Lost Everything, Chance of Recovery?
Earlier this evening I tried to re-install OS 10.5 on my iMac G5 (I was running OS 10.4 for a while). To do this, I connected my dad's intel-based iMac to mine via Firewire and tried to do the installation through his computer. My brother told me to do this and I'm still not sure exactly why, perhaps because the old iMac can't read dual-layered DVD's, or perhaps for another reason entirely. My brother told me to do a clean-install so that things would run more smoothly, and somehow I re-partitioned my dad's computer instead of mine and now everything is gone - even his system. He had hundreds of extremely important files on his computer. Is there anything that can be done? Any recovery programs that I can download or buy? Or anything else anyone can think of? I am very desperate and seriously don't mind paying X$ for something that will work.

I don't think either of the data recovery programs mentioned actually do anything to the original disk. They do require you have a second drive with sufficient space to which to recover the files off the first drive. In that regard I believe they are safe to use should you decide later that you need another service. Unless you are going for a top dollar service (very expensive) I suspect that many small recovery services just use these programs anyway.

My computer crashed and I lost everything. It was the only computer with Sync on it and I cannot get my recovery key: how can I get all my bookmarks from that Sync account? I have a ton of bookmarks/saved password and the only way to get on sync is create a new recovery key and lose all of my information.
Is there any way to get my stuff back without creating a new recovery key and losing all my old stuff?It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.

So sorry to hear she has lost all her contacts like that. Sounds like you are saying the device completed a factory reset on it's own. Is that right? I tried to backup my iphone to itunes and then got a message "Itunes has detetected an Iphone in recovery mode. you must restore tghis Iphone before it can be used with Itunes." Does this mean I've lost everything on my Iphone & have to restore to it's original settings?
Is the device actually in recovery mode? What is showing on the display?
If it's the "Connect to iTunes" screen, then the information is already lost.
If you've forced the device in DFU mode... reboot it and simply sync with the computer. -
HELP! The hard drive on my Macbook died and i lost everything.
A week ago my MacBook died apple were going to see if any data was still on the hard drive, they called today and said that i lost everything. Three years of work gone. I cant believe it.
Just before the Mac died i had put all my music on Apple TV, does anyone know if you can pull all the songs and data back from apple tv.

A fresh hard drive, im totally gutted :-((If this was a warranty repair then you are out of luck. Under the terms of the warranty if they replaced your defective drive with a new one then the old one becomes their property. If you want it back you will have to pay them or attempt to work out some other arrangement with the but they are not going to just let you borrow it without some security. I would not take that chance either and if it was your business you would not either. Apple has to have the drive to send back to the vendor for credit. How do they know that you will return it?
There are no "cheap recovery services" If you send it off be prepared to spend a lot of money. Drive Savers and the others can do it, but it isn't cheap. I have never checked but have heard that the prices run in to the many thousands of dollars even for small drives.
I guess it depends on how valuable the data is to you. -

Hi,
I plugged my iPhone for the first time to my computer. The iTunes screen automatically came up and asked if I wanted to register/set-up my iPhone as new phone or using the backup from my iPod. Without knowing what was going to happen, I clicked on the backup from my iPod and then I lost everything I already had in my phone: mostly contacts and pictures. Although afraid of the answer, is there a solution to retrieving the info, especially the pictures?

I was on my IPhone today and it randomly froze up. The in requested a factory reset. I back up my phone all the time but now that I go to ITUNES its indicating my phone can not be located and I have lost everything! What can I do to retreive this information back. Mainly my contacts (very important information in there).
PLEASE HELP!If the information wasn't backed up (as it should have been) then there's no way to recover it. When a phone is in recovery mode like yours is, all data are gone.

From what I understand about your issues is that your iPad will currently not turn on. In attempt to resolve this issue please follow the steps in order below:
Resolution
If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), reset your device.
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more about restoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.

My daughter was trying to update her itouch and somehow lost everything on it, but itunes seems to have restored it back to what was on an older ipod she used to have. I don't think we ever registered her itouch, and I know she didn't back it up to the computer. Any chance of getting her stuff back? She lost hundreds of pictures.
- You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
- On the computer go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and see if there is a backup of her iPod.
Note that the backup does not included synced media like apps and music.
- Is she update the iPod via iTunes on other then the computer she syncs with the media on the iPod gets erased. Same for if on the syncing computer if the media was not in the iTunes library. -

To try to make your iPod work see the following. It may end up erasing the iPod:
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

A friend gave us her used iphone. We used it to take home videos and photos, and now that we synced it to our PC it has lost everything on it, and it has been replaced with the contents of our already existing iPod. In other words, all our music, photos and apps that were on our existing itunes account (used with our IPOD) etc, have been put into this used iPhone. Is there any way to get back all that stuff (mainly just want our home videos and photos back!!) Where on earth are they? Are they stored somewhere on my PC? I feel so dumb for syncing it now, and very sad for having lost my precious videos of my kids.

If you open the recovery drive (partition) it should only have a single folder (Recovery).
To make sure that your not saving restore points to that drive.
See:
Start, Control Panel, System, System Protection tab. Make sure the D drive partition is set to OFF so that it does not save there.

OMG, I lost everything ... I did a restore. I have no time machine, no back up. I had a PC, started using husband's MAC. I tried data recovery software. I'm pretty sure this made it worse. Everything is gone. Am I right? Is it gone, or is there any possible way to get this machine back to what it was? ps please keep in mind, I am brand new to anything mac, apple, etc. Anxiously awaiting and fearing replies! Thanks! (ps with the recovery software, it looks as if it's almost retrieving but there is something protecting retrieval of emails, and other docs with a ".dylib" file or something. Also, once I did recover, I saved as disk image and now that image says I don't have permissions and it can't be mounted. ... need some serious HELP!
