Lost Hard Drive How to Recover Data?

Hello Apple Team,
I hope someone at Apple can help me with my problem. I was partitioning my secondary Hard Drive on bay 2 using boot camp assistants to partition my HD and I partition the whole drive. I lost all my personal data and would love to get it back. Can someone help me with a how-to or and application to fix this problem.
Spec:
Mac Pro
Mac OS 10.4.9
Two Hard Drive
Thanks for any type of help
Joe

Basics of File Recovery
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When you delete files you erase only the directory entries, not the files themselves. However, the space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Dead Hard Drive - How to Recover?

The hard drive in my iMac recently "died". The Apple Store diagnosed my problem as a failed drive.
Luckily, they allowed me to borrow my failed drive for a couple of days. I was able to use an external USB enclosure and Data Rescue II to recover all of my data to an external drive. Unfortunately, the recovery does not provide a disk image but rather just the folder/file structure from the original drive.
The Apple Store has replaced my drive (under Apple Care Warranty) and now I have an iMac with a fresh install of OS X and nothing else.
Is there a documented procedure on how to recover my home-user folders (including Library), the system Applications folder, and the System Library folder to bring my refreshed Mac back to the previous state?

    Kevin,
Tailor these instructions to match whatever you have done so far within the new installation...
    1) Create new accounts within the new installation, using the exact same usernames and short names that existed in the old installation.
    2) Enable the "root" account, then log in as root.
    3) From the root account, navigate to the "Users" folder. Move all of the newly created HOME folders to the trash. Connect the drive that houses the backed up data, and locate the same-named HOME folders there. Drag them to the new "Users" folder, replacing the folders you moved to the trash.
    4) Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal. At the prompt, type the following:
    <pre style="overflow:auto; font-family: 'Monaco'; font-size: 10px">chown -R username:staff /Users/username</pre>
In the text above, you will replace all instances of "username" with the short name for a replaced account. If the short name is "fred," for example, you will type the following exactly:
    <pre style="overflow:auto; font-family: 'Monaco'; font-size: 10px">chown -R fred:staff /Users/fred</pre>
Verify that the text is correct, then press <RETURN>. When you return to the prompt, perform the same task for the next replaced account, or quit Terminal.
    5) Log into the replaced accounts to test that everything works as expected. If so, log back into the root account, empty the trash, then log out of and disable the root account.
It would be best if you just reinstalled any third-party applications. Keep in mind that the data, settings, etc. for those applications already exist within the restored HOME folders.

  • Lost hard drive, trying to recover

Disk Utility's info is giving me a glimmer of hope, but let me trace my steps first...
I have a Macbook Pro with Leopard that I purchased in the summer of 2008. The Boot Camp Assistant helped me partition about 16 GB for Windows, and when the machine restarted the Windows installer took over (did I do the wrong thing, and was I not supposed to insert the CD before restarting?). Weird: it was NTFS formatting 130170 MB (I should've stopped at that since that's different from what I chose to partition and I foolishly assumed it was some Boot Camp-related bug, like Windows didn't really understand what the Macbook Pro was doing behind the scenes).
Then Windows Setup warned about installing Windows on a partition that already had an OS on it, so I stopped the installation and saw my OS X was gone (e.g. there's nothing when I hold down Option on bootup). When I try to install OS X and it asks me where I want to install it, the the Select a Destination window is blank where it usually says Mac HD or whatever (no disk shows up, and I can't click the Options button). If I boot from the OS X CD, Disk Utility shows me a 186.3 GB FUJITSU drive and disk0 under that says it's Windows NT formatted and has a Capacity of 186.3 GB but Available is only 127.5 GB, and this is the only thing that gives me hope that my data is still there on the 50-60 GB of disk that isn't available.
However, I admit that perhaps it's not available just because Windows only formatted that 127.5 GB, so the rest is a nebulous blob. But why did Windows only format part of the disk to begin with if it was trying to format the whole thing? Did the Macbook Pro protect that part of the disk where OS X was residing?
How can I find out and if that's the case, how can I recover it?

    No backup. I mean,
    Ridiculous, I know!
The guys behind the Genius Bar said nothing could be recovered. At least the Apple Store was kind enough to once again do me a favor even though I've never had AppleCare. The guy wanted to check to make sure the memory wasn't negatively affected, so they kept the machine for a few hours and reinstalled the OS.
When I got it home, I tried Boot Camp again, and I saw the same weird issue: after Boot Camp created a partition for Windows, the Windows Setup running from my XP Pro CD did NOT see that partition (it only saw one volume). This time I Googled around and found out other folks have run into this issue.
Someone suggested I try a different Win XP CD in case that was the problem, and sure enough, a different Win XP CD was able to see the partition created for Windows by Boot Camp! Both of these CDs had SP2 and both had nice and shiny holograms on them, so I'm not sure what the difference was--I got both of them so long ago I don't even remember the story behind each one. Anyway, now I've got Windows on my machine (which I needed for a training class I'm taking).

  • Lost hard drive how do I move music and pictures from iPhone to new drive

I lost the external drive that had itunes on it. How do I get all my music and pictures from my iPhone to the new iTunes program?

Music is not stored in the iCloud. Past purchases can be reloaded from the cloud, and iTunes Match provides this function to non-purchased music.

Lost my hard drive and also an Ipad, but have 7 k photos on a Touch that I need to load on fixed IMAC with a new hard drive, how do I do it. (There were more photos than the 7k, but they were saved on other drives, thank goodness).  7K pohotos on the Touch are no where else, must be saved!  Just never went from a Touch to iMac.  I have the cable hooked up and then what, I don't want to mess up,my last chance to save 7k pics!  New Aperture and IPhoto on IMAC with no other photos loaded on the new hard drive yet.

I'd ask in the iTouch forum where there are more iTouch users there than here and they should know how to off load the photos.  It might take a 3rd party app.

  • How can i reformat my external hard drive without loosing any data?

how can i reformat my external hard drive without loosing any data?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
It's impossible to format a hard drive without losing the data. One thing you can do before formatting is to copy the files from the external drive to your internal drive, and then, format the external drive. After formatting, copy the files to the external drive again, and everything will be as before formatting it

    Many thanks lllaass,
The Touch Copy third party software for PC's is the way to go it seems and although the demo is free, if you have over 100 songs then it costs £15 to buy the software which seems not a lot to pay for peace of mind. and restoring your iTunes library back to how it was.

  • When I plug in my ipad it automatically tries to back up and download all the contents to the C drive - the PC is too full and I have iTunes on an external hard drive, how do I tell the system to do the backup to the hard drive please?

When I plug in my ipad it automatically tires to back up and download all the contents to the C drive - the PC is too full and I have iTunes on an external hard drive, how do I tell the system to do the backup to the hard drive please?

You can open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up.
To move the current backup folder from C: to D: type in this command and press <Enter>
    Move "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
Where <User> is your Windows user name.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location type in this command and press <Enter>
    MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
If your external drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "D:\Backup" accordingly in both commands.

  • Lost hard drive space

Hi, I just bought mac mini which is working great but I have lost a lot of hard drive space. My mini says it has 74.5 GB hard drive according to the system profiler, but after doing the transferring of information as per the Mac mini user guide using a firewire cable between my old emac and my mini now I only have 12.3 GB left on my hard drive.
I know I had about 22 GB of info on my emac, so does that mean the the mini comes with over 40 GB’s of stuff on it from the factory? I think maybe I messed up some place. I know I now have two administrators on the mini. One is the new one I set up, the other is the old one that was transferred from the emac.
I must have duplicated something, but if anybody has any ideas on how to gain back some lost hard drive space I love to hear form you.
    Thanks, Brad
Ps. I tried to post last night but today when I went to find it nothing came up. I hope I'm not double posting.

Thanks Ian, I did what you suggested and down loaded "whatsize" then ran the program. What it found was that in the Library>Logs>Console>502file there was a strange log in file that and 25GB's of ishock controller logons.
I guess what happened is that when I transferred the info from my emac the ishock controller app. and driver was also transferred but the mac mini didn't like that. Every time I started up the computer it would cause the ishock to logon which took up a bunch of hard drive space. So I just deleted the file restarted and like magic I gained back 25 GB's
    Thanks for your help!

There is another option if the Macbook will start up in Target Disk Mode.
Restart the computer while holding down the T key. If you see the firewire symbol moving around on the screen you can connect this one to another one in TDM. You will need a suitable cable to connect the two Macs.

Circle and cross through iTunes icon: had the seagate hard drive replaced and restored data from time machine backup. Why does the iTunes icon have a circle and cross through it? As though incomplete? tried everything and still Circle and cross through iTunes icon.

No it isn't something you'd find on the computer, it has to be custom installed from the 10.6 installer disc or Software Update if it wasn't before.  It allows you to use older PowerPC applications on your Mac.   On the other hand double check the version of iTunes you have does not require 10.7 minimum either.
