Lost/forgotten administrator password

I have just bought a new imac and given my old one to my son. He reinstalled Leopard and has got everything up and running but whenever it asks for the administrator name and password it doesn't accept anything we put in.
We have tried my old name and password from before I gave it to him and we have tried his name and password from the account he has set up - which doesn't seem to be an administrator account. He is adamant that he hasn't changed any other passwords or anything but we don't know what to do now. If we try and re-install Leopard again it asks for the administrator name and password !
Is there anything we are missing like a start up default name and password (we have tried 'admin' and 'admin' or failing that do we have to reformat the whole thing and rebuild it from scratch?
Any thoughts welcome.
Thanks
David

Now that's exceedingly weird, A computer that won't start up from the install disk. Cobbyco, after trying Monty's suggestion, putting the install dvd in, turning the computer off, waiting a few seconds, then holding down the C key and pressing the power button, are you continuing to hold down the C key or letting go right away? I usually continue to hold down the c key at least til the screen lights up, that way I'm sure the install disk is the one starting the computer up. The more knowledgeable folks who have replied may think that's unnecessary, to hold the c key down that long, but it's just my own habit. Try it, might work for you too.

  • Forgotten Administrator Password for Windows 7

I have a Gateway CPU that's running Windows 7.  I have not used this desktop system in a while and have forgotten the password. I can get to the Welcome page because the system is not connected to the internet and I cannot connect to the internet because I have no password.  Can someone please HELP????? I have rebooted several times. I have tried to write down all the passwords that I can remember. I have pressed F8 at reboot to get to the control panel, but due to the fact that I have two accounts setup--one as administrator and the other as a guest, it only takes me back to the signon to choose one or the other.  I can access the guest account, but only have limited authoriy.  However, i can click the start button and type command prompt in the search box, but what to do after this is unclear. PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEAE help me if you can with some clear and direct steps to take.   Thanks in advance for all the help I am sure to get.  klj4real

    KLJ4real, welcome to the forum.
The best way is to reinstall Win 7.  We can't help you with a lost password beyond that option.
You can, however, run Google search for a solution.

  • Resetting a forgotten Administrator Password

I'm helping a friend who has an iMAC G5 which currently runs Mac OS X 10.4.8, (Tiger), and has forgotten his administrator password. The original discs for this machine are Tiger Mac OS X 10.2.3. We've already tried using the install disc (disc 1). We put the disc in and restarted the system, holding down the C key when the tone was heard and continued to hold it until the spinning gear appeared. It seems to load the CD because we could hear it grind as the system started up and we noticed small file-folder icons appear in the center of the screen with a question mark, but eventually it seemed to load the OS from teh hard drive and started as usual, with a Finder window open browsing the CD. From everything we've read, we should have instead seen the installation program where we'd have the chance to reset the administrator password. Can anyone offer some advice? Thanks!

Hi LLApple, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Yes, you should've sen the Installer, but...
I wouldn't try changing Tiger's Passwords with a Jaguar or Panther Install Disk at all.

  • Complications resolving forgotten administrator password...

Hi. I have an imac 10.5.8 which been in storage for a year or so. Unfortunately I have forgotten the administrator password. I have spent most of the day in forums but am still unable to resolve the issue. I would like to either use terminal to set up a new administrator account, or preferably to use the startup disc to reset my password.
I am not able to reboot in single user mode. I must have set up firmware protection when i got the imac years ago. (I cant fix this without the administrator password.)
...so I can't open terminal or the start up disc from the login screen.
I have tried opening terminal from the guest account (the only account I can get into)  and using these instructions:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3506318
but terminal tells me that I do not have permission to do this.
I have tried numerous times to open the reset password application in the Utilities folder in the startup disc from within the guest account, but everytime it quits unexpectedly.
At a loss as to what to do. Would appreciate any help!
    Thanks.

Maybe your are getting the firmware password?  Do you see this image?

Remove one memory stick.  Then do as BD suggests.
    BDAqua reminds me:
Then, the PRAM must be reset 3 times. (Command + Option + p + r).

  • Forgotten administrator password for imac how do I reset?

I have forgotten the password for teh administartor account on my imac.  There are no other admin accounts set up.
How do I rest the password?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
There are different ways of resetting your user password depending on the Mac OS X version you are running. Open  > About this Mac, and tell me which OS X version you are running.
If it's 10.6 or older, see "Resetting your original administrator account password" > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274
If it's 10.7 or 10.8, reset the password using your Apple ID as stated in the link above. If it doesn't work, try to reset the password using Terminal > http://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4101

  • HT1349 Forgotten administrator password

I have forgotten my administrator password to my MAC OS X desktop, but when I insert the Installer CD and restart computer to try and reset password it will only give me the option of reseting 'root system administrator' passoword. My user name is not available in the drop down menu.
Is there anyway of reseting the password without losing all the information, data and photos stored on my computer?

Sorry for the question but what password do you mean exactly; the Windows admin password or the BIOS password.
If you mean the BIOS password then Ive bad news for you; only the ASP could remove the BIOS password.
If you are meaning the windows admin password then you will have to reinstall the OS again to get an access to the OS.
Usually you could boot from the Recovery disk and after a short time the OS would be installed and you would get the notebook with factory settings. Like at the first day of purchase

If it's running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, insert a Mac OS X install DVD, restart with the Option key held down, click on it, and use the Reset Password utility.
If it's running Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, restart with the Command and R keys held down, open the Terminal, and use the resetpassword command:

  • Lost my administration password. What can I do ?

    Hello,
I have a new IBook since Christmas. I did choose an administrative password, but it seems I typed it wrong : I cannot find it any more. I'm surprised because the hint question I left is very clear, but well, I guess it can happen. Of course, I tried all the ortograph versions I could think of and none works.
    How can I re-initiate this password ?
    Thanks in advance
    Lise

    Hi
    Thanks for your answer !
I checked on the article and selected the 'change administration password' paragraph. I followed the instructions, but it seems the CD does not launch itself automatically as it should. What should I do ? I did not have to install the OS the first time, it was already installed.
I also checked if it was an AZERTY/QWERTY keyboard problem but it's not. I also tried any variations that came into my mind with the Shift button on and off but it does not work.

  • LOST LDAP Administrator Password

So what do you do when you loose or forget your LDAP Administrator password....don't ask how...

    *enter King Kong*
    <pre class=command>mkpassdb -setpassword <slot ID>

mkpassdb actually is for directly manipulation of PasswordServer.
