LOst entire iTunes library with upgrading OS
Hi
I'm a bit basic. Awhile ago when hotmail upgraded and didn't work anymore,
i tried to upgrade my OS. I did something that my eMac couldn't handle and it more or less
died. It was out of action for a few months and would only show a blue screen and didn't remember
its old master password.
Finally I found the original start up disc and rebooted it but every thing was gone. Including
my iTunes library.
I'd had a couple of old macbooks also authorised to my account but they are long dead.
Now I can't figure out how to upload my old purchases, music and audio books.
And no, stupidly, although I did have them on an iPod classic, my son cracked the screen and killed it too, so I don't have my library anywhere..
Does anyone know what i can do?

For general library squiffiness following an upgrade the easiest thing is to restore your last backup, but I guess if it were that simple you wouldn't be here.
Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup! For example grab SyncToy 2.1, a free tool from MS. This can be used to copy your entire iTunes library (& other important data folders) onto another hard drive or network share. You can then use SyncToy periodically to synchronise or echo your library to the backup. A preview will show which files need to be updated giving you a chance to spot unexpected changes and during the run only the new or updated files will be copied saving lots of time. And if your media is all organised below the main iTunes folder then you should also be able to open the backup library on any system running the same version of iTunes regardless of drive letter or path.

The client asked me to copy music files from their old computer to an external hard drive so that they could be transfered to the new computer. So I connected the external hard drive to the old computer and copyed the entire "My Music" folder to it. I never deleted files from the old computer. I did however uninstall a few applications at the clients request such as Microsoft Office and Kodak EasyShare which have nothing to do with itunes. I got a call from the client a few hours later stating that their entire itunes music library is no longer there. I do not have much experince with itunes this just doesnt make any sense to me. I am sure the music is there but itunes is not pulling it up. Can someone please tell me how to fix this problem?

Can I use my Mac OS iTunes Library with Windows XP under Boot Camp?
Hello. I have a Mac Pro with two drives, a 1TB Mac OS 10.5 drive and a 500GB Windows XP drive. I have a large iTunes library on my Mac OS drive, and I'd like to be able to access it when I'm using XP. I downloaded MacDrive hoping that I'd be able to use the same iTunes library, but I'm stuck as to what to do now. Anyone know if this is possible, and how I can get it to work?
I have my entire iTunes library shared between Mac OS X 10.5.2 and XP (aka. Media Center 2005).
I use an HFS+ volume accessed via MacDrive. In my case I started off with the Windows iTunes as the master (and use it to rip all my CDs). I then set the Mac side running iTunes to use the same iTunes folder as specified in Windows (this is done in Advanced Preferences). I also replaced the Mac "iTunes Music Library.xml" and "iTunes Library" file (both stored in /Users/username/Music/iTunes) with aliases pointing to "C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml" and "C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl" respectively.
Note: I suspect the Mac side will need write access to these two files, and as I used FAT32 for the Windows volume the Mac does have write access. However there are now at least two ways for the Mac to get write access to NTFS volumes (MacFuse being one). It may also be possible to tell iTunes to store these files themselves in a common location (not tried that).
While it is not relevant to your query, I have also managed to share my entire iTunes library with Windows Media Player (and therefore also to Media Center 2005). All my music is in Apple Lossless format and I have a directshow filter for WMP to let it play Apple Lossless (or unprotected AAC). I also have a plugin installed to let WMP read the meta tags in MPEG4 (i.e. AAC and Apple Lossless) files.
When I switch from Windows to Mac and run iTunes it does a brief rebuild, when I switch from Mac to Windows it again does a brief rebuild and the result is that the list of music in iTunes on both operating systems is always the same and successfully accesses the same music files on the shared volume. I rebooted back in to Mac OS X at the weekend and was happily accessing the music in Front Row. -
Moving an entire iTunes library from PC to Mac
My Dell Inspiron is basically shot right now and I have to move my ENTIRE iTunes library (literally everything; music, music videos, podcasts, and apps for iOS devices) from it to my sister's MacBook Pro before the Dell is completely dead. My music is already on an external drive, but I think everything else (music videos, podcasts, and apps) is on the main hard drive, which I am planning to move to the external drive. I don't want to lose the data on my apps (such as game high scores and saved to-do lists). I don't want to have to restore and re-sync my iDevice as it takes a very long time. I also don't want to lose minor song information such as year, composer, genre, track number, and album artwork. Basically, I want my iTunes library on the MacBook Pro to be exactly like the one I had on the Dell.
How do I go about moving my entire iTunes library with everything intact as smoothly as possible with little or no problems from PC to Mac?It's important that you copy the xml file inside the iTunes folder on Windows (Documents / Music) along with all your files. Then you have to transfer the iTunes folder into your Mac (usually is located inside the Music folder) and start iTunes. Inside iTunes pref make sure you select the right folder for your music. Another important thing is to have the same iTunes version on Windows and Mac when doing such operations. I hope that helps, bye

PLEASE HELP!!! Somehow my entire iTunes library got deleted, and I cannot sync all my music that I put on from cd's (which I no longer have). All the purchased music has been synced, but nothing else! All my other devices are synced with iCloud and lost the material as well ... I am so frustrated, because the nano has not been working properly, and I am afraid of losing it forever, and of course the cd's I backed everything with are MIA!!!! GRRR! Please HELP!!!

We lost our entire itunes library in hurricaine sandy. we have 2 ipods and would like to get an external hard drive for our itunes.
Can we put the songs from our Ipods into the new Itunes we will download? and can it be done with out either of us loosing our songs?

I am FREAKING OUT! Somehow I have lost my entire Itunes library! Help!
I have a dell dimension 2400 desktop pc. I have the 30 gb ipod photo, older model. I don't know what the **** I did, but tonight when attempting to clean up some empty folders on my computer, my entire Itunes Library was deleted. I can't find it anywhere! I wasn't prompted or anything to confirm what was about to happen, but when I opened Itunes back up, it was completely empty. Now when I try and put back on the "Itunes" songs it can find on my computer, it is only a fraction of them. Somehow, if possible, I just want to restore my Itunes as if I hadn't touched it, back to 2 hours ago! I am lost over 4000 songs! Some of the songs were downloaded, some ripped off cd's, some off Itunes. Someone please tell me it can be fixed! My ipod still has everything on it except for abunch of unchecked songs that were still on the computer.
if you have all the songs still on your ipod you can put them back on your computer from the ipod... just DONT LET ITUNES SYNC WITH YOU IPOD when you plug it back in. change the settings to manual control for syncing ipods or your itunes will delete all of them. i dont know what to do for the unchecked songs... i had a similar situation and i used a mac program to take the songs off of my ipod. hope this helps.. just google for an application that will let ya take songs off the ipod.

Im unsure of this update. Do you recommend putting my entire itunes library on a separate hard drive while i do this update? I was told everthing in my itunes library as well as my ipod touch would be lost if i update it. Please help.

That should be possible.
From his library connect to your library via Home Sharing.
Select the name of the shared library in the source pane of your itunes, and click on the wee disclosure triangle to the left of the name of the library. Does "Films" appear beneath the name of the library?
Here's a screenshot of what I mean.
Select "Films". In the right-hand pane you should see the item you want to transfer. Just select that item, and click "Import".
Use the same basic technique to get one or a few songs from your library transferred to his library. (The only difference is that you would have "Music" selected instead of "Films".
If you don't want him to have access to other items in your library, you could just switch Home Sharing off on his library after you've done the transfers. -
when my hard drive died I lost my itunes library and now I'm being told that I can't synch my ipod with new songs unless I delete all existing because I can only have one library at a time
Copy all the content on your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes. Then go ahead and sync the iPod with your new library.

Your iPhoto library is usually kept in your pictures folder. Did you look there? If it is still there then you did lose your photos. Just need to get the iPhoto app at the latest level.

Why isn't entire iTunes library showing up with iTunes Match activated?

I'm just getting started with Apple TV 3rd generation (running iTunes 11.1.2 on a 2-year old MacBook Pro running OS 10.8.5), and I'm very, very frustrated with how difficult it is to get my enitre iTunes library to show up on Apple TV. I thought it was possible to sync my library to the device, and wasted a lot of time trying to figure out how to do it before coming to the realization that this feature seems only to have been available in earlier generations of Apple TV. So last night I subscribed to iTunes Match and *finally* had access to my entire music library through Apple TV. But this afternoon when I turned on Apple TV, lo and behold it was back to displaying only my purchased music. I only briefly saw the "Turn on iTunes Match" message, and it was indeed turned on, but now I'm not even seeing that prompt. Can anyone tell me what the heck is going on, and how I can get Apple TV to display my entire iTunes library EVERY time I turn it on? Thanks much!This may or may not work. But have you tried setting your home country as the US? Another possibility - go to Settings --> General --> Parental Controls - make sure Netflix is set to show.

For your own music that you've copied, then if you haven't got a backup on, for example, external drives or CDs/DVDs then you could see if any of the utilities mentioned in this old post still exist and work -
