LOST FILES AFTER RESTORING COMPUTER

I RESTORED MY COMPUTER TO AN EARLIER DATE (1WK EARLIER) EVERYTHING WENT FINE. WHEN IT FINISHED I WENT INTO SOME OF MY FILE AND NOTICE ALL MY PICS AND VIDEOS WERE GONE. THE FILE NAME WERE STILL THERE  BUT FILE WERE EMPTY. I TRIED DOWNLOADING SO OF MY PICTURES BUT IT TELLS ME THAT THE PICTURE IS ALREADY  IS IN THE COMPUTER AND DO I WANT TO REPLACE IT. ARE THESE FILES SOMEWHERE IN THE COMPUTER>  ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED

Hi,
It may be that your files have accidentally been hidden.  To check this, try the following.
A useful utility for viewing all the files on your PC is called Free Commander, on the link below, as it displays folders that the Operating System normally hides and has a good search function.
http://www.snapfiles.com/php/download.php?id=107872&a=7122339&tag=601108&loc=10
This is a zipped file.  If you don't have an extraction utility installed, download and install 7-Zip which can be used to open this so that you can run the installer.  With 7-Zip installed, right click the Free Commander file, select 7-Zip, select Extract Files and click OK.  Now open this newly extracted folder and run the installer.
Once installed, launch Free Commander and use this utility to browse to the location of your missing files - can you now see the files?  If you can, right click the first file and select Properties.  Remove the tick from the box next to 'Hidden' and click Apply to save the change.  Repeat this for each of your missing files.  When done. close Free Commander and hopefully your files will now be visible when viewed in Windows.
Regards,
DP-K

  • Restoring ithmb photo thumbnail files after restoring ipod

I have lots of photos on my ipod that i copied from my computer when i was back at home, i'm miles away from home and won't be back until another year.
I DID NOT include the full resolution photos when i copied the photos so I just have thumbnails which are stored in 10 .ithmb files.
I need to restore my ipod as i have video issues so have copied all my music and videos to a PC.
The folder 'photos' which contains a file called 'Photo Database' and the sub dir called 'Thumbs' which contains the 10 .ithmb files, if i copy these to back to the ipod after restoring will my thumbnails be restored ok and work as normal?

They should be, however i cannot garuntee it..sorry. You could google a program that will copy the photos off your Ipod. You could then copy the pics off your Ipod and onto your computer. Then restore your ipod and then reimport the pics back onto your computer. If you just copy and paste all the files on the iPod, restore it, then replace the folders again with the copies you made u could end up with the same problem again. But that is depending on how you got the songs off the iPod.
    Hope this helps...

  • How to recover lost video files after restoring from back up

I recently had to restore my ipad completely one day in order to update it and I was in a rush. So I took my iPad before I could restore it from a back up. So I set up the iPad as a "new" iPad and just started using it. I bought iMovie with my iTunes account on the "new" iPad and started filming from the iPad for a school project. So I edited the footage in iMovie and had a finished project. Then I went home that night and decided to just upload my most recent back up from my old iPad. In doing so I lost ALL my footage. iMovie still has everything in the correct place and says that my project is just missing some files. Is there ANYWAY I can get this footage back? Isn't it still on the iPad somewhere? Please someone help me out!

If their on your iTunes on your computer, try plugging in your iPod and dragging the files from the iTunes Library on your computer to the library on your iPod.  Hope it helps(:

  • Syncing iPod after restoring computer

I recently had to restore my computer and when I did that, I lost all my music, except what was on my iPod. I hooked it up to my computer only to have it not show up in My Computer, but it will show up in iTunes, except when I go to try and look at it in iTunes, it disconnects. I have no idea what happened or what to do.

    Ha!
I figured it out! It happened to me too and I was really bumming and then I found this!
    http://www.metaphoriclabs.com/articles/5-ways-to-copy-music-off-your-ipod-window s-mac-os-x/
Then it didn't really work so I was bummed even more but what didn't work on mine was because the folders had to be changed from Hidden to Read-Only in the property section of the file. Follow the link's instructions until you find your Ipod_Control -> Music _*Also follow the lastish step of changing the iTunes preferences ITS VERY IMPORTANT!*_.(After following the steps) You can get there by highlighting all files you found on the iPod in the IPod_Control section, going to the very bottom of the right-click menu and selecting Properties. Then from there look for a section called Attributes, uncheck Hidden and check Read-Only.
It works fantastically for me now!
    Hope this helped!

  • Can not connect to Time Machine back up file after restore

After receiving my G5 iMac back from the Apple Store I had to restore from my Time Machine backup (they had to erase the hard drive). The backup seemed to go fine until it hit the "Network settings." It froze there for a couple of hours. Everything else seemed fine. I quit the back up and restarted my iMac and it seems to be doing fine. I did notice that some of my shareware programs need to have their keycodes re-entered and when I open up a program that has not run since being restored I get that warning window telling me that it is opening an application for the first time.
But here is the main issue...Time Machine doesn't recognize the previous back up file. I do not want erase the current file to start over...just in case something didn't get properly restored. I much rather just have Time Machine recognize the existing file...anyway of doing that? I do not have enough room on my external hard drive to have 2 backup files.
    Thanks...Lenny

I am having a similar problem - when I updated to Mavericks the install seemed to go OK until the last minute, then it literally hung for hours. I decided to re-boot the computer.  From there, it seemed like the Mavericks install was a "clean" install, and it was like setting up a brand new computer.  All of my programs were kept, but it lost all of my files from finder, as well as all my e-mails, etc.  When I tried to backup from Time Machine, none of the buttons seem to work, and I can't get it to work.  Also, before the install my 500 GB Time Machine drive was showing almost full, now it shows about 300 MB full.  I also tried to migrate the files from the Time Machine drive to the iMac, still with no luck.
Good thing I had migrated my iTunes and photos to other external drives, and I was able get those back. Losing 500 MB of photos probably would have given me a heart attack.
    Any suggestions?
    Arrrgh!

  • Can I get my contacts back from old backup files after restoring iphone?

    Hi,
I've recently upgraded to windows 7. My iphone crashed recently and I have restored it. It is now working but all my contacts, apps etc are lost, I assume because I had never synced the iphone since I got win 7.
Though I dont have my old XP computer anymore I do have got the old hard drive out of it, so I was able to go into it and copy the folder containing the backup (c:\documents and settings\USERNAME\application data\apple computer\mobile sync\backup\) so I have got the old backup but I don't know how to use it. The backup is a folder containing several .mddata and .mdinfo files.
Just putting the backup into the equivilent folder in win7 doesn't work so can anyone help me to do one of the following:
either - use the old back up to restore my iphone in windows 7
or - if the above is impossible or very complicated does anyone know how to read the old back up? I really just want the contacts which I can enter manually if necessary so I its possible to extract the contacts as text from the mddata and mdinfo files that would be great.
I'd be really grateful if anyone can help.

A 3rd party utility called MobileSyncBrowser allows for extracting this data from your iPhone's backup.
    http://mobilesyncbrowser.com/
I suggest you start syncing contacts with a supported application on your computer as is designed and intended.

  • After restoring, computer won't start up.

    Okay, here's what I've done.
I inserted the Snow Leopard (in my case USB) and started up my computer from that. Under Utilities, I hit Restore from backup, chose my backup, restored fine. After 45 minutes, it says it's done and asks me to restart the computer. When I do, I get a dark gray screen (with a power symbol in the background) that says I need to restart my computer. I restarted it and I got the same screen. It's an endless cycle! I thought it may have restored incorrectly, so I tried to restore it again; same issue. I thought maybe the backup file was corrupt, so I tried an older backup; same issue.
Any ideas? Right now my computer is inoperable unless I start it up from the Snow Leopard USB (I don't have a disk copy). Thanks guys!

What is that? Do you mean you have a copy of your Install disc on a USB drive? If so, are you sure it's a +Snow Leopard+ disc? A Leopard disc cannot restore a Snow Leopard backup properly.
I get a dark gray screen (with a power symbol in the background) that says I need to restart my computer.
That's a +*kernel panic.+* They're usually caused by hardware problems, but can also be caused by software, including using a Leopard Install disc to restore a Snow Leopard backup.
Why are you restoring? If you were having problems, such as problems with your internal HD or disk corruption problems, it's possible that parts of your installation of OSX were damaged, and Time Machine backed the corruption up, and it's now causing the kernel panics. If that's a possibility, try the restore again, but select an earlier backup, from before the problems started.
If that won't work, you can boot from the Installer, erase your internal HD, and install OSX on it. When your Mac starts up again, use +Setup Assistant+ to transfer your apps, users, data, etc. from your backups. See #19 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for detailed instructions.
Then download and install the 10.6.4 "combo" update. That's the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Snow Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

  • Itunes lost files after update

Hi. I have just updated iTunes for windows after being prompted to by a message box upon opening iTunes. (First time it has been opened in 2 weeks). After the update had been completed and I had restarted my computer I opened iTunes up to be shown the program with none of my files in. Scan for media. I clicked this and it went about scanning my computer for files. It took fifteen minutes or so. After this I went into m music library to see it was half complete. As far as I could tell all of my music was there but it had lost the information about the date added to the iTunes library, last played, number of plays and for some songs it had lost album information and artwork.
In addition to this all of my playlists have also gone.
I have not changed the files in my iTunes folder on my computer so in theory all of the information should still be there.
Does anyone know how i can get it back into iTunes again.

  • Lost playlists after restoring itunes from backup

My wife took the imac to the apple store and to diagnose the problem with the slot card reader they erased the whole computer.  I restored everything from a cloned backup of my entire HD that I made the day before using carbon copy cloner, but when I launch iTunes all of my playlists are gone.  I have tried to remove the "itunes music library.xml" and itunes Lib.itl files and reimport them by "Importing PLaylists" multiple times and it hasn't worked. Also when I do this procedure the itunes layout of the Artists/Albums/etc converts to a new format with a much smaller font and I can't seem to change it back to the way I was used to seeing my Music (with the 3 wide columns of Genres/Artists/Albums at the top with a light blue background color).  I tried recopying the entire itunes folder from the backup and that restored the itunes window to the way that I had it setup previously but the playlists are still missing.  Any advice for restoring my playlists?  Can I use Time Machine to help me?
    Thanks

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
The images are from Windows XP but you get the idea. Your Mac library file may omit the .itl extension.
See MusicFolder Files Not Added and Super Remove Dead Tracks for tools to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working I'm told Carbon Copy Cloner can do the equivalent of this Windows based backup tip

  • Lost info after restoring

I restored my phone and lost a bunch of notes, applications, contacts. Is there anyway to get these back now?

How often do you sync your iPhone with iTunes?
iTunes creates and maintains a backup for your iPhone which is updated if needed as the first step during the sync process - if any of the data on your iphone that is included with the backup has changed since the last sync, which is usually 100% of the time.
Your iPhone's backup includes data such as most iPhone settings, email account settings, contact info, SMS messages, notes, recent calls, call favorites, photos in your iPhone's camera roll, and 3rd party app settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app.
3rd party apps are not included with the backup. 3rd party apps should be in your iTunes library on your computer along with all other iTunes content - music, video, and podcasts.
Contact info and calendar events are designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer. With XP and Vista, this can be with Outlook 2003 or 2007 for contact info and calendar events, and with Windows Contacts for contact info only - the address book used by Outlook Express with XP, and the address book used by Windows Mail with Vista - the name change for Outlook Express with Vista.
When restoring your iPhone with iTunes, your iPhone is erased and the firmware is re-installed. After the firmware is re-installed, you are prompted to restore your iPhone from your iPhone's backup, which is the default selection. The other selection which must be manually selected is restoring your iPhone as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.
Did you restore your iPhone with iTunes on the computer that you normally sync your iPhone with?
