Lost Installation DVD

Hello everybody.
As the title reads i have most probably lost my Tiger OSX installation DVD that came with my macbook i bought in july....i need it to install X11 and to be able to reinstall the system in case anything goes wrong...
Is there any way to obtain a new copy other than buying a new one?
I heard that the copies that come with intel procs machines are bound to the machine...is that true?
Thanks!

You can order a new one from AppleCare (1-800-275-2273.)
Yes, the installer discs that came with the computer are specific to that model. There will not be a universal OS X installer for both Intel and PPC Macs until the release of Leopard. Currently there is no "retail" version of Tiger for Intel Macs.

Please tell me how I can replace my Macbook Software Installation DVD #1 since I have lost it. I have DVD #2, but can not find #1. What is the cost to get another one. Can I do it online since I am disabled? It's much easier that way.
    Thanks,

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
You'll need to call AppleCare Support. They can provide you with a new set of disks. In the past, they've charged about $60 for a new set. You may also be able to go into an Apple retail store and order a set, but Apple does not provide support online or via e-mail. Apple uses a outside relay services for inbound and outbound TDD calls. Anyone calling Apple via a relay service should ask the relay operator to press zero to reach an operator.
As Alex mentioned, you won't be able to buy a retail copy of Mac OS X for Intel at any price (unless you want to buy the "universal" version of 10 client Mac OS X 10.4 Server for $499).

  • How to format HDD and reinstall OS on macbook pro mid 2010 without the installation DVD.

After updated the OS with MAVERICKS becomme my macbook very slow. So I want to format the HDD and reinstall the OS but without the installation DVD - (lost).
Could some one advise me how to proceed? Thank you

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X Lion and newer include OS X Recovery to reinstall Mac OS X without the need of a DVD. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
First of all, copy your most important files to an external drive, or make a backup of your files. Then, hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting, open Disk Utility and erase Macintosh HD by choosing it in the Disk Utility's sidebar and going to Erase tab.
Finally, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X

You are now chatting with Vijay Kanna .
Vijay Kanna : Hello! Welcome to Adobe Customer Service.
    Vijay Kanna : Hi Ilia.
Vijay Kanna : Please allow me a moment while I  review your request.
    Ilia: Hello! Ok, I'm waiting.
Vijay Kanna : I have read your request.
Vijay Kanna : I will be glad to help you with the information.
Vijay Kanna : I would first like to inform you that this application you have is a Volume Licensing Product for CS3 for which its not possible to make changes on the license activation seats.
Vijay Kanna : Usually the Volume Licensing Product will not provide such error as this type of error will only show up with retail (single) user application.
Vijay Kanna : If you use the correct download link from the licensing account for this particular application or the CDs for this particular application you will not get such errors.
Ilia: Ok. Where I can download distributive of CS3 (we lost our box with CD or DVD)?
Vijay Kanna : If the CDs are lost and you have not purchased the application as a download then its not possible to find the download link for this application now as the current shipping version with Adobe is CS6.
Vijay Kanna : Adobe at the moment only has the CDs and download link for CS6.
Ilia: It means that we couldn't install our CS3 on new PC? What can we do in this case?
Vijay Kanna : You will have to locate the original CDs or your next option is to purchase the current version which is CS6.
Vijay Kanna : Also the CS3 is not compatible on Windows 7 or any other latest OS.
Vijay Kanna : Is there anything else I can help you with?
Ilia: Yes? wait a momemt please/ I consult with my boss/
    Vijay Kanna : Okay.
Vijay Kanna : Are we still connected?
    Ilia: Yes
    Vijay Kanna : Okay.
Vijay Kanna : Do you have any further questions for me today?
    Ilia: Yes, wait a moment.
Vijay Kanna : Sure. I will stay online.
Ilia: My colleague claims that a distribution kit with which we install the program on new PC is copied from lost CD.
Vijay Kanna : Ilia, the application is not installed this way. Also this error which you say "exceeded allowable activation" is not for a Volume Licensing Product and such error is only associated with the single user application.
Vijay Kanna : Hence, the installation file you have should be incorrect and for a single user application.
Ilia: Ok, thanks. We will try to find CD. Good-bye.
Vijay Kanna : You are welcome.
Vijay Kanna : Please click again to check with us, if we can be of further help.
Vijay Kanna : We will be glad to check and help you.
Vijay Kanna : Thank you for chatting.  Goodbye.

  • Is there any way to recover my AddressBookapp with out the installation DVD

my address book app is not working and i have lost my installation DVD is there any way to recover or install the app again?

The only things I can suggest are to use Disk Utility to repair your permissions and to drag the Address Book application out of the applications folder, do a system restart, and put it back again - I haven't seen this myself, but I saw it suggested for a similar problem. You should probably also delete ~/Lbrary/Preferences/com.apple.addressbook.plist and drag folder ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook to the desktop (though since it also didn't work in the other account this is unlikely to be the problem). I suppose you should also check your fonts, but since you aren't reporting problems with other apps this also is a long shot. You should have LucidaGrande, Helvetica, Times and Monaco.

  • Have server serial #, lost install DVD. Options?

Well, I seem to have lost my 10.6 Server installation DVD. I do have the serial number, though.  Is there a way to get another installation DVD? Any suggestions appreciated.

  • Problem reading Captivate 6 installation DVD on Vista

I just received my copy of Captivate 6 on a DVD for Windows. I would like to install Captivate 6 on a PC running Windows Vista 64 bit service pack 2.
My DVD drive cannot open the installation DVD to even start the installation. Is there a way I can install Captivate 6 on my system?
PS-I already paid for this copy of Captivate 6.

Well, this is a mystery. After asking the question, I downloaded and installed the trial version and then used the product code from the purchased version to obtain a serial number. This worked.
I also tried out the install DVD on another computer with Windows 7, and it started to autorun as expected.
I then came back to my Vista PC, inserted an old Acrobat installation DVD, which started to autorun as expected. I removed the Acrobat installation DVD and inserted the new Captivate 6 installation DVD, and magically it started to autorun this time.
It must have been my optical drive, but I don't know why it read the DVD this time and not the others.  (Never got any error messages. The computer just didn't read any data on the drive and was still looking for media to be inserted. Maybe something is a little misaligned??)
At any rate, problem solved and the software is installed and registered. Thanks for your response.

  • Can I make a DISK IMAGE of the installation DVD as BackUP?

Well after a week of continuing problems, I am so glad that I had several Fully Bootable Backups on external FW800 Hard Drives to keep me alive as my internal HD has been freezing and other repairs may be needed.
The ability to restart via the OPTICAL DRIVE with the original Installation DVD was also a BIG HELP. But, what if my optical drive would go? I am wondering if there is a way to make a copy of the installation drive (I'm thinking of a disk image file - believe Disk Utility can do that??) - But will it be recognized and serve to boot / install Snow Leopard on my Mac should I need it? (MBP-13" mid-2010 issue)
I don't want this for any reason other than emergency backup -- I had a DVD that was scratched and could not be read-- hey, maybe I should burn a copy as well?
Please let me know what is technically and legally possible here. I can't use a snow leopard DVD on this Mac - as it is too new. I need some backup(s).
    Thanks!
    Best regards,

Modifying, no. That use to be possible in the pre-Tiger past.
And with Mac Pro all you really need is to have a small 20GB partition and put OS X there for use when you want to run Disk Utility you would also be able to use other programs like CCC or Disk Warrior.
I honestly never have had to get out the original DVD (SL, Leopard, OEM) except maybe once. But I have cloned my system and even backed up my small 20GB "edrive." I also use CCC to backup system (80GB or less) to sparse disk images. But I also bought OS X DVD 10.5.6 as I wanted something with driver support for new hardware, the same thing happening now if you install the ATI 5770 and won't be able to boot with less than 10.6.4.
BootCD back in 10.3.x days though could be used not just to add other packages and use the current OS to create DVD, but to have a live DVD and be able to run Firefox and utilites.
Installing OS X off FW drive is fast, fast booting, and 5-10 minutes max to do the install.

  • I need to make a copy of my SL installation DVD

I have SL installed in both my iMAC and my MacBook Pro. However, just for security's sake, I'd like to make a copy of the Snow Leopard installation DVD that Apple had sent me. I tried to do so using Disk Utility under SL, but when it came to actually copy the created image on a blank DVD, the system advised me that I didn't have enough space on my DVD. Are there readily available higher capacity DVD on the market that would fulfill this purpose (Higher than the traditional 4.7 GB ones? I think there are, having made a google search, but is there a specially recommended brand? I don't want a cheap one, since we are talking about an important DVD that may save me lots of trouble in a possible future problem.

To do so requires a dual-layer DVD-R. I would use a good brand such as Verbatim. Do the following:
    Duplicate a CD or DVD
    1. Insert the DVD/CD;
    2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
    3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
    4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;
    5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
    6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.

  • At a complete loss. Worried data is gone for good. Trying to fix disk by booting Disk Utility from installation DVD but disk ejects. Help!

    Hello Comunity,
I'm at a complete loss and I hope you could help me.
The machine I have is I believe an early 2006 iMac model. (Model identifier 4,1 if I recall correctly).
Awhile ago I installed Snow Leopard on the machine but have since begun encountering serious problems (but I think it's due to the hardware and it's age rather than the software, Snow Leo was running smoothly) and now the computer won't start - I'm faced with a grey screen and a flashing folder with a question mark on it. I tried booting using the various key combinations and as I understood it, my last resort at fixing it myself would be using Disk Utility on the installation DVD.
    This is what happens:
I boot the computer, insert the disk, press down and hold C (also tried Option). I hear the computer trying to read the disk, but after a considerable aount of time holding down the key and a grey screen, the disk ejects and the flashing folder returns.
Could anyone offer an insight or advice?
At this point I'm not even that interested in fixing the machine, but there are some extremely valuable files that I need to recover (the machine gave out just days before I got my extrenal HDD to back them up).
I'm worried about taking the machine down to the Genius Bar - I'm a completely self-supporting student and I imagine the recovery cost would be huge (if anyone could provide any information on the potential cost of the repair and/or recovery that would help).

One thing to try without needing the install disk: reboot holding down cmd-S. It should reboot to a black screen and text prompt. Type the following, with spacing exactly as shown, hit the return key after each line:
    mount -uw /
    fsck -fy
    Then type
    reboot
    and see if that helps.
Do you have any other Macs in the household (or cna use a friend's) that you can try connecting to it with a Firewire cable? If so, reboot the iMac holding down T, you should see a large Firewire symbol moving across the screen. Connecting to another Mac with a FW cable will show you the iMac's hard drive mounted to the other Mac's desktop.
You can also try Diskwarrior, which fixes drive filestructure problems. It's around $100.
Professional data recovery cost would depend on a) whether the hard drive is actually at fault, b) if it's physically damaged or just has a filestructure problem. A physically damaged drive can go into the thousands of dollars for data recovery; a drive with filestructure issues usually costs a lot less to recover files.

  • Is it possible to update a 10.6.3 installation DVD to 10.6.8?

    Hello Everyone,
I work with a variety of clients and businesses that have need to reinstall their OS on a semi-regular basis. While I can use the original installation DVD, it's (much) faster to reinstall via a hard drive-based disc image of the appropriate version for their system (usually 10.6 or 10.5 these days, of course).
While I have used System Image Utility in the past to make custom images that install the base system, then install the appropriate Combo Update, this does not always work with newer systems as they often ship with a newer build of the OS than was bundled on the retail DVD I used to make my bootable hard drive. For example, the latest 10.6.3 Snow Leopard retail disc wouldn't boot recent MacBook Pros that shipped with 10.6.5 pre-installed on the hard drive.
So, what I'd like to do is to be able to upgrade the installation images itself to 10.5.8 and 10.6.8, respectively. Once I've done this, I would then be able to build custom images that would install the default build included on the CD, and then update with the Combo Updater, prior to that first reboot.
Even nicer would be if I were able to update the installation files themselves (such as Essentials.mpkg), so that I could forego having to apply the Combo Update each time—it would simply install the latest version from the get-go. Of course, that may require more work than would seem worth it.
In effect, I'm hoping to find a "slipstream" process for the Mac, similar to what PC users have enjoyed for many years now. Given the Mac's much-better imaging system, I should certainly think it possible. Any ideas out there? :-)
    Thanks much,
    MBJ

Ok, Perfect, yesterday night I did a maintenance for a 2007 mac book pro with much less core 2 duo processor than yours, 2gbs of ram, and the Mac went pretty well after installing the 10.7 from 10.6.8, so, Since you just told me the specs of your computer, I believe you are MORE THAN GOOD to install the LION 10.7 software. Just make sure if you download the dmg file from a torrent, probably what you will find is a 10.7 file.
After you install it, then run the Software Update Tab under the Top Left Corner in your computer and install the OS X 10.7.5 Update.
Just remember, dont even try to install the Mac OS X 10.8 Mounta Lion, as it uses a 64 bit kernel and your computer uses a 32, which will be very likely to experience a lot of system crashes due to your small amount of RAM memory.
I recommend you if you in the future would like to go for ML 10.8 OS X, you should change your RAM Memory first.
    Hope this info was helpful.
