Lost eMac install/restore CDs

Hi. I have been asked to wipe a friend's old eMac so she can pass the machine on to someone else, but she cannot find the system restore CDs. Can we use a retail copy of Tiger (and iLife '06) instead? (I already have these.) Would anything important be missing from the original install/restore discs?
If nothing major would be missing, I would actually prefer to install from the retail Tiger DVDs, as the original eMac system had OS 9/Classic, which the new user will not need or use, and we could use the extra space on the 40 GB hard drive.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks, a brody. I am not worried about Appleworks. I am not sure what the Omni software is, I don't remember seeing this when working on my friend's machine, but I doubt the new user would miss it. I have iLife '06 I can install.
So it sounds like the only thing I'd be missing is the hardware test, and since this machine is so old and not upgradeable past Tiger, I am not sure this would be a big deal. If the machine starts to fail, it would not be worth fixing.

  • I can't boot from the Install/restore CDs & won't recognize an external HD

I purchased a used Powerbook G4 with tiger 10.4.11 installed. I have two problems Which I think may be software based.
First I want to Install OS 9.2 to use some programs I had on my old Mac. However when holding down the C key the computer still boots off the HD. The disk I am using is marked Power Mac G4 Mac OS version 10.2, however the read me file said it should work for the powerbook.
Second I purchased a USB external HD for use as a back up and to store graphic and music files. The computer will not recognize it. every other USB device I have used has worked (printer, mouse, keyboards and flash drives).
Is this some sort of security feature? If so how do I reset it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Donis, and a warm welcome to the forums!

Call AppleCare and explain your situation. They will probably ask for your serial number and charge you a nominal fee, but they will ship you a replacement disc.

  • IMac G5 Software restore CDs won't install on different iMac. Why?

I recently sold an OS X 10.4 iMac G5 Software restore CDs set. I got a message from the buyer and he says "I noticed that the discs say they are part of a hardware bundle and should not be sold separately." He says that the CDs will not install on his iMac.
Anyone know if it's possible to override this limitation? Thanks.

Nope. All install sets that come bundled with a computer are machine specific. Take them back and refund the buyer his money. Those disks should remain with the computer.

I have been trying to obtain original gray install/restore discs for a 1.42 eMac. Definitely no copies. Can anyone help. Tried every ebay supplier.

You could try Apple software sales at 1 800 MY APPLE and see if they still have original system discs for the eMac in question.
You would need to give them the model and serial No. of your eMac.
This is located behind the panel that opens the CD/DVD drive tray or on the drive's front panel when the drive door is open.
Be advised that if they have these discs , it will be a set that would have come, originally, with the eMac model.
The OS will not be up to date. I believe your model eMac came, originally, with OS X 10.4 or OS X 10.4.2 Tiger.
OS X10.4 Tiger is seven years old as of this year!
You could just spend the $129 dollars to buy OS X 10.5 Leopard retail discs.
Call the same number and ask of they have anymore OS X 10.5 discs still available.
There are no new iDevices that will sync and backup using 10.4 Tige any longer.
So, getting 10.5 maybe a better alternative for you.
Your eMac is fast enough to handle 10.5 Leopard with no, appreciable, issues.
    Good Luck!

  • Help! I lost my Install disks!

I lost my Install disks and need to reinstall my System files. Any ideas where I can find a used set?????
    Powerbook G3, Pismo   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

    Dahn:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If you are talking about the original restore disks you can call Apple Customer Service with your serial number and they will send you new ones for a fee. Or you can look on eBay for a Mac OS 9.0.2 (Mac OS ROM 3.5). If you also need the AHT Disk the PowerBook 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.2.1, 1.2.2 and 1.2.3 disks will work.
If you need Tiger, as Tom indicated, you will need a Full Retail Version which you can purchase from the Apple Store or online suppliers, or on 4 CDs from applerescue.com
    Good luck.

  • Where can I get an eMac install DVD from?

I've just been given an eMac that was destined for the skip. It came with no install DVD's and the administrator password is unknown. Whoever cleaned it out before parting company with it put in an administrators name as "apple" but didn't clear the password which is asked for in order to make changes & take over the computer. I wanted it as a spare & to play old games on that I can't bear to part with since getting my MacBook Pro intel i5 laptop (now updated with OS 10.7 Lion on it.)  I've done a bit of research to  try to find how to 'hack' into the system and change the administrator password but it seems I need the install disk to do a clean install again. As this eMac is running Mac OS 10.4 I should be able to wirelessly connect it to my established system once I gain control of it & use it as storage/back up etc.  I'd be grateful for any suggestions of either where I can get a disk from or how to change the root password.  Is there anyone out there who can help? I'm not a very techy pro though have had macs for many years so know my way around one fairly well.  Thanks

It will be difficult to find the original Install/Restore disc, and then it may have an OS lower than Tiger 10.4
Here's severtal methods to reset the password without the install disc:
    1. boot computer and hold the "apple" key and the "s" key.
    2. wait for terminal show
    3. release keys
    4. type without the quotes: "/sbin/mount -uaw"
    5. press enter
    6. type without the quotes: "rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
    7. press enter
    8. type without the quotes: "reboot"
    9. press enter
This will let you create a new admin account when you reboot your computer.
Also, without the discs, look at Mac OS X Tip - No Password, No Root, No CD? No Problem.
    http://www.macobserver.com/tip/2003/06/16.1.shtml
Here is a way to get around not knowing the admin password on Macs.
To reset your OS X password without an OS X CD you need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:
       1. Reboot
       2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
       3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
              * mount -uw /
              * rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
              * shutdown -h now
       4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you’re good to go again!

I lost my  install dvd for my Macbook pro 17" 2.53 i5. How can I get that?

You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee.
You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html  Another resource:  International Support Phone #s.

  • Seeking complete install/restore disk set

Help! I am looking for a complete install/restore disk set for my iMac PPC G5. Please advise where I might be able to get my grubby hands on a set. Would be interested in either copies or the originals (preferred).
Called the local Apple reseller and they didn't even know what I was talking about. EBay's no help either.
    Any suggestions?

Called 'em. Said they were no longer available but was willing to sell me the OS cds similar to the original ones that came with the iMac G5, i.e., 10.1.3 and 9.2.2. A "mere" $46.00 US.
Moral: Don't lose (or miss place) the disk set that came with the computer.
Thanks for the phone number and lead.

  • Where can I get replacement restore CDs?

  • I reformatted iBook G4 - now I cannot reinstall from system restore CDs

I am trying to repair my husband's iBook G4. It would not start up at all, so I mounted it as a Target Disk from my MacBook (2.2 Intel Core Duo, 10.5.6), and saved his important data to an external drive. Then I reformatted the iBook (from my MacBook) and ran Disk Utility on it. It got a clean bill of health. Then I tried to reinstall the OS from the original restore CDs (the 3 gray CDs which came with it.)
It gets as far as the gray Apple screen, then hangs and freezes (the little 'gear' stops spinning). I thought I might be able to install the OS from my MacBook via Target Disk, but whether the disk is in the iBook or the MacBook, it says that 'it cannot install this OS on this computer' - meaning the MacBook. But I don't want to install it on the MacBook! I thought I could install the OS via Firewire, but - apparently not!
Anything I'm missing here? These ARE the original iBook G4 10.3 install disks, and the disk itself seems fine - no weird noises or other indications that it's getting ready to take a dive.
I told him he really needs a newer laptop anyway, and am resigned to replacing it, but I'd like to be able to at least get it going while I look around for another laptop.
Can this iBook be saved? TIA, Alicia

Thanks so much for your quick response, Limnos.
I see what you're saying about TDM - I didn't know it couldn't see the other computer at that stage.
+You should try starting the G4 itself from the CDs so you can install. Insert the CD in the G4 and start up while holding down the C key so it boots from the CD.+
    I did that:
+Then I tried to reinstall the OS from the original restore CDs (the 3 gray CDs which came with it.)+
+It gets as far as the gray Apple screen, then hangs and freezes (the little 'gear' stops spinning).+
That is why I tried to get it going another way. The CD drive is not broken, but G4 will not install the OS when I use the original system restore CDs which came with the G4 (or Disk Warrior, for that matter.) I've tried formatting it and partitioning it with Disk Utility, using both GUID and Apple Partition Map. But it still only gets to the gray Apple screen, and the little gear stops spinning and there it freezes.
But it doesn't seem like a complete brick, as it works well enough to start up, chime, recognize the System Folder in the installation disk or Disk Warrior, and be accessed as a Target Disk, so I didn't think I should give up on it entirely before chucking it.
Anything else I should try on that front?
