Lost in Migration

I've just purchased my first Mac, Macbook Pro 17" ; yea it's a size thing.  Anyway i transferd all files eg; photos music to the Mac using the migration tool after 49 min I can't locate any files, what did I do wrong.

You may have created a new User Account for your new computer, and it is not same one as the account whose files you imported.
The files are probably there, but under a different Account.

  • AddressBook groups lost after migration to iCloud

Hey everyone, just to share the solution with you.
If bought my wife an iPad2 2 weeks ago and in order to allow for a smooth transition I upgraded her MacBook a week earlier to Mac OS X Lion and set up her iCloud account, i.e. I migrated her Mobile Me account to iCloud.
However, during the migration (Mac MobileMe > iCloud) her AddressBook lost all Groups (I checked this with the corresponding date of out Time Capsule backup). Any attempt to restore the backup and sync the contacts again does not restore the groups. After some reading on the Apple Support Communities and on other sides here's the solution.
Note: I assume you use Time Capsule and your backup is properly working.
    1. In case you've changed/added addresses create a back-up of all contacts:
        - On the Mac user AddressBook make sure you have "All Contacts" selected, then click on one contact ans select all by CMD-A
        - export all contacts by FILE > EXPORT ... > EXPORT vCard ... and save the file on your Mac (don't worry about duplication - we merge the contacts later)
    2. Now switch of iCloud sync for Contacts on all devices
        - Mac: Open System Preferences > iCloud > untag Contacts and delete data on your Mac
        - iOS 5 devices: System Preferences (Settings) > iCloud > Contacts OFF and delete data on your iOS 5 device
        - Rem: you have to do this on all devices you sync with your iCloud account
    3. Open your account on www.icloud.com and delete all contacts
    NOW all should be clean!
    4. Do a full restore of the AddressBook data from your Time Capsule backup. In order to to this you need to open the Library folder of your account on the Mac. Since the advent of Mac OS X Lion this folder is hidden. However you can easily open it by CMD-Shift-G and type in "~/Library/". Then go to the folder "Application Support" and leave the "AddressBook" folder selected (blue background).
    5. Open Time Capsule and go back to the date when the AddressBook still contained all groups. Then restore the entire folder "AddressBook". Time Capsule will ask you if the existing folder should be "Replace"d. Confirm "Replace" and your AddressBook is (Tip: If you do not know the date, Leave AddressBook' group view active and open TimeCapsule and while moving back in time you'll see the groups re-appear at the appropriate date).
    6. Now import the earlier vCard backup into Address Book (in case you've added, changed contacts)
NOW your Mac AddressBook should be up to date, including Groups.
    7. Connect one of your iOS5 devices via USB cable to your Mac and open iTunes.  Click on the name of your device under DEVICES.
    8. Click on "Info" on the top row menu in iTunes. Tag the option "Sync Address Book Contacts" and press the button "Sync".
    9. After the Sync eject the iOS 5 device from your Mac
Now your iOS 5 device is updated with all contacts and groups. (check if you want)
    10. on your iOS 5 device open SETTINGS > MAIL, CONTACTS, CALENDAR and choose "iCloud". Switch Contacts ON.
    11. Check your iCloud account on www.icloud.com if all contacts and groups are properly restored.
Now your iCloud is updated and we can execute the final step.
    12. On your Mac: Open System Preferences > iCloud and switch Contacts ON and/or tag Contacts.
    13. In your Mac AddressBook> Check (this may take some minutes) if all contacts and groups are properly sync'ed.
    DONE!

A: No. If you want access to iDisk.
I assumed everything switched over to iCloud. So what happens to iDisk when MobileMe is finally no more in June?
When Mobile Me ends on 6/30/2012 iDisk will cease to exist.

  • Newer iPhoto library lost in migration

I migrated my iPhoto library from my old macbook onto my new macbook where I had already uploaded new photo albums. After the migration, my iPhoto library needed to be rebuilt. Now my new photos from the last month are missing. Are they lost?

I migrated my iPhoto library from my old macbook onto my new macbook where I had already uploaded new photo albums.
So you now have two libraries on the machine, right?
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'

  • HT204350 Connection lost while migrating in Mavericks

Hi! Had problem with migration. As soon as the target computer start to search for data on the source computer they loose connection. I'm updating from via ethernet cable directly between the two computers. Sounds familiar? Any idea what's going on?

I had the exact same issue yesterday. I upgraded to a new MBP with Retina, coming from a 2007 MBP. I had to upgrade to Mavericks on the old one and then started Migration assitant over wifi because neither MBP have the same connections, so I'm forced to use wifi. 16hrs was the estimate I received, and with 4hrs remaining it lost connection. The new MBP showed that roughly 100GB of info was taken up by my music and movies, but I could not find any of it using Spotlight nor iTunes. So I reinstalled Mavericks and I got my space back, but I don't want to waste another 16hrs+ with this.....

  • Ethernet connection lost during migration

The ethernet connection gets lost while attempting an initial migration from an iMac 10.6.2 to a MacBook 10.6.1.
Supposedly, there are some advantages to doing a migration during the first set-up process.
Following the prompts on the new MacBook to connect an ethernet cable to the older Mac, then open Migration Assistant.
Shortly after entering the Administrator password and the code number from the new MacBook the connection is lost.
Maybe there never was a connection, how would I know?
Tried two different cables, could they both be defective?
Anyone have experienced this problem and know the solution?

    R C-R
Thought that you would be interested to know that your thoughtful and appreciated suggestions made no difference in eliminating the connection failure messages.
The MacBook is new. No one has ventured past the Welcome process. One of the first options after selecting language, country, & keyboard is the option of migrating information from another source. I chose to migrate From Another Mac.
The window instructions state to connect the two computers with an Ethernet cable, which I did.
Open the Migration Assistant in the iMac. Followed the instructions in the windows.
The iMac recognized the MacBook and a passcode appeared in the MacBook window.
The passcode was entered in the iMac, and the gathering of information begins in each computer.
Then the drop down window with "The Network Connection Failed" appears first in the MacBook then the iMac.
    End of migration process.
Anyone have this problem or a solution?
The manual accompanying the MacBook says:
    "*Gigabit Ethernet port
Connect to a high-speed Ethernet network, a DSL or Cable modem, or another computer. The Ethernet port automatically detects Ethernet devices and doesn't require an Ethernet crossover cable."
I definitely had these two computers directly connected with a working CAT6 Ethernet cable.
    What am I doing wrong?

  • IPhoto 11 lost after Migration Assistant run

I just bought a MBP 13' which came pre-bundled with iPhoto 11. I wanted to import my existing user data & apps from my previous mac using Migration Assistant. Unfortunately, this appears to have replaced iPhoto 11 with iPhoto 08 from my previous mac.
My MBP didn't come with any install DVD. How can I get iPhoto '11 back?

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • UT data lost in migration - can someone please confirm this?

We have just moved our LMS3.2 database onto a new server which is currently running LMS4.01 - I used the CLI backup and restore scripts to move the database (full, not selective). It appears that the UT history has disappeared. I am loathe to lose 18 months of data. so:
    1. Can someone confirm that the UT data should/should not have migrated.
    2. Is there a way of recovering this data and importing it into the new database?
The 3.2 server is still running, although not collecting data.

You should have the data if you performed a full backup/restore.
    1) Check the condition of the backup in the dbbackup.log file on the LMS 3.2 ...\CSCOpx\log directory and confirm is completed successfully.
    2) Check the restorebackup.log on the LMS 4.01 , maybe there was an issue.
    3) May need to reinstall follwoing these extra instructions:
Make sure you meet these requirements:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_lan_management_solution/4.0/install/guide/prereq.html
If the requirements are met, do the following to prep for the install:
LMS 4.0x must be installed on a clean system with no other applications including previous versions of LMS software.
    1) Make sure you use remote desktop to perform installation and not console.
    2) Be a local administrator not domain administrator, ie create the
account locally and add to group administrators and remove group users
    3) Log in as the local admin and then go to My Computer -> Properties ,
Advanced Tab, Environment Variables. Make sure the USER section TEMP and
TMP variables are edited to something like C:\windows\temp or C:\temp
    (make sure temp exists)
    4) Go to My Computer -> Properties, Advanced Tab, Performance Options ->
Advanced Tab. Make sure the page file space is set to the application
requirements (8 or 16 GB) and is Fixed (not managed by system).
    5) After the uninstall of previous LMS , make sure the installation directory
    is also removed \progra~1\CSCOpx
    6) It is a good idea to reboot between uninstall/install
    7) Stop all firewall / antivirus before install
    8) EXTRACT the files, do not install while in zip format.
If you are using Windows 2008 R2 it will require a patch, windows 2008
R1 SP2 does not require this patch.
    http://www.cisco.com/cisco/software/release.html?mdfid=283434800&flowid=19062&os=Windows&softwareid=280775103&release=4.0&rellifecycle=&relind=AVAILABLE&reltype=latest
    Reboot after installation.
Use the same admin account to now perform the restore (assuming the backup is valid).
If this does not help, you may want to open a case.

  • Mailman addresses lost after migration!

The lists are there, because I can still get at them via the web interface, but attempting to email to any of the several dozen lists I hosts bounces with the list name as an unknown user.
How to I hook those wires back together? I looked through /etc/postfix/main.cf and /var/mailman/data, and can see nothing obviously wrong.
If it makes any difference, I migrated from a quad G5 Leopard Server (case sensitive) to a Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server. THAT was a joke, with MySQL totally borked due to the migration not detecting the case insensitivity of the target volume, and I had to reformat the second Mac Mini volume to case sensitive and re-install Snow Leopard Server. Sheesh!

To answer my own question, I had to modify /usr/share/mailman/Mailman/mm_cfg.py, which Apple failed to preserve. I needed to define:
    POSTFIXSTYLE_VIRTUALDOMAINS = [ 'www.champagnebeadwork.com', 'www.craftedbycarol.com', 'www.ecoreality.org', 'www.ecovillagenews.org', 'www.goatonarock.com', 'www.creenchipper.ca', 'www.plantofarm.org', 'www.veggievangogh.com' ]
    for each virtual domain.
Apple support was no help whatsoever, even though Snow Leopard Server came with this "Support ID" along with the serial numbers. They offered me an "incident" for $695 -- 70% of the cost of the server!

  • Foreign keys on cascade delete rules are not migrated

hello folks, i tried to migrate a database from sql server 2005 to oracle 10g express using SQL Developer 1.5.5 and noticed that the cascade delete option of the foreign keys was ignored by the tool.
I'd like to know if it's a limitation of the tool or a bug. I have over 500 fks with such configuration and it would be simply impossible to manually configure every migrated fk in oracle.
    thanks all.

  • Where are the images stored after migration

I'm totally lost after migrating my pictures from iPhotos.app to Photos.app...
From an article from Apple, (see below) there is no duplication of the library even if it looks like (when you look at the GB). So i understand that there is a kind of link or alias for each picture. But i would like to know where the original ones are (imposible to know looking at the finder because both libraries show strangely a lot of GB.
So I tried different options to understand. If I delete an event in the iPhoto library and definitely trash it, these pictures are still in Photos. And if I delete some pictures in Photos.app definitely (deleting definitely from File Menu > Show Recently Deleted) these pictures are still in iPhoto !!! So where are the real pictures ??? In which library? Somewhere else? Why the two libraries are showing all these Gb and it does'n't correspond to the capacity storage of my hard disk...
I really don't understand how it works... Any help would be very appreciated.
    Article from Apple :
Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries
Learn how Photos stores images when you migrate your iPhoto or Aperture library and saves disk space by sharing images.
When you migrate a photo library from iPhoto or Aperture, the Photos app creates a new library structure but doesn't duplicate your images. Instead, Photos saves disk space by creating links to the original and preview versions of your images. When Finder reports the file size of your Photos library, it includes all your originals and previews. It may look like your remaining iPhoto or Aperture library is taking up twice the space on your hard drive, but it isn't—your images exist only in one location, even though you may have more than one photo library. After you migrate your iPhoto or Aperture library to Photos, you might feel tempted to delete your original iPhoto or Aperture library. Because the migrated library takes little additional space, you don't need to delete the original library.

They're in both libraries; a hard link to a file is indistinguishable from the original file, and either one can be deleted without affecting the other.

  • How to import only "missing" E-Mails from backup?

    Hello everyone!
I have a problem with mail. I set up a new MacMini (w/ Mavericks, i7, 2014) from a backup of an older MacMini (also Mavericks, i5, 2012). I used the migration client and it all looked just fine, when I first started working on the new system. First thing, which was odd: I had my project folder with LOTS of content lying on the desktop (some 14 GB, a few thousand files in multiple subfolders). I noticed, of those 14 GB 12 GB went missing. No problem - I just copied the files from my old system (which I still have and which still works).
However, after I've been working with the new system for a couple of weeks, I noticed the same thing that happened to my project folder apparently happened to my (local) E-Mail folders. Again, the folder structure is still there, but tons of (mostly older) e-mails are missing. Since I've been working with the new system for quite some time now, the above-mentioned "delete and replace" approach is out of question, because all new e-mails, which I filed in the local folders would be lost.
As I still have my old system as a backup, it is no problem for me to retrieve all old e-mails manually. But is there a way how I can import only those mails, I have lost during migration? Or in other words: How can I sync the new and the old mail folders while avoiding duplicates and keeping the folder structure as is?
Every comment is highly appreciated! Thanks in advance..!

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
              Envelope Index
              ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. ClickOK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • User and Computer memberships are missing after moving computer and user objects using ADMT

    Hi to everybody.
Source domain Windows 2003. Destination domain Windows 2008. I use ADMT 3.2
    I have noticed 2 issues:
    1. After migrating users, membership to all Bultin domain groups, is lost. Migration of custom groups is completed without any problems prior to start migrating users.
    a. Example 1: user in source domain belongs to Domain Admins, Domain Users and a custom Domain group with the name Test. After moving the user, the membership is as follow: Domain Users and Test! And the worst of all
is that I believe that Domain users membership was not produced by the migration but from the AD mechanism that automatically gives every new user the Domain Users membership. Look at example 2.
    b. Example 2:user in source domain belongs only to the Domain group with the name Test. After moving the user, the membership is as follow: Domain Users and Test!
    2. After migrating a computer account from source domain to destination domain I have noticed in the "Local Users and Groups" that the Domain Admins  membership in the Administrators group is missing.
Any ideas? I think I am missing something fundamental here.
    Thank you all in advance.

additionally, from the migration log I see the following
WRN1:7372 ADMT does not process BUILTIN accounts or change the membership of BUILTIN groups (Administrators,
    etc.).
there is 1 line of the above WRN for each builtin group that the user belongs in the source domain. This
means that there I have to do this membership update manually? And what if I have 1500 users and 300 groups?

  • Clean install - what to do with a messy /user/library

    Hello Community!
I'm planning to upgrade from Lion to Mavericks with a clean install. But I'm worried that the speed-advantages of an clean install will get lost by migrating my current user account/home folder. I migrated my main-user-account from  new Mac OS to new Mac OS for many years now and used/tried a lot of applications. I Think that my main-user-home-library is a mess now - e.g. when I create a new user  with my current Lion - System - this new user is already much faster than my good old main user.
So my question is: should I clean up my current main-user home-library before upgrading? There is the "risk" of deleting to much or not enough.
Or is it better to create a new user and just copy from the old user-library what I need (mail, firefox profile, addressbook....) Do I get with this procedure permission problems?
Any suggestions or opinion is very welcome
    Dietmar

I think you would be better off  doing a clean install, making a new user account, and then carefully moving selected items, not just moving your user account or Library folder over, "cleaned up" or not. It might take a little longer that way, but it's worth it. A clean install avoids a lot of problems.
I made a list of stuff to move over. Many items (at least the ones I use) are stored in iCloud anyway; they sync directly from the iCloud server, which takes care of Contacts, iCloud keychain, and Safari bookmarks.  For mail I just recreate the accounts I have by entering their passwords in Mail.app. Ditto for network settings. I "manually" transferred my iTunes music, ibooks books, my photo library, and my documents from Time Machine. Then reinstalled my apps from clean installers. Trying to "tidy up" my Library or User folder would just be a mess. I don't do clean installs that often, so it's worth the effort.

  • I was migrating from a 3gs to the 4s. Big mistake. Have lost contacts and access to music and apps.

I was migrating from a 3gs to the 4s. Having never upgraded the IOS before, I thought that I should do that before handed the phone down to my daughter to replace her broken 3g. Big mistake. Even using Google sync for my contacts, following instruction from the Google webpage (ambiguous: cancel or not when error message is displayed?) the contacts did not sync to gmail. iTunes says it will sync contacts, but doesn't from the phone, only from the few that were in my old Gmail account. The iCloud set up asks for email and a new password- not specifying that you should use your old email and password for your old iTunes account or your phone will be instantly locked out of those apps and tunes stored there. The web info says you can't merge accounts or passwords, so, I bet I have to cancel the new set up and start over with the old password if it will even let me. I've spent 8 hrs reading, syncing, et c., on this! It will be a long time before I casually buy a new phone from them! I wonder how much time it will take to switch from the 3GS to the 4S? I now have a 3GS without contacts, no way to get the data from those files back, and can't get the apps to it or the 4S until Apple support helps fix the double identity problem.
Considering that I had verbal instructions from the Apple store prior to the IOS upgrade, reviewed all the details on line, I think this process is woefully lacking in clarity and transparency. The local ATT branch offered nothing except backing up to avoid loss of contacts if both phones were taken to the store, but not any help with the IOS or iTunes content. Cable internet for the 3GS backup and IOS 5 upgrade seemed to take about 2 hours. At least calender, notes, etc. were done correctly and 2500 picture and videos were not removed.

After the last post,I went to the local ATT for some feedback. The manager there, Stephen, was helpful and spent a long time, even after i had gotten the abbreviated list of contacts I had constructed from the 3GS to the 4S by an iTunes sync with the correct options selected. This however, would not sync notes. I took screen pix of my many stock symbols for future reference, and got them to transfer with Bump (as photos, in case I want to refresh my memory on some of the symbols added previously). I emailed myself copies of 28 notes i did not want to lose, because the iCloud back up would not initially work. After what seemed like years, I finally was able to get it working, following repeated refusal to Merge because of "not enough space available" @5GB even though everything was turned off except contacts and calendar.
My old phone is finally backed up to the cloud after I turned off location service on new phone, and a bunch of apps and photo data showed up for the first time, as icons to be turned off on the old phone in the  Manage Storage window. It said it was going to back up 8 GB of photos when the photo backup had been turned off on the prior screen. (The screws are loose, and the worm has turned on this software at Apple.)
Backup for notes, a few contacts, and calendar, over high speed wifi, took 25 minutes to complete without photos.
I have never seen anything this troublesome in the Apple OS!
You will need to set your own Apple ID and a .me email ID if you want to use the cloud. My recommendation and that of the store manager for the first time is don't back up any photos, let it erase the photo stream if it wants to. The camera roll should be ok.
Backing up to the iCloud removed all my stocks from the old phone! It wasn't supposed to. Be sure to select leave data on phone at every opportunity- even so, there they went. It did not remove contacts or calendar when backing up, though the IOS 5 upgrade had lost my years of contacts since I had not specified that they should be saved when I hit the simple sync in iTunes the first time and since Googlesync failed to connect properly for me over wifi as noted above.
All in all it appears nothing is going to clone your phone or preserve all the data through a IOS 4.x to 5 migration, though I did not do it right the first time with iTunes, and complicated matters by starting with a new ID instead of my old iTunes account and password, living in a small town, away from any Apple store, though if you can't be there at an Apple store with both phones in hand, they probably can't help much unless they walk you through each option in iTunes and you are very attentive. The store genius I saw did not do this, though I had yet to order the phone at that point.
    Good Luck!

Since then we cannot find the Xserve via ping or even with a PowerBook in the same subnet.
How can we restore TCP/IP information, subnet info etc.
Right now we CANNOT ACCESS PER SSH but ONLY VIA FIREWIRE ACCESS, therefore we cannot use changeip and serversetup.
How can we set DHCP information without ssh access only access to the files?
    What to set?`
    Where to set?
    Any information is greatly appreciated.
    karsten

The main ethernet port had been disabled by the installer!
We connected a powerbook (just plain ethernet cable) to the other port which was running with some old ip number and send
    ping 224.0.0.1
This gives you the ip number
then we logged in via ssh
    then
    networksetup -setnetworkserviceenabled "Ethernet…" on
Now we can work through the messed up install…
