Lost ethernet on Quicksilver

Tonight I was suddenly unable to use ethernet. Ethernet was not showing in System Prefs, just Airport (no card fitted).
Changed cable, same result. Tried Powerbook on ethernet and that OK so not a cable or router problem.
Tried manually entering addresses. Got warning "that router not in computer subnet". Continued and ethernet appeared in System Prefs but said no cable connected, which there was.
Network Diagnostics can't help.
Looks like a trip to a workshop for the G4 to me unless anyone has any ideas as to any other cause that might be worth investigating.
Thanks.
Michael

It now seems this was due to damage caused by a nearby lightning strike. I later found a hi-fi amplifier with lights on which shouldn't have been on which made me wonder if this was the cause as there had been a short storm at lunchtime. Conversation with a neighbour this morning seems to confirm this as his TV blew up while he was in the room and his phones were on the blink.
As the G4 seems to work normally otherwise and Airport is showing in System Prefs I'll get an Airport card and use that for internet access.

  • Lost ethernet connectivity

    Fisrt of all, thanks everybody.
I'have been facing a problem of lost of connectivit at ethernet interface.
I'm using 2 Aironet 1310 as bridge between 2 buildings. The wireless configuration is OK.
It is an intermmitent problem. Sometimes all computers at the remote building lost the connectivit with the main building (DHCP, Internet) and we can't ping the remote Radio. Neither of the remote building where it are fixed.
But at the main building when I open the Radio web page, the event log show me that the radio interface is up and associated with other radio.
I'don know if is a hardware problem, when I do "sh interfaces" it's seens that all is ok.
    Anyone could help me.
    Thanks Carlos

    Carlos,
FYI, the connections where the coax is attached to the radio can give you a lot of problems if it is not sealed perfectly. The radio installation kit comes with sealant tape, I assume your coax was sealed. If not, you may have some water in the connection or in the coax end. I have had to replace both coax and radio once that happens; however, my environment was worse than most. You may end up having to replace the radio. That is what I had to do more than once when this starts happening.

  • Lost EtherNet  & printer

    Problem:
    a) EtherNet is stuck with a self-assigned IP address.
I've restarted everything in my setup (see below) - no joy. I hesitate to mark it as a hardware problem, because I managed to get the HP printer working once. The G3 also shows up on my hub with the control LED steady on.
    b) cannot setup HP 1200 printer on EtherNet in Printer Setup Utility
My Epson R800 on FireWire is OK, but when I want to add the HP it appears for a split second in the "add" list, then it's gone. It had worked before, and I managed to add it once after it got lost, but it's gone again…

  • Wi-Fi connectivity lost, ethernet through time capsule works fine. Wi-Fi adapter broken??

Weird... I have been using my iMac through Time Capsule.... Wi-Fi set-up works fine for iPod, iPad and Windows PC. Last week I lost my connectivity on iMac temporarily... it re-connected automatically several times, but after yesterday the connection didn't come back. Hooked up my Airport Express for speakers so now I'm connected through Airport Express and Ethernet connector on iMac. What can be wrong here??? Any help is appreciated, and hey, no, the iMac is within Wi-Fi distance!
    Thans a lot..
    Peter

Try downgrading your TimeCapsule to 7.5.2 (it proved to solve almost all the problems with Time Capsule). You can check how to do it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1218

  • 'Lost' Ethernet

My Wife's hemisphere iMac running 10.5.2 is recently showing a strange phenomenon - on restart (not on wake) the (wired) Ethernet connection is 'lost' - that is it is shown as not connecting (to a shared Speedtouch DSL modem that works fine). But if one opens System Preferences/Network, although the built-in Ethernet is shown as inactive the system 'discovers' a new Ethernet, named Ethernet 1, 2 etc. that works fine. But this one will die, too, on restart to be replaced by another newly discovered one.
Deleting all these (including 'built-in') just resets the counter - the phenomenon remains!
Apart from this all seems well but I cannot get rid of this effect - obviously tried repairing prefs and so on.
The machine seems to have nothing new on it.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    WS

For anyone who needs to know I seem to have solved this, and in a much simpler way than by doing a Leopard archive install (which did not work - presumably a clean install would have but this is truly thermonuclear!).
Reasoning that something in system prefs at HD (as opposed to user) level had to be the problem and having found that trashing individual possible-looking files did not work (perhaps because the actual corrupt files are invisible?) I trashed the entire HD-level (Macintosh HD/Library) level folders for Preferences and Cache, then rebooted. This has worked, so TM and Ethernet are now working normally, and Software Upgrade also works normally.
In practice this is much less 'nuclear' than a system re-install, and a lot quicker. Applications (such as MSOffice) seem not to need re-authorization (though the system still warns about them being opened 'for the first time') and things that need re-setting seem quite modest (like auto-login). Of course the users and their files survive.
    Details
    * the OSX setup wizard is triggered - and I just closed it.
    * Note that the folders can only be moved direct to trash (moving them anywhere else just copies them - a desirable backup but not effective as a solution - and trashing them needs a password.

  • Lost Ethernet Printer in 10.6

Since switching my system from 10.5 to 10.6 I have lost my ethernet printer a HP Laserjet 8000 printer. It does not appear in the printer list, have checked with HP who say it is fully compatible and have the downloaded the latest drivers.
My older 10.5 system still sees and prints fine to it.
    Any ideas?

Bonjour is not Appletalk. It is the replacement protocol that allows network devices to find one another, but it requires all devices support it, and many printers, particularly older ones, do not.
If this printer had supported it, the system would have found it automatically.

System slowed then froze.  After reboot  able to reset "normal defualts", and all OK except noticing the lack of said driver. Do you think one caused the other? Will I have to reload the whole mobo driver set? And why is the driver version on the mobo CD later than the ones available at the MSI and Intel websites,if I'm not mistaken?  And one more thing - how can I get my setup listed out all nice at the bottom of this screen?  Thanks.

    In  the BIOS make sure

  • I am having trouble with my Mac Mini's ethernet connection.   Defining a new network interface shows no ethernet adaptor.  Reloading SL from DVD repaired.  But SL update lost ethernet again.  Will Lion Fix?

I am having trouble with my mac mini ethernet.  It had been working for weeks after an update to SL 10.6.8.
Once it went out and i repaired it by defining a new connection from System Preferences ->Network->(left panel service, +).
But yesterday, after a power up.  my ethernet was not working again. I tried this old trick to repair it, but the interface choices
listed for '+' a new service did not include Ethernet any more.  And the Utilities->System Profiler->Ethernet Cards shows
    no ethernet available.
As a last ditch effort i reloaded my original SL from DVD.  (I think it was version 10.6.4 but i could be mistaken on the version).
The ethernet worked!  But KeyNote wasn't going to work because apparently the version i purchased depends on 10.6.8.
So I upgraded again to SL 10.6.8 (Plus some other updates like AirPort which i don't use).
Now the Ethernet is not working again.  I see the same symptoms as before with the Ethernet seeming not installed.
Is this a problem seen by others?
Would going to Lion fix the problem?
Could AirPort actually be the culprit and not SL?
If i stay with my original SL, would i need to repurchase a version of KeyNote for the older version of SL?

    Have you reset the SMC?
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
While you're at it, resetting the PRAM won't hurt anything and 'might' help is SMC reset didn't work (PRAM does some port control):
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Something else you might try .... you don't say how you're updating to 10.6.8, however, if you're using Software Update, you might try downloading the 10.6.8 combo update, which contains all updates to 10.6. Sometimes, Software Update doesn't work quite right, and installing the combo update fixes that. Download the update from Apple's download site at http://support.apple.com/downloads/ , using Disk Utility repair permissions, apply the combo update, then repair permissions again.

  • Lost ethernet connection switching locations

When I change the location of my MBA, even if I had turned the computer off between locations, I often lose my ethernet connection. The button in Network Preferences turns red with text "Not connected." The usual way to get the connection back is to restart the computer, but unplugging and then reconnecting my adaptor has also worked. I don't always lose the connection right away, but eventually I no longer have it.
This never happened with my previous MBP and Snow Leopard, but since my MBA came loaded with Lion, I can't be 100% sure the problem is Lion rather than Snow Leopard.
    I am using Lion 10.7.1,

    Try resetting the SMC.

  • Have Lost Ethernet Connection on MacMini (MC270LL/A)

Recently while checking the speed of my cable modem (I do this by moving the ethernet cable directly to my MacMini rather than to the Airport Extreme. Then I reboot both the DOCSIS Modem as well as the computer.) But back to the point. Recently while attempting to check the speed of the cable modem I got a message from Network Prefs that said "Ethernet NOT CONNECTED," "Cable Unplugged." I've zapped the PRAM, checked the ethernet cable, which is obviously working since I have no problem getting a good signal from the Airport Extreme..
In fact, when I connect the ethernet cable from a Motorola DOCSIS cable modem directly to the Airport Extreme I get a fine signal for all my equipment. Using Apple's Airport Extreme, SpeedTest usually shows around 23000 to 27000kbps Downstream, and a little over 2000kbps Upstream. This is with an iPad, a WiFi Blueray, one of the two Apple TVs, a laptop, 2 iPhones, and most importantly the MacMini itself, all running at the same time. I get 33000kbps with only the MacMini and the iPad. So my speed is good. Not the 50000kbps advertised, but I certainly can't complain.
The only logical explanation I can think of is that I either have a bad ethernet card, or that the ethernet plug itself is damaged inside where the damage can't be seen.
So, am I looking for a new Ethernet Card, or can a damaged connection be repaired at an Apple Store? Or do I just have to live with this situation until either the Airport Extreme or the WiFi Card in the MacMini die too? It seems likely to me that my MacMini from mid 2000 (MC270LL/A) has a bad ethernet card. But I would LOVE to hear that this could be a software problem that could be fixed. Or even that the MacMini could be repaired for a reasonable price.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Lost ethernet connection

I was in the middle of a web browsing session (using wireless at a Free WiFi hotspot) when I noticed the loss of internet connection. But when I rebooted using ethernet cable hooked up directly to the DSL modem I could not get my McBook to communicate to the modem. I also could not get on the internet as a result!
When I looked at the ethernet connection it said something like "self assigned IP...unable to connect..."
I had never had this problem before and my online search for the answer has not been successful. Does any one have any idea? This has been rather frustrating. I'd appreciate any suggestion.

Yes. I was able to have internet connection using wireless but the ethernet connection was not possible in Mac OS (again, I can't even ping my DSL modem using the built-in ethernet). However, I have no problem with ethernet connection to the modem AND the internet in Windows OS (via Boot Camp). But the problem re-occurred when I used Parallel. In other words, my ethernet connect is shot under Mac OS.
I had Airport turned off when I tried using the ethernet (in Mac OS).
I also tried the power-down-wait-2-minute routine too. But nothing seemed to help.
Is there any file (possibly hidden somewhere) that I could delete the reinstall, instead of re-installing the entire OS (Mac) all over again?
Whatever the problem is I believe Panera Bread caused it. I still wish to know what Panera Bread could have done to my Mac. One thing for sure I would never spend my money there again!

    Hello @mbp2112 ,
To get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial product. You can do this at Commercial Forums.
Even though this is a Commercial product, here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system at the time of purchase or that need updating including the Ethernet drivers for your system and Windows 7.
You could also use the HP Drivers and download pages.
    Thanks.

  • Apple TV has lost ethernet but wi-fi is OK

    My set up:
Apple TV (1st gen) connected by ethernet to Airport Extreme (recent purchase) connected by ethernet to iMac (using Mountain Lion).
The set up liked a dream until recently when Apple TV dissappeared from iTunes devices list.  I turned on wi-fi and it reappeared.
One might say "so what, it works" but I have optical cable broadband and by using wi-fi to connect to Airport Extreme it kills the speed of the broadband to my iMac.  (Yes, the iMac was successfully connected to Airport Extreme [thus broadband] via ethernet (when wi-fi is off).
Any ideas so that I can return to connecting iMac to Apple TV over ethernet?
    Many thanks

    HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY
Alright... so after al@teach's lovely and kind attempt to help, I got stuck at Step 4 in the video because I guess with the newer updates Apple has disabled the option to "Configure TCP/IP"... Maybe to make our lives a bit more simpler?
I went to my father's house over the weekend and took the Apple TV with me. All was fine and it connected. Today I am back home and I started thinking... it HAS to be a problem with my Wi-Fi...
So I went back to the basic troubleshooting steps Frank Caggiano linked me and I called my Internet company once again, this time a bit more informed. I asked if they could check if there was maybe a limit of connected devices and one thing led to another and it turns out the router was misconfigured. The man made me change the Wi-Fi's name and password and when I went to connect my Apple TV, it worked!
Thanks again, al@teach & Frank Caggiano for the help!! But again, I live in the third world... the guy from the Internet company didn't even understand me when I said 'Apple TV'.
To those having the same problem, I'd say double check with your router!! Xx
