Lost iPhoto link once I downgraded to Mavericks

I hated Yosemite, so I downgraded back to Mavericks. In doing so I lost the link to my iPhoto library and can't seem to recover it. It shows greyed out library. When trying to select "which iPhoto library to use" the directory either shows greyed out or if it does show with open button, nothing happens at all once I choose to open. I have tried hitting command/option on opening, but it simply says choose iPhoto library and does not show option to rebuild as the Apple support suggested. Any help to rebuild this would much appreciated.
Thank you
Steve Miller

It didn't. It doesn't.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I've lost iPhoto after upgrading to Mavericks. I try downloading and it says I have an older version then doesn't give me an option to do anything?

I'm trying to download the new version of iPhoto when I upgraded to OSX Mavericks. It's telling me that I have an old version of iPhoto but yet not giving me an option to download new. Any ideas on what may be the problem?

What version of iPhoto do you have?
If you have any version of iPhoto '11 then version 9.5.x is a free update - if you own an earlier version of iPhoto ('09 or earlier) then you must pruchae iPhoto '11 version 9.5.x in the app store

  • I have lost iPhoto , was advised if I updated to the newest operating system Maverick that iPhoto would reload but it hasn't worked, any ideas how I can retrieve it without laying?

    any idea iron suggestions please?

This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks.  It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
Note 1:  every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.
Note 2:  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1.
If you don't have a backup of your hard drive from before you upgraded to Mavericks where you can restore the previous version of iPhoto (if it's compatible with Mavericks) you'll need to either use the disks that came with the Mac (if there were any) or an iLife 11 disk or purchse from the App Store.

  • The icons for links are gone. In their place are hyphentated boxes. After I click on the link once the real icon comes back. But litterally EVERY link icon is now a hyphenated box till I click once. How can I fix this?

The icons for links are gone. In their place are hyphenated boxes. After I click on an existing link once the real icon comes back. For Example: I have several bookmark links for Amazon. Those links now have hyphenated boxes as their icons not the Amazon icon. Once I click on an existing link the Amazon icon is activated and replaces the hyphenated boxes. Literally EVERY bookmark / link icon is now a hyphenated box till I click once. How can I fix this? I'm running Firefox 8.0 on windows XP. This problem started this week. Before and After upgrading to firefox 8.0 from 7.xxxx. See screen shot example.jpg i've attached below. Double click to enlarge it for better viewing. Any input welcomed. Not a major problem but I would like to have the icons back.
    Thanks

Thanks. That solved it. I had my doubts since I wasn't concerned about my lost bookmarks. I was concerned about the broken functionality. In any event, restoring from a backup solved both the functionality and the lost bookmarks. I appreciate the response!

Hi here are a couple of links you may find useful, the first is if you have made a time machine backup, the second if you have not.

  • Lost iPhoto Library and very slow iPhoto

I used to have my library on an external drive and had deleted the library in the pictures subfolder on my ibook. subsequently my external drive is hibernating. however, i appear to have copies on my laptop and am able to import new pictures. however, i can not locate a iPhoto Library or the file names on my photos on my laptop or anything resembling them and my iPhoto runs really slow and drags down the rest of my laptop.
Any idea where i can locate where my photos are stored on my laptop and why my iPhoto is performing so poorly?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

ok, one more thing to try. By the way, what do you mean by "the external is hybernating"?
The next instructions will help you find where a photo that you see in iPhoto is in the Finder. Once you find that out, tell me the path of the photo.
There is a way to find out where the original photo is that you have in your iPhoto Library. On this page there are iPhoto Applescripts. One of them is "show image file" I tried it and it does work for iPhoto 5. If you click on the image in your library window and then use the applescript it will open up a finder window with the image file, and you can see it's path of where it is.
    http://www.apple.com/applescript/iphoto/
Download the scripts from the link
Once downloaded, put the folder "iPhoto Scripts" in ~/Library/Scripts
    Now navigate to Applications/Applescript
In that Applescript folder is an icon that says "Install Script menu"
double click that icon to install the Script menu in your menu bar. You might have an item called ScriptMenu.menu instead. follow directions on next link
    http://www.appleclub.com.hk/applescript/script_menu/
It will look like a little black scrolled paper.
Or you might have an item named AppleScript Utility.app in the folder. Double click to open it and make sure you have show script menu in menu bar checked.
Now open iPhoto, click on a photo to highlight it
Go to the menu bar and click and hold on the Applescript icon
scroll down to iPhoto Scripts, then scroll to "show image file"
Wait for the Finder top open a finder window showing you where the image is.
    OR:
Or you can download Joe's iPhoto Applescripts
He gives instructions on the page for the installation of the scripts.

  • Lost iphoto, imovie & garageband after restore

I restored my macbook and lost iphoto, imovie & garageband. I have a late 2011 Macbook pro which came with no ilife disc so i can't use that

Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion
If you erase install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion on a new Mac that shipped with OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion installed, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
After installation, start (up) from OS X.
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.

  • Downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion

I am considering to downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion, and understand I would loose the maps app and some features... but is it worth it it so I dont have to continuously reboot my mac, so I can use a program every time ?
The problems I am having with mavericks, even when I have done a few tweaks , is that after running a few programs such as mail, safari, garageband  first and then loading photobooth... photobooth or any video app tends to lag , and the video is recorded lagging. A reboot fixes this if i start the program after reboot and not run any programs before.
Another issue is when I am doing my artwork, drawing in photoshop or manga studio... the pen tablet begins to lag as well, so I would have to save my work, reboot and then continue working until Mavericks starts misbehaving again.
This mac had its drive wipped clean before It became my personal mac, and I requested Mountain Lion, since I prefered it, but Mavericks was installed.
I dont mind Mavericks... its just this rebooting to fix or refresh system... is getting annoying when I need to get some artwork done.

  • Downgrading from Mavericks to Mountain Lion

So currently I'm not satisfied with having Mavericks OS X on my macbook, particularly because of the gradually decreasing disk space that happens each time I turn on my macbook. I've attempted to clear caches like the IconServices in order to make space, but more space is gradually depleted, especially when I use third-party software like VueScan, which I find essential to my lifestyle. I wish to downgrade from Mavericks back to the Mountain Lion OS I initially had when I received macbook. Before I do, I need to ask the following:
    1) Will I need to buy a new set of the OS software, or will I be able to perform a downgrade through the restart-and-recovery process I've seen posted?
    2) Should I backup my drive? If so, what would you recommend I use? (PS. I did not perform a backup before upgrading to Mavericks)

    TheArashi wrote:
can I clean install Mountain Lion instead if I choose to do this?
If you use Internet Recovery (Command + Option + R during restart; hold until you see a spinning globe and progress bar) - it'll take a while to connect to Apple's servers - up to 15 minutes. In any case, once you're there, you'll see a Utilities window. Choose Disk Utility and choose to erase your drive (or course, back up your stuff first!). When that is done, back to the Utilities window and choose to install Mac OS X. If yours came with mountain lion, that is what you should be getting as internet recovery/erasing the drive will result in reinstalling the original OS version. Be sure not to erase your hard drive until after you're booted into recovery and are at the Utilities window.

  • HT204266 I lost iphoto while doing an erase and reload,  I just had to buy it again?

    Hi
While doing a 'wipe and reload' as advised by a genius at Southampton Store,  I managed to lose a whole raft of stuff because my back up to time capsule decided it didnt want to let me restore.  I have recovered most of the stuff but seem to have lost iphoto.  It was very important to me so I went online and bought it again.   I believe that as I had it already, that I should have been able to reload it without paying. Is there any way I can obtain a refund please?
Next question:   all the same applies to iWeb as well and I am trying to find it online, but the Apple site seems to have everything related to iWeb but not the actual program.
I really do need to recover these two programs.   I have iphoto (big relief)  and just would like to get my pennies back, and I believe it is probably only my own lack of knowledge that is preventing me from finding iWeb to download.  Previous advice gratefully received told me not to download from any other sites, so that is a rule I am following.
Any advice most gratefully received please
    Many thanks
    Steve

You did not initially purchase it. Pre-order in iTunes means that they are reserving the content for you at that price. The link below is an article on how pre-orders work with iTunes. When you pre- order an album in iTunes it just means its reserving it at that price, since the price may change. When the album is available and released, iTunes will automatically download it should you have enough store credit on the account or a valid credit card on the account.

After upgrading to Yosemite I have lost iPhoto. It has a cross through it in Finder, but I clicked on it and I was directed to download the latest version from the App store, but it is not available in the Australian store. Can anyone please help? I am not an advanced user and I would like my photos back, having had no idea I would lose iPhoto in the upgrade!

Thanks petermac87...but for some reason, the only purchases showing are OS. So assuming iPhoto is in Mountain Lion, I was hoping to look under Hidden Items there as you suggested, but there is no option for that. Only option is to download Mountain Lion again, not iPhoto specifically. Any ideas welcome!

  • Time Machine "inherit" after emergency downgrade to Mavericks

    (iMac;  3.6GHz Intel Core i5; 16GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory)
I was having many kernel panics after upgrading to Yosemite. After thorough hardware diagnostics (no hardware problems), the Genius Bar guy suggested downgrading to Mavericks 10.9.5, which he did in the store by wiping the hard drive and installing 10.9.5.
From the latest time machine back up drive (WHICH HAD BEEN BACKING UP FROM YOSEMITE), I copied my apps and files across in small groups and so far so good re: kernel panics. This process was not done via time machine interface, simply by dragging off the drive from newest backup.
Now, I would like to resume using that same drive for time machine backups from 10.9.5. And I believe I want to "inherit" that existing drive, so my future Mavericks back ups are ADDED TO but do not REPLACE the current Yosemite back ups.
The scary thing, in setting up time machine preferences is that this drive is showing " oldest backup: none // Latest backup: none "  I'm afraid of going farther because I do not want this drive to be wiped during backup, for fear that kernel panics will return during that process and I could lose important data or ALL of it for that matter.
So, (1) Do I understand inherit correctly ? (2) How can I keep the current backups on this drive and ADD the future Mavericks backups?
    thanks!!!!
