Lost iPhoto and pictures

Tonight opened iPhoto and was prompted to select a library. I chose the library I thought was the correct one (I only have two choices iPhoto or Pictures) and now when iPhoto opens I have all the thumbnails but when I click to open them all I get is a black screen with an "!" mark.
I have tried all the usual procedures such as opening with "Option & Cmd" buttons held and rebuilt
all #1,2, & 6, or only "option" held to choose new library all to no avail.
Furthermore, when I went back to my Pictures folder all I have is a folder which went clicked on opens iPhoto. If I right-click on this folder then I can see all my other contents. I have tried to select-all in the this folder to drag onto the Pictures folder but all I get is a pop-up saying it can't be opened because "Pictures" may be damaged or incomplete
Using a cmd line from a previous problem I was able to get my "Pictures" folder back to what it should be (after several goes during which it kept reverting back).
Can anyone offer some advice on how I can open up my photos please?

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I lost all my photos in iphoto and picture project

I have a Mac OS X version 10.3.9, and the iphoto is version 4.0.3
i emptied my trash, and then went through the applications and deleted the ones i don't use (such as PDA and palm pilot applications and the games that i will never play). After i was done, i went back to iphoto and all the albums and pictures were gone. I went into picture project (a nikon software) and those pictures were gone, but had the little boxes of blank pictures. My desktop originally had a picture on it that i downloaded from a camera was gone as well. when i logged onto another account those pictures were still there. When i logged back onto my account, my desktop picture came back, leading me to believe that my pictures are still there. But those are gone too. Is there anyway i can retrive my pictures? I really hope they are not gone! I have too many pictures...and only half of them backed up! =(

i'm talking about the desktop trash. I don't know how to empty the iphoto trash.
No, i didn't delete anything with iphoto. i know i can delete duplicates, and still keep one of the pictures, i have done that before. I did delete Chess, Deimos Rising, Ambrosia Software Web, Kinoma, Palm, PDA Shop Lists, PDA Money, PDA Safe ID, Splash ID, Splash Money, Splash Shopper.
I logged under a different user name, and all those pictures were still in iphoto and picture project.
No, i did not contradict myself. The desk top picture did come back, leading me to believe that all the photos were still there. However, when i checked the iphoto and picture project, those were still gone.

Sync them back from whatever contact manager or cloud service you were syncing them with.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
This is normal. OS X doesn't come with iLife apps, so you have to reinstall them after reinstalling Mac OS X.
If your Mac came without DVDs or you purchased it after July 2011, you have to install the iLife applications from the Mac App Store. Open the Mac App Store, log in with your Apple ID, go to Purchases and download GarageBand, iMovie and iPhoto free of charge.
If your Mac came with DVDs and you didn't purchase the iLife apps in the Mac App Store, insert the Applications DVD and install the iLife apps. Then, open  > Software Update, and install the latest iLife applications version

  • How do I retrieve lost notes and pictures

How do I retrieve lost notes and pictures

Not sure about pictures, but for iphone notes:
After many hours of trying everything to retrieve my lost notes (several just disappeared overnight for no reason) it dawned on me that they were linked to one of my email accounts (In my case yahoo).
I logged into that account directly from the yahoo site (not iphone mail!) and "Voila!" all of my notes, even the disappeared ones, were there!
Took some cut & pasting and I'm back in business.
    Hope this helps.

  • After uploading mac os X lion, i lost iphoto and imovie. How get it back?

After uploading Mac OS X lion, i lost imovie and iphoto? How get it back?

If you purchased the apps from the Mac App Store, log into the Mac App Store, go to Purchases and redownload them. If you didn't and you have the CD/DVD of iLife you can reinstall the apps from there.
If you have a Time Machine backup or clone of your previous OS X install, you can use the Migration Assistant to copy over your apps.

  • Difference between iPhotos and "Pictures"

Can someone explain why some pictures show up in Pictures and iPhotos and which ones I should keep?

Photos only go into iPhoto if you import them. It could be that ImageCapture, the program that interfaces with your camera behind the scenes, is set to put the images it downloads into Pictures and not iPhoto.
Somewhere along the line you set that behaviour.
What are you using to take your pictures, and where do you want them to go?

  • I just installed iLife on my new Imac version 10.8.2 and now I can't open my iPhoto app.  It says that I Photo is damaged or incomplete.  What do I do to restore my iPhoto and pictures!

I just installed iLife on my new iMac 10.8.2 version and now I can't open my iPhoto app.  It says it is damaged or incomplete.  What can I do to get it back along with all of my picutures?  I was told by an Apple employee at my one to one training that it was OK to install iLife to get the iDVD that I wanted. Help!

I have installed iLife a few times and because of photostream, the version on the disc must be updated.  Software update usually takes care of it.  It sounds like you installed an old version over a new version.  I've not tried that.
You have a late 2012 machine, if you open the Mac app store from the dock, you should be able to go to the purchased tab and download/install the right version of iphoto.  Honestly, you should not have used that disc on this new of mac or at least only installed iDVD & iWeb but not garageband, iphoto, and iMovie.
If the Mac App Store shows iphoto as installed already, drag the app from your applications folder to the trash and reinstall it again from the Mac App Store.  That is the version you need.  You may find garageband and imovie have similar problems.
    good luck.
PS.  your photos are in your photo folder in your home folder.  don't touch those, I'm talking about the app "iphoto" in the applications folder.

  • Lost Albums and Pictures in Library

I recently had a problem with my computer and had to do a
I went to iPhoto where I had my 2,500 photos organized into separate albums and completely organized and all the photos were gone. I dragged the livrary file into iPhot and got back up to 2006?
*I have tried to Add to Library my 2007 photos and it says that the jpeg files that were already in iPhoto won't import with the error message Not the Right File Type.* I am completely confused. Can I fix this? Or do I have to rebuild it all.

My computer wouldn't boot so I had to reinstall the operating system. I guess I left that part out. When i opened iPhoto for the first time nothing was there. I dragged a back up of the iPhoto Library onto iPhoto and only got back part of my Library as well as set-up Albums.
Now when I go to drag the remaining photos that did not show up in iPhoto it says that the photos are not the right format. I hope that I won't lose them. I never touched them and they are jpegs.
Is there a way to reinstall iPhot and get back my Album list and all the photos?

  • Lost iphoto and imovie????

I went to look at some photos today and iphoto wouldn't come up it's on the desk top with a big ? mark over it. imovie is gone completely?? The only thing that I have done recently is sync an ipad all my photos seem to be on there and my phone ok. Could I reinstall my op system again and then sync all the photos back?? Any thoughts? Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Note: iPhoto and iMovie are not a part of the retail installation, unless you bought the Mac OS X Box set. You can recover them from the installer discs that came with your Mac, if the version is compatible with the currently installed system, or install from a compatible iLife retail set, or the Mac OS X Box Set that is compatible.
In the future always backup your data to avoid data loss*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Cloning when you have a functional system avoids the frustration of not knowing where something may be, as an exact copy of your system will be made.

  • Lost iPhoto and all my photos

    Before the arrival of my new iMac due to damaging my old one, I decided to delete some photos and tidy them up a bit so that the migration would be faster. In my launchpad suddenly two iPhoto icons appear and one said iPhoto (copy). Unfortunately I deleted this without checking it and emptied the trash can which then said 'deleting 3500 photos'. I had deleted a lot of photos so did not realise that I was deleting all my photos and let it continue. When I fired up the mac the next morning the iPhoto would not open and made me set up a new library which of course had nothing in it! Before you ask;
    1) I had not backed them up (I know feel free to shout at me!!). You will be pleased to know I have now bought an external HD BIG lesson learnt.
    2) I have tried to rebuild iPhoto following advice on the forums, this just rebuilt the new one.
    3) I have tried to find the old iPhoto file by following advice on apple support and you tube.
    4) I have recovered some photos from photo stream and luckily I had lots on Facebook that I have been able to pull through. I still have about 2000 missing
Everyone I speak to says don't worry it should be on your hard drive! But I am worried because I can't see anything anywhere that relates to my old file. Any help or advice would be GRATEFULLY received.

    CSOUND is correct.
Get a copy of Data Rescue 4 by PROSOFT.
I have used older versions in the past with some success.
However, if this is a hardware failure of the hard drive, no data recovery software would be able to recover much data.
I lost the magnetic heads to a laptop drive many years ago and nothing worked.
Of course the computer would not boot either.
Be sure to read the directions before loading any software including Data Rescue.
You want to avoid using that machine so data that you want is not overwritten.
    Good luck.
After doing this, be sure to get a pair of external hard drives.
    Use one for time machine.
Use the other for a SuperDuper bootable back up.
Finally, sign up for an internet back up service such as Crash Plan.
With three backup schemes, your data should be preserved for many years.
If one mechanically fails the other backup should work.
If your computer systems and hard drives are destroyed by a fire or stolen, the internet backup will save you.
