Lost hard drive, can I retrieve music from ipod?

I need some help I lost my hard drive and didn't back-up my iTunes so I lost everything. Is there a way to transfer the music from my iPod to either my computer or to iTunes? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hard drive crashed, need transfer music from ipod to new computer

Installed iTunes on laptop, hooked up my iPod & tried to drag and drop music into library, but it will not allow files to come over.

You can't drag and drop content from an iPod to iTunes however there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • New hard drive, how to import music from ipod.

I already added my Purchased songs to the new iTunes on my computer. Is there any way to import all of 500+ songs that are from CDs that are on my ipod onto iTunes? I can't reupload the CDs to my computer because I live in Korea now and all my CDs are in the states. And if I can't upload these songs onto my computer, is there a way for me to download new music on iTunes and add them to my ipod without losing my 500 songs that are on my ipod but not the computer?

The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases.
Copy everything from your backup copy of your computer.

I lost my hard drive, can I retrieve my itunes library from my Ipod Nano?

It has always been very basic to always maintain  a backup copy of your computer.
Have you failed to do this?
If so, not good, then you can transfer itunes purchases from the ipod:  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases

Can i transfer music from ipod to a new computer i do not have my old computer files as it crashed.

For purchased songs you can plug the iPod into you new computer and use the "File > Transfer Purchases from iPod" feature in iTunes. For music not purchased from the iTunes store you will need a third party program to help. There are a few of them out there, and they are easy to find on Google.

  • Lost my hard drive. How to transfer from IPOD to MacBook -OR!- Match?

I lost my entire harddrive on my W7 PC.  I have most (but not all) of my music on my iPod.  I just purchased a MacBook Pro, and iPhone 5, and subscribed to iTunes Match.  QUESTION: How can I transfer all the songs on my iPod, from the ipod up into iTunes Match?  In order to get those songs on ITunes in the new MacBook.  Or is there a better way?  Perhaps it is better to try and rip the songs off the iPod into iTunes and then up to iTunes Match??
(Point of note - not all of these songs that I lost were from CD's, or from iTunes purchases.  Yes, many of them came from YouTube.  I mention it so as to save any misdirection people might offer as a solution)  Thank You!

You can use MobiKin Assistant for iOS to transfer data or files from iPod to computer directly. It is an excellent software and can sync data from iOS device to computer easily. These data including text messages, contacts, music, photos, video, tv shows, voice memos, podcasts, ringtones, books, etc. Beside, it can support almost all iOS devices, including the latest iPhone 6 plus/6, iPhone 5s/5/4s/4, iPad air/mini, iPod, etc. High compatibility make it become the one of most professional iOS tools. You can have a free try. Believe it can help you a lots.

  • Old hard drive damaged; how to upload from iPod to new computer

The hard drive on my old computer was damaged. I had not backed up all of my iTunes library to either a DVD or external drive. My iPod classic has about 6,300 songs. I just purchased a new computer. Is it possible to upload all of the songs on my iPod to the new iTunes library on the new computer? I assume I will get a message telling me that the computer is not authorized. I am not all that tech savvy, so I don't want to hit "sync" and lose all my non-Apple purchased music. Thanks.

Hey there again, here's another answer.
Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library. There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to the iTunes preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'control+shift' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.

For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump and iPodRobot.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • How to retrieve music from ipod without syncing it

So my computer was messed up and I'm missing a bunch of music so i was needing to get the music files back. I have them on my ipod but i cant view them in itunes unless i sync the ipod which would erase the songs not on the computer and defeat the purpose of what i'm trying to do. I have the 'manually manage music' option checked and when i open up my ipod file from my computer it doesn't have the music files only pictures and stuff. I know it's possible to get the music without erasing it but i forget how and its really annoying, so how would i do so?

Here is the way about how to recover music from iPod
Assuming you're using a Windows 7 or 8 computer here.
Go to the start menu > type in hidd > open 'Show Hidden Files and Folders' > check the circle in that says Show hidden files, folders, and drives. > Click apply.
Now plug your iPod in. Go to Computer > click on eg. 'Azrielrain's ipo (H:)' or whatever shows up that looks like that > iPod_Control > Music > The files underneath that.
Now in those files will be mp3 or mp3 variants of your music, they will NOT however have the original names given to them. You can copy the files to your desktop, or music folder. That is pretty much the closest you'll get to being able to salvage your music from your iPod. Or you can use Data Recovery to help you recover your iPod music.

  • How can I transfer music from iPod to iTunes?

All of the music on my iPod nano is in my ex-husband's iTunes on a Mac. Now have a Windows PC and want to transfer music from iPod to iTunes. Computer says 'Need to Format disk in Drive E'. Will this lose everything? Not sure what the best way is to do everything but haven't got any way of backing up my iPod at present. Thank you!

any itunes purchased music can be transferred from phone to pc via hitting the "transfer purchases" option when u right click on the phone under devices in itunes on the computer when it is plugged in. any non-itunes purchased music is stuck on the phone and cannot be transferred to the computer. u will have to load it onto the computer from the original source or from the old computer.

  • Can I move music from IPOD to new computer?

My old laptop died. So I have a new one. I have 30 GB of music on my IPOD classic right now. But I want to transfer the music to my ITUNES library on my new laptop.
Is there a way to do this? There should be. I don't want to have to copy all my CDs to my new laptop. Why can't I just transfer the IPOD content to a new computer?

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.
How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.

Can I put music from old iPod Shuffle, synced to computer A, onto new iPhone4, synced to computer B?  Both devices and both computers belong to me.  Computers are not on same LAN.

You can if the music was puchased with the same AppleID.
Synch the iPod Shuffle with computer B to get it's songs onto that computer.  Then resynch the iPhone4 to computer B.
