Lost grain?

I'm working on a short film in FCP7 and added a bit of grain to my shots to make them feel less like video. I'm using the Nattress Film Effects plugin. The grain looks great in FCP, as does the movie I export from the sequence. However something seems to happen in either Compressor or DVD Studio Pro that causes the grain to disappear. When I play back my burned DVD it looks like smooth video again -- no noticeable grain. My only thought is that I'm burning a standard def disc and the grain is so fine that such details/subtlties are simply lost, but I'm not sure if that is the case.
Has anyone had a similar experience or have any ideas what might be happening? Thanks in advance for any thoughts/suggestions.

Not to solve the lost grain question, but more to the "I don't want it to look like video" point, I find two things useful.
- Address the Gamma. You need something like Nattress's Film look tools or use Color to stretch the color and luma distribution into a film S curve. Dealing with this goes a long way to changing the "video" look.
- The other thing that sets video apart from "film" is the frame rate. Video usually looks much smoother due to the higher 60 fields per second or 30 progressive frames per second recording rate. The 24p fps frame rate of film has an immediate visual impact. If you go that direction, use Compressor and set the retiming setting in Frame Tools to Better (not best) as a start. Best does yield slightly better images. However, they may not be noticably improved and they come at a really significant computational time increase.
Of course, well lit, well recorded material can be pushed and pulled much more effectively. It's really hard to do much with murky or over exposed material.

Object XMP lost on PDF export

Hi there,
our workflow relies on the fact that XMP metadata from individual layout objects in InDesign CS5.5 documents will be exported to PDF >= 1.4 (no flattening, live transparency).
We found that application of certain effects to placed images in InDesign CS5.5 causes a loss of XMP metadata for these layout objects in the finally exported PDF file.
This does not happen w/ all effects: namely those which create a transparent mask to overlay a placed object - inner shadow + glow, bevel & emboss and satin - lead to lost XMP metadata. Not affected are drop shadow, outer glow and the *_feather effects.
In all cases the exported PDF document contains separate objects for the original image and an additional SMask for transparently rendering the effect. There is no flattening applied.
Does anyone in this forum have any idea how this behaviour could be avoided?
If it's a bug, it may be fixed in CS6? ... or should I file a bug report?

With reference to my original post, I checked a test version of ID CS6 today and found that the problems with certain effects and loss of XMP metadata after export to PDF persist.
Since there seems to be - at least some - interest in this topic, I'd like to give a brief summary of what from my experience with CS5.5 currently works ok and where some problems remain. Please take this with a grain of salt since it's mostly from memory, but I may provide further details, if needed.
For placed images export to PDF generally preserves XMP metadata, independent of image format. There are issues with legacy IPTC metadata in case of IPTC format errors or lack of synchronisation between IPTC and XMP according to the IPTC core specification. Worst case export behaviour here is the replacement of original XMP with a new, rudimentary XMP dataset containing only some basic elements. There is another situation where XMP metadata is lost if certain effects are applied to a placed image. Please see my original post for reference.
Object level metadata for placed vector graphics is supported since at least CS5 (compared to CS2). Don't know exactly which version introduced this feature though. There is a problem with"Illustrator 8" compatible EPS files - AFAIK these do not support XMP metadata at all. Vector files in native Illustrator format are also ok,
Placed documents (PDF, EPS) are embedded as marked content sequences in the PDF content stream. Document level metadata is preserved and is referenced as a property of the marked content sequence. Object level metadata _inside_ the placed document should be preserved as well, although I haven't investigated this any further, since I'm currently only interested in the top level objects and their XMP data.
I have witnessed fragmentation due to transparency flattening mostly for placed documents, which have not been "properly" prepared (e.g. exported to PDF-1.3 format or distilled from Postscript). In that case all objects in their original form are replaced by flattened image fragments. With the original objects their associated XMP metadata is of course lost as well.
So much for now.

Relating facts with different grains

I'm having an issue designing a cube/star schema where I need to relate 2 fact tables that are at a different grain.
I currently have a star with 1 fact table (Insurance Premium) and 3 dimensions (Date, Account, Policy). The fact table has 1 row for each policy within each account for every quarter (quarterly snapshot). The measure is Premium.
We need to enhance this star with a new fact table that stores Lost Accounts for each quarter. The difference with this data is that we only get it at the Account Level. So the Fact table will have 1 row for each lost account per quarter. The
measure is Lost Premium.
I created the Lost Business Fact table which relates to the same Date and Account dimension as the Insurance Premium Fact table. In the cube, i created a new measure group for the Lost Premium fact table and related it to the same Date and Account
dimensions.
the 2 issues that I am having are:
1. In the Policy Dimension table, there is a field called AccountBroker, which stores the Broker for the account. So if the account has 5 policies, this table will have 5 rows and the AccountBroker field will be the same for each row. The
end users want to be able to use this field (AccountBroker) in the Lost Premium Fact table so that they can slice and dice the Lost Premium by Account Broker. The issue is that I'm not sure how to relate the Lost Premium Fact to the Policy Dimension
since the Lost Premium Fact is at Account level and the Policy Dimension is at Policy Level.
2. The other issue is that when we receive the Lost Business File for each quarter, the account may not be present in the Premium Fact because it was lost. So for example, for Q1 2014, account 1234 was lost and we receive a record in the Lost
Business File with Account 1234 as being lost and it gets inserted into the Lost Premium Fact. However, when we get the file that loads the Insurance Premium Fact for Q1 2014, this account is not present because it was lost in that quarter, so there
is no way to link the records. My first thought was to maybe take the records from the previous quarter (Q4 2012) and insert those records for Q1 2014 into the Insurance Premium Fact with 0 premium so that they exist and then there will be a match, but
not sure if there is a better design.

For me,
DEPT_FACT is not a fact. It's a dimension table because you have a one-to-many relationship and you have a measure in the dimension table (it's an aggregated measure).
And EMP_FACT is also not a fact because you don't have any measure on it.
But if we say that EMP_FACT is a fact. DEPT_FACT is an aggregated table from EMP_FACT.
I will :
* create a logical dimension for the employee with three levels (all, departement and detail)
* create a logical fact table with :
- one logical column for the revenue in the level all departement
- one logical column for the employee
and two physical source :
* DEPT_FACT with the departement level
* EMP_FACT with the level to detail

Fx effect gallery grain troubles

I want to aply a grain effect to a gradient on a shape. Let's say i create a rectangle with round corners , then i apply a linear
gradient, as soon as i apply the grain effect , those soft round corners are now raster ! I'm lost

Drag the "Grain" item into the "Fill" item. That way the grain will only effect the fill. It will help a little bit. But realize those are raster effects and rounded areas are prone to typical raster problems like stair steps.
A better method maybe to create a standard recrangle with the gradient and grain, then apply a rounded corner clipping mask on top of it.

[SOLVED] Lost customized KDE Desktop config - reverted to default

I'm using KDE 4.3.1. I lost the customized configuration of my Desktop, i.e. wallpaper image, launchers for widgets and applications that were present in the bottom panel and in the system tray, clock configuration, Desktop icons, etc. All of this reverted to the default configuration. This is the second or third time this has happened in the last few months, and it happens out of the blue, i.e. from one startup to the next. Obviously, KDE upon starting up can't find the config file(s) in which my custom settings are stored and which it was able to access before without any problem.
My questions:
1. What could have brought this on, i.e. why does KDE suddenly fail to load my custom Desktop config? Could there be a problem in accessing the appropriate HDD sector, i.e. possibly imminent HDD failure?
2. What is/are the file(s) in which my custom Desktop settings are stored? Is there an automatic backup of these file(s) from which I could easily restore my previous custom settings? Or could I simply reload the appropriate file(s) from my rsync backup of my home dir that I did just a week ago?

Thanks for your comment. I run smartctl occasionally, mostly to check the temperature of the HDD in my laptop. Ran it again just now but the drive passed. The only thing that looks rather high is the load cycle count (53323) but I remember reading some time ago when I was alarmed by this that smartctl sometimes puts out anomalously high values for this parameter that don't mean anything.
So, I don't really think my internal HDD is sick. No other file reading failures have occurrred recently. The 2 or 3 times this particular problem had occurred recently, I'd restarted or shutdown the system in the standard way and restart/shutdown proceeded normally. The filesystem for /home is reiserfs3 which is a journaling filesystem.
I'm not much concerned about this anymore - now that I know how to restore my custom Desktop config files, it's no big deal if this happens again. If it's some flakyness in KDE 4.3, it might be gone in future releases.

Adobe cloud has lost connection with the server, can't get adobe cloud to work so I can re-install photoshop to fix a corrupted DLL file.

Try iTunes Folder Watch or iTunes Library Updater. Folder Watch is much faster on the adding files front, can be set to run in the background and includes a useful exclusion feature, however it’s slow at removing orphans. iTLU is better for this although doing it manually after looking at a list of proposed removals generated by Folder Watch is probably faster still. iTLU can also be set to update iTunes when you've used 3rd party tools to change tag info.
You may need to amend the list of file types these programs look for. My list includes:
.mp3 .mp4 .m4a .m4b .m4p .m4v .mov .wav .aif .mid .ipa .ipg .ite .itlp .m4r .pdf
Note the last 6 types may not be recognised as already being in the library so should either be omitted from the search or you can add (at least for Folder Watch) individual exclusions for files you know are already in your library.

Mobile Me CONTACTS not coming down to iOS4 and lost visual voicemail

I updated my 3GS to iOS4 and everything seems to be working, howver my contacts haen't repopulated the phone form Mobile Me. they are all still there on Mobile Me, but when I go to contacts on the iPhone, there are none and unlike previously, opening contacts on the phone does not force a sync (no spinning clock-wheel)...
I have tried turning off the Mobile Me setting on the iphone and then restarting it, but still no contacts...
I also lost my visual voicemail.... when I go to voicemail, it wants me to physically dial up voicemail...
Any ideas here?

Huh? A "bug" would affect all devices using the OS. I have no idea what you are talking about as push worked just fine here after allowing a little time for my phone to be re-provisioned by the network. That took longer than normal due, I'm sure, to the large number of folks trying to do the same thing I was. And we've all hear AT&T whine that we evil iPhone users are breaking their network.

It sounds like the cellular data will not activate for some reason on the iPad.
I found this article that will help you resolve this issue here, named iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular Models): Troubleshooting a cellular data connection, found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4249
Check for a carrier settings update.
Update your iPad.
Toggle the Cellular Data setting off and on under Settings > Cellular Data.
Restart your iPad.
Tap Settings > General > About. Locate the Carrier entry and make sure that your carrier is correct.
If your SIM card has SIM PIN enabled, try turning it off: Tap Settings > Cellular Data > SIM PIN.
Make sure you're in an area of good coverage. If the cellular data connection works in another area, contact your carrier to report the original affected area.
Reset network settings: Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Restore the iPad as new.
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, make an appointment at an Apple Retail Store, contact your carrier, or contact AppleCare to troubleshoot further.
I know you may have done one or two of the steps here, so you can skip those.

Webmail timeouts and lost mail

I have seen several topics here with people complaining that Webmail times out when they are composing outgoing mail, and lose it when they hit send. However, none of these existing posts seem to have valid fixes or responses, and they all seem to be locked down to prevent new comments, so here is my two cents:
1. I have absolutely experienced the same thing. I've finally gotten into the habit of composing e-mail in an external editor, because I am sick and tired of wasting time recomposing lost e-mail.
2. The Verizon FAQ states two, contradictory policies, both of which are inaccurate:

Due to security reasons, Webmail Basic does timeout after 20 minutes of inactivity. However, messages that were being composed before your session timed out will be saved in the DRAFTS folder.
The first one is outright wrong. Webmail absolutely, positively DOES time out.
The second one is wrong, at least in some circumstances. I have no doubt that this is their desired policy, but like many other customers, I'm here to tell you that under at least some circumstances, Webmai-l times out in as little as 5 minutes, and in these same circumstances, IT DOES NOT SAVE YOUR COMPOSED E-MAIL TO THE DRAFTS FOLDER. It simplay takes you to the log in screen, and when you log back in, your text is irretrievably gone. Verizon Webmail has not auto-saved anything for me in at least a year.
3. I have a theory as to what is going on here, and I am testing it today. Maybe one or two other folks can try this, too. I will report back whatever I find:

However, I notice that if I login fresh from www.verizon.net and navigate to Webmail, I GET DIFFERENT SESSION COOKIES THAN I DO FROM THE ABOVE BOOKMARK. For example, I get a cookie called -_WL_AUTHCOOKIE_VZCSESSIONID which is not present when I log in using the old bookmark.. There are a couple of other variations, but this seems the most suspicious.
So, my theory is that those of us who often lose composed e-mail after ridiculously short time outs, are logging in from old bookmarks, and that things changed underneath us at some point during a Verizon Webmail update. I am going to try usng Webmail today from a fresh login, after first clearing out all my existing Verizon cookies, and see if this results in longer sessions without timing out, and saved messages when it does time out.

Oh, and don't even get me started on SEARCH for text within a message. This has never worked, from Day One.
All I ever get is "We were unable to perform your request. Please try again." SEARCH on header text, like Sender and Subject works fine, but apparently Verizon QA has never tested the other options on large mail inboxes.
I'm pretty forgiving and undersrtanding of minor glitches and shortcomings in software, but Verizon Webmail is one of the most unreliable utilities that I've ever encountered from a large company with a huge customer base.

I would just follow the instructions from this article to give your unused 4s to your spouse. Since you have already started using your 5s, you will still be receiving iMessages on that phone and will have no need to receive them on a device that has been replaced. Look in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library Folder, where you will find a "Calendars" Folder, which can be replaced using Time Machine.
Make sure that you quit iCal before attempting to replace the folder, and choose a timeline when the group last existed.

Query time affected when using dimensions that are at a lower grain

I have a product dimension that has one hierarchy and 7 levels: All Product -> Category -> BU -> Class -> Department -> SubDept -> Item. The lowest level has about 8 million members. The Department level has about 1500 members
Some of my Cubes are actually mapped to fact tables where the grain is at Department level. So I've ensured that in the Cube Mappings Editor, the Department Id of the fact table is mapped to the Department level of the Product Dimension, and I can actually see in the Cube's Aggmap, it is using LOAD_STATUS to limit the Product dimension to the Department level members for the aggregation.
Querying the Cube using SQL brings back the correct result across different level combination, however the query constantly takes about 2 - 3 mins to complete.
As a test, I've built another dimension that goes down to the Department level only, and issue the same query against the Cube. The difference is significant as the query takes roughly less than 1 second to complete, and returns exactly the same result.
Any idea? I am using AWM 11.2.0.1.0A

The stats you posted are puzzling. Usually the sum of loop and fetch time is close to the total time, but there is a big missing chunk of time in your case. It is clearly related to the calculated measures, since removing them solves the problem.
The most common problem with calculated measures is that they can cause the cube to loop densely (i.e. all logical member combinations) instead of sparsely (i.e. only the member combinations that have data). But I don't think this is the problem in your case since the difference between rows_read and rows_returned is small

If dense looping has happened then the rows_read is often orders of magnitude greater than rows_returned. You can see the looping strategy by running

So it may be worth checking the loop descriptor for your fast and slow cases, but my best guess at the moment is that the performance gap has something to do with your specific calculations. If I were you I would add them back one at a time to see if you can find a particular measure, or type of measure, that is causing the slowdown.
