Lost Email Messages in Inbox

I've recently purchased a new PowerBook to replace my older Powerbook, and recently used the Migration tool to move all my files, settings, applications etc across to the new machine.
Mail 2, upon starting for the first time does it usual conversion of stuff and correctly notes the 28174 messages. However when it say you can start using Mail, it only displays the most recent mail messages for the last seven days (273 messages). Which is not the 10198 messages I have on my old Powerbook in my Inbox (this about the last six years of mail). And I do archive mail regularly into other folders.
I've tried rebuilding the mailbox, checking permssions - the mbox file size it identical to my old machine (518Mb). I've subsequently quit Mail, removed all the folders under ~/Library/Mail, restarted my old Powerbook in firewire mode and tied doing an import through Mail 2 with exactly the same result.
I note a few other people have posted similar experiences with Mail 2. Given this is my first experience with Tiger (10.4.5), until I see this being resolved
I'll use my old Powerbook (10.3.9). Thus far not impressed at all.
PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)
PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I ended up going back and completely reinstalling the new PowerBook from scratch in case something was up and tried migrating again - same situation.
Next I removed all the files/folders under the /Users/~/Library/Mail directory (ie blank slate)
Having read similar posting from people, I then broke up my Inbox into folders by year received on the old Powerbook and then rebuild each of the mail folders. This had the Inbox down to 701 messages, with each of the folders holding between 396 to 1783 messages each. Restarted my old Powerbook
in firewire mode and then performed a Import Mailboxes. Once the import was
done, the old messages broken into various folders looked ok (ie number of messages matched), however the Inbox showed only 243 messages not the 701 messages originally there. In fact it appeared that only messages received in March were displayed and nothing else. I tried performing a Rebuild of the mailbox and all the messages (all 243) disappered. Searching
failed, as did any further Rebuilds.
So again I cleaned out the Mail directory on the new Powerbook, ejected firewire Powerbook drive and restarted the old Powerbook as normal. On
the old Powerbook, I then created another folder and moved all 701 messages in the Inbox to the newly created folder, thus the Inbox was empty. Restarted the old Powerbook in firewire mode and repeated the Import Mailbox process.
The seemed to go ok, all the messages were there, however I could not move the messages back to the Inbox from the folder. Given the previous experience with rebuilding a mailbox, I tried Rebuilding any of the folders partly to see if the same thing would re-occur - which it did, any mailbox selected and then a Rebuild performed would appear to delete all messages within the folder.
If I look at any of the folders directory using Terminal, I see the following:
-rw------- 1 evans evans 136022756 Apr 1 16:10 Incoming_Mail
-rw-r--r-- 1 evans evans 541600 Apr 1 16:10 IncomingTable_ofContents
-rw-r--r-- 1 evans evans 356 Apr 1 22:30 Info.plist
drwx------ 1784 evans evans 60656 Apr 1 23:00 Messages
The Incoming_Mail file is basically a mbox file (comparing it to 10.3's Mail),
IncomingTable_ofContents, is a concatenation of Subject (with additional formatting). Info.plist is a file containing display information for the folder itself and finally Messages is a folder containing the Mail 2 of the individual messages.
Out of curiosity I wondered if the TableofContents file was somehow being corrupted, so I removed the file and then went to look at the folder - oddly enough I could now view all the messages, whereas before after doing a Rebuild they completely vanished.
In other folders I found the Messages folder has a name of Messages-T0x4c5c70-fTrRll, removing IncomingTable_ofContents in this instance made no difference, nor did removing the Messages-T0.. folder and renaming the Incoming_Messages to mbox and trying a Rebuild again.
I've subsequently cleaned out the Mail folder on the new Powerbook and again perfomed a Import Mailboxes.
From observations there appears to definitely be a problem when importing mail from 10.3.x as well as performing a mailbox rebuild, though I've yet to
determine the cause of the failures.
So looks like its back to the old Powerbook and reliable 10.3.9.

had to shut down due to time constrictions, sorry for pushing the need for help, but I was desperate to recover vital lost messages. I tried everything suggested in the Mail help records and past discussion posts. At this point (next morning) my mail is still lost.
    any suggestions will be appreciated.

    HELP! URGENT! lost email messages!
    Posted: Jan 21, 2007 6:29 PM
I started, two days ago, receiving four of each message coming to me. I just looked at my accounts and saw two of my primary account (POP.ipa.net is the Incoming mail server), I'd never seen the second one before, so I deleted it.
Went to my (Mac Mail ver. 2.1) mail browser and all my inbox and sent and junk messages now show the same message: "The message from [email protected] concerning “Receipt for Your Payment to (account name)” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
    WHAT!!!!!!??????
I went to Apple discussions and found a problem similar from today and followed the advice there by David Gimeno:
"In the Finder, go to the ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/ account folder, and look at the contents of INBOX.mbox and Sent Messages.mbox."
did this and found nothing under either .mbox folder ...
HELP!!! IMPORTANT MESSAGES ARE IN THE BALANCE!

If you deleted a POP account, then all your mail stored in that account’s mailboxes has been wiped out, not just moved somewhere, and you were warned that this would happen by the following alert:
    Remove Account
Are you sure you want to remove the <AccountType> account "<AccountName>"?
This will permanently delete the account setup information, mailboxes, and messages from your computer. Messages stored on the mail server will not be affected.
To prevent that from happening, you should have moved your mail to custom “On My Mac” mailboxes instead of leaving it in the account’s mailboxes.
If the messages are not on the server, and you don’t have a backup, your only option in the case of Mail 2.x is to try to salvage as many deleted *.emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II, TechTool Pro, or FileSalvage (the files to be recovered would be different in the case of Mail 1.x). Of these, the only one I know for sure that can currently recover deleted *.emlx files is FileSalvage. Stop using your computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted files to be overwritten. Actually, your anxiety may very well have already caused some of those messages to be irretrievably lost.
As to why you appear to have lost messages from the account that remains in Mail as well, note that for each account, Mail creates a folder within ~/Library/Mail/ whose name starts with the account type (POP, IMAP, Mac), followed by the account username and the incoming mail server. Deleting a mail account causes the corresponding account folder to be deleted as well.
You should never, ever, set up two accounts in Mail with the same Account Type, User Name, and Incoming Mail Server. Two such accounts would share the same account folder in the filesystem, and deleting one of them would cause the (shared) account folder to be deleted as well...

  • Lost mail messages from inbox and drafts

I have lost all my previous inbox messages and drafts after resetting my account in Mail Preferences after a server problem. Is it because I may have renamed my account? I can't remember what I called my POP account before.
How do I recover my inbox messages or my old 'account' name.(Will that make them reappear?)
Have deleted messages from server so can't go back to there.
Problem started when someone sent me a huge music file which filled up everything.
It's driving I mad! Is there any help out there? Thanks. TW

i have this same problem so just adding on to plea for guidance. i tried to rename my mail application and remove it from the dock all in a lame attempt to make it harder for someone to find who i share a computer with....stupid. now i can't get my email to come back, there is no mail icon in my dock except a folder that says mail. i tried to reinstall my software this morning and it's the same thing....how do i get mail back???

  • Is there a way to delete all email messages from inbox without checking each one at a time on my iphone 4?

Whenever I want to delete messages in the inbox on my iphone 4, using v4.2.8, I have to manually check each one and then delete them the checked ones as a group. Is there a way to select all and delete them at one time? I love the phone and it is a little complaint, but I often get 50-60 work related messages which I scan then delete because the originals are on my work computer. Thanks.

Also, the iPhone is not a standalone device and obviously doesn't have a full blown mail client... it's an adjunct to your computer.  If you want to delete a lot of emails, do it on your computer.  You could also log into your webmail using a browser on your iPhone and do it from there.
You have a point, but you're just helping exposing the misery a little more:  I actually DO delete the emails in WebMail, very easily.  The problem is the sorry state of the Apple email client, that does not replicate those actions on the device, so I have to delete the messages TWICE--once on my computer, with a couple of clicks, and then on my iPhone, with a couple (hundreds) finger gestures.
As to your point that the iPhone is not a standalone device:  that's nonsense.  The iPhone does a lot of things that users thought IMPOSSIBLE just 10 years ago.  Are you saying that the addition of a simple feature like a "Delete All Messages" button is too much for a mobile device?  Then what to say about Siri, a complex-beyond-our-imagination system that incorporates voice recognition, AI, searching and other hard-to-grasp technologies, all at our fingertips?

  • Lost email messages after rebuild

This all started when I was trying to help my friend setup a rule for moving messages to and from specific people to a specific folder. Worked all well, but for some reason bunches of old messages started showing the "not downloaded from server" error. So, per Apple and this discussion boards advice I "rebuilt" all of the mailboxes. This fixed the not downloaded issue, but any messages older than one week are now missing from the inbox and sent mail folders. I tried all of the advised techniques...reran rebuild and deleted envelope index file and imported mailboxes...nothing worked. I tried looking at the .emlx files as well and there aren't any older than one week in the inbox or sentbox folders. My friend is (justifiably) freaking out. Any NEW advice? I was thinking of running DataRescue or DiskWarrior to see if I could recover and deleted or missing .emlx files.
System is a PowerMac G5 1.8ghz, Mac OS 10.4.10, Mail 2.1. Also, none of the mailboxes is even close to approaching mails MB limits. Email account is a POP account and has been setup for at least a few years.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you tried searching for the missing messages in Spotlight (not in Mail)?
If the .emlx files aren’t there, rebuilding mailboxes or re-creating the index isn’t going to make them reappear. If the messages are not on the server either and you don’t have a backup, you may want to try to salvage as many deleted .emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II or FileSalvage. Of these, the only one I know for sure that can currently recover deleted .emlx files is FileSalvage. • Re: HELP! URGENT! lost email messages! giving up ...

nothing worked. Tried rebuilding, then tried reindexing, then tried reimporting, all per on computer help files.
    All messages are gone.
No responses from Apple help discussions.
business receipts, replies, Paypal, eBay, all lost. Yes, I backed up, but it was two weeks ago -
    thanks.

    Stop.
Your first message was at 18:29.
You're giving up after barely an hour.
You haven't given the Discussions a chance to help.
Just don't touch anything in there until you hear from David or Allan.

  • Lost email messages

in preparing to erase and reinstall for another problem I'm having, I backed up my mail libraries for 2004 and 2005.....january 2006 was still on .mac (IMAP); since they were on the server, I did not back them up; when I reloaded OX X and opened Mail, the first 8 days of 2006 were gone........not on the server even after rebuilding the mailbox; this happened 2 weeks ago and I thought it was something I did........apple tech support checked all of my settings and agreed they were correct and they had no answer, except, email .mac support people; any ideas where they went or why?

  • Imap inbox only shows 1 email message until mail.app is quit/restarted

i am having a problem with mac mail that has persisted for months and nobody i talk to has an answer. this started in leopard - same account in panther mail did not do this.
basically i have one particular email account on a well supported university imap server (eg it is a standard imap account, no funny ports, nothing shady about the server). i use mac mail to access the account but when i leave it open for a few minutes suddenly all the emails in the inbox disappear, except one. oddly, the one email message that shows in the inbox seems random - sometimes it is a message from a week ago, sometimes the most recent one, sometimes one from last year.
i have tried changing the imap settings, turning on/off idle mode, etc etc to no avail. the account previously had 1500 messages in the inbox and recently i trashed all but 150. still happening. when i restart mac mail all the messages show up again. it is just unpredictable and annoying because i have several accounts so i usually leave mac mail on all accounts inbox view and then go crazy trying to find an email in that account, only to realize it is this bug again
    any ideas?
    thanks

perhaps this subject line is clearer than my previous post

  • Is there a way to delete all my email messages in my inbox at once?

Is there a way to delete all my email messages in my inbox in one move, rather than selecting one at a time, then deleting?

You CAN delete all your email.  Here's how: >> Open Inbox >> Edit  >> Check/select the top message; it will highlight the move button. >> Press and hold the move button and uncheck the message that you had checked earlier. >> Lift all your fingers off from the ipad screen and leave it alone. Wait until all your messages pile up on the right hand portion of the screen (in ipad); iphone will give you the actual number of emails it has selected for the action. Now they are just waiting for your command to be moved ALL at once. >> Choose trash to delete all of them or any other folder where u want to move them, like one piece. Remember this will replicate your action on the server so you will ACTUALLY move them or delete them on the server and not just the ipad. Once you have moved all messages to the trash you can either leave them there for the scheduled cleaning or empty it right away by doing this: go to trash folder and touch Edit. The Delete All button shows up at the bottom of the screen. Hit it! You’re done! If you do not see the effects of your actions on the server make sure you have enabled your email accounts for such actions.

  • Why can't I open emails in my inbox that arrived before today - I can open today's messages and I can open earlier emails tha are stored in other folders

Yesterday I had a message that I could not "get mail" because my inbox was full and that I should delete some files or compact. It only had about 20 messages in it but I had ignored suggestions that I compact for a while so I went to the menu and hit compact. Then I could get mail and I could open it while it was in my inbox.
This morning I got mail and I was able to look at it and I deleted quite a lot. A little later (I had restarted my computer in the meantime) I wanted to look at an email in my inbox. It appeared to open but had no content at all. Similarly when I looked at the message at the bottom of the screen it did not show there at all. The only messages in my inbox that I can look at are the two that arrived today.
I am able to open messages that are stored in other folders. But moving a message from the inbox to a folder does not make it able to be opened.
Another odd thing; in the inbox, one message that I can open shows the wrong sender - the sender of a message I had been moving to see if it could be opened if it were stored elsewhere; but the sender is correct when I open the message.
    It is all very weird.

This sounds like you do have a corrupted Inbox file.
First of all create a backup of your profile folder.

  • Email in inbox doesn't link to corresponding email message

starting yesterday, november 10, when i click on an email in my inbox sometimes it shows the correct email message and sometimes it shows a message from a long time ago. it is like the link from the inbox to the actual email is incorrect. has anyone else experienced this problem? there are emails i cannot access because it links to the wrong one.

You should rebuild your Mail index like this:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Go to ~/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file(s).
    3. Restart Mail and wait for it to import your existing messages; then check to see if that resolves your problem.
