Lost half my info on a external---need help

Last night I powered up my mac, and my external firewire wasn't recognized by my mac ( it does that sometimes) I changed my connection and used a fire wire 400...and for some reason only a few of the icons for my data,applications, folders ect...were showing in the drive. I shut it down then started again (thinking it was some mistake) then I noticed it wasn't....I lost every digital pic I took over the past several years. I just recently moved my picture folder to my external to make room. I lost so many other items, this is devestating. Is there anything I can do to restore the data. I am using a simple tech 1tb prodrive

Hi-
For now, stop using the drive.
The data is still there, and can be recovered if it isn't written over.
You will need Data Rescue and another drive of approx. 1.5x the size of the amount of data that you have- 500 GB needs about 750 GB for the software to work easily.
You can download Data Rescue and then start in when you have a drive available to recover to.
Just follow instructions.

DR does an excellent job of recovering photos, as well as other items.

    lost all email gmail messages deleted by mistake need help thank you.

    Mail 2.x doesn’t store mail in standard mbox format. The only way you might find Mail messages in a “recovered” mbox file is if it was a Mail 1.x file that Mail 2.x left there after the conversion to the new *.emlx format when you upgraded from Mac OS X 10.3 or earlier to Mac OS X 10.4.
    If you’re running Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and don’t have a backup, what you should have tried to recover are as many *.emlx files as possible. Data Rescue II may be able to do that, but the documentation doesn’t say so. The only data recovery utility that I know for sure can currently recover deleted *.emlx files is FileSalvage.
    That said, you may still try to import those mbox files as Other (not as Mail for Mac OS X), and hope that they don’t contain garbage that causes Mail to crash — you may look at their contents with a text editor first to check whether there are actually any emails there.
    Beware, however, that anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted *.emlx files to be overwritten if you don’t try to recover them first.

  • I Lost All Of My Itunes Music. Need Help! Quick!!

    Hi,
    I recently lost all of my itunes music, from a Hard Drive failure, meaning i had to reinstall windows, losing all of my files on my computer. But also losing all of my music which i paid for on itunes, Is there anyway to get it back?!
    PLEASE!

    If you didn't make a back-up of your music/movie purchases to restore from (as you are advised to do) then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
    "Products may only be downloaded once; after being downloaded, they cannot be replaced if lost for any reason. Once a Product is purchased or rented (as applicable) and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage" iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
    If you have an iPod that still has any of your purchases on it you'll find details in this article on how to transfer them to the computer: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
    Purchased applications can be downloaded over again, see this article for details: How to redownload purchased applications from the App Store
    Failing this, you could try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on this link it'll take you to the support/contact page: Customer Service - iTunes Store Support

  • Lost company's files in reformat. Need Help.

    Note, I'm not a Tech person. I'm a graphic designer. We are very short-staffed and Tech was too busy to reformat so I went ahead and did it. The reformat was done as so:
    • Upgraded to Yosemite using the Apple ID of my boss.
    • No files on Mac Hard Drive. Company protocol is to use external HDDs. I only backed up desktop and downloads.
    • Did a reformat on restart, registered mac on my own Apple ID
    • Changed name of Mac
    The problem arose when I tried to access the files on the external hard drive. All of the files were there except for those of the user who was using the mac before me. His folder appeared as "NO NAME" and as an alias of only 738 KB. However the drive was still 912/1000GB used. So practically full.
    I have no idea what happened but my guesses are:
    Was the external drive already full so he was actually using the internal hard drive..
    Is the alias just some snafu that needs to be fixed in prefs..
    And my question is can this be fixed? We have essential files from that previous user. Thanks Mac Community. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

    You posted in the support forum for the Apple routers......these products:
    Can you help us understand how your question would involve one of these products?
    It appears that you have a question about Yosemite (10.10.1).  If that is the case, the place to post your question would be in the Yosemite support forum. The link is just below:

    My computer recently crashed, and I never backed up the music on disk, however I do still have the music on my Ipod, but can't transfer it into Itunes. I had copypod before which would've worked now, but I don't want to pay for another copy. Is there any free software out there which will let me copy the music into Itunes without a certain song limit or trial use?

  • Lost temporary file in Word 2010. really need help

    I did two stupid things:
    1. I downloaded a word document from gmail but I chose to open it directly instead of saving it and then opening it.  I am sure this created a temporary file somewhere.  I had to Enable Editing afterwards.
    2. I made several edits to the document and then didn't save it.
    A few minutes ago, my Microsoft Word window just CLOSED.  I don't know if it crashed.  There was no message about any errors, it just disappeared from my taskbar.
    I would assume that Word would continue to autosave with a temp file just as it does with a standard file, but I guess I am wrong.  I tried checking the Autosave directory for Word and found nothing.  I believe I opened the file using Internet
    Explorer 9, so I checked the temp internet files folder in Internet Options and also found nothing.  The file does not show up in my list of recent documents, and opening Word did not show me any prompt to restore Autosaved files.
    Can anyone give me some guidance on how I can get back my document with all of its edits?  It must have been stored as a temporary file SOMEWHERE.  I am trying to use Recuva to see if I can find it as a deleted file, but some professional guidance
    as to which folders I should focus on or what the file might have been named would be helpful (do Autosaves of temp documents get some obscure name, for instance?)
    For example, I tested by opening a text file from an email in gmail, and then I tried finding where that text file exists and I could not locate it nor did Windows Explorer search find it, so I'm hoping the file is hiding in that same place.
    I'm running Word 2010 on Windows 7 Ultimate.  Thanks.

    I found the file.  It was located in \user\appdata\local\microsoft\windows\temporary internet files\content.ie5\gibberishdirectory\.  The strange thing is that I can only browse up to \windows\ in that directory path in Windows Explorer and then
    \temporary internet files\ does not appear.  I do have "Show hidden files and folders" on, so I don't understand why I can't see it.  Windows Search was not helpful either.  I finally found the file by downloading and installing the freeware
    "Super Finder" which located the file and the secret directory in about 30 seconds (I told it to search in \user\appdata\ because my hunch was I'd find the file there).  Maybe it has something to do with IE9's protected mode?

  • Need help with centering my page

    I have done everything I can think of, including going through the many posts here to try and correct this with no luck
    Please look at:
    http://ebnerproductions.com
    and
    http://ebnerproductions.com/index2.htm
    The first was built with basically just html.
    The 2nd was done "properly" I believe with CSS and HTML. The 2nd also has "div - #wrapper"
    left and right margins are auto also... nothing changed.
    Do I need to change something in the CSS from absolute, to fixed or inherit?
    I am completely lost at this point and really really need help.
    Thank you again in advance....
    Adam Ebner

    Your CSS is corrupted -
    :visited {
        color: #6CF;<meta name="keywords"
    (note the appearance of the meta tag within the :visited selector)
    Fix that.
    Then you would need to add this rule to the fixed CSS by changing this -
    body {
        background-color: #EBEBEB;
        background-image: url(BG.jpg);
        margin-left: 75px;
        margin-top: 75px;
        background-repeat: no-repeat;
    to this -
    body {
        background-color: #EBEBEB;
        background-image: url(BG.jpg);
        margin-left: 75px;
        margin-top: 75px;
        background-repeat: no-repeat;
        width:1346px;
        margin:75px auto;
    Then ask yourself how many people will even see this page center since 1346 is way wider than the average browser viewport width on most systems.

    You should be able to reconnect to iTunes and then you should see an option to restore to your ipad from your last back up in iTunes.

  • My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk).  Can I do this?

    My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk) for a few weeks.  This same disk was used to back-up the Pro earlier, and to migrate from the Pro to the Air.  Can I do this "back-migration" from the Air to the Pro?  Is it maybe better just to migrate the specific folders (Outlook email, Office docs) I am sure I need?

    Do not attempt to copy files/folders from a Time Machine backup. Only use the Time Machine application to restore from the backup.
    Click on a Finder window and select Help from the Finder's Help menu. Search for "restore" and select "restore items backed up with time machine" from the hints list. You will find these two articles:
    Recover items using Time Machine and Spotlight
    If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can use Time Machine with Spotlight to recover lost or deleted items.
    Note: You can retrieve earlier versions of TextEdit documents from within TextEdit. For more information, see:
    View and restore past versions of documents
    Open a Finder window and type a search word or phrase in the search field in the upper-right corner.
    Select a location to search in the location bar.
    Refine the results by specifying search criteria. Narrow down Spotlight search results
    Open the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, then choose Enter Time Machine.
    Use the arrows and timeline to browse the Time Machine backups. Your search is performed in every window.
    When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore.
    The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it’s returned to the Documents folder.
    Restore items backed up with Time Machine
    If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can easily bring back lost items or recover older versions of files.
    You can use Time Machine within many apps. If the iCloud Documents & Data feature is turned on, you can recover older versions of iCloud documents as well as regular documents.
    Open a window for the item you want to restore.For example, if you accidentally deleted a file from your Documents folder, open the Documents folder. To recover an email message, open your inbox in Mail. To recover an iCloud document, open the document’s app, choose File > Open, then click iCloud to view the iCloud documents for that app.If you’re missing an item from the desktop, you don’t need to open a window.
    From the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, choose Enter Time Machine. A message may appear while your Mac connects to the backup disk.
    Use the arrows and timeline to browse the snapshots and backups.White tick marks represent snapshots stored on your internal drive (portable computers only). Pink tick marks represent backups stored on your backup disk. If a tick mark appears dimmed or grayed, there’s no backup available or the backup disk is not connected.
    For more information about an item, double-click it.The windows in Time Machine behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
    When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore. You can restore individual items, multiple items, folders, or your entire hard disk.The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it is returned to the Documents folder.
