer as the hardware is incompatible.
You need to get a new computer or a refurbished one.

• You know that whole .desktop file security scare?

It goes something like this:
1) Open a malicious email attachment or go to a website with malicious javascript or whatever...
2) A program is downloaded and executed with your permissions
3) It edits ~/.local/applications/synaptic.desktop or whatever other popular program.
4) In the new .desktop file it adds to the run command some nasty key logger, so now when you launch Synaptic (or pacman if someone were to attack Archers) it logs your keystrokes.
5) Now it has your root password and can do whatever it wants.
I just want to know: How likely is this, really??
Can a website seriously just download and run a file without me knowing? I doubt Firefox would let that happen... Or could an email attachment be executed without me being able to read it first? I'm pretty sure it can't...
I don't understand why people seem to be concerned about .desktop files...
I'm not even worried about my Windows machine on my home network. My router is set to reject as much stuff as it can and all computers have remote log-ins disabled. The only security problem I worry about is that my Fiancee's online courses actually send .doc's through the net, which I've heard is bad practice.

What I've read about it has a nasty tweak, a properly crafted .desktop file could launch a dialog asking for your/root password, at that time it wrecks havoc in the system and open the add/remove software, updates or whatever is it disguised to do and the user doesn't realize what just happened.
Of course there is always the other option of running as user and do whatever it can, if the creator is smart and lucky enough he/she will be able to put a nasty payload on the autostart list and the user can have a zombie machine without even knowing.
It doesn't need to break the system to do a lot of damage, wiping or stealing data from the user account is enough. Of course, this has a higher probability of happening if you run and/or install everything you find in untrusted places without proper review first.
The thing is that there are so many distros and so many versions of each distro, each with slightly different settings, DEs, browsers and whatnot that I guess it still isn't worth the bother unlike with platforms where everyone uses the same browser, possibly the default settings that come with a clean system install and worse, no security updates/patches.
Add to this the complete lack of good sense and the common (and somewhat accepted I guess) practice of using cracks and keygens for you know what and you start to understand how come at least some users keep getting the same problems over and over again.
These days with linux it is extremely easy to keep the system up to date with the latest security fixes, users tend to look free alternatives to payed programs and look first in the package manager to see if it is already available, this alone helps a lot, add a dose of good sense and you should be good to go.
