Lost function of button 3 and 4 on Mighty Mouse

For the last few months, I've used a Logitech trackball on my iMac. Recently, I needed to plug the Mighty Mouse back. Buttons 3 and 4 (dashboard, and expose all windows) don't work. I've tried:
1) creating a new user (admin and normal)
2) double checking the keyboard/mouse settings
3) resetting the PRAM
and nothing works. Any idea what could be causing this?

Hello,
This seems to be a frequent complaint from people who have installed the drivers for 3rd-party mice.
See if there is a method to uninstall the driver that came with your other mouse.
Unfortunately, there may not be a way to remove those drivers and revert to the standard built-in drivers.
As a means of experimenting, I would try downloading the latest version of the OS 10.4.x "Combo" update for your computer.
For the Intel computers, this would be:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1047combointel.html
For the PowerPC computers, this would be:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1047comboppc.html
It is entirely possible that if you have the mighty mouse installed and connected when you re-install these updates, that it may over-write the 3rd-party drivers and re-enable the factory drivers (which is what you need).
There is a method to revert to the factory supplied driver. The questionable, and technical, route:
You'll find the directions in the last post at:
http://forums.macnn.com/archive/index.php/t-267713.html
If none of that works, then about all I could suggest is re-installing OS X and avoiding the Installation of any mouse drivers (including those that come with the Mighty Mouse - they are unnecessary and add problems).
I hope this helps.

  • Right button woes with mighty mouse

I have found that the right button on my mighty mouse quite frankly isnt very good. The mouse only detects i have clicked the right button when my left finger is completely lifted off the left mouse button, if it is merely resting on the left hand button, then the mouse detects a left mouse click when in fact it is my right (or middle) finger doing the pressing.!!
Most annoying...it may sound minor, but retraining my left finger to lift up whilst my right is pushing down is proving very tricky indeed!!!
Any ideas??? Any kind of firmware update or anything??
    Anyone??

    Hello, Ben,
This forum is for older, pre-PowerMac G3 Apple hardware, and so probably not the best place for you to get help with your issue. I'd suggest you ask in the MacBook Pro forum and see if someone can offer a suggestion there. It's possible that you just have a defective mouse.
    Good luck.

  • Wireless keyboard and Wireless Mighty Mouse failure

    Hello,
I have just bought an iMac 20" with a wireless keyboard and wireless mighty mouse.
Both the keyboard and mouse will not work properly.
I followed the installation/setup instructions and paired first the keyboard and then mouse. Then the problems started.
    1. Mighty Mouse tracking is dreadful and very slow (even after adjusting mouse properties)
    2. Keyboard started to drop connection and then when awoke started repeating keys (as if key stuck)
    3. Keyboard then disconnected and will not be recognised when searching for Bluetooth devices nor can I pair it again.
    4. When both were working the Airport extreme wireless network would be lost (but I think that this is a red-herring and irrelevant)
Interesting once keyboard stopped working the wireless mouse tracking improved.
The only software I have installed since taking the iMac out of the box are (in order)
    - Running/installing all Apple updates (including firmware 1.1)
    - Installing Firefox 2.0
    - Installing Adobe Reader 8.0
    - Installing Stuffit Reader 11.0
    - Installing Canon Bubble Jet Printer driver
    - Installing latest version of Skype
If I use a USB mouse or keyboard they work ok.
This is the second replace imac within 2 weeks. The first had the same problem.
Can anybody help please as I'm new to Mac's after switching from a PC and I do not want to have to chuck either the keyboard or mouse or have the pain of Apple supplying me with a 3rd replacement iMac

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Congrats on the new Mac.
Did you Repair Disk Permissions after the software updates and installs?
Whether this solves this issue for you, it is something that you should always do. Go to Apps/Ut5ilities/Disk Utility and select your OS X HDD. Press Repair Permissions. Run Repair Permissions until no more repairs are reported.

  • Wireless Keyboard and Wireless Mighty Mouse performing erratically

I got the Apple Wireless Keyboard and Wireless Mighty Mouse as soon as they were available and I haven't had any problems with them until a few days ago. Now, both devices will "disconnect" for a few moments (the screen will show the "Connection lost" icon) and immediately reconnect.
The keyboard usually does it so quickly that it doesn't affect my typing. The Mighty Mouse, however, will sometimes slow down to a very erratic, choppy refresh rate - something like a dusty ball mouse cca. 1994. This usually lasts for about a minute and then fixes itself.
This happens several times per hour. I've tried restarting the computer, restarting the devices (replacing the batteries), removing them as Bluetooth devices and pairing them again, turning Bluetooth on the computer on and off... nothing seems to fix this. Both devices have fresh rechargeable batteries in them, showing nearly-full charge in System Preferences.
Is this a known or common issue? Who's to blame, the mouse and keyboard or the iMac? Has anyone found a reasonable fix?
    Thanks.

    Hi Neven:
See my thread about IDENTICAL situation:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1235070&tstart=30
The erratic behavior is identical, except that only my wireless keyboard is misbehaving. Unlike you, it has become a major hassle for me when I am typing and my keyboard disconnects mid-keystroke. Or, I'm reviewing a website or my work and the keyboard disconnects three/four times in two minutes. Last night, for instance, I was watching something on TV in the background and I saw in amazement as my keyboard just kept disconnecting and reconnecting every 30 seconds.
Otherwise, it is same, same, same: fresh batteries, no other bluetooth devices, 18" distance from the iMAC.
I noticed this began to happen AFTER I downloaded and installed last weeks' iMAC update.
So I reiterate my comment from my own thread:

  • Lost functionality in keyboard and mouse in Snow Leopard

    Hi,
Since installing Snow Leopard I have lost the following functions:
"enter" key on number pad not working
scrolling horizontal w/mighty mouse not working. scrolling vertical with"nub" is superfast. System Pref's no help
Can't print using "Command" "p" in text edit.
I have tried the Combo 10.6.1 updater again but no luck.
    Anyone else having these problems?
20" iMac 2008 Intel, thin alum keyboard.

Just a thought: Adding your problem, which is different from the original posters' (he's using an Apple Keyboard and probably had OS issues), to a thread that has been dead for a couple of months is not the best way to get help.
I'd start a new thread that mentions your keyboard brand in the title, and a complete description of how you installed SL and what you have done (as far as permissions repairs, update reinstallations, keyboard vendor support statements) to solve your issue already.
Who knows, others that are using the same keyboard may recognize the problem and may know a solution from the thread title, plus you will have people working on your problem, not the original posters' (he never posted back, so I assume he fixed his problem).

  • I lost my battery cover to my Mighty Mouse and need to get a new cover! Where can I find one?

I need a Battery cover for my Mighty Mouse.  Where can I get one?

Apple do not supply components like this.   But if you have a premium reseller near you, they may have an old mouse or a spare cover in their workshop.  They usually have some form of support workshop.   Otherwise you could try buy a second hand mouse.

  • What is button 4 on Mighty Mouse?

    Hi,
what exactly is the button 4-setting in the Mighty Mouse settings in Tiger and how can it be configurated.
    Thanks in advance - Christoph

there is also the possible setting "Button 4" and I just wanted to know what that is for and where I can maybe specify what button 4 should do - other than the possibilities that are shown in the drop-down menue. Sorry for making it not clear...
There is also the setting "Button 3" for the scrollball... I don´t want to believe that Apple just wanted to tell us that this is a third and fourth button... that would be obvious, wouldn´t it?
Are you asking what it means if you set a button's function to be "Button 3", or "Button 4"?
They don't do anything directly in OSX. OSX uses Left-click (Button 1) to select, and Right-click (Button 2) for contextual menu. X11 and other applications (such as Maya) may be written to work with a mouse with more than two buttons. When running such an application, the mouse settings determine which of the Mighty Mouse functions (pressing the scroll-ball, or squeezing the side buttons) will be interpreted by the application at the third or fourth button of a multi-button mouse.

  • Making the side buttons of the mighty mouse go back in safari

    Hi,
I found out that I can assign a custom key command to menu items in safari's browse-back-action. I've also seen that these settings are stored in ~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist at the NSUserKeyEquivalents dictionary. Well, is there a hidden way to modify the entries to support Button 4 of my mighty mouse? I can't do that via the preferences panel, but maybe someone knows what to enter there.
    Tekl

i think you're looking too deep. you can configure your mighty mouse buttons from within system preferences --> keyboard and mouse preferences. also, see the apple might mouse web site for more info.
    hope this helps!

  • Random Loss of Secondary Button with Wireless Mighty Mouse 2

Seems that Apple has locked the previous thread on this topic, though I don't know why. People are having issues with Apple hardware, so they lock the thread? Nice.
I'm having this issue with my brand new WMM, and I got it for Christmas and I don't have a receipt. Serial# KY6470E02SE2A
Will I be able to return this piece of crap mouse? The previous thread on this issue dates back to August 8th, 2006 and they haven't been able to fix this yet? Worse yet, they're still selling them! That's bad business if you ask me.

I don't know for sure whether it's hardware or software. Since there has been no software fix issued for this OBVIOUS DEFECT yet, I'm assuming it's a hardware/design problem.
I'm also betting that Apple won't respond to this thread as they didn't respond to the previous one. They did lock it however, so they must have seen all the people complaining about the problem.
I'm really irritated about the arrogant people who recently posted the reviews for the wireless Mighty Mouse at the Apple Online Store. A few say, "Just lift your finger off the left button and right-click works like a charm." No it doesn't! My right-click doesn't work after 15 or so minutes whether no other part of my hand is touching the mouse or not. Perhaps their mouse works fine, but mine and many other's on this board do not. They should not be posting such statements as, "Don't listen to the people who can't right click with their Mighty Mouses. They just don't know how to use it." They haven't used mine, or seen me use it, so how the heck do they know? Their mouse isn't defective, so everyone else's must be perfect too? Ignorant twits. My mouse is defective, and this is a genuine problem.

  • FCP 5.1 and Wireless Mighty Mouse

    Just an informational post:
I have had my wireless mighty mouse since July 27th, and it works well with FCP 5.1 on my G5 Quad. I had abandoned my old wireless mouse (both the Apple and "The Mouse BT") because of jerky operation, delays, lack of precision, etc. I started using a wired mighty mouse
The new Wireless MM works even better than my wired MM; the new laser sensor is more precise, and there is no lag. It works on my wood desk top as well as on the matt black mouse area on my keyboard tray. My G5 is 5 feet away and to the left of my work position, under a wooden desk; there are not metal obstructions between the mouse and the BT antenna.
I really like the scroll wheel (both MM's) for horizontally scrolling the time line as I edit. Used in conjunction with a Shuttle Express, I have all the editing control I use at my fingertips.
    YMMV
    Mac G5 2.5Quad; 4GB Ram; 2x500 internal   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2x500GB FW800; Sony PDX10

thanks for the quick review Edward.

  • Windows 7 and Wireless Mighty Mouse, Wireless Keyboard and sound problem

    Hi,
I just installed Windows 7 x64 Ultimate on my iMac 24" white ( OS X Leopard 10.5 ). Surprisingly, it installed without any problems. The only problems I have now are the Wireless Mighty Mouse and the Wireless Keyboard ( alu ).
After I installed Windows I inserted the Leopard Instal DVD and installed Boot Camp. I got a message right away saying that: "This program has known compatibility issues...". I clicked Run program and continued. Soon I got the same warning, but this time not for Boot Camp, but Intel Chipset Device Software. I clicked Run program yet again and it continued installing. Then I got a different warning: "Service KeyAgent' failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services." I clicked Ignore and installation continued. I got another "Service Mac HAL' failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services." warning, clicked Ignore again and after that it finished soon and I restarted the computer.
When I came back into Windows there was no Apple folder anywhere or any sign that I have just installed Boot Camp ( should there be? )
I installed Boot Camp Update 2.1 for Windows XP ( because Vista x64 version wouldn't start ) and basically I got the same warnings I did when I installed Boot Camp from the Leopard DVD ( described above ). I also tried to instal Boot Camp Update 2.2 for Windows, but it didn't start. I also downloaded Bluetooth Update 1.0, but all I got was a message saying: "This update is not intended for this computer and will not be installed.".
    There is also no sound.
This is basically it, I really hope some of you who run Windows 7 with wireless keyboards and mice can help me, because I desperately need this to work ( I use a Windows only program for school ).
PS. I have a 2007 iMac 24" white and while it is not on the we're-not-supporting-that list for the infamous Windows 7 Boot Camp update, all other iMacs from its generation are. Any ideas?

Found a solution for the "Boot Camp x64 is unsupported on this computer model" message. Here is the link: http://www.techulous.com/hardware/how-to-apple-boot-camp-64-bit-for-windows-7-on -unsupported-macs.html
Everything works ( for ) now. Yay!

  • Toggle Buttons on a Mighty Mouse

My brother and I work in the same office. At times, we have to quickly swith machines to look at a project that is in progress. He's left handed & I'm right handed, therefore our Mighty Mice are reversed on our primary machine. I was trying to (unsuccessfully) write an Applescript that would toggle the primary and secondary buttons so that we wouldn't have to open the open the system prefs. Sort of a "Fast Mouse Switching". Any ideas, or help. I guess you'd have to use GUI-scripting, but I'm no Applescript expert, so I got the pref pane open and the mouse panel chosen. I couldn't get the popups to change though.

  • Lost functionality between CS6 and CC2014

In CS6 if you were zoomed into a photo you could press the space-bar and C to zoom out and treat the window as if it were the navigator pallet... In CC 2014 this option seems to be gone. Is it just hidden or is it really gone and if it is gone where can i request that feature to be added back?

I don't think holding space and C work like a navigator for me in CS6, CC or CC 2014. However holding the "H" key and using the left mouse button work like a navigator on all three.
