I assume that you don't have Time Machine running.
Look here. (Sorry deprecated) I have used DiskWarrior.

  • Lost Documents folder

While transferring the data from an older MacBook to a new MacBook Air using the backup on a Time Machine, I lost my "Documents" folder from the dock.  I then tried to click and move the "Documents" folder from the "Favorites" on the left side of the "Macintosh HD.  Now the "Documents" folder isn't visable in either place, and I can't find it.  I looked at an earlier discussion about a similar situation and tried some of the suggested things, but nothing seemed to work.  I think the documents might have ended up in the "Downloads" folder, but I'm not sure.  Any help would be appreciated.

Choose Home from the Finder's Go menu and drag it back from there. If it's in the Downloads folder, move it to the home folder first.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Lion uses Recovery to reinstall OS X. Press Command and R keys when your Mac starts, open Disk Utility, erase the drive and reinstall Lion. The other Mac has probably got its hard disk damaged, so take the Mac to an Apple Store

    Hi,
Long story...but i managed to drag the document icon off the dock and it disappeared. (Sorry VERY new to MAC...didnt know what I was doing) Then i found a post on here to get it back by going into my HD and dragging the document folder back into my dock. Then poof it disappears and i cannot find the folder anywhere. It is no longer in the HD or in the dock. Are all my documents lost now forever? Or can i retrieve them? Can anyone help?
    Thank you very much

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try going to Spotlight and type in Documents and see if it locates it. If not, download and run Disk Inventory. It will scan your entire HDD and list the contents in order of size. If you find the Document Folder, select it and check the location. Then go there and drag it to Macintosh HD > Users > +your home folder name+. Once it is in place it should show up again. You can then click it and drag it to the sidebar if you want it there.

  • Lost Document folder from dock

Hello,  How do I get my Documents folder back into the dock?  I initially tried to drag it to a new location on the dock, but it then disappeared.  It is in Finder; tried some variouis maneuvers to drag it to the doc, but it doesn't stay there.  Thank you.  Jane S

    Hi Jane
You have to move the folder next to the trash - there is a small gray line - there you can move folders - applications can be added to the left of the gray line.

  • Lost Document folder while moving one file? Need help!

While attempting to move one file from my documents folder into Planbook the whole documents folder disappeared from the row icons on the bottom of the screen! Have had my MacBook Pro for a week and still find it confusing....not sure where document folder went but I need it! Hope someone can help!

Open Finder, New Finder Window from the menu options, and look in your Home folder. Or under Macintosh HD/User folder.
I take it from your description it is no longer in the Dock (row of icons at bottom of screen) where it usually is on the right hand side of that row.

  • Udated my itunes and lost everything!

After the latest Itunes update, my Itunes was reset and I lost everything, music, videos, it's like a brand new account. Any idea how I can restore everything? (Not just the stuff I got from the Store, but my photos, videos etc?) I'm pretty desperate!! Thanks! =)

All your iTunes data should be in your PC folder " My Documents\My Music\iTunes"
then under "iTunes Media" or "iTunes Music" folder
It is only that the latest iTunes doesn't know that the old iTunes put them at "iTunes Music" folder.
This support link tell you how to go about telling iTunes where you put them.

  • All Documents folder

What is this for?I'm trying to clean out my Macbook and my All Documents folder seems to have a backup of everything on it....all my photos, videos, iTunes library, garageband projects, loop downloads.....7,663 things....can I delete the lot and why are they there?

It's a search result page, not a folder, and takes up very little space itself. Don't delete its content.

  • Move Documents folder to an other partition or drive.

    Hello,
I want to move some user folders, like Documents, images, music, video and downloads folders, to an other partition or drive. I am using Mac OS X 10.5.2. I would like to move only those folders and not all the Home user folder.
I would appreciate a lot all the help you could give me. Thank you for your time,
    Marcelo.

If you move all those folders there won't be much left in your home folder so it might be easier to move the entire home directory. But if you insist you can do this by creating symbolic links.
here are the steps for moving the Documents folder. the rest are handled similarly. (I would advise you to first try them on a test user account).
    1. Run the following commands in terminal
    *cp -Rp ~/Documents /Volumes/"diskname"*
Put the name of the disk you are moving it to instead of diskname in the above
    2. make sure that everything copied correctly and run
    *chmod -R -N ~/Documents*
    3. next, delete the original documents folder:
    *rm -rf ~/Documents*
    4. And finally, create a symbolic link.
    *ln -s /Volumes/"diskname"/Documents ~/Documents*
again, put the name of the disk you moved Documents to in the above.
    I believe, that covers it.

P.S. i believe you'll loose the special system icons on the Documents folder when you do this so you might want to copy that icon and paste it onto the folder /Volumes/"diskname"/Documents before deleting the original Documents folder.

  • Im new to the iCloud and Mac in general. After experincing a hard drive crash out of the blue, I lost everything. I want to make sure this doesn't happen again. I show backups for my iPhone and my daughter's iPod but my mac doesn't exist. How do I fix tho

I'm new to the iCloud and Mac in general. After experiencing a hard drive that went out of the blue, I lost everything. I wanted to use the icloud to back my documents up. I went into the iCloud under settings but it only shows my iPhone and daughter's iPod. How do I get my Mac to back up too? Is there something I need to use to have the documents back up?

You cannot back up your Mac to iCloud. Even backing the whole thing up to another online service would be dubious because it would take a very long time. You should buy an external hard disk and back up to that - even better, buy two and use one to make a Time Machine backup and the other to clone your Mac from time to time, thus giving you a backup from which you can boot in an emergency.
If you wanted to back up a suitably sized selection of data to an online service there are a number of third-party methods available, some of which are examined here:

  • How do I change the default save location for new files in Pages back from iCloud to my Documents folder?

I just upgraded OSX to Mountain Lion and Pages to 4.2, and because OSX is syncing with my iCloud account, when I go to save a new file in Pages it defaults to try to save to my iCloud account rather than giving me the folder structure on my hard-drive that I prefer. It requires two extra steps to save to the proper place in my Documents folder on my hard drive.
Is there a way to reset the default so that when I go to save a new file, the folder structure opens to the last saved folder (like it does in other non-iCloud applications) rather than defaulting to my iCloud, and to do it without just removing documents from my iCloud account entirely?
I checked the Preferences for both Pages and iCloud and found nothing about this.

What I meant is turn off Documents and Data in iCloud in OS X. Keep it on on your iOS devices. iCloud will sync documents between the iOS devices and make them available on the iCloud web site, but it won't mess up iWorks' open and save dialog boxes. It also won't assume that you want all your documents in iCloud, which I think is undesirable anyway.
Keep iOS and OS X separate, and use the web site to move files between the two as necessary.
iOS iWork is different from OS X iWork. There are fewer fonts on an iOS device. iOS iWork programs have slightly different feature sets than OS X iWork programs, and the file formats are different. iCloud automatically converts the file format when necessary, but if you make a habit of saving things directly to iCloud, you are limited to the lowest common denominator between the two versions of iWorks. So why would anyone want iWork on the Mac to open and save documents on iCloud by default?
If you want to store files in the cloud and sync them on your Macs, SugarSync is a much better solution. It lets you choose your sync folders, it doesn't make you reorganize your files, it lets you sync all file types, it doesn't convert files to a different format and back, and it stores everything in the cloud, too. Just the simle act of saving a file backs it up and syncs it. I wouldn't live without it. iCloud is best with iTunes purchases and synchronizing Mac settings and iOS files; I woudln't live without it. The two make an unbeatable combination.

  • User cannot access redirected Documents folder, but can connect to share in Windows Explorer and access folder on server

I am in the final stages of a cross-forest migration.  Users have Windows 7 workstations with redirected folders on a Windows Server 2012 box running in the old forest.  User accounts were not migrated.  The accounts in use have always
been in the "new" forest.  One of our challenges was the large volume of data in redirected folders.  I made sure users in the target forest had continued to have access to their redirected folders in the old forest and robocopied
the entire users share, copying the permissions with the files.  By doing incremental robocopies, we can get a final copy done now in about six hours.  The plan was simple: copy the files, do an incremental copy every night, on the night of the cutover
change the folder redirection policy Documents path from
    \\oldserver\users\%USERNAME% to
\\newserver\users\%USERNAME%. The policy is configured to NOT copy user files from the existing folder to the new redirected folder.  Everything was going well until I tested the policy change.  After the folder redirection policy is updated
and applied, the user cannot access the private Documents folder.  For example, user Chester Tester logs on as ctester.  I open Windows Explorer and click the Documents shortcut.  I see one subfolder, which is subfolder of Public Documents.
So I can look at Public Documents but when I click on the Documents folder (Under the Documents library link) I get an access denied error.  Now for the kicker, if I open another Windows Explorer window and edit the address bar to
\\newserver\users\ctester, I can navigate the Documents folder tree and see my thousands of documents. What the ....?
I'm hoping this is something really simple to fix!
    TIA

    HI Vivian,
Thank you for your reply.  Yes, the path in Group Policy Folder Redirection Root Path was updated to
\\NEWSERVER\users.  I had planned to point this to the distributed file system, so the first used was actually
\\domain\dfs\users.  To simplify things I have backed off to copying to just a normal share
    \\newserver\users.
We are using BASIC folder redirection and we create a folder for each user under the root path.
We did not want the policy to move content, as we were seeing users requiring 15-20 minute logon times  (or higher) after the policy is changed.
Grant the User exclusive right to Documents - Disabled
Move the contents of Documents to the new location - Disabled
    Related folder settings
    Video - Follow Documents
    Music - Follow Documents
    Pictures - Follow Documents
Now when I change the folder redirection from old server to new server I now have TWO My Documents folders in the user's redirection folder on the server.  The redirected Documents points to an empty folder set.  The copied folders with all user
data are there, but folder redirection refuses to recognize the original folder.
I am looking at the full view of the folder, nothing hidden, so I'm wondering how a folder can have two subfolders with the exact same name.  For now, I just want the redirection to move from the old server to the new server properly.  I deleted
the new My Documents folder, rebooted the user's workstation and tried again.  The behavior repeats itself, i.e., a new My Documents folder is always created when the redirection policy is changed from the old server to the new server.  The environment
has about 1500 users with approximately 1.3TB of data in the redirected Documents folders.  OUCH!

  • I might have messed up my files and now have the big exclamation mark on a lot (but not all of my iphotos) My document folder was full of photos and I tried to organize it by putting it into a separate folder but now I can't see my photos :-( please help?

Hi there, I have the same problem as I've read on some of the questions posted although the answers hasn't been much help to me with regards to the big exclamation mark on iphotos when I try to open my photos.  For some reason my photo files was stored in my document folder and you can imagine how that must have looked, very unorganized.  When I tried to move the photos from there to another file that is just for my photos.  Now I can't open them in iphotos and although I tried to undo my mistake it still doesn't want to work.. is there any way I can find all the images on my computer and fix my problem by storing them somewhere else without damaging the files?
Please help me find all my photos as I would be shattered if I were to loose any...
    Thank you.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
    Regards
    TD
