Lost in Time Machine

Document completely lost in Time Machine.
Any other way to recover? Trash does not have document

A few more details would be helpful. When was the document created and deleted in relation to when your backups happen in Time Machine? Did you move the document so it might be in a different location in Time Machine?
There are programs and services that can recover lost files, but the more you use the machine after having deleted a file, the less likely you are to be able to recover it. I've never used them, but products like FileSalvage from SubRosa and DataRescue from Prosoft Engineering might be able to get the file back.

  • I lost my time machine's password ! how can i get it back ?

    Hello
So i bought a hard disk and i thought it might be better add a password. Now guess what i lost it. so how can i get my password back ? thank you
PS: I can understand french or english

If you mean that you encrypted your Time Machine backup, there's no way to recover the password. You must not have saved it to your keychain, or you wouldn't need to ask the question. Erase the drive and start over.

  • Aperture 3.4.3: Referenced images lost in time machine restore but previews remain

    Dear Aperture Community,
I recently purchased a new iMac and used a time machine backup of my old iMac to move my files over to the new Mac. All seemed to work well, and I have been using my new iMac happily for a couple of weeks.
I have Aperture 3.4.3 with about 40,000 photos in my database.
However, I just noticed that a small handful of semi-recent photos (~100) have a badge showing that "The referenced image’s master has not been found" (the yellow triangle arrow badge). I tried "Locate Reference Files" for all photos to redirect to the new hard drive name, but that failed to locate the ~100 missing images. I tried to inspect the Aperture library by Control-clicking on the Aperture library and choosing Show Package Contents - indeed the ~100 images were not there, but the ~40k other images were.
I can imagine that this issue may or may not be due to Time Machine, but I certainly never deleted any images. I always import my photos directly into Aperture.
How can my thumbnails and high resolution previews of the 100 images still be visible in Aperture, and yet the masters be lost?
I'd like to recover the images. Worst case, I will use Grab to capture the previews, which are of course much lower resolution than the originals, but at least I'll have something...
    Thanks for your help!

    thanks for the reply Frank:
Masters.  I do not know.  I left it as the default.  I assume that means managed?
Error message was the LONG error code with the jist of it being related to what sounds like a PLUGIN error. I don't have the EXACT coding right now as I am not home.  I've googled the code +/- other stuff on it and according to discussions here and elsewhere (albeit all archived), it looks like it was related to my plugins.
as far as the restore is concerned, I am POSITIVE that the restored library was the NEW library not the original.  But keep in mind, Time Machine only lets me restore the backup to the exact place where the file was before.  I am just worried that somehow Time Machine backup hosed my Aperture library somewhere along the way.  This is why I was wondering if there is something else I need to restore with my time machine backup besides the library file/database itself?
    Thanks for the quick reply.

  • ICal lost appointment / Time Machine retrieval

I have a recurring appt that occurs on January 1 every year.  Yesterday I discovered that the occurrences prior to 2014 have disappeared.  This is distressing as I have pertient info saved on those entries.  All other appointments in all calendars seem to be present going years back, so it is only this one (or a select few) that have disappeared.
I have tried to retrieve by restoring by Calendar folder in Library from my oldest Time Machine backup, which was last September 2013.  But this is not working.  I go through the process, but none of the data loads...  I only get three default calendars, Birthdays, Home, and Work (i think) but no data present.
What am I doing wrong in restoring this from Time Machine?
    (to confirm, here are steps:
    1.  I am turning off wifi and my iphone
    2.  Enter time machine
    3.  Restore Calendar folder
    4.  Exiting TM and REPLACE calendar folder with old one
    5.  Also tried restoring the iCal files in Preferences, but this didn't help either.)
    Thanks.

Thomas - You are awesome - THANK YOU!
I did exactly what you said (CAN"T believe an Apple Genius did not know this) and I think all of my events got restored.
However, it duplicated all of the calendars - I have 6 (one for each family member plus an extra called home that we all have to do).   Not sure if I did something wrong, but do you have any ideas?
Also, the time setting must be wrong b/c I have events from 2008 showing up in 2012 - same day and time as the old sessoin - just out dated.    Do I need to manually change all of this?   Should I delete the Calendars folder again and try again?
Also, I read some where about deleting a iCal cache file.   Do I need to do this?
I TRULY appreciate you taking the time to help people in this forum.   I have spent hours the past two days trying to figure this out.   Plus, now I need to figure out about upgrading my Office for Mac b/c I didn't realize I lost Office 2004 when upgrading to Lion.
Thank you for your time and support!

  • Is there a way of retrieving draft emails i've lost though time machine back up?

    Hi,
I am currently running Time Machine back up, which works fine. However for stupid reason the other day i managed to delete all my draft emails, which i kind of use as a note pad for things that i am working on.
Is there a way of getting all these mail items back.
I have looked for where this "mail folder" should be kept in the time capsual but it doesn't exist or i cant get draft mails.
Any help -  as i have lost some really important things - like a full notation on the amazing milestones in my baby daughters life.
    Ade

strangely i have gone and unanswered my own question, it was simple and brilliant too.
All you do is open drafts in your current state, and then open time machine, take yourself back to the time required, and all the draft items are there.
Then press restore. Just amazing how Time capsual works.
    Excellent

  • Lost login keychain; Lost previous time machine backups with Lion install

I downloaded Lion and it would not install on my 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 gb 1067 mhz ddr3 Mid-2009 Macbook Pro.  I got the exclamation mark with hard disk irrepairable error.  I took it to the local Apple store.  They did a number of hardware tests and after several false calls saying it was ready (when I arrived to pick it up and tried to set up OS (select language etc) I got spinning beachball), I finally brought it home with Lion installed.  All seems well, and I restored the data from Time Machine backup done under Snow Leopard.  To my surprise, I find old versions of the login keychain - last updated 2010.  I had 2 separate time machine backups going back six months, but when I tried to browse one for the newer keychains, I find that all previous Time Machine backups have been removed and all I have is the Time Machine backup from Lion install.  So there are two related problems: one is that I lost keychain data and the other is that I can't restore from Time Machine backup since the only backups that seem to be there have restarted with Lion. Another factor, is that the technicians had to reset my user password in order to set up Lion and I subsequently changed it back to my own password. Any solutions to locating old time machine backups or restoring recent keychain entries?

    How so I know...
Time machine preferences shows last known backup as NONE
NOTE:  I found a section in the time machine prefs to use another backup file and all seems ok now
    Thx

  • Lost my time machine backups

Updated my macbook to snow leopard (yes, behind the times) and now my external hard drive's time machine partition is grayed out. I have data on my old backups that I need. The genius bar suggested data recovery software, after we tried disk utility's repair function. What software will likely work to recover my time machine? The other partition in my external hard drive still works, but I removed that data to make sure it's safe.
    Thanks.

Take a look at the Console app - select all messages and then put "backupd" (without quotes) in the search field - you might have to go back to compressed log files as it depends how long ago something changed. when you put something in the search field, only those messages that contain that string will show in the main window - hopefully this will give you all the things that involved backupd which is the process that runs when backups are done and a clue as to when and what happened
    Console.app is located in /Applications/Utilites

  • Finding iCal data (for unclear reasons lost) in Time Machine

When I opened iCal today all the information in my calendars was gone (except for birthdays from the addresse book). I have time machine backups but can't understand where to find this information. Could anyone advise?
(I do not understand why the data went missing in the first place)

To restore I installed Mavericks on the new, blank drive using the install app from the app store and then during that installation I chose Time Machine when it got up to the data migration part.
My time machine backups are on an external Seagate drive which I have never had problems with.
Nothing is excluded that shouldnt be, only music and photos because I back them up elsewhere.

  • I have "lost" the time machine disk on my time capsule. How can I get it back?

I went to restore a Word document from January 2010. When I went into Time Machine to restore it, I found that the current backups only go back to May 2013. I've had the Time Capsule at least a couple of years longer than that. I tried going into Time Machine to select disk, and ended up deleting the existing disk and being offered a new one.
However, I know that the old backups (from May 2013 onwards, anyway) are still there. How can I reconnect to them via Time Machine?

It was the alt key that did it
Interesting, since it is the control key that works on my Mac....not option or alt.
Unfortunately, if you cannot select the disk in Time Machine Preferences as a Time Machine backup destination, you will have to go with what you have.
If it were me, I would probably erase the Time Capsule disk and simply start over again with a new backup set.

  • Photos lost in time machine?

Recently I had some problems with a variety of software programs and it became apparent that i needed to reformat my hard drive. Even though I had everything backed up to time machine I chose to back up everything separetely and redownload everything manually including files and software for fear that reinstalling everything with time machine might reinstall the problems I was trying to correct. So far, so good, Except I just realized that all my pics that were accessed through Iphoto exist only in the time machine backup. When I start up the computer it asks if I want to make that same external hard drive my default time machine backup and I always say no, not yet. I wanted to make sure everything is working just right first. ANYWAY, what I want to do is reinstall ONLY the pics in the picture folder and NOTHING ELSE. If I make that same external hard drive my time machine hard drive will it want to overwrite everything? I just want to go into it and get the pics. Is this do-able?

TM questions are best ask in the TM forum
From an iPhoto standpoint you simply launch TM and go back to the time you want, select the iPhoto library and click restore

Thanks for posting.  I have my library on an external drive and it spins processing before it crashes.  I have tried everything.  I think it believes some images are corrupted but who knows.
Do you keep your photos on your internal or external hard drive?  Did you just open aperture and choose new library or did you delete your old one?  I am not sure what to do, I have a big aperture library on a hard drive and time machine back up somewhere.  I have a mirrored hard drive so I may only have 2 copies of the same screwed up library, don't know if they back up on time machine also?
Time machine has always confused me to be honest and fortunately I have never had to use it.  So you can just replace your pictures?  I think I have a bunch of photos in iphoto library on my internal hard drive, I hope I don't end up with duplicates and triplicates.  Although I would settle for just about anything right now.  I have 15k pictures that I see briefly before it crashes.

  • I have lost a Time Machine folder once i've upgraded to Lion

I recently used time machine which loaded a folder on my.  I them upgraded to Lonand the folder has gone, even though it is still occupying harddrive space.  Can anyuone help me find the folder that seems to have gone somewhere?????

Sorry, but your post is not very clear.
Do you mean a folder that was on your Mac has disappeared?   Or the backup of a folder has disappeared?
Or that you cannot see some backups at all?
What is the name of this folder, where was it, and what kind of data is in it?
And, how did you upgrade?  Did you just install Lion over Snow Leoaprd, or did you erase first?  If so, how did you put your data back?

  • Lost Images-Time Machine-Backup??

Thinking I was Backed Up, I erased the Picture Folder.  Sadly, this erased iPhoto and 2500 images. I have restored 700.  I think the other images are in iPhoto Library#1.  When I try and restore this folder I get a message saying ``...you don´t have permission to access...`` I bet my images are in this folder that for some weird reason I cannot access.  Can anyone help figure out how to access this iPhoto Library#1???  Thanks,   Tim

    Terence, Thanks for you response.
I have tried the whole thing: the iPhoto Folder in Pictures.  No joy.  I only get the 700.  There are another 2000 images somewhere.  Since there are 8GBs in that iPhoto Library#1 and I am not allowed permission to open it, I was guessing the missing images might be in there.  I have tried all  the ways that I can see of getting to those 8gigs.
    Any ideas?  Thanks, Tim

  • HT201250 Any ideas on how to recover my Time Machine backup with a lost password?

I am trying to migrate my Time Machine backup to a new Macbook, but lost the Time machine administrator name and password.
My old Macbook still connects to Time machine, so the information (administrator and password) is in that computer somewhwere - I just can't find it.
Is there a way to find that information in my old machine or otherwise get into the Time Machine files?
I am using a Seagate external drive connected to a wireless router.

    I have a similar problem.
